Zen Sushi in Aliso Viejo is highly praised for its fresh, delicious sushi and excellent service. Customers consistently highlight the friendly and attentive staff. Speedy Chef John is mentioned for his quick preparation and the yellowtail belly sushi is a standout.
Tip: Customers rave about the freshness of the fish, especially the salmon and yellowtail. Consider trying the yellowtail belly sushi for a melt-in-your-mouth experience.
Speedy Chef John is magical. He made the rolls and sushi so fast. The salmon was fresh and had excellent texture. The burrito roll was great, but the straw of the nigh t was yellow tail belly sushi! It was buttery and melt in your mouth feel. The fresh wasabi pairing was enough to make me cry (tears of joy). Service was excellent as well. I never had an empty cup!
5 Stars means I love it so I had no other choice! My first dining in since the new updated COVID-19 guidelines and let me start by saying I was very impressed. The lady helping us was so helpful and polite. I always say great customer service is always a pre-cursor to the type of experience you will have at a restaurant. First off, the fountain drink cups were huge! I drink a lot when I eat so this was great and a bonus. They have the usual rolls like Dragon Rolls - but I went for 2 Sushi Burritos, a Mango Roll and yes the tasty dragon roll. The Sushi Burritos were delicious and were the best tasting I've ever had. The mango roll was new for me and it was delicious as well. My partner ordered a Baked Lobster Roll and it was the biggest ("best") lobster roll we have had anywhere. It was warm too! Again, the customer service was great. I can't reiterate this enough. I got refills without asking and the patio was shaded so it was great and felt safe. I highly recommend this place. We came from L.A but the drive wasn't bad at all. Look at the pictures I am adding. I bet your mouth will get watery!
My favorite sushi place around- fun, friendly excellent place. Pictured are the spicy octopus salad and the No-Kiss (garlic seared albacore) roll. Both great. Salmon crudo is the best thing I’ve eaten in a long time- includes truffle oil and sea salt, fantastic.
Now here is a place that can cook! The serving is perfect for two ppl. Highly recommend eating here. I truly enjoyed all I ate.
Another favorite date night place for my husband and I. Their dining area is finally open again, and they have an amazing patio area to eat on as well. The food was so delicious 😋. We ordered some white fish. This is a favorite of ours. The taste is amazing! We also ordered the Drunken Tiger Roll, Red Dragon Roll, and the Baked Salmon Roll. We wanted to try new items off the menu and we left full and happy again! All of the rolls are delicious. Thank you Zen for an amazing, much needed night out!
We've been coming to Zen Sushi for more than a year and it is easily the best sushi in area. The food is always fresh, the staff is friendly, and you get a lot of food for your money. John and Sam are friendly and have great recommendations, so make sure to sit at the bar. Flame Delite is easily my favorite. Our other regular recommendations are Sunset Roll, Sushi Burrito, and the Baked Lobster Roll. If you like eel, their Dragon Roll is the best I've ever had. It may be a small location, but it is easy to become a regular when the food and staff are this good!
Friendly staff, fresh fish, and quaint atmosphere. By far our favorite sushi place we have found close to Aliso Viejo.
If you are deciding on sushi restaurants, THIS is the one. I will be coming back for the excellent service who was very friendly and the BEST fresh sushi. We even got dessert on the house! Don't hesitate to come you will not be disappointed.
Very good, locals sushi joint with a mellow vibe and great selections!! Enjoyed a few rolls and some green tea with my son! #momsondate #sushi #orangecounty
I do primarily take out from here for lunch. Quick service, rolls are good size, fresh fish, and they have some of their own creation.
Awesome Large Oysters tasty, call to make sure they have enough or it they have in available. The sushi is also good.
Went twice in 2 days, once for dinner and next day for lunch, that says something about the place :). Always great sushi and service.
They had the best everything! It was beyond excellent. As pretty as that picture is, it cannot do justice to how enjoyableit was to eat. My taste buds were in heaven! I wanna go back!
My husband and I go to Sushi every Friday. this is by far our favorite place. We have since moved out of the area, but we talk about how much we miss it often. Everyone says hi to you when you come in. And they even started remembering our names and order :) Thank you guys!!
Great Miso soup, great spider rolls, great crunchy rolls. As you might be able to tell, I don't really enjoy actual sushi. This stuff was still fantastic. The service was great and attentive
Great Sushi, Happy Chefs, Pretty Hostess, The best service and 3 blocks from Home!! How Blessed are we! Oh yes and Zens pricing is palatable!
Their sushi is great I loved them all!!! Their lobster roll however was pretty mid. The service was great and fast. Atmosphere and music was great too.
A very roomy & friendly dining experience...we had a wheel chair bound diner with us & they never batted an eye just sat us without word or question....& the food was delicious 4.5 stars only because I'm a hard sell but I'd be hard press to name a better sushi place I've eaten at....
I've been to all sushi places in the area and this is our go to. Nice staff and good food. Lively atmosphere.
i went there 4 times, and every time my food was delicious. i ate lobster roll, crap and shrimp roller. laguna niguel roll ,caterpilar roll and rainbow roll, and i recommend it to you. unfortunately it is little bit more expensive than what you expect but same as other sushi restaurant.
Delicious Authentic food that is very fresh. Very prompt and friendly service. I highly recommend this place.
Love this place! Staff is friendly, the food is excellent and they are able to get our order for pickup done quickly every time.
Always delicious. Spicy octupus salad is a must and a Marylin Monroll to finish your dinner. So savory. Kurosawa Saki to go with.
We come here almost every week. Their lunch special is great, and sushi, sashimi, everything very fresh!
Been coming here for years. Always great!
Came here for my 21st and the food and drinks were the best! My all time favorites are the lobster roll and Spicy tuna rolls!
Fantastic fun experience with incredible service. Portions were super generous and the sushi was fresh and perfect.
I've only been here a few times but each time was very good. The hard part is choosing. There are so many yummy options. You can't go wrong with the Kiss of an Angel or the Marilyn Mon! I look forward to returning to try and find another new favorite item to add to my list.
I love this place. Quiet sushi bar that is elegantly decorated. The food and the presentation are outstanding. I had the Sushi Burrito and Amaebi(sweet shrimp). I hadn't been in town for a while. I'm glad they survived the pandemic. I'll be back. Thank you.
Always a good experience coming here
LOVE me some Zen Sushi. Great menu, excellent pricing, and a nice place to get together with friends for lunch.
I travel to Aliso Viejo frequently for business, and I enjoy great, creative sushi...Zen Sushi is very pleasant, the staff is welcoming. The menu is very explanatory, particularly when it comes to house 'specials'. The sushi chefs obviously took pride in what they were making. This is not a high-end sushi joint, but the price is right and the quality/service is great. Nightly/Daily/Weekly Specials (rolls, fish, etc) are posted behind the bar; I unfortunately missed them from where I was sitting. Will try them next time!
Best sushi in Aliso! My fiancée and I frequently visit and have never been disappointed. Love the Baked Salmon Roll, Dragon Roll, yellow tail and more. If you're on the hunt for good sushi in the area, look no further.
Amazing sushi! Loved the atmosphere too. My favorite roll was one that instead of seaweed and rice it was inside a hollowed out cucumber. The salmon was the best I have ever had. Thanks guys my wife and I had a great date night.
My daughter and I went here for lunch and loved it. It was quite, the service was quick and friendly, the food was delicious. After only one visit, this place is definitely on our sushi list of great local restaurants.
authentic and fun place to eat sushi. we brought the kids and they were very attentive and helpful with them. sushi was good, fish we fresh and tender and they had many options for specialty sushi and standard sashimi and hand rolls as well. restraint was clean and there was plenty of parking. only draw back would be the limited sitting space, as is the same with most sushi places. so expect to wait if you're there at peak dinner time (6 pm).
Best sushi in the area. Our families favorite place and we are often here to support June and the business. The blue crab hand roll is a favorite. For rolls, try the Yummy Sea Bass or the Baked Salmon Roll. If you get John or Sam just ask them to create something - they are both AWESOME! If you like oyster shooters, have one with John - careful on the heat, he likes his spicy. Truly a fantastic little sushi spot and the sashimi is always fresh!!!! Gotta try this place!
I have been going here for years! Best sushi around. Owners are so nice & such good quality. Kiss of angel is my favorite. Yum, this is the place for sushi! Also one in Dana point.
Love our neighborhood sushi bar! Staff is amazing and so fun. Definitely a place filled with local repeat diners. A very good testament to the consistancy of the fish quality!
Phenomenal flavors. It is evident that nothing is of low quality here. The baked scallop roll was ridiculously tender, especially for the price. Incredibly friendly staff as well.
Hands down my favorite sushi spot in south OC. Great service, great staff. Highly recommended.
This is the best local sushi around. Been going here for years and never disappointed. Service is great and quick, everyone is always happy to see you and the quality of sushi and sashimi are top notch.
I try to go whenever I can. this place is my favorite sushi place in southern California, even when compared to some of the higher end places. It's an awesome hole in the wall place with friendly staff, great food at a decent price. Also, you have to get the marilyn monrolls, best item on the menu
What I like here are they have bento lunch meals. Other Japanese food place only offer sushi or noodles.
Absolutely delicious and an awesome staff that is on point and friendly. It did not take long after we ordered to get our food! Would definitely go back
Had an amazing lunch at this place and would absolutely recommend. The service was amazing and the sushi was some of the freshest and best I've ever had. Definitely recommend for a good sushi craving.
This place is such a little gem in our neighborhood. They make you feel special the moment you open the door when they greet you! The food is fresh and excellent in taste! Service is A1 and you can't beat the prices! My wife and I have been going here steadily for over 14 years... We've tried other sushi places but we always come back here because this place is special!
Very nice and intimate environment with amazing service and absolutely beautiful sushi. An excellent selection of Sake that pairs perfectly with the fresh fish. The staff are welcoming and kind I will be coming here whenever I am in town. If you haven’t tried, please come on my recommendation.
We love this place. We go every week. The sushi masters and the lady at the front are so so nice!. Thank you for always make a great sushi and give us a kind and happy service :)
I've been eating here for about 6 years. I love Zen because they are incredibly kind and offer great food. Their indoor dining is nice and so is their patio. The sushi is fantastic, especially when you consider the price. I've been doing a lot more take-out recently given the public health crisis and they make it easy and safe! My favorite is the Aliso Viejo roll. Check it out!
Great food! Delicious rolls. Love the blond lady manager here too. Friendly and helpful.
First time visiting. Great service and delicious sushi at a decent price.
The patio was nice, the customer service was excellent, and the sushi was exactly what I was looking for. I got an 8 piece sushi (a piece of fish on top of some rice) and 10 piece sashimi (fish slices only), and it was delicious. I could tell the fish was fresh and high quality. I will definitely come back. The edamame was piping hot and my vegan partner enjoyed her dishes as well. An easy five star rating!
We LOVE it here! Weekly dinner! Baked lobster roll, baked salmon roll are impeccable. Never disappointed! We swear it gets better every time! Also the seared garlic albacore is like butter. So delicious. Absolutely eat here. Jenny & Michelle are absolute angels!
By far the best Sushi place in the area! There are two equally good sushi places further away, but I cannot recall any that is better! Food is always delicious, fresh, and very friendly and fast. You can tell that the chef is very experienced and knows how to deliver the experience! I feel lucky to live really close! :)
If I could give this place 10 stars I would. Possibly some of the most delicious sushi I’ve ever had. What a gem of a place! HIGHLY recommend!! Staff are service are also great!
This was our second visit here. The service is friendly and fast. The choices are all superb. Really enjoy the atmosphere and food, will definitely return.
Me encanta el sushi...😋atienden súper bien...
Excelente lugar
I'm updating my review after a couple of times we went there, so the food is great I can't deny that. But staff...I'm really disappointed about that. They are super slow, they basically ignore you most of the time. If you are ordering appetizers be prepared that they are going to forget about that! One the worst services that you can experience!
Very small sushi spot. However the sushi is good compared to a lot of other places. They have bar seating and tables. I gave 4 stars because I ordered a fresh roll and felt somewhat warm. (Didnt get sick so It was probably just me). Also I asked before hand of they accepted contactless payment (wallet was stolen lol) They said yes. I asked if they accepted Google pay and said yeah. Turns out it was only apple pay they accepted and I had to go to the stater bros to take money out. Which i had to spend over $5 to get cash back. A bit of an inconvenience since i asked before hand. But apart from that, the service was good. If in the area and are craving sushi, this place will satisfy your appetite.
The website does not work. The information on Yelp and Google is confused and misleading. There are too many places with this name and the web can't keep them straight with the help of people posting the wrong locations menu to a different place. All pretty confusing. Once you go over the wrong menu and get a family sized order together and call it in, you realize the menu was wrong and tou have to do it all over again.... So that was just leading into the front door.... I got in and was handed a sushi bar menu and a pencil and had to go thru the process of finding everything one more time on this new sheet. Got it done and the older sushi cheif starts correcting me on where you check for cut and hand roll. Not an issue but he did it with a pretty good attitude as if I just failed his little test. I remember a review that gave them a low rating because of a rude sushi cheif and I think I meet him! He wasn't that bad but not really a people person. The food order was fast in and out and I was on my way. The food was really good although the special sauce for the Night Roll was yucky. I hated the experience of trying to order online and deal with tech impaired ordering. But the food was good. I posted 3 pages of the menu as clear as I could with the room lighting from a phone. Menu pg1-3. These files go with the location and Zen Sushi name. If in doubt call or better yet, just go there....
Actually, the people are Korean. Great sushi and sashimi. Not very good kids food. Teriyaki was hard and not tasty. Go without the kids send sit at the bar.
my favorite sushi roll that they server is the aliso viejo roll. i have been to this place 3 times now, and when i go while it's not busy, the chefs will give me a free appetizer sample with my check. when it is busy, they don't.
Little hole in the wall place. Fish is fresh but portions could be better as well as an update on the atmosphere.
Sushi is as good as I've ever had, and the chefs always hook me up when I'm at the bar, but the take-out has never been as good.
The food is very good here and service is pretty quick. However the place is really busy during lunch and it is hard to get a table. The restaurant is very small and seating is not very comfortable.
This place has excellent fresh sushi at a great price. It is sort of small inside but they also have outdoor patio seating available. We go as often as we can, some items that I love there are Sushi Nacho (Soo good!) made with spicy tuna. I also love the cucumber salad, the "Hot Night Roll" and the miso soup is also awesome!
Really good food, really great staff, it's always a treat to come here. The bathrooms aren't really that clean so go before you go but other than that really good place. The calamari tastes very rubbery so might wanna stay away from it but the scallops are delicious. Highly recommend if you love sushi and a nice family environment.
This is a good neighborhood joint. It's not fancy, but the food is solid and the staff is attentive and friendly. If you go regularly, they'll remember your name. The have indoor seating (sushi bar and tables) and a small covered patio. They have fun hand-lettered signs with specials. Halibut carpaccio was one the specials tonight. If you go for lunch, they've got bento box specials that are tasty too. RECOMMEND
Food was good, service was prompt, but the atmosphere wasn't that great but tolerable.
This place was recommended by a local and I decided to try it. I had the Crunch and Double Double, and a HUGE glass of iced green tea. Good atmosphere and a clean bathroom. It’s worth a try.
The hostess there is the most unwelcoming hostess I have ever seen in any restaurant. But the sushi is good. So I am giving it a 3 star.
The place has a great ambiance and the staff were friendly but we did feel rushed to finish and leave. The food was mediocre, the majority of the rolls are based on the California roll and the noodles. Overall, not the worst place I’ve been but far from great!
Picked up from here yesterday. I ordered the miso soup, udon noodles and the zen combo platter. Honestly, the sushi was not fresh and it was poorly cut. The udon was bland, but the miso was good. Overall disappointed. The ambience is great here, so maybe it was an off day, or maybe I shouldn't pick up sushi.
I dont understand 5 star reviews on this restaurant. unless you have never had good sushi this is a 3 star sushi restaurant no better no worse. they serve the cheapest saki there menu is dirty the bathroom is 3 star and the food is just average looked great but the fish except for our salmon was way too old and more like the cheap sushi places that taste like some sort of preservative.... the fish was served in large portions but low quality 2 people 1 large beer 1 large saki 80 bucks not even close too worth it.... dear owner everyone was very nice but when u have customers having sushi at 9 pm and you close 1 hour later please dont have your guy taking the trash out straight from infront of our table like 3 times ... it makes me smell the trash when im eating raw fish ..... i tipped 10 bucks it wasnt because i enjoyed the atmosphere or the food it was because everyone was nice ... 3 stars!!!
Maybe it's better if you don't order take out... Sloppy rolls with no rice/seaweed at the bottom, cut in varying awkward sizes. Weird shiny tuna. And whatever that stringy looking fish is... I ate a few pieces and then lost my appetite.
I went to wash my hands after I eat and almost threw up. Food wasn’t good enough to stomach to come back.
Hastily made sushi. Low-quality cuts. Poor presentation. Off-flavors. The countless 5-star reviews are from people who haven't had good sushi.
I'm sure people might like this place because the five huge pieces of fish on the sushi but the quality was low. The dumplings and tempura tasted like they were fried in the same fryer. The pork cutlet was extremely thin and tough and stringy. On a positive note the service was good.
loved the place until chris one of the chefs had a big mouth on him . john is amazing and would only return if chis is not working
Extremely rude staff and sushi gave me food poisoning. Loud and overall a horrible experience. Would not reccomend
Will never be coming back here, the owner yelled at me because I asked the server to take 2 items off of our bill, tasted rotten and not fresh I've been coming here for years the amount of disrespect and yelling at me how dare you. Learn some people skills and acknowledge the customer is always right.
This restaurant has very rude and uncouth employees. I placed an order, went to pick it up and had to wait on the street because according to the lady I couldn't be inside.
Food was pretty regular, very standard..place is TINY, but what I didn't like was the Lady added an extra $30 to my bill?...she thought I wouldn't notice?...so when I asked her , she became a bit aggressive and perturbed then handed me a different bill and acted like it was my fault...really lady, I saw on Yelp where you have done this to others also..you should be ashamed , you lost my business and I eat sushi once a week!
Awful. If you like mayo and fake crab, this place is for you. The service is awful and the sushi is way over priced. I've tried a few times, it is always awful.
Food may be good but customer service is subpar. I went here at 2:10 to order a cucumber and avocado roll. According to their website they close at 2:30 for lunch break. I opened the door and was told immediately they were on their lunch break. Let’s just say pregnant hungry lady about to order a roll that would take all of 5 min to make, will be sure to NEVER return. Thank you for being so kind and understanding. Maybe you should have asked what I wanted before you sent me away. Wouldn’t have been too much of a burden if you did. Have a beautiful day. Good luck.
Do not do take out order. It's so small like a kids meal. You have to order more than 1 roll otherwise will be hungry in 10 min. Rolls are small and quality not so great and it doesn't make for bad attitude. Very uninviting and unpleasant same of the employees . They look at you like they are doing me a favor. Will not recommend this place . There's other places much better for the s as me price.
Avoid this place at all cost. Really not sure how they got a rating of 4.3. food was mediocre, I asked the owner /manager for a few plate for my family and when she brought them to the table she left all four plates in front of me and just left, expecting me to pass them out at the table. And to top it off the table when we got thier was sticky. There are many other sushi joints with better prices and better atmosphere.
I walked into a hot stuffy place that smelled of stinky fish not being kept cold in the eight temperature . Sat down and a dirty towel to wipe down the bar was left on our menu to greet us. Looked at over priced menu as the smell got stronger. Chef near us was making something behind the bar and a pice of crab meat flew and landed in front of me.... Got up and left. I don't wish to chance me getting I'll from this....food..... will never set foot inside again!
Just had a horrible experience with trying to dine-in. A sign at the door stated to sign in and wait outside so we did. Another couple walked up and put their names down then got someone's attention to ask how long the wait was. That employee said there was no wait and sat those people right away even though we were here first. We went in to ask why and were directed to the back patio by a man behind the counter who literally said to go ahead because we were there first. Once at the back an extremely rude woman immediately told us to go back to the front and wait. We tried to explain that we were sent back by a man behind the counter but she very rudely cut us off and told us again to go wait at the front, then shooed and followed us. She and the man behind the counter got into an argument and we were told again to wait out front so we just left. This will be my first and last time ever coming here. Unbelievable.
They double charged me! Beware and make sure you ask for an itemized receipt. I ordered a specialty roll, mochi and a small cucumber salad. I paid over $20 for this and when you look at the menu and pricing it does not add up! They thought they could take advantage of me. I will not be back.
Tried ordering online(I’ve ordered online here before and had no issues). System charged my credit card twice, and when I went in they had no record of my order. Instead of trying to remedy the situation, the answer I was given was “sorry we don’t have your order”. No attempt to try to give me what i ordered, or give me my money back. So now I’m out over 100 dollars and was given no food???? What kind of customer service is that-zero.
1 star for the serving lady, wearing her black disposable gloves at all times. From table to table, takes payments, cleans tables, serves water and plates, same gloves;(
Service Animals are Not welcome!! As we entered with our service dog, owner rudely asked for the dog's registration and for us to leave. Apparently, no one told him about CA state law, that IN RESTAURANTS where people are expected to frequent, he can only ask two questions...If he is a service dog and what type of service does he provide. Owner, please review ASA's regulations and become familiar with the law. After many years of supporting your restaurant, I can't believe the embarrassment you caused me and my family, shame on you!
