It feels like traveling back in time. Hospital de Sant Pau is an incredible place to explore. The architecture of the complex and the pavilions is stunning. It's rich in Moorish influences which is characteristic of the Modernisme style. Inside the compound it's very quiet and tidy. I can absolutely recommend wandering around and take in the history of this place. The underground tunnels connecting the buildings are a stroke of genius and it feels amazing to walk through one of them. I definitely recommend visiting this complex.
Hospital de Sant Pau is one of Barcelona’s most extraordinary and beautiful landmarks, combining history, architecture, and culture in a unique way. Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, this UNESCO World Heritage site stands out for its colorful mosaics, elegant pavilions, and peaceful gardens. Walking through the complex feels more like visiting an open-air museum than a former hospital, offering insight into early 20th-century medical innovation and Catalan Modernism. The atmosphere is calm and inspiring, and the level of detail in the architecture is remarkable. It is an essential stop for anyone interested in Barcelona’s artistic heritage beyond the usual tourist attractions.
We were so surprised we had never heard of this place. This was our second trip to Barcelona and we were so happy to find this place. The architecture is absolutely stunning. The tile work is amazing. The grounds are beautiful. We were completely blown away. If you enjoy architecture and history this is, without question, a too 10 must see in Barcelona.
Amazing experience! It’s truly surprising to see how people of Catalunya created this huge medical complex, with tiniest attention to detail when it comes to architecture. Definitely not your typical hospital! If you, however expect for it to be very educational medicine wise - don’t. You can see the history of the place as well as the founders of it but it’s not like a museum of medicine.
[To the attention of members of stuff: release the stuck pigeon.] Several pavillions are open and give a five at history of the hospital along with just observing the architecture. We got there to escape from the rain bit still you have to move between pavilions on open air. :) A pigeon got stuck between a window and balustrade, not being able to fly away (noticed on Dec 26, ~12:00, was there for an hour at least, see the photo). Personnel of the pavilion said they could not open the window. Please, release it somehow.
It is one of the most beautiful buildings in Barcelona. If you think it is beautiful outside, wait until you see what it is like on the inside. Man oh man, is it gorgeous!!! I was so lucky that I was passing by and realized there was going to be a concert that same night. I bought the ticket and enjoy the Christmas show led by a philharmonic Orchestra. Wow, what an amazing experience I had! It was my best night experience in any of the cities I visited in Europe.
Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau is what happens when someone looks at a regular hospital and says, “No, not depressing enough, let’s build a pastel colored fever dream where even the ghosts feel underdressed.” Designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, the overachiever who made architecture look easy back in the early nineteen hundreds, this place sprawls across more than thirteen city blocks, a UNESCO World Heritage site that looks like it was designed for patients who demanded marble mosaics while coughing up their lungs. Walking through it feels like entering a parallel universe where illness was treated with sunlight, tiled domes, and enough decorative detail to distract you from the fact that you were probably dying. The pavilions are so beautiful you start wondering if all the patients faked recovery just to stay longer. Even the underground tunnels look like a glamorous escape route for nurses who had simply had enough. If Gaudí was the eccentric uncle building lopsided masterpieces, Domènech i Montaner was the competent one keeping society alive, literally. Without him, Barcelona might just be a city full of whimsical chimneys and zero functioning hospitals. Perfect for architecture lovers, history nerds, and anyone who enjoys strolling through a medical complex where the only thing clinically sterile is your bank account after the entrance fee. Visit if you want to feel spiritually uplifted, architecturally humbled, and mildly haunted by the idea that hospitals used to look like palaces while yours looks like a tax office with beds. Highly recommended.
A truely hidden gem in Barcelona though it is not even on the top ten list for must seeing. The architectures of this previous hospital is beyond amazing. I wish they have more building's open to the public. Currently they have about ten buildings for showing. You could spend hours to enjoy them. In addition, the front gate of this museum is a very good spot for taking picture of the Sagrada Familia.
This is one of Barcelona's hidden gems that you absolutely must see. The hospital complex is an exceptionally well-preserved architectural and artistic masterpiece, featuring beautifully maitained interiors and a charmin exterior with gardens and orange trees, palms... It's definitely a visit you will never regret.
i had a wonderful visit. very well organised and beautiful place. i got a free visit (so no guide of any kind, just walking around for as long and where i please), and in some areas especially towards the end there was no english translation on the written plaques. otherwise wonderful place, wish it was more well known
Very impressed by the hospital de sant pau. Unless the main barcelona attractions, such as gaudi buildings ( sagrada familia, etc), this amazing modernist architecture buildings don’t have that much attention from tourist. This means you do t have to make a reservation in advance. But the visit is a must if you come to Barcelona more than 2 days.
As an Art Nouveau lover, visiting Hospital de Sant Pau was absolute heaven. It’s the largest Art Nouveau complex in the world, a masterpiece that combines beauty with practicality. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, its visionary architect, studied over 200 hospitals worldwide before creating this stunning design.
A beautifully restored and colorful old hospital. The atmosphere is great, and it’s fascinating to see what hospitals used to look like back in the days. Many of the buildings, rooms, and offices have been restored and can be visited. Lemon and lime trees grow all over the place, very charming and peaceful place (these days). An unusual place, I enjoyed it ☺️
An unexpectedly curious architectural complex of buildings of the former hospital. If you have already visited the Sagrada Familia, it is worth walking from the cathedral a few blocks northeast along the pedestrian boulevard to the quaint buildings of Sant Pau. The visit is worth the money, but perhaps the audio guide would be superfluous, it turned out to be rather useless. It is better to follow the route that is given with the ticket, all the information is on the stands. Between the hospital buildings there are nice shady gardens, very pleasant for a walk. It should be added that the museum has few visitors, which is especially pleasing after crowded tourist spots.
The first time we went here was around 330pm and was already late , so we canme back here and it was the best decision. This is an old hospital back in the days and now a museum. The place is so beautiful, this is a hidden gem in Barcelona . The place has a lot of beautiful buoldings and intricately designed. There are tunnels and its worth going down. Price is around $18 per person. which is very reasinable. You can just walk in and buy entrance tickets. The place is very clean and staff are very accommodating. Pls dont miss out on this.
One of the most beautiful places I visited in Barcelona. The architecture is breathtaking—colorful tiles, stained glass, and domes that feel more like an art museum than a hospital. Walking through the gardens and pavilions was peaceful and not overcrowded like other spots in the city. A bit off the main tourist path, but absolutely worth it.
Beautiful spot! Close to the metro, tickets and audio guide were purchased at the door. It’s a beautiful hospital turn museum. The complex is huge and so ornate and the administration building has a premier view of Sagrada Familia. Maybe not the top thing to do in Barcelona, but a great way to spend a few hours if you’re into modernist architecture.
Visited only because it is 15 mins walk near Sagrada Familia. Not good not bad, but once after visiting Sagrada Familia, this looks very average and there are much less tourists. Prefer spending your time in a cafe rather than visiting it, unless you are really interested. Or just have a photo without entering it. Consist of 7-8 buildings but only half of them are opened, not much to see and the chair are pretty dirty, i rate this 6/10
