Tamale House East is a family-owned gem known for its authentic Tex-Mex, especially the tamales. Customers rave about the beautiful patio, friendly service (especially Carmen and Diane), and the overall atmosphere. Some find the QR code ordering impersonal.

We love coming down here, it has gorgeous outdoor and indoor seating. The decor, plants and music, I love it all. It is quiet but they are very attentive. I have ordered the mole tacos, chilaquiles and enchiladas before, all were spectacular! And the margaritas are so delicious. (We love grabbing the prickly pear )
Recently ate here while visiting my friend who lives in Austin. We got in about an hour before they closed and received good service. Your place your order through your phone by scanning the code on the table. Had the chicken tamale with mole plate. It was very good, mole tasted like mole and the tamale was not dry. Would go here again.
I'm posting about this 5 star experience while sitting at the bar letting this deliciousness digest. I visited Tamale House as a final stop on my way back to Houston. I cannot recommend enough that you do the same! The food, the atmosphere, and the family that work here are all a joy. Pro tip - the migas with bacon, salsa, and cilantro is 👌💯🔥 Thank you Diana and Carmen for a wonderful part of my Sunday! Cheers
I feel like this place is a hidden gem, I came here for brunch a few weeks ago and really enjoyed my chilaquiles. We came back for dinner tonight and the Al pastor tacos were amazing. The mole tamale was also delicious. The outdoor patio is such a vibe. The owner is very sweet and came by to check on us.
Historic Tex-Mex restaurant on East Sixth offering extensive menu highlighted by tacos and tamales, carrying on a tradition since 1958. It has some of Austin's most beautiful patio space, and the indoor dining rooms are no less amazing. We loved their breakfast tacos made with outstanding homemade flour tortillas. The real standout is the phenomenal chipotle migas taco, with scrambled eggs and crispy corn tortilla chips that get tossed in queso with a smoky chipotle salsa, all on a freshly made flour tortilla. One review said: "It’s a rare chilaquiles-adjacent evolution of migas, and something that should belong in the Museum of Breakfast Tacos." Their namesake tamales are excellent too. They have a parking lot in front and street parking in the back.
I absolutely love this place. Diane, the owner, was very attentive to us. And she's just cuter than cute. This is old Austin, that so many people cry about. We've lost, it's still here. You just gotta look between the huge building next to it and that it's about 40 or 50 yards back from the street. The food, as every time, was incredible. We both had migas just different add ones, and the place is decorated, so fun. It's got a little outdoor place. If you choose to eat out there and just not enough, can be said about this landmark. It arrived in Austin in 1958... And it is amazing..
Tamale House East is an old Austin gem. Family owned and run. And one of my favorite spots in town. They have limited hours focused on the weekends, so it’s perfect spot to fill up or grab a snack in between the bars or on your way to Yellow Jacket next door. Don’t sleep on this spot! The food is delicious - they have the best and brightest salsa in town. Nothing fancy, but a bright and traditional red salsa with fresh tomatoes. Centrally located on East 6th, but tucked deep into the parking lot away from the street chaos. There’s ample free parking (it’s a paid lot they own, so just scan the QR code when you get inside and they’ll give you a code to make it free). The atmosphere is dreamy. Read: it’s *covered* in plants. It’s low key and feels like home, nothing ostentatious, just authentically itself. There’s a greenhouse vibed dining room littered with plants, and ample outdoor seating if you prefer the outer realm. Hot tip: order chips & salsa, Mexican coffee (horchata cold brew), and a tamale plate with mole. And make sure to check out the party bathroom with the disco toilet (the bathroom door to the right). 😏
Some of the best tamales out there! The pork one was perfect and the green sauce was sooo good! Breakfast tacos are also delicious! Oh and free parking!
This place is a special gem!! Authentic as it gets. The best tamales I've had in my life. Don't short change your self and not also get their mexi-coffee as well which is their home version of an iced horchata.
Ms Carmen is an austin legend. The best atmosphere on east sixth, argue with a wall. There’s no topping this original, Latino, Mexican woman-owned establishment. Seriously such great humble people. Dog friendly, kids encouraged, right off the bus line with tons of parking in front and rear.
Our family visited Tamale House East on a Saturday early afternoon and were met by Carmen, who was friendly, responsive and wonderful throughout our dining experience! Tamale House East includes a florally beautiful outside seating area which I was told will, some time in the near future, have misters to cool diners. The atmosphere, indoor and outside, is relaxed and pleasant. We were started off with complimentary Chips and Salsa. The Guacamole was a dream, a it tasted freshly made. We ordered the Mushroom Spinach Enchiladas, the Vegi Guac Tacos, the Tamale Plate (with Pork - choice of Pork or Chicken) and the Cochinita Pibil. We also had Mole, Avocado Slices and Spanish Rice on the side (though the Mushroom Enchiladas come with Spanish Rice). I drank a Cranberry Juice and my 3 family members enjoyed a pitcher of Prickly Pear Margarita. All of the food was well- presented, tasty and well seasoned. The Mole was exceptional, with well-balanced notes of chocolate and spice. (This description does not do justice to the rich but not overpowering flavor of the Mole.) There is a large parking lot outside of Tamale House East with 2 Hours of free parking. Tamale House East is a wonderful place to enjoy great Mexican food. We will return and highly recommend that everyone enjoy this restaurant.
Perfect atmosphere. The friendliest staff. And the food and coffee is SO GOOD

Great Tamales and tacos. Fast service and easy to order from your phone.

I'm so glad to have found such a fantastic family owned place! The service was kind and attentive. The food was fresh and abundant. It was appropriately priced for quality and size for the area. The kitchen, bathroom, and dining areas are spotless and have a artistic flare. 10/10 will definitely be back!
This place is so underrated and so good! It has an adorable patio area that is perfect for bachelorette parties or girls dinner. The tamales are amazing! Margaritas are great and it’s all at a reasonable price. I actually hope the place gets more attention because they deserve it! 10 stars!!
How have I never been to Tamale House before? What a GEM. The food was wonderful, the service was great, and they have the most amazing collection of plants on the patio and indoors as well. It's like a lush tropical garden with really good food. It would be a great place for a party!

This place was tucked away right off 6th street in Austin. It's a family owned business established in 1958. Amazing. They must be doing something right. My husband spotted this gem by the big tamale banner they have close to the road. There is a paid parking lot in front of their restaurant and they will validate your parking for up to two hours if you eat there. As we walked in, the decor was..... alot. To us there really was no rhyme or reason to it. More like, 'wooo i like that, let's put that here. And I like this let's put that there' type of Decorating. This is definitely a 'hole in the wall' eatery. The food is where it's at. My husband got the pork tamale dinner plate. It came with one texas sized tamale, rice and beans w/ side of your choice of salsa. The tamale was the size of a small burrito. It was HUGE and tasty. It did have alot of masa but it had an equal amount of pork inside too. I had the cheese enchilada plate. The enchiladas could have been warmer/hotter so the cheese could melt. But the taste of the ranchera sauce was good. The rice and beans were pretty good too. They do not serve fountain drinks, which is something I truly enjoy when I eat out at restaurants. So that was a bummer for me. Our overall experience was a good one.
Got the vegetarian tamale and a mango margarita, a little pricey but very yummy
Cute and cozy side room. The main dining room has a bar atmosphere. The interesting thing is now they only do phone orders and bring your food to the table. The food was good. Texas sized tamale plate was actually enough food for me with their complimentary chips. The chicken enchiladas were also enjoyed. The validate 2 hours of parking

Really good pork tamales. I gave them only 4 stars because my review is based on a comparison to my immediate family's recipe. The masa was a little different than I'm used to but really good and cooked just right. The pork was also really good and the masa/pork ratio was just right. They were just slightly greasy, but that's just the healthy me speaking. I actually didn't mind it as it wasn't too much to the point where I couldn't eat them. I'd definitely like to try some of their other tamales. So, give 'em a shot. You probably won't be disappointed.
The room is cute. It was QR code style ordering and we were barely tended to. I had to take half pitchers of water that were abandoned by past customers. I also had to find cups, cutlery and napkins my self. They were not slammed. We were in one of the dining rooms completely alone. Tamales were big but on the dry side. Salsa and queso were excellent.

First time to Tamale House and most likely our last. Had the “migas” plate but I’m Not sure why that is called migas. Super disappointed, mostly crispy tortillas and the plate looked very unappetizing. Had to place my own order, tip and rate before getting our food. Wayyyy over priced! The place is beautiful but the sore on the, I guess hostess was uh, gross. Abreva girl! This is my first ever bad review, because it was bad y’all! Sorry Tamale House!

Will NEVER come here again. Be prepared to read or skim through on why. When I think of the name Tamale House, im expecting to find a WIDE variety of tamales. I was very disappointed that this place only has 3 kinds: pork, chicken, bean&cheese tamales. 1 tamal is $8, yes they are very chunky corn husk tamales, but most of it is from the masa which is very DRY and crumbly. Idk why the reveiws say they are not dry. The pork is also very dry. If you are wanting to buy AUTHENTIC Mexican tamales, this place is NOT IT. This is more of a TEXMEX tamales. I think any mexican will tell you, after trying these tamales, that they are not authentic mexican style tamales. Also there's a bean and meat taco that the picture on the menu makes it look like its steak but its ground beef, with no description of what kind of meat it is. Ground beef and bean taco was giving taco bell, not at the taco bell price, and not as tasty as taco bell. Not to mention when you arrive there's NO ONE to greet you. Everyone who walked in after us was also clueless on what to do. As like us everyone had to walk up to the bar to ask. Then they direct you back to the entrance, where you put in your license plate to validate your parking for 2 or 3 hrs. Then you basically seat yourself, scan the barcode on the table, order and play all through the link. Then finally a bartender brings you a pitcher of water with water cups. That you serve yourself. At that point we were thinking, ok watch them ring a bell and we have to go pick up our order from the bar. The vibe the place was giving was not a self serve vibe. Burger spots give that vibe, or taco spots, and food trucks, but this felt more restaurant, waiter vibe. Except no waiters, no one greets you, you order yourself, pay yourself and no one checks on you. Some guests were confused on where to park, so the owner came out, cleared the air on what to do and then went around to ask everyone "did you validate your parking?" Which was nice but then she said "ok thats all I needed to know". And at every restaurang ive been to, when an owner comes out they ask how's the food, or if everything is good, or how is everyone doing. We were left with the "oh you just cared about our parking experience but not how our food is". Before we left we knew we would not come here again. Food is not good at all, its all basically self service but does not give self service vibe.
