I have been looking for a great Indian restaurant to eat at for a long time. I wish I had found this place sooner, when I lived closer. Everything was cooked extremely well, very flavorful, and without a long wait. The atmosphere was comfortable and very welcoming. My daughter and I were able to enjoy sharing some laughs and some good games of go fish while eating. This is a must enjoy restaurant. I will be making this a regular in my rotation of family owned/run restaurants.
The food tastes exceptionally good, offering great affordability and excellent value for money. The chai was especially Good must try beverage, with a rich aroma and perfect temperature. The panner curry was outstanding—tender, soft, and bursting with flavorful spices, making it truly enjoyable.
Had a wonderful experience! Ordered paneer curry, roti, rice, yogurt. The serving size was generous, food was fresh and warm, the atmosphere was cozy and they gave free desert in the end! :)
It was one of the best Indian meals we’ve had in the US. We had chhole bhature, kheer (rice pudding) and tandoori chicken. Felt straight from home from our kitchen with perfect balance of spices. Kheer has such amazing rose flavor to it and the sweetness was perfect!!! Given a choice, I would go there everyday since it reminds me of home.
The food here is so tasty. I've been here at lunch for the buffet and dinner and both are great. The service was friendly and efficient. I totally recommend it. I have the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Vindaloo with Paratha and they are always my choice of preference.
Had a lovely experience dining here at Jot Mahal! Staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming. The food is phenomenal, service is quick, portions are great, and the prices are too! Thank you to Gopi and Gurvinder for your above and beyond hospitality and kindness!
I went to dinner with my sister and best friend and was greeted with warm service, delicious food, and a beautiful view. It’s such a great date night spot, the lighting makes the whole restaurant feel so inviting, and our server was incredibly kind. He even surprised us with extra rice and a free dessert! Highly recommend. And the garlic naan? To die for.
Love this cozy and unique spot on shattuck! Food was excellent, we had the chicken curry and the lamb biriani, with some fried veggies to start. Great price too. Will 100% go back next time I’m craving Indian food. Goated. Aura high.
I have a couple allergies and haven’t been to an Indian restaurant in a while. The chef and owner was very helpful, making dal especially for me without the things that make me sick, and making sure that everything we ordered was safe. The food was delicious! The nan puffy and delicate, and the dal fantastic. It was my first time here and we are definitely returning.
Ordered catering from here for a large event. Everything about it was excellent. The staff were very sweet and helpful in choosing dishes. They even helped me load it into my car! The food was absolutely delicious, best indian food I've had in the Berkeley so far. Not to mention, the portions were very generous, my guests happily took away many boxes of extra food because they just couldn't get enough. The restraunt itself has a wonderful and homely atmosphere. Tried their lunch buffet before too and it too is excellent and very worth the price. Dishes I recommend: Pakoras, Paneer Butter Masala, Mix Veg
Went out to Berkeley to go originally to eat Indian food at another spot I went to a little hole in the wall post office somewhere in Berkeley to get change for a parking meter and the lady was Indian herself so I asked her I said hey what's good Indian food out here and of course she responded i make good food lol which we both laughed at which is the truth anyways she went on and said go ahead and check out jot mahl being a true fan of Indian food and have been eating it for half of my lifetime in various places here in California even in states also hands down this is the best Indian food I've ever tasted the flavor that pops off of this food is amazing not only that the quantity of the food that you get for depending on the price of what you get for everything that I got was a little over a hundred bucks which I ordered more here than I done and other Indian restaurants and I spet 50 bucks less here which is crazy cuz I ordered dump the amount of food anyways for those of you who don't know anything about this place or curious about this place definitely check it out if you're reading this review wondering if you should go here stop wondering pull up!!!!!!
A party of four, we were seated by the large windows lining the front of the restaurant. The food was absolutely delicious. We enthusiastically engorged ourselves on the palak paratha, onion & garlic naan, baingan bartha, chicken tikka masala, paneer makhani, and lamb vindaloo. Flavorsome and hearty, the dishes were on point. For dessert, we had one of each. We loved the delicate flavors of the pudding, the nuttiness of the kulfi, and the honeyed sweetness of the gulab juman. None of the desserts were too sweet, fitting our palates perfectly. I’m looking forward to returning!
Amazing service! Our waiter was phenomenal and really attentive. The food was super great aswell! I recommend the Chicken Tikka Masala and the Lamb Vandaloo. My waiter, Anamon, was super sweet. They even gave us complimentary desserts. The rice pudding and the Gulab Jamun was phenomenal!! It was so good I forgot to take a picture.
I went here with my girlfriend for lunch. The buffet was absolutely fantastic and we loved the taste of every item that was offered. My personal favorites were the curry paneer and the dessert rice pudding. The price for our meal was beyond fair and we can’t wait to take the kids here. Highly recommend.
Context: We came a little early on a Sunday before they officially opened so that could be why service was a little lackluster. The atmosphere was nice, they had music playing and I think the food could have been heated more but again, we came a little early.
Lunch buffet is a pretty good deal, $15 for all you can eat. There’s a decent selection of curries, both chicken and paneer, as well as cauliflower and pakoras. Naan is served as well. All of the food is really good, though I thought that the food could have been kept a little warmer. I went around 11:40am and was the only one there.
Ordered take out here for a friend's birthday party. Staff was very kind at pick up & gave us birthday candles so sweet! Unfortunately no rice was given with the 6 meals ordered 😞I guess it needs to be ordered separately? Which makes the cost of the meal more expensive (+ $4 rice). We were not told this at pickup & went home unaware with 5 watery dishes, with naan and an appetizer for $90. We ordered vegetarian meals none were labeled with name of dish. It was hard to tell what things were until we tried them. We we got 5 bowls of liquid and had to make our own rice at home so the experience for a dinner party was not great. Food did taste good though. We also ordered naan and vegi samosas which were delicious. I wish there was an option online for ordering the spice level! It was too spicy for half of our guests. But that was our mistake for not putting anything in the notes to ask for less spice (slipped my mind). Also would have been nice if online ordering stated rice is not provided with dish. Also In the recommended sides area rice was added as an option to choose.
For goodness sake. This place is so dirty I'm amazed it hasn't been shut down. Everywhere you set your eyes there's grime, dust, grease and dirt. If the elderly man who owns the place is there then check out his hands and work shoes. They are encrusted with old food. 🤢. Someone here wrote a 1-star review and reported they saw a mouse in the dining area. The waiter didn't care. Of course not. 😵
We used to come often. Just returned after a few months. The visit was very disappointing. The buffet food is still decent, but sad to see no more ice cream. The worst thing is the service. The waiter was horrible. We requested the naan breads, but he only brought one, from which each one of us got a small quarter piece. We then had to flag him down and wait another while to get another bread. He showed displeasure when we requested it the 3rd time. The young waiter before, with the louder, more modern music, is much better.
Beware - It runs a shady business by adding credit card charge to each food item without informing customers and by charging wrong item on receipt. Ordered 3 dishes and a garlic naan. The boneless chicken tandoori was good - we'd give it 4.5 star. The goat curry was ok - the goat meat tasted like lamb - 2.5 star. The chicken biryani was very wet and salty - 1 star. The owner took it back and added some more rice but it was still wet and salty. Garlic Naan was good but very burnt - 3 star. Here comes the worst part: the receipt came and every item's price were higher than the price shown on the menu. When we went to talk to them, the owner started yelling at us, saying the register machine charges the price, he couldn't do anything and we needed to talk to them - the register machine company. Upon pressing from us, the owner said the cash payment had a discount and pointed a little notice posted on the wall indicating the discount. We said fine, we will pay cash. The owner first said he couldn't do much to change the price on the register machine. We insisted, he finally offered a discount. We then discovered that they charged lamb biryani price on the receipt. They first didn't say anything about the error and tried to ignore us but finally produced a receipt with the right items and price. After we paid, the waiter said rudely: go, don't come back. Well, we will never come back. We love Indian food and had great experience at many Indian restaurant. This is by far the worst experience we had at any restaurant - bad food, rude, dishonest business practice. We are happy to spend our hard-earned money some place else.
