I visited Polvo’s Mexican Restaurant because I heard they have the best micheladas — and I was not disappointed. I also love that they have a help-yourself salsa bar. I ordered the mole chicken enchiladas — they were a little spicy, but definitely the best I’ve had. Everything was flavorful and worth the hype.

Great spot to get authentic Mexican food. Good deals for drinks, we got a pitcher of the Mango Frozen Margarita, complemented by delicious food. It’s pricey, but the portions are huge and definitely shareable among 2-3 people. Lots of indoor and outdoor seating. Definitely needs a bigger bathroom area. Has live music sometimes, and a great fun ambiance. Parking is small.

We were in Austin and were looking for a good Mexican restaurant. We googled places and found Polvos. I'm so glad we did! They have a pet friendly covered patio and the walls are covered in art which makes it feel like your really at an authentic Mexican restaurant. They were very accommodating, the servers were very prompt and very kind, and the food was so so good! Definitely on our must eat list for next time!

Don’t pay attention to any of the bad reviews below. This place rocks from a Mexican POV. Get the fajitas and order a Mexican Martini. Trust me. Then sing along with the bartenders to Bad Bunny.

Always love the feel of this place. Plus the vegetables they have with the salsa is amazing. Local dive with awesome food.

Doesn’t look like much from the outside, but the atmosphere is very nice. The salsa bar is great, as were the enchiladas. Small parking lot, but also street parking available. Service was spot on.

Our Server, Janeth D. was great. We arrived right at 12:00 for the lunch rush. Janeth was great with every table. She is a hard worker and gets along great with all the customers. We also got help from Gabby, I dropped my napkins on the floor and she brought some new ones over to me right away. The food was tasty and great price as always. And the drinks were fabulous. We will be back soon again.

The best al pastor you can get, especially in their fajitas! Do yourself a favor and order the al pastor fajitas, you won't regret it! And yes partake in the salsa bar.

T

While the salsas at the salsa bar are sometimes so watered down that they resemble dirty dishwater, today was not one of those very rare days. Best fish and shredded chicken tacos I’ve had at any restaurant anywhere in the world.

Not sure about everyone else that gave a low rating, but my wife and I had a great experience here. We're from San Antonio and it was amazing. Carlos was our server and he was very friendly and attentive. Definitely deserved our 20%+ tip. They have a free salsa station, so I'm not understanding how people are claiming to have been charged for that. I ordered barbacoa and carne guisada tacos (a la carte) and the beef chorizo and egg plate; my wife ordered the veggie tamales and a side of rice and beans. Everything was delicious and brought out when ready so it wouldn't get cold. Would definitely recommend and come back when in town.

I got the Ribeye Fajitas and man they were great! So much food =) Also imbibing in a pitcher of Margaritas and many glasses of agua to stay hydrated. Great food with festive atmosphere.

Oh my goodness! This is my daughters favorite Mexican food spot in Austin and I can see why. The service was great and the food even better. Try the Povlos fish la Plancha! Not sure what that special seasoning is but it's crazy delicious. Best fish I've ever had at a Mexican restaurant anywhere period! Authentic as it gets, this place gets crowded for good reason.

J

Polvo’s is elite, no qualifiers needed. The atmosphere has real character, the food delivers every time, and it feels like a place that knows exactly what it is. One of those Austin staples where both the energy and the execution live up to the reputation.

Carne Guisada was amazinggggg oh my gosh. Amazing gravy flavor and home cooked feel. Alex is the best server!

Tasteful Mexican food, the salsa bar, margaritas and a variety of tasteful Mexican dishes! My family and I love coming to this place! The restaurant and staff are wonderful.

The portions are huge, the food is AMAZING & service was great! The atmosphere of the restaurant was as awesome for a Saturday night, not boring but not crazy. This spot is definitely a must!!

Atmosphere: Eclectic, chaotic, noisy, festive Service: The servers run constantly, but still find it challenging to keep up with the rush of diners at all hours Food: Queso is traditional yellow creamy goodness, love the salsa bar, tortillas are worth writing home about, and entrees are classic Tex-mex. Margaritas are a sure thing.

A

Food was excellent. Best Mole around, I highly recommend it! The salsa bar is a nice touch, just wish it wasn't an extra charge. Atmosphere is nice, music was a bit too loud at times but otherwise it's nice to be seated inside. I used to come here a lot many years ago, but then I feel the food and service went downhill. Now, many years later again, I feel it's back to its amazing flavors and the staff were very friendly. I'll be back again very soon!

Great little spot for breakfast tacos! The place itself was uniquely decorated, reminiscent of Mexican restaurants closer to the border. The breakfast tacos are simple with your choice of fillings and combinations, but they're really good. The flour tortillas are very soft, and they seem homemade (not sure if they are, though). The tacos are generously packed, and not only are they great (no frills) tacos, but they're also cheaper than most Austin tacos at about $2/taco. One odd bit is that they serve you free chips, but the salsa bar is an additional $2. Not a big deal, just a bit odd, and the salsa's are very good. Definitely recommend this place for their breakfast tacos!

I love everything about Polvos! We’ve been visiting for 10 years and the food remains consistently the best in Austin. First tip, pay for the salsa bar without anger. You’ll be rewarded with 4 of the freshest salsas made that morning you’ve ever had(all delicious)! Your can’t go wrong with any of their dishes, I love their green chili pork(be hungry), my wife loves their mole. Super nice service as well. Parking can be challenging i their lot, but plenty of street parking nearby.

Too good. Situated in the middle of the jungle, but downtown. Service excellent and very nice to strangers. Food great !

If you love spicy, you'll definitely love the Shrimp Diablo. Also, burrito can feed 2 people and absolutely delicious. Strawberry mojito amazing, but I will say depending on who makes it. Overall, you need to try this place.

We come from Los Angeles, Ca and were so happy to have found this restaurant. I had the pastor fajitas, my husband the pork in salsa verde and for appetizer we had the choriqueso. Total $76. Yes, a little pricey but coming from CA the prices seemed pretty much the same. Great staff, you can tell they are happy. A lot of people at the restaurant considering it was a Wednesday. If we are ever in Austin again, we'd definitely come back.

Polvos has freaking delicious food. We ordered the margarita and vegetarian chile relleno. Dang that chile relleno had it all - flavor, kick, cheese, noms. It was really great. The side of rice and beans was equally fantastic. I'm not sure what sort of secrete ingredients they put in, but that rice is the perfect amount of moist and shoot it has incredible flavor, same with the beans. I can't say the same for the margarita, but maybe the food took the spotlight? It's possible... next time I'll pay more attention.

Now this is Tex Mex, In a authentic way! Simply amazing flavors come from the menu here. All the meat we had was tender, and extremely delicious seasoning wise. Everything mingled together beautifully and was a delight to eat. I sampled about 6-7 different entres from the guests we were with and everything was emaculate. I personally thought the fajitas were excellent. Self serve chips and salsa is included in the dining experience. Definitely a must for any tex Mex lover. Give it a shot!

Food was great with a cozy atmosphere. Our server however was not patient with our group. We felt rushed and like a bother.

Polvos, on South 1st, has been a lunch spot of mine for about 15 years, and it rarely disappoints. It has that old school,  border town vibe, with a big beamed ceiling, glazed tile counter tops, bold artwork and fresh tortillas being made in the corner of the dining room. I think the only thing missing were the colorful party banners hanging from the ceiling. As of this writing they are still using QR codes to get a menu on your phone, whereas everywhere else I've been has gone back to using regular paper menus. One of the things I love about this place is the self serve salsa bar, and my favorite thing on it are the big chunky slices of spicy pickled carrots. And the green salsa is absolutely fantastic. Now, to be perfectly honest about this last visit, there was a mistake with my order. But one that I am happy that was made.  I ordered chicken enchiladas with a tomatillo sauce, and what I recieved was mole sauce instead.  I was a bit disappointed when my plate arrived, but that disappointment was relieved as soon as I took the first bite. The chicken was tender and juicy, and there was ample cheese throughout.  This mole sauce was smokey with just the right amount of sweetness and not at all bitter, like some I've tried. The Carne Guisada taco was filled just the right amount, except for the one grisly piece on the end (again not a big deal). The portions are very generous.  And everything came out fresh and hot. My waitress Leticia was friendly and very attentive without being overbearing or making you feel rushed. I am very proud to say that Polvos will continue to be one of my favorite lunch spots whenever I'm in South Austin.

sooo tasty and great portion sizes! there are so many vegetarian options too, i got the vegetarian enchilada and taco combo. the pickles and salsa is also so delicious. i liked the margarita, def a lot of alcohol! the staff is very nice too, and the restaurant is so cute. i would love to come back!

I had a $6 frozen margarita during happy hour, it was strong and tasty with a Tajín rim! Also ordered the flautas, I’d recommend the chicken. The salsa bar is a nice touch! Great service and fun atmosphere. We will be back.

The Good: The fajitas are really good! The standard beef fajitas are easily big enough to share and inexpensive considering the portion size. Pair it with the homemade tortillas that are so fluffy and you have something truly delicious. The service is also stellar, with very friendly staff to help you out. The Bad: The guacamole is not worth your time. It's priced pretty steep, especially considering the amazing fajitas, and it just isn't well seasoned. It ends up kind of just being mashed avocado (really needs some salt, maybe some lime). The chips are also disappointing. Don't waste your time with those especially considering there are such great tortillas in the corner. The Bottom Line: Some of the best Mexican food I have had. I love the tortillas and the fajitas and would definitely come back.

J
JAINEEL VYAS

Been here a couple of times and have tried other locations as well. The food is pretty good as compared to other restaurants nearby. Giving a 4 for this visit because the fajitas were very dry today so it was a bit difficult to have it without any extra sauces to compensate for the dryness.

C
Criselda Almaraz

Greeted and seated as soon as we entered. I am glad that we chose to split the order of six Street Tacos. Both the fajita and fish were cooked flavourful, and the servings were hefty with proteins. The fresh pico toppings with avocado and sprinkled cotija cheese were amazing.

Polvos is an absolute gem and vibe in downtown Austin. It has an awesome ambiance and some dang good Mexican food. The dishes are authentic and flavorful, and the portions are generous and satisfying. You can find classics like enchiladas, tacos, and fajitas, as well as specialties like mole, pozole, and cochinita pibil. The drinks are top tier and complement the food perfectly. They have a variety of margaritas, mojitos, and sangrias, as well as beers and wines. The service is friendly and attentive, and the prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity. Polvos is a great place to enjoy a meal with your friends or family, or to celebrate a special occasion. I highly recommend Polvos to anyone who loves Mexican food and culture. It's one of the best restaurants in Austin, and I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu items. Polvos, you have a fan in me!

M

I've been going to Polvos since the 90s. It's a lot more expensive than it used to be but the food is really good. This time I got the shrimp fajitas which I had never gotten there before and they were really good. That was my last meal in Austin before I moved. And if I go back to Austin I'm going to want to go to Polvos

M
Matthew Lewis

I always enjoy coming here. It still has the authentic South Austin vibe that is becoming ever so rare. The frozen margaritas are great and the main draw for me is the salsa bar with escabeche. I always end up getting the enchiladas Doña Clara which are always great. The other menú items are always consistent as well. Tortillas are made in house which is one of the things I always look for in a good Mexican restaurant. Don’t believe the one star haters, this place has a great atmosphere and really good food. If you’re looking to experience that indescribable thing that made Austin cool to begin with give it a try.

M
Melissa Neva

Hands down an one of the best frozen margaritas I've had. It wasn't crushed ice but rather a smooth consistency. Tacos were DELISH! Service was super nice too, our waiter switched out our chips for fresh chips during our time there!

S
Selina Perez

I love this restaurant, the salsa bar is great. I had the chile relleno with white cream sauce. To my surprise it had raisins and nuts which were incredibly refreshing and paired well with the pepper. I love their rice, the tacos are also good but if you are not a fan of veggies you might want to ask for meat only. My only complaint was that our waitress did not bother to inform us that the menu was a QR code. We were confused as to why she hadn't come by with any menu's after she took our drink order. Luckily we noticed a nearby couple using their phones to scan the code on the wall. We are not locals and were visiting from Houston so we had no idea about the menus.

When I arrived at 2 pm on a Saturday, I figured it would be more of a crowd but it wasn’t. I was pleasantly surprised! The service was fast, the food was delicious, the margarita swirl was delicious, and the chips and salsa were great! I highly recommend this place!

I’ve lived in Austin for 35 years. I was born in Mexico. I’ve traveled all over Mexico. I know Tex-Mex well. I hadn’t been back to Polvos for over a decade. I guess because I live a little bit out of town and don’t venture to South Austin as much. My wife and I and a friend went last night and had a lovely time. The service could not have been any better. The food was very good. I had a chile relleno with beef pastor. I normally only eat them filled with cheese, but the way they recommended this and it was excellent. My wife burrito was very good. No, this is not a Michelin star restaurant. It is not on this weeks’ ist of the hottest trendiest restaurants that will be forgotten next week.Thank God. It makes me sad that such a wonderful place that is an excellent representation of the old Austin would take grief from silly reviewers.

Lolani was amazing and my date and I couldn’t stop laughing and smiling <3 we had so much fun and can’t wait to go back! The drinks were soooo delicious! Mexican martini and coconut frozen margarita both with tajin rims <3 they were made really, really well! Had an amazing time at Polvos. We’ve been meaning to check it out when we come in town and I’m glad we finally did. Let me begin with the drinks, lol. The Mezcalitas were on point. I hit every smoky blissful piece of agave and tequila family heaven 😅 the food was great. I recommend the flautas, it’s kinda my thing to order to judge a place. Is that weird? Venue is family friendly, warm, and I thinks it’s so cute the owners will pop in and hang out at a table and just smile. They’re a cute old couple and you’ll just know it’s them when you see. Definitely a place we’re coming back to 🙂🌮🍹

Every time I visit Austin, I make it a point to go there. When I miss excellent Mexican food, this is where I satisfy my craving. Unpretentious, delicious. The enchiladas are excellent with lots of sauce and filling choices.

We got off the plane and we're hungry and had a couple of hours before check in. Polvos was down the road and looked welcoming... We were sat and provided chips. I asked about salsa and they had an area you could pick what kind of salsa you like. We tried 2 of them and both delicious. Server answered questions and we put in orders. Food came out not long after and I was shocked how large my burrito was, and the presentation was perfect and tasted sooo good. My husband had the nachos and said they are by far the best he has had. I had lots of leftovers and still tasted great reheated. We tried other places and regretted it, they didn't compare to here for us.

Polvos was the first Mexican restaurant I visited as soon as I arrived into Austin. The restaurant itself gives off great Mexican vibes and plays some really great tunes along with it. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious. The food tasted very authentic. The drinks were tasty!

Honestly I'm not sure why this place has a 4.2/5 rating, at the time I'm reviewing it. One of the best Mexican restaurants I've eaten at, hands down. The food was authentic, the atmosphere was perfect and the service was top notch. We never were low on drinks and we had fresh chips brought out when we were low. We ended up getting the ceviche, al pastor taco and fish taco. The ceviche was really good, and probably a top-10 ceviche I've had. Very generous amounts of fish. The al pastor taco was probably a top-3 al pastor taco I've ever had. The fish taco was the best non-deep fried fish taco I've ever had. I had expected it to be deep fried, but was pleasantly surprised when it wasn't. I also tried the frozen melon margarita, which was good, but I'd probably go for a different flavour next time. It was full of liquor - I know that much! Overall, great value for the food and service. We were prompted to go to this restaurant by some locals we met the night before. Very happy with the recommendation and I'm so glad we went! Note - the food ordered was for 2 people.

The fish fajitas here are one of my favorite dishes to eat in Austin, more people need to get hip to this it… Is always excellent even after the 10 years I’ve been eating here… Everything on the menu is amazing! I highly recommend!!! Mango margaritas are so worth it! My buddy said it’s the best Mexican food he’s ever had and he’s been all over the world! 👍🏼👍🏼💯❤️💥💥💥🎯

Everything was fantastic!!! The salsa bar tastes like heaven if you're into great salsa. The food was amazing. The margaritas were good. Our service was great 👍. Oh, and the handmade tortillas are delicious and super fresh, hot whether you choose corn or flour. The handmade tortillas make the enchiladas incredible 😋. We'll definitely be back to this location but not downtown, different vibe and service level entirely.

Very much seems like a local favorite. A little walk from south congress and the outside seems a little bit neglected but do not let that deter you. The pork fajitas and flautas were so great. When I’m Austin I would definitely return!

Went right before ACL for a little dinner. The fajita salad was $30 yikes. So had a steak taco and tortilla soup. We had two spicy margaritas. Too much jalepeno sediment in mine.

M
Matt B

The food is fantastic, the salsa bar was good (who doesn't like unlimited salsa!?) but limited in choices. The margaritas seemed to pack a punch. The biggest downside is there are no prices on any item on the menu. We spent more than we expected. Menus should really have prices to keep things fair and on the level.

S

Food was good. Margaritas were delish. This place is expensive. Idk if it was really worth it. There parking lot is not very big so it was a mission to get out parking lot:

This is one of our favorite places in austin. So happy to report that not much has changed in flavor and quality of food since before the pandemic. Quality and food is still just as wonderful as it was before. I will say this isn't the greatest spot for beverages, they don't really make margaritas the way I feel they should be at a Mexican restaurant. And the frozen ones have lower quality tequila. Their Mexican martinis also are pre-batched and not my favorite. Martinis really aren't something that should be pre-batched. I wish they did them better. I will say the one disappointing thing to see is the charge for the salsa bar even when purchasing meals and drinks in the past this used to be complimentary, same goes for the tortillas. Service is pretty average here but that's also not why you go. We love the food here, it's always so delicious no matter what we have. A must try if you have not been.

C
Christopher Escalante

We’ve dined here several times. The food has always been consistently good—no complaints there. However, the service can be hit or miss and has never really stood out. Some items feel a bit overpriced for what you get, but overall, it’s not a bad spot if you’re looking for decent Mexican food.

C
Cassandra Clemons

My first time. Service was not great. We sat outside. Ordered appetizers & food. Both came out together. A pet peeve of mine. This is not a good thing. Food was good. Different fajitas. The mole was good. Will try it again.

T
Tawnya Clark

Chill vibe and good service. The rib-eye steak fajitas were really good, and so were the shrimp fajitas, but I was surprised there were only 6 shrimp on the skillet ($33). I really liked the fresh flour tortillas. The frozen margaritas had the perfect texture.

A
Alexa Young

Ordered the flautas (one with chicken, one with beef and one with pork) the PORK was incredible. The chicken less flavorful and the ground beef the worst. I ordered the light brown beans and they lacked flavor too. My husband had mole enchiladas and liked it a lot but said the mole was strong and you could taste a lot of the cinnamon and clove in there more than anything else. They have this FRESH amazing salsa you can have with chips. Overall solid.

J
Jessi

Usually a wait. The fajitas are good. Not sure if you want to have an open salsa bar during covid though with a table literally not even a foot away with 5 people. That freaked me out. But the food was good.

Renee Riffee

Great quick bite and the nachos appetizer was a little small. I wanted a pile and there were only 6 pieces.

Barbados Pearl

Don't let the card tables and plastic chairs fool you. This place is always packed because the food is always great. I do think the place is overpriced. You can get food that is just as tasty ar a couple other places in Austin for less. I hope it's pricier because they pay their waiters more? But that's the only theory I have.

We came around 7pm on Friday and were sat right away! Ton of street parking behind. We ordered some queso and got it in less than 5 mins. Then ordered the 3 chicken fajita tacos and 3 steak fajita tacos. Also got the chile rellano with steak. Very good quality Mexican food and everything was prepared super fast! Also have salsa bar with delicious pickled carrots 😋 Total bill for the three dishes was $62. Can’t wait to dine again!

After having lunch there I found myself enjoying the enchiladas I had ordered. Each bite was very tasty and the food was well seasoned as you would expect. They have a fantastic yet quaint salsa bar that is their centerpiece. Like a fountain. I’ve been a few times before and wasn’t over the moon but it’s beginning to grow on me.

This is a big disappointment from my last visit. I ordered a combo plate of shrimp and fajita and literally got 3 shrimp. If I wanted straight steak i would've ordered that. Food tastes good but don't expect to get your money's worth for the combo with the shrimp. My mother ordered a combo of chicken and shrimp and the amounts were even. If price is the issue than please don't falsely advertise a combo when you are merely giving a side portion. Management was not at all concerned with the issue when i raised the concern. I do not appreciate the lack of customer service AT ALL. On top of that you provide all this meat and only 2 tortillas. I expected much better.

We grabbed some lunch while out exploring the town. We had their lemonade (so good!). The queso came with a side of meat and guacamole. The queso was good, but the guacamole definitely needed some salt and/or lime, it was like eating mashed avocado. I felt like the presentation for the queso could have been better for a $12 queso with such a small serving. The chips were a thicker chip and very crunchy; they tasted homemade. We also had their 6 street tacos with shredded chicken and fajita chicken which came with 3 different salsas. I really enjoyed the chicken fajita tacos, however they both were good.

Okay I got the migas because everything here is expensive. The migas were bland and I didnt eat the potatoes.

This place was okay. I had reservations but it took forever to be seated even thought there were clearly tables available. The service felt rushed. I had a Mexican Martini which was strong everyone’s else’s drinks were meh. I really enjoyed the salsa. The food was okay.

This is just average, slightly overpriced Mexican food. It's not bad, per se. It's just not particularly good. The salsas at the salsa station are good. Chips are fine. But I've had a variety of dishes here that are just OK. Today, I had the street tacos. Six for $17. Actually not a bad price, but the quality is just average. Corn tortillas are subpar. Fillings are just OK.

Food is pretty good. Their chips and sauces are great! The place is very crowded, with at least 20 minutes wait during meal hours. The drinks are not cheap, and not great.

Fantastic food. Place is a little grungy but don't let that stop you from going. Have fewer stars mainly bc it's not in the most convenient location and because of the overall look but the food is the best Tex mex I've ever had!

Only giving 2 stars for the ambiance and location… Service was about as bad as it gets. The server was rude and blatantly unfriendly. When taking our order rather than explaining what we could get with our chilaquiles he turned his screen around and made us read through the options on his pos system. Portion sizes were large, but the food wasn’t anything special. No salsa rojo on chilaquiles is pretty strange. Margarita was just bad. Would not recommend.

Update 8/20/22…. I would always get the vegetable flautas and I ordered them on 8/20 and all that was inside was onion and cabbage. The 2 cheapest ingredients and it was $18 for a plate!?!? They used to be stuffed with mushrooms and zucchini as well. I was so disappointed as we drove all the way from Kyle. Not sure we will be back anytime soon after this. Love the frozen margaritas! They also offer a lot of vegan/vegetarian options 😊

If you want to spend $16 on a regular sized guacamole and $35 on fajitas then you should put your clown hat on and get here quick. Of course then you get to sit on cheap plastic folding tables and chairs and shout over the way too loud reggaeton and Mexican music and call it a good atmosphere. Let me not mention all the construction noise here in the South 1st location. The food is meh as well and service is even worse. We didn't get offered any menus for probably 10 minutes and no one checked to refill water or ask how things were. I've had good experiences here in the past but maybe my memory is failing me. I don't see how it is highly rated. Good luck.

As a lifelong Austinite, I know Polvos and love supporting local mom and pop restaurants. Unfortunately our last experience was disappointing. The food wasn't great and was way overpriced. I get Austin is a foodie city, but most of the foodie restaurants are excellent. Polvos is selling their $8 to $11 Tex-Mex meals for $17 to $20. I get you want to stay competitive, but you can't serve simple Tex-Mex dishes for that price. The enchiladas de la casa and the fish and beef street tacos are just ok. We also ordered a top shelf margarita which did not taste top shelf and was watered down. Another thing is the sign out front says interior Mexican food. Polvos is Tex-Mex (ground beef enchiladas, yellow cheese...), not interior Mexican food. Maybe there are some things that reflect the interior Mexican food, but I didn't see any of it. If you love Tex-Mex, give it a try. If you're looking for authentic interior Mexican food, you may have to look elsewhere. On the positive side, the service is excellent. The staff is super helpful and friendly and checks on you periodically.

I was there with my sister, my son and her daughter. My son as he was eating he found a hair, didn't say anything to me until later that day. I only noticed he took a bite and left the whole plate. I order a plate of Shrimp, plate was $30 came with lots of burn veggies and 4-5 pieces of Shrimp and the Shrimp tasted like charcoal. My sister had tacos Al pastor, it was nothing but fattening on the tacos. The place was dirty and food was discussing, for 4 of us we paid a total of $179. Some prices are not on the menu. My sister also asked for a Paloma and the string had no alcohol and the cup was very dirty. We will never go back and now my family knows to never go to that place again, extremely and beyond disappointed.

Polvos in Austin was a total disappointment. They actually charge for a self-serve salsa bar—something every other decent place brings to you! For free. Then I found a hair in my food. Absolutely disgusting. And to top it off, they automatically expect a 20% tip. For what? They didn’t give me free salsa, they didn’t give me good service, and they didn’t even bring me my drink. Why am I tipping 20% when they did nothing to deserve it? Never coming back.

Overpriced food, don’t go during prime hours as your food will be rushed. Ordered kids nachos came out with the fixings for an adult. This is far from interior Mexican cuisine.. Fonda San Miguel prices with a taqueria quality food. Been 3 times in the last 2 months and there is no standard for plating. I can see by no replies to the complaints this place is about the money not the service or quality. Standoffish hostess who looked like she was ready to fight not worth the gratuity. Beans were burnt, ceviche was half the plate other half was fruit and salad. They sat us in a corner even though we are Mexican, they cater to a gentrified clientele. Lil Mexico down the street blows this place out of the water. Only good thing is the drinks but they are outrageously priced. Roosevelt room prices with warehouse quality. First timers ok but you’ll soon learn why this place is below 4.3 stars. I do not recommend this place. Go to papsitos, Fonda San Miguel or lil Mexico

Pretty bad service. We got the wrong order then we had to wait half an hour for a replacement quesadilla. The food was incredibly salty and the tortillas were terrible

Where is the Polvo’s I once knew and loved? That was my date night spot for years. The food was subpar and expensive for such a reduced menu. The server literally waived me off twice when I tried to ask questions. He then tried to charge me extra fees that are not stated anywhere on the menu or any signage. Nor was I informed. No, I did not pay those. I tipped minimally-10% maybe-for a truly disappointing experience. No stars.

Where to begin…… This was our first time here. We came here because my brother in law raves about this place.. Jairo was our server. He was EXTREMELY rude to us. Because of him we were at the restaurant longer than we should have been. Other tables received their food before us even though they ordered after us..He did not want to take care of us during our time there. I practically had to get our beverages, silverware, napkins and salsa. Basically everything!!! Needless to say, we will not go back or recommend this establishment to anyone. The food was subpar! Service was TERRIBLE and the amount of money spent was too much in my opinion.

I agree with the last review! -0 stars! Service took forever, charged $4 for “salsa bar”, the restaurant allowed a mentally unstable woman to rant and scream in a section of the restaurant where we were seated. Wait staff did not warn us of this “regular” before seating us. We had to move ourselves after 15 minutes bc we felt unsafe. In hindsight wished we would have walked out the door. We were here visiting from out of town & would NEVER recommend this place. Spent $106 for 3 meals, 2 margs, 2 sodas not including a tip. If you’re searching for authentic Mexican food choose somewhere else!!

I will never come back to this place. They charge you a service fee $3.70 if paying with a credit card so you better have cash. It was hot inside no ac, they don’t bring you hot sauce you have to get it yourself . They charge a gratuity for 3 adults and 3 kids $24.64 and charge just 3 enchiladas for $23.97 with no rice or beans. Our sever was David. The worst dinner ever

Your hours of operation are until 10P.M. We walked in at 9:00 P.M. AND we were told you decided to close early because you didn't have customers for a little while. This is upsetting and honestly hurtful to YOUR business. As someone that has lived in Austin since the 90s and tried to help support LOCAL businesses, this sadly is part of the reason your reviews are going down and why in the future establishments go under. If you want to close a full hour before, then you should change your hours of operation to reflect so. Consistency is key in keeping a restaurant open and thriving. We could have gone anywhere to eat, but WE chose Polvos...remember that.

Prices are ridiculously high for what you get and for the quality of the place. It looks old and cheesy. They charge you for the salsa without telling you, and then extra for the chips even if you didn’t ask for them. They just bring them to your table and add them to the bill. There’s also a $2 fee if you don’t pay with cash, and they include a 20% gratuity without mentioning it, then still ask for an additional tip. We were 2 adults and the waitress said she couldn't split the check!!! Very disappointing and not transparent at all. Don't recommend it. There are other restaurants with higher quality and so much better prices and attention! Horrible experience.

Honestly, It deserves 0 stars. Maybe it’s because i’ve actually had better food before but this place is ridiculous. Please don’t waste your money. $3.50 for salsa…… really. 18$ for a small quesadilla huh this looks great but the taste was bland, it was all drowned by these ridiculous toppings and had no flavor. I love onions, but these ones were terrible. I need another meal after this one. I don’t think i’ll ever financially recover from this 80$ bill with two entrees and two alcoholic beverages. Ridiculous. Please please please go somewhere else and don’t make the same mistake i did. I’ve had far better tasting tacos and quesadillas elsewhere. I’m furious to say the least.
