Cayo Coco brings a lively taste of the Caribbean right to downtown Birmingham. The moment you walk in, the colorful, tropical‑inspired décor and upbeat energy set you up for a fun night out — whether it’s dinner, drinks, or both. The atmosphere strikes a great balance between casual and festive, making it perfect for date night, a night with friends, or a celebratory meal. The menu leans into bold, well‑seasoned flavors. Favorites like jerk chicken, empanadas, and ceviche stand out for their authentic taste and thoughtful preparation, pairing wonderfully with the restaurant’s creative cocktail lineup. Rum‑based drinks are a highlight here, with daiquiris and specialty concoctions that feel like a mini vacation in a glass. Pair a flavorful entrée with one of their signature drinks and you’ve got a meal that’s both satisfying and memorable.
This place is so underrated. My wife and I go every few months and it’s consistently great. The Cuban sandwich is one of the best in the city, the empanadas are fantastic, the macaroni pie is excellent and, if it’s in season, the tomato tart is one of my favorite things I’ve eaten in Birmingham.
Date night date night date night!! The food was awesome, the ambiance was cozy and personal, and the staff was on point! You'll drop a Benjamin on your date but it's worth the occasional splurge. Parking can be a nightmare if you come on a busy night, so give yourself some time before your reservation to find a parking space (Not sure if you HAVE to have one but I'd assume so) Definitely will be coming back, this one scored me some points with the Mrs! 🤭
Dropped in for a late afternoon snack and found Cayo Coco comfortable cool and welcoming. The coco rum old fashioned was rich and delicious. Service was quick but not overwhelming. The decor is nice and seating is comfortable with a combination of tables, chairs, sofas and coffee tables. Fully recommend and I’ll definitely be going back. Urban Cowgill
We went to eat here during restaurant week, and ordered some things off their normal menu and also their limited restaurant week menu. The watermelon ceviche was amazing and was served with plantain chips which was super unique. I had the red snapper which is on their regular menu and was 10/10. We had a few different cocktails and loved them. The cocktails were very unique which was a nice change of pace. The atmosphere was relaxing; there’s an outdoor patio and front bar area for more casual and then a back room with a more upscale vibe. You can go casual or more upscale which I love. The owner was there also, and was super nice. I appreciate when management comes around to see how the experience is. Highly recommend!
Cayo Coco is such a cool spot in downtown Bham! Primarily reviewing the bar service/area because I’ve never gone for a full meal. The cocktails here are phenomenal every time, the staff behind the bar are always friendly and take obvious care in making good drinks. The atmosphere is so nice. I love sitting at the bar for a couple drinks and always leave in a good mood. Have had a couple of the small plates including the crawfish mofongo and enjoyed whatever I’ve ordered. Definitely a great spot for dates or if you have friends or family in town and want to do something different.
What a cool spot! The service was top tier, very accommodating, and gave outstanding suggestions. We got 4 appetizers, and honestly you could go drink rum and eat appetizers and be very happy. The appetizers we on another level. I have no complaints. The empanadas, so delicious and flavorful. The cornbread, was shockingly delicious! The tostones, wow! The cheese dip is the best I ever had. Dipping the empanada in that cheese makes my heart happy. The Cuban was good, my only gripe is it needed more mustard. It was still very delicious. All the drinks were amazing, I like sweet drinks so I got the guri guri and the zombie.
We had such a wonderful experience dining at Cayo Coco Rum Bar & Restaurant. It was our first time in and to our surprise we were waited on by one of the partners in the business, Josh. He was very pleasant, knowledgeable, and took the time to tell a detailed back story on a particular rum we asked about. Did I mention the food? I had the crab fried rice and my boyfriend had the jerk chicken, both were phenomenal! Your taste buds will thank you for stopping in and trying a dish. We will definitely be back! Thanks again Josh!
The food and service was top tier, per usual! On this night, we enjoyed the ceviche as a starter (full of flavor & a beautiful sight). For drinks we had mojitos, a raspberry lemon drop, and a blueberry lemon drop. For dinner we both had the ribeye that was covered in a red wine sauce that was to die for!!! We love Cayo Coco, and you all never disappoint!
Listen, if you’re ever in Birmingham and don’t pull up to Cayo Coco Rum Bar, you’re seriously missing out. I was in town for work and decided to skip the typical corporate gala scene for something more my speed—a solo dinner with good food and good vibes. Let me tell you, Cayo Coco is it. This place? It’s a whole experience. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance struck the perfect balance between laid-back charm and polished sophistication. The vibe was warm, authentic, and buzzing just enough to feel alive without being overwhelming. The thoughtfully curated menu was a feast for the senses—every dish more enticing than the last. Collectively, my meal here ranks as one of the best things I’ve ever eaten, showcasing a level of care and creativity that made each bite unforgettable. And then, there was Ashley, my amazing waitress. If I lived in Birmingham, I’d absolutely be friends with her. She was personable, warm, and fully engaged, turning what could have been just another solo meal into a vibrant and memorable evening. We swapped stories of travel, shared favorite bands, and geeked out over her top menu picks (she was spot on, by the way). Her service was the epitome of southern hospitality and truly elevated the experience. Cayo Coco is legendary in my book. It’s not just a restaurant; it’s a place that etches core memories. If you find yourself in Birmingham, whether alone or with friends, this is a spot you simply cannot miss. Top-tier food, incredible vibes, and a team that knows how to make every guest feel like family. Birmingham, you’ve outdone yourself with this one.
My husband I were pleasantly surprised to find this gem in Birmingham of all places! Their rum selection is unmatched, as were their mixology skills and creative food menu. Josh and Luke took great care of us, we tried several different cocktails and enjoyed the oxtail gnocchi and a Cuban. We will definitely return on our future visits to Birmingham! Thank you again for the great experience.
Went to Cayo Coco 9/23 for my fiancee's birthday. Food was stellar, the pork chop was a 10/10. Grouper was cooked to perfection, wish the sauce was a little richer. We received phenomenal service from our waitress and the two bartenders we interacted with. Will certainly be coming back, a real hidden gem of Birmingham.
I really enjoyed this place with my family. The decorations through out the building were nice and well thought out. It was not a loud sound carrying building that you couldn’t enjoy a conversation which is becoming a bigger and bigger thing for me. Maybe I’m getting old but yelling is no fun to me They cocktails were on spot for the kids that were almost 21 and The cocktails for the rest were on point and tasty. We did order several small plates to just give everything a sample and the fried okra was the best I’ve ever had! My filet was cooked medium rare and served on a bed of rice. My wife and daughter enjoyed the jerk chicken. My son devoured the Cubano sandwich. The chocolate desert was a great and the peach bread cornbread pudding was choice too. Last but not least was the service. They were all super friendly and very attentive. I will absolutely be back when I’m in town again.
Took my wife here for her birthday. The food was surprising and delicious in all the right ways. The specialty drinks were fun and tasty. If you like to be adventurous and try new things, I highly recommend making Cayo Coco. It's easily one of the best bar and restaurant's that Birmingham has to offer!
We had a great experience with our impromptu work dinner with our party of 15. Our server Thomas P. was very accommodating and worked to help our large group have a wonderful time. The flavors of the food were bold and paired well with the amazing drink menu. We loved the daiquiris and the Will You Be My Hurricane drinks were our favorites. But please don’t miss the Guri Guri - so yummy! Located right in the heart of downtown in a walkable area from neighboring hotels. Highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
We showed up on a Friday night at 7 without a reservation but were seated immediately at a table all by itself, a little removed from the main dining areas. We loved it! We ordered cocktails and they were great. Star, our outstanding server gave us excellent advice and was quick and personable. The meal itself was amazing. The ceviche with house-made plantain chips should not be missed. The cocktails we tried were creative and really hit the mark. Excellent across the board. We will return, and soon. Update 12/22/23: Cayo Coco was our last stop for an early dinner following an afternoon of fun downtown. We had a light dinner with empanadas, ceviche and delicious cocktails. Once again, the experience was outstanding. Food, drinks & service were all very good and they happily squeezed us in without a reservation, then never mentioned it again as we enjoyed our meal in relaxed fashion. If you have not tried Cayo Coco, you're missing a unique spot with top-notch everything.
Today I went to Cayo coco for the first time, as I’m currently working in the Birmingham area. A friend recommended it to me and spoke very highly of it. When I arrived, I really liked the atmosphere it had a nice Caribbean vibe and the decor was on point. I sat at the bar and ordered a guava daiquiri, which was quite good. The service at the bar was excellent, especially from Luke, the bartender he was very friendly and welcoming. I ordered two dishes: the snapper ceviche and some tostones. I felt the ceviche needed a bit more salt and flavor overall. The tostones, however, were tasty and came with a melted cheese dip that I found pretty interesting. Later, I had a passion fruit daiquiri, which I absolutely loved. Overall, I had a great time. I think the food could improve a bit, but the place has a great vibe, the drinks are excellent, and the overall energy is very enjoyable.
I will say the drinks are great if you love rum which I do! They were delicious. Especially the Pina Colada whish isnt my normal go to. However, the food lacked flavor for the prices to be what they were. Overall, the vibe was nice. Our favorite was the empanadas. A great place for appetizers and drinks to start the evening off.
If the food was better this place would be PHENOMENAL! However the lack of flavor and poorly prepared dishes won’t have me returning for the food. To start we had a pain killer and another fruity drink. The pain killer was delicious I loved the addition of the house made banana foam! It really set the drink apart from other pain killers I’ve had. Definitely recommend. Next for appetizers we had the empanadas which tasted like chili? Wasn’t good. In addition I ordered the chicken soup which was way too salty for my taste. For entrees I had the pork chop. Now presentation wise it looked great. However it was way overcooked dry and had no flavor to it. I was so disappointed I love a good pork chop. And the risotto it came with?? Risotto is supposed to be creamy rich and smooth this tasted like dry grits with no flavor. My partner got the jerk chicken and I won’t even go there. Just don’t order it. But yeah come for drinks and convo but not the food. Ohhhhh and the zombie drink that’s a must that drink catches up to you omg lol
