This was such a fun experience! Totally unexpected. A restaurant hidden behind a new age shop, smoke and mirrors, literally! The food was delicious, and the staff was incredibly friendly. A super fun night, bring your witchy friends!
Great food, seriously better than a lot of places in San Francisco. The only thing is that they are made to order, so very slow services… the whole dinner took us 2.5 hours and seems to be an average time for all tables around us. Great food, great dessert. A little pricy. Still worth it!
La Yerbatera was such a fabulous experience. The incense filled smoky stairs to get to the speakeasy and the dried herb decorations were very on theme. Everything we tried was tasty, but I especially liked the osobuco.
I was initially afraid of going after reading bad reviews of the service, but I’m glad I didn’t listen! I LOVED everything about this place. We got served by Ignacio (the waiter with glasses everyone keeps referencing) and he was great , food and drinks both were served quickly and to PERFECTION, we were thoroughly surprised that every single thing was cooked and seasoned to perfection. And of course their drinks were amazing as well. The place is cozy, a little on the warmer side, but beautiful non the less. Entering the speakeasy through a hidden door through smoky stairs was super fun too!
This restaurant is an Experience. Not only does it offer delicious dishes the ambience is magical realism, romantic and unique. Second floor is a speakeasy. Lovely place for date night or a classy ladies night out.
This place was so much fun. We didn’t have a reservation but they had a table available so we could go on in. The restaurant is hidden, so you have to know it’s there, and it was delightful. The bar area is cozy and comfortable and the restaurant is a speakeasy within a speakeasy. I appreciated how they didn’t try to coast in the atmosphere but had a genuinely excellent menu. The seafood was excellent, and the wine selection was outstanding. If you’re looking for something different, with delight upon delight, I would highly recommend La Yerbatera.
We stumbled across this unique eatery in San Jose late at night. It is very much a speakeasy that seemed closed initially. Once we were let in, we went through a few false door bookcases and made our way up to the top floors. This is definitely the most unique place I've ever eaten and the food and drinks were absolutely delicious too. I highly recommend the Gin drinks and the Origen corn appetizer.
Literally a hidden gem in San Jose! Speak easy type restaurant that looks like a quiet Asian place from the outside but once you get in it is a cool house full of dried herbs and smells and candles and greenery! All the rooms look different and unique. The food is absolutely delicious! Served with herbs grown in house. Drinks are also high quality and are made with their own herbs. Definitely a unique and delicious experience!
Amazing experience. Reservation required for special experience which was totally worth it. No words to describe. You must go!
Very good food, the best dessert and cocktail I have had in A LONG TIME! Cute idea with the speakeasy, funky deco…. Would definitely come back.
Simply a magnificent experience. This little secretive restaurant is so enchanting, the only act of going in is magical and very unique. It can be a very romantic place to go with your loved one. The pulpo was the best I've ever had in my life and I highly recommend trying it.
Go for the experience. The food is rustic and very unique! I would have loved to see more dish options. That's it.
Cocktails and cheese fondue are fantastic, very nice ambience and great place for a date night.
Lovely and magical place to chill and enjoy
You must visit !
Absolutely amazing!
Lugar mágico y diferente. Ambiente irreal. Platos y cócteles creativos. Solo con reservación. Una experiencia necesaria
A truly unique, one of a kind dining venue and speakeasy - it's a transformative experience from the moment you walk into the atmosphere. The drinks are farm-to-table and the food is incredible. The owners are incredibly kind and oresent. Five stars hands down!
Good food with amazing blend of flavors and very fresh. Good service and very unique. A little bit on the pricey side but worth it.
A hidden gem. Best restaurant in CR
I cannot find the words to describe this magical experience. From the decor to the costumer service to the food it was simply perfect. It’s just too good —and too magical— to be true.
What a heel of a restaurant. This is absolutely an amazing and unique experience. The food is delicious, the drinks wonderful and creative. The atmosphere is unique.
One of the most unique restaurants I’ve ever visited. A must see when you’re in San Jose.
Food is very good and fresh. The atmosphere is very nice and romantic. Very nice place.
Its a little secret place that is extra special.
Amazing place!
A very cool experience
A gem in SJ!
excellent dine in experience
An amazingly unique experience with so much intention matched with delicious food!
What a great place. They have created not just a place to have food and drinks but an experience.. An adventure into a fantasy.. From secret doors to... I don't want to give it all away😃 When visiting San Jose, this place is well worth a visit
This place was very cool. Service was incredible, the waitress made recommendations and chatted a lot with us, despite our very limited Spanish speaking. Everything she recommended was great, and everything else was as well. We had 6 people in our party and tried a few appetizers, mains, and desserts. We all left very happy. This is now on my list of places to eat for the next time we visit Costa Rica!!! There is a secure parking lot in the back, with an entrance to it right next to the entrance of the restaurant, easy to miss.
We were a large group . We created a good ambience in a cool setting. Understaffed. I did not try the food. Cocktails were OK. As in Escalante, overpriced.
The food is ok, value for money is not good and need more dishes, the place and the service are great
This was the most delicious meal I've had in a long time. I loved the speakeasy/witch theme, the decor and the service, but they pump smoke into the air constantly. i almost left, and unfortunately this will probably keep me from returning. A real shame as I loved this place.
Just popped into this cool spot and wow, the drinks were beyond good they were killer! Everything tasted spot on. Plus, the way they presented each drink was like art. The vibe at the bar was just as awesome. Definitely making this my go-to for a chill night out. The food took a little while to arrive but everything was great overall. Ask about Rebbecca's cocktails, I'll definitely be back for more!
Ok, this is hard. I came here ‘cause some friends check this place in social media, we had high expectations. First, the place is like a speakeasy bar, is really nice, all the scenery is really cool! The fact is, we ask for some cocktails and food but it take so many time to bring us all. No 20 minutes, no 30, almost 50 minutes to have our food. We so disappointed, cause cocktails are unbalanced, food was good but so laaateeee. About the service was inefficient, some of my friends stand up like 4 times to ordered or ask for the food. This was a shame bc the place is really nice but I’ll never coming back for the experience we had :/
The dry ice is a vibe but food was pretty poor! Go for the vibe and the secret doors etc.
Confusing experience, lead upstairs, seated outside and made to wait for 15 minutes for our table… when in fact half the dining room we were seated at was empty.. no explanation to this whatsoever. Food is good, service was average. Won’t be back.
It‘s very overpriced. There are two vegan options for mains. The overall experience was okay, but we‘ve been to better places in San José. The entrance is shared with Persefone (which is the place we actually intended to go to, but then realised there were no real dinner options).
Total disappointment! I had high expectations, and from the moment that we entered and the waiter put his hand up, in a rude way, instead of just saying “welcome, I’ll be right with you”. Then they had us wait for 5 to 7 minutes, “because someone was going to get us”, nobody did and finally the same waiter came to open the door to the second floor, and called us in. The place was empty but they still insisted we sit in a small table. Seating is uncomfortable if you sit in a table for two. I was recommended a gin and tonic because it was their signature drinks. They said that they use Bombay but it was not and also the tonic water that they use comes in a big plastic bottle, and of course was flat in my drink. They also use only about 1 ounce of gin for these drinks. The presentation of the plates was impeccable but the execution and flavors, not great. The octopus was gummy, with no flavor. The mushrooms were served on stale bread, that to fix it, the chef just drowned it in oil to mask the flavor but the chewiness was still there. The mushrooms had no real counterbalance, as they were all set with balsamic reduction. The ceviche, the fish was dry, and overcooked in lime, then they drown this in a tomato juice that did not work. They say they are “ancestral” but they are serving me dishes that are not from Costa Rica’s ancestral heritage like the Peruvian dish with “aguachile” from Mexico. Nor anything else on the menu other than the fact that the use ingredients like pejibaye. Also the music was a combination of American with Peruvian, etc. not really going with the ambience of the place. They served me wine that had been chilled in a fridge and was too cold, I had to warm it up with my hands. In reality, not a place for wine, as they do not have a good wine selection, the wine by the glass was por quality. The stairs are dangerously dark and smoky, I get the ambience, but you can also be safe and have a floor light on some of the steps, unless they are waiting for an accident to happen before they do this.
food is amazing!! unfortunately my table had to wait over 2 HOURS to get the plates served
Great atmosphere going in and on the main floor. Loved the 'secret passages' and the fog. We were seated upstairs where it was rather boring, but the journey up the stairs was a unique experience. Had a cocktail which was watery and barely tasted like anything. Tuna tartare was decent. I ordered the chicken which honestly looked and felt like catfood. A soggy slop of shredded chicken bits with little flavour. Honestly the worst dish I had in all of my time in Costa Rica.
Not at the location indicated on google maps... Uber has the restaurant listed, but the app won't bring you to their front door... nobody we asked ever heard of it, no signs, no specific location information on their internet site, no address on google maps, et c, et c...
We really wanted to love this place. They were open on new year's eve which was huge. The speakeasy experience and ambiance were fantastic. The kids had a blast. Kids allowed at a speakeasy restaurant...wow! Unfortunately this ia where all the positives end. We arrived at 8:30pm for our reservation, ordered first for the kids and were served at 11pm. Even after multiple reminders to bring out the kids food they didn't seem to care. Half of the kids in our group were fast asleep by the time our food arrived and the staff could see that but didn't seem to care. At 11:20pm - 20 mins after our food arrived they told us to hurry up because the restaurant was closing. Food was horrible. We ordered steak, pasta for the kids, chicken, ceviche and the vegan mushroom dish. They ran out of trout. Everything we ordered was terrible. Steak was chewy, chicken wasn't seasoned well enough. Mushrooms were not bad. TLDR: Overall very disappointing experience for our NYE dinner due to poor customer service and bad food. They get a single star for ambience and speakeasy experience.
If you have time and money. Still I would I definitely go to another place to spend my money. Serving is looong was with a group a friends it lasted 1h 45 min for the main dishes to arrive. Very expensive. The drinks it's what get them the one star. Food is simple not very tasteful I had the pesto pasta tasted like nothing. Will not come back and I do not recommend
