I LOVE cafe colonial! The service is always great and the food is sooo good. I had the crab mofongo and it was delicious 😋 the quesadilla was good too but if you visit you better try any mofongo, all of them are cooked to perfection! The drinks are also amazing try the Dominican kiss (lots of alcohol) or the mojitos (passion fruit is the BEST).

OMG I didn't expect the food to be so good a cab driver recommend it to me an my husband and it was awesome full of flavor and fulfillment. Im definitely going back to try more of there menu.❤❤❤❤❤🍛🍹🎖

This place was way too loud for a Sunday. Kids screaming for no reason and their parents were letting them. Servers need a bit more patience and hospitality. They always looked stressed, rushed and over worked. Food is excellent but the place could use some improvement.

I went to celebrate my beautiful Mom birthday and my sister's daughter, nephew, and nieces. The decorations of the location were beautiful. The waitress took care of us quickly, despite we were a party of 10. The food was good, couldn't complain. Will definitely recommend this location to others.

Food&drink was delicious, the ambient was really nice, this is the first Latin Cuisine restaurant that i go to and has candles on the tables, clean and neat tables. El Viejo has established a really wonderful restaurant. Not only is the food amazing and the staff spectacular; but he has captured a quintessential piece of NYC with this restaurant. Sitting here eating dinner, sharing a nice bottle of wine, watching the train roll by as the sun sets; you really feel like you could be in a movie scene. A definite must when visiting NYC.

The food was great. I asked for multiple trays of bread which was super delicious. The service was slow maybe because we ate on Christmas night with a big party. When the food arrived it was super hot and fresh. The desserts were yummy and sweet. I recommend the lava cake and tres leches. Food is banging tbh. It does take long to arrive most of the time, but it’s because it’s made fresh. The service can be a bit slow and the atmosphere an be updated but the point is to reflect a traditional island restaurant that emphasizes homemade seafood dishes which is what I recommend.

I only get chicken soup take out. It is delicious, freshly made. Good pieces of chicken. My only complaint is the vegetable inconsistency. Best version has potatoes carrots yucca. But too often no potatoes or yucca. Hope they can fix that.

Nice place to get drinks and watch the games. They have a variety of foods . They also brought my friend a flan with a sparkling candle in it and sung happy birthday over the speaker system. Very good time there.

Update 2022 They really improved things. The Caribbean chicken is still good but they're using smaller pieces then they used to. The rice with pigeon peas is excellent. Service is a lot better. The beef stew is soft now but it doesn't have a lot of vinegar like carribean food usually does. update 9/2019 My last 3 delivery experiences were terrible. I received plaintain raw still part pink inside, i eat green Banana (guinero) often this times it seems like it was slow cool boiled not water. I requested garlic for the tostones when I recieved my delivery I was told I had to pay $1 for that. Why not just charge it as a side. Plus I only needed 1 which would have been .50 cents. the meat was excellent. I think the issue is on Sundays Mexican workers may mot be familiar with caribbean cuisine. Its an issue in a lot of Dominican places in the Bronx, Sunday food is not as good. There is a smart mouth Dominican guy every time I speak with him I know there is going to be a problem. I called to check of my order was received he could have just told me to come down with an extra dollar. I locked myself out accidentally to get the food they never ring a bell no matter how much the tip or how many parking spaces. the tostones were replaced with more raw and oily soggy plantain. Nicer atmosphere than many for dinner to sit in. But like most food is a a little inconsistent. Today my half roasted chicken is usually dry. Today it was not. My experience is to avoid the beef guisado... dry. I often get the caribbean chicken. Its usually the safest consistency. Better than Steven's (sorry). UPDATE: 11/13/18 I appreciate the owner response. I look forward to going there more and trying more food. I had stopped going there for like a year. So maybe everything not just the chicken has improved. I look forward to changing this review in the near future...now that I have had 2 great dishes recently.

Great food. Service is not that great. I order here all the time. I ordered a lunch special of yellow rice and chicken chunks. The rice usually dry so I asked for gravy to be added. I noticed there were potatoes and carrots already in the beef stew but I didn’t want the beef as I already ordered chicken. I asked if a few carrots and potatoes could be placed on the side. I even offered to pay whatever extra needed. I was told “what you ordered doesn’t come with that”. I can’t tell someone how to run their business but if I’m offering to pay extra for something that’s already made but not technically on the menu, not sure why it couldn’t be added.

The food was good. The waitress needs training on dealing with the public. We sat down, never asked if we wanted anything to drink. Ask for our food order and walk away. Food came out in a reasonable time frame, we had to ask for drinks. One of the things I didn’t care for is that they include the tip and if you don’t look at the bill properly you will tip them twice, they don’t tell you this. Tips should be according to the service not obligated if you’re not happy with the service. This is why they don’t go out of the way because they know their tip is already included.Also, if you pay by card they add another 3.99% to your card. Won’t be patronizing this cafe again.

The space is beautiful, the food was great but the service really brought it down for us. Our waiter forgot a lot of our items that we had to keep reminding him of. I watched him fully forget our sides and drinks until I reminded him and he went to go order it at the bar/ He even forgot an extra side dish but still included it on the bill so I had to request it taken off. Then in the end we gave him our card for the check and he just disappeared forever and we had to ask for a completely different waitress to bring our card back. All in all, I would recommend this place for the food and vibes but maybe they should look into some training for their server.

Used to be a staple of the neighborhood. Food is great. But the service is inconsistent. Lot of nice waitresses but there’s a gentleman who waits as if he has a gun to the back of his head forcing him to work. He abandoned us to the point we had to have raise our hands like schoolchildren for service. A different server and the manager came to take our drink orders. When he does come over he says “what happened? What do you want?” Unbelievably rude service from that guy. When my father paid for the bill instead of politely presenting the checkbook, he slapped it against my father’s back. I asked him if he thought that was appropriate and professional he had nothing to say. Another failure from local restaurants that keeps chains in business.

Me and my husband went there on a Saturday afternoon, it wasn’t so busy. However we waited a long time for our drinks and our food. I ordered the skirt steak wrap. He ordered the Dominican burger. The serving size was huge. I couldn’t finish. When I got home. I wanted to add a little bit more cheese to my wrap before I stuck in the airfryer and I got completely turned off when I see a sticker still on the bell pepper inside my wrap. That was just straight up careless in the kitchen. Unacceptable. Oh and check your receipts. Tip is automatically included. Idky we have to for service that wasn’t even that great.

Cafe colonial is convenient but the service and accountability of their mistake is a 1. Delivery service should NOT take 1 hr when it’s a couple of blocks. Every time they make a mistake they never want to take accountability. Since their food is decent and the restaurant is well adorned they lack in other parts.

Update: I decided it was mean to give them only 2 stars given the food itself was worth 5 stars based on balance of price and how much we got (look at that paella so much seafood) So 3 stars and let’s just say I would return despite the service.. The service was soooooo slow. The food took forever to come. All the comments about service are valid although not necessarily our waitress’ fault. Doesn’t seem like they hired enough staff, could be the same going on in the kitchen too. The problem was we finished several beers and mojitos before the food came, we were already too hungry and had a buzz from the alcohol, just too desperate to enjoy the food properly. We ordered appetizers too, took forever just like main course. Ah speaking of the actual food, they were good. We had seafood paella and steaks, all good. But the whole experience was so subpar. I guess I could have given 3 stars given the food, but really hope they improve.

The food is decent and the service is ok. A Major problem I have with this place is that not only are they wayyyyy over priced, they have a sneaky way of charging you extra. No matter the amount of people having a meal, they charge Gratuity fees but they sometimes avoid giving you the receipt that reflects the amount. If you’re not aware, you’re also paying a tip on top of the grutuity bill. If you order a delivery from them, you end up paying more fees than what the meal cost. I once ordered a 17 dollar meal, by the end of the ordering process the meal would have cost me 51 dollars. I no longer patronize their establishment.

It was a short visit at this restaurant. We sat down and decided on what to order. The waitress came and put the bread basket down. Not even a minute later a roach came out of the bread basket and walked across the table. We didn't even place an order just got up and walked out. The waitress didn't even seem surprised so this must be common in this place.

I only get take out from here but dining in seems like it would be nice. The place is nicely decorated and newly renovated. The food is great every time. The staff could be friendlier but they're not really a problem. It tends to get busy and they are open past 9pm which is a benefit. Update : ate from here yesterday and have been violently sick since 5am. I don't believe their standards are what they used to be. I am as honest as I can be in all reviews and I'm just about ready to call a food inspector in on them.

Their customer service is horrible. I went to get breakfast this morning, and there was a guy who had already placed his order and was waiting for it. I was next in line, while a lady was getting something for the people dining in, and another person had just come in and was looking for something. Neither of them acknowledged me or said, “Give me a minute so I can take your order.” I waited for a few minutes, but since no one seemed to care about serving me, I decided to go to another place that values its customers. 😤😡🤬

I Came into be seated. No one at the counters. Flagged down a guy and asked if I could sit. he said ok go find a seat. So then I Waited 15 mins to be attended by a waiter. A waiter finally came, asked me what I wanted, - he didn't bring a water. I ordered a drink. Then Waited another 15 mins to get a drink and a water. When he came back I Ordered a fried veggie rice and the main part of the meal supposed to be made of avocado according to their menu . They serve me the plate . There’s No avocado. My rice gets cold cause I wait 10 mins to stop the waiter and he says sorry he doesn't know the menu. I'm like your menu shows this is avocado dish can you please bring the avocado. He goes to the kitchen and comes back, says there are none right now. Ummm …., so why would you let me order a dish you don’t have , then bring me a different dish if you didn't have the stuff to make the meal? Waitress 101 You should've told me you didn't have the item and inform me to order something else. So now I'm stuck with basically rice and corn and peas. Terrible experience. I was gonna just eat and I Was gonna get more drinks but no one ever came to my table after I finished my drink. So I clearly I have to wait 15 minutes every time I need something. I ended up not eating any of the plate and they still tried to charge me for it. The resturant was VERY SLOW too, there only one other table. Not sure why I'm waiting 10-15 minutes every single time to get help. Now im waiting another 10 minutes to get my card back because I'm supposed to pay for this ridiculous service and meal, never coming back here, no thanks!!!

$30 for a rice and chicken dinner, rice tasted burnt like the bottom of the pan. I remember now why I stopped coming here. Horrible food for a jacked up price

I have ordered several times with no issues. Today, I placed an order at 11:15 am. It was scheduled to arrive at 12:10 pm. When it hadn't arrived by 12:30, I called to check on the delivery. I was told that I scheduled it for pickup (I didn't - I even received a text confirming that my order would be DELIVERED by 12:10). The girl I spoke to took a few minutes and got back on the phone. She told me to give her 10 - 15 minutes for the order to arrive. When I still hadn't received the order 45 minutes later, I called back and I was told that the order wasn't there and they were going to call the driver. They then hung up on me. I called and was hung upon two more times and finally told them to cancel the order and refund my money. They didn't want to cancel the order and gave me a few different excuses and then told me that there was no manager there and I would have to call back or come in after 4:30. I told them that I wanted to speak to the person that is in charge right now. They then sent the food anyway. I did not accept the order and explained to the delivery person that I needed a telephone call from the manager of the restaurant. I have not received any telephone call.

Not a very inviting place. The waitress we had was absolutely terrible. We had to continue to ask for bread to be given to keep us on hold till the food arrived. She completely disappeared the whole time after we received our main entrees, which was all that we ordered! Never refilled our waters or checked up on us. Will definitely not come back here. Although the food was decent the service was atrocious.

Food is cold waitress had an attitude. Was not busy a food took over an hour to arrive for two people. When confronting staff, waitress said it was not that late and it wasn’t her fault

Customer service is great, yet the food is simply mediocre, looks nice for pics but definitely room for alot of improvements in flavor town, starting with the watered down marinera sauce they pair up with their calamari JUST SIMPLY DISCUSTING !! The "mofonguito de cangrejo" i appreciate them using real crab meat which is a plus ... but the sauce it swims in lacked "Je ne sais quoi".. but far from a creole sauce..If you go here make sure to take company as the food may taste better after a few drinks and good conversation 🥴 🤣

Celebrated my sisters 60th birthday 🎂 and everything that was on the menu they didnt have a kept coming back to us asking to get something else very disappointing. The only good thing from there was our waitress who tried to make the best of our evening.

Lately the food has NOT been tasty. I ordered a simple meal of yellow rice beans chicken chunks. The rice taste horrible as if sitting all day and scraped the crunch part which is disgusting and the potato salad is stale/old. For $50 at least provide food that is edible od decent enough to eat. Highly disappointed hence why I no longer purchase food from them.

I ordered online for pickup. We spent almost $90 on our order. Very disappointed when I opened the container of beans to find maggots inside. Never will be coming here again.

Pay for full pork chops get pork chops missing a 3rd. I don't know if someone figured this was a great idea for extra revenue. But it just left me with a feeling of being taken advantage of, to say it nicely. Question why would anyone think this is ok to do? This tells me that the manager is just constantly thinking of way to take advantage of its patrons. I had stop coming to the Colonial because the staff was constantly getting the order wrong and them try to pass it as my fault. Decide to come back a few months back. Because the food is decent. Compared to was out there. But this is the 4 issue I had since I started buying food here again. Feeling like some just robbed me. It's not the experience I'm looking for when I ordered food from a restaurant. Congratulations Colonial Restaurant you lost me as a customer!

June 8, 2022, 11months ago I was there. Today I was there and the food was great and the service by Erica was great. What I found out very disturbing was that the 18% tip was included in the bill. The first bill given was the total for the food. I left cash tip of $23.00 for server who did an excellent job. I just called a few minutes when I got home and was told can't reverse tip but can give me the cash back. As a business owner it doesn't make sense. I will not be going back to restaurant. When they give you receipt they give you total but don't give you receipt back of what you spent unless you ask for it. I assumed when I requested receipt it would be ok but when I got in my car I noticed the 18% added. That means it is 36% tip. That is why I am given a 1 because of how sneaky they were. All customers much check price before leaving a tip and request original receipt. The food was good and the service as well. A little pricey for the food but can't complain when our server made sure we were enjoying our meal.
