Didn't know how popular this place was but found out very quickly. Got a lucky open reservation that opened up and was sat down by 8pm. When I say this burger ranks up there with the best in NYC, not hyperbole. Got to try it yourself. Otherwise everything else we got, the wedge with thick bacon, the squid ink pasta, and the mussels were amazing. Will definitely come back. A+
The Red Hook Tavern burger has similar hype to LeBron James coming out of high school. It's #1 on nearly everyone's best burger in New York list. So naturally I was skeptical. Can one meat frisbee really be that much better than all the other ones? I walked 24 minutes from the nearest train stop and arrived 12:30 on a Thursday with my big homie, and we got a seat at a tiny bar stool in the corner. The ambiance feels like a cozy cabin that belongs somewhere in the mountains. We ordered oysters ($24) and 2 burgers ($32 each) that came with fries. Huge. We were filled with anticipation, as we had just hit Minetta Tavern for their famous Black Label Burger the day before, and questioned if this one would really be that much better. When this burger came... I mean talk about passing the eye test. It doesn't rely on gimmicks or a fancy build, the beauty is rooted in its simplicity: A dry aged beef patty topped by melted golden cheese that softly drapes down over a dark seared crust, contained by a glistening toasted sesame bun that's sturdy, but not overwhelming. It looks the way the human memory wants a burger to look. No excess, no flash, just BUCKETS. The meat frisbee weighed in at a hefty 12.3oz, which is 1.3oz above the median NYC burger thus far. The cottage-style fries came in at 5.1 oz. The crazy thing is, it tasted better than it looked. The thick dry-aged beef patty was seasoned well and griddled perfectly to where it had a rich crust while maintaining a juicy interior. The cheese and onion balanced the richness of the beef, while still letting it speak and be the star. I was sitting there pondering if I had ever even really had a burger before. It's a generational talent. It had so much motion that I think it might have broken the Richter scale and given the ring camera a "motion overload" error. I had to pop a dramamine right after. I'm hesitant to give a 10, as I've never given a 10 for anything, but this is a 10. It's the best burger I've ever had, it's my 2018 LeBron, my 2011 Tom Brady, my 1991 Julia Roberts. Fries were also a respectable 8/10. This vs all other burgers was a clear "there's levels to this..." performance. I'm talking Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin in 2009 kind of levels. I had it almost a week ago, and I'm still thinking about it. It changed me. IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo
Really worth it! Great burger of course, but not only! Pasta and croquettes were amazing. Friendly staff and great atmosphere. I’ll be back!
We got a reservation for a Friday night and were seated right when we arrived. The place was very busy. We ordered the burgers, the prawns, and onion soup. The prawns were my favorite!
They deserve their reputation of serving one of the best burgers money can buy. Simply done, generous burger of top quality. I got here about 15 mins before they opened on a Sunday and got in around 20 mins and was seated. Good service too. Highly recommend this place. Not much else around this area and not near a subway station but worth walking the extra mile if you’re in town. Check it out.
There are very few moments when I can say that a dish has changed my life but I can confidently say the burger at Red Hook Tavern has changed mine. I, like many of us, have heard that their burger is one of the best in NYC. It's just how you'd imagine it - picturesque and perfect. It's a thick, bulbous dry-aged patty enveloped with melty american cheese between two wonderfully grilled-to-crisp sesame buns which stood up to the juicy patty beautifully. There was ONE obstacle keeping me from eagerly rolling up my sleeves though and that was the only other element of this burger: the RAW ONION. I'm not someone who enjoys raw onions at all. To me, it overpowers anything I eat it with. I am happy to have them pickled or stir-fried in a dish but raw, no thank you. I requested that the onion be grilled to which they politely replied, "Your only option is to remove the onion but trust me... it works." And so I held my breath as I agreed to keep the onions in the burger. I respect the creative decision to make the burger the way it is and I wanted to enjoy it just as it was intended. GAME-CHANGER. I felt like I was having onions for the first time in my life. The onions caught the fatty juices in a maze of its rings and was just the right fresh, sweet, and crunchy bite to cut the rich meatiness. I finally understood the purpose AND the magic of this humble ingredient. And now, I eat raw onions like an apple. HAHA just kidding. But truly, because of this moment, I can now say I love to eat onions, enjoy them and appreciate them for how it compliments so many dishes. My entire eating experience has changed. What made this evening even greater is that I was able to snag a bar seat (which is my preference anyway) without a reservation. Their parlor-style wood bar is cozy, their bartenders are friendly, and their cocktails are stellar. WEDGE SALAD - it's perfect. Long slices of crispy lettuce thoughtfully layered throughout and topped with a great blue cheese dressing and a generous slice of bacon. Fresh dill was a nice touch! Turns out, I like eating my salad with a knife. FRENCH ONION SOUP - it's decadent and savory with the ideal ratio of soup to bread & cheese. It's baked in the soup bowl and comes out steamy and dreamy. My favorite part is the cheese that gets broiled and brown. DRY-AGED BURGER - what more can I say? Except there is more and that is that the fries are also so fun (in the shape of medallions) and the pickle is tasty. SMOKED PORK CHOP - cooked to perfection. So tender. Love the charred cabbage it's served with. This has become one of my favorite places for a casual lunch or a celebratory dinner. Everything was so good I forgot about how overly sweet the sauce on the pork chop was. Will most definitely visit again!
When the normally dead-serious immigration officer at JFK airport asks you if you like burgers and recommends this tavern, there must be something about that place... And yes - the burger was awesome (pretty simple without fancy toppings, but seasoned and grilled to perfection) and the carbonara was marvellous, too. If you don't want to be in Manhattan all the time, come over to red hook (the ferry stops nearby) and enjoy the tavern.
The burger was a moist thick patty so for those who are secretly anti-smash come here. I suggest sitting outside where the environment is calmer. Inside is warm but a bit too cramped compared to the lovely crisp air. Also highly recommend the romaine wedge. It's a full romaine heart layered with a great dressing and crumbs. The French onion soup was deep and hearty, for those who want a light meal consider just the soup and an appetizer. The waitstaff were excellent and the tavern captures the vibe of the local community. Highly recommend.
Great joint. Their burger is delicious, cooked rare as requested, and ranks high in my personal list of all time great burgers globally. Note to self: I should have avoided the unnecessary shrimp cocktail, that was bland at best (and probably recently defrosted) The young team running the show is dynamic and friendly, not to mention very efficient, and the vibe is neighbourhood-ish. I was there 30 minutes before their lunch opening and joined a small queue which grew much bigger by the time they flung the doors opened. Reservation is therefore highly recommended.
I don’t think I’ve heard of a restaurant in NYC with more mixed opinions than Red Hook Tavern but all I have to say is that this is a delicious meal and completely worth the hype. Some people say it’s influencer driven fame but the burger is the most delicious thing I’ve had in a long time, definitely in my top favorites. I’m wondering is consistency is an issue with all the mixed reactions but I guess I’ll have to go back again which I’m planning on. Also, the French onion soup, mind boggling on how good it is. This place lives up to the hype and gets my stamp of approval, I’d highly recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a good burger spot.
We had a great experience at Red Hook Tavern! We tried the famous burger and it was incredible. You can really taste the meat and it’s perfectly seasoned. The fries were amazing too, with a really nice cut that you don’t see often. If you’re coming from Manhattan, take the ferry to Red Hook. The trip itself is super fun and the views are a great bonus. Totally worth it!
This place is no joke. I drove in from Westchester for a 630pm reservation. Finally, hit the push notification on resy in time. Sat at the bar, which is the best spot in my opinion. Started with a dozen oysters, just amazing, the served it with hot sauce, onion sauce and some orange slush, the onion was my favorite of the three sauces. Went to the kale salad next, I could of ate another, very fresh ingredients, then moved on to an absolute mouth watering burger, served on a light brioche role, to die for. I had to top everything off with some rainbow cookies, 4 to an order, I split them, could of ate eight my self. They are from Hafley Baked in BK, so I’ll have to stop by there one day and get an LB.
Red Hook Tavern feels like one of those neighborhood spots that’s been there forever. It’s warm and a little dim, with candles on the tables. Simple and comfortable. We had a reservation, so we didn’t have to wait, but outdoor seating looked nice too, and the wait seemed around 30 minutes on a Tuesday night. The burger was the reason we came, and it really was great. It’s dry-aged, so the flavor is strong and a little different, in a good way, but definitely something to know before you order. The potato chips were thick and fresh, the cheese was melted perfectly, and the pickle was honestly one of my favorite parts. I never thought I’d say that about a pickle, but it was that good. It’s not a cheap meal, and you can tell part of what you’re paying for is the place’s reputation. The food’s solid, the space feels genuine, and the whole experience just fits together nicely.
JAMES IS THE GOAT 🐐 Red Hook Tavern in Brooklyn deserves every one of these five stars. From start to finish, the night was special. Even though we were seated outside, the weather was perfect for people-watching and added an extra layer to the experience. Right off the bat I have to shout out James! He absolutely made the night. He walked us through every dish with confidence, knew the menu inside and out, and his genuine hospitality elevated everything. I’d come back just to hang at the bar with him next time. The oysters we had as appetizers were fresh and clean. The mignonette sauce paired beautifully, enhancing their brininess without overpowering them. And that bacon was FIRE!!!!! 🔥 Crispy, smoky, well-seasoned — a standout side that had me eyeing seconds. The burger lived up to the hype. Juicy, well-balanced, cooked just right, with flavors that landed. But the true stars were the chicken and pork dishes. The chicken was pan-roasted, tender inside with a golden crisp outside, and served over mashed Yukon golds with a rich gravy that tied it all together. The pork chop was smoked, charred properly, with deep flavor, served alongside grits and a cherry pepper agrodolce that cut through the richness perfectly. We ended the night with rainbow cookies, which were phenomenal — light, flavorful, and a perfect sweet finish. If you’re looking for a spot that nails food, drinks, ambiance, and standout service, Red Hook Tavern is it. And tell James we sent ya!!
Indeed a hidden gem in the lovely Red Hook area. Must make reservations because otherwise your not guaranteed a seat that day... we had an hour wait then another 30 minutes for them to make and prepare the roasted chicken but my God was it worth the wait. Service Is fast and served hot very fresh just look at the photos the dry aged 31 days crazy burger speaks for itself its an absolute show stopper. Also please do not forget to order a fresh dark mcsorelys ale yummmm
Rating: 9/10 Date Last Visited: 9/6/2025 We ordered the Dry-Aged Red Hook Tavern Burger ($32), Fish and Chips ($28), French Onion Soup ($18), and a side of bacon (+$8). The burger was absolutely amazing, and it was definitely one of the best burgers I’ve had. The meat is super juicy and cooked perfectly while the bun is the perfect vehicle for the meat. For how simple the burger is - bun, patty, cheese, pickles - they do an amazing job elevating the taste to the next level. For over $30, it’s a bit pricey but well worth trying at least once. The fish and chips were good too, but pretty expensive for the portion sizes. I would not get the french onion soup again - it was decent but again, too expensive. And skip the bacon too, 100% not worth $8. I would come back again, but only get the burger. The service was great, and the restaurant itself had a nice cozy vibe to it. Overall, I would recommend this place to anyone who loves burgers, it’s worth coming out and trying this place at least once in your life.
Got a last minute reservation from a friend who couldn’t go anymore and I’m so glad! We sat at the bar and it wasn’t extremely comfortable but it wasn’t bad at all. The bartender/our waiter was extremely kind and took care of us even when he was super busy, like talking to us, asking us about what the food, he was very sweet. The food was amazing!! I love oysters and those were great quality and they added some cool toppings for them. The prawns were 10/10, definitely get them if you go like don’t skip them. The main star of the show is the burger of course and it was really good!! The beef was amazing and you can just taste how amazing the quality is. I feel like in a world of smash burgers, it’s nice to have a burger like this. We also got this ricotta sweet corn pasta dish and ehhh not my favorite, pretty forgettable. Lastly, desert was good and perfect to end the meal. Oh yeah, cocktails were amazing too!!
This place is a traditional tavern atmosphere but the burger lived up to the hype. Went with a group of friends all local to the city hunting the best burgers and this ranked in everyone's top 1-2 across the board. Juicy burger despite it being thick, cheese complemented well and was appropriate ratio to the burger. The bun was nicely toasted and added to the overall flavor without being an afterthought. We also had the shrimp cocktail and ham croquettes Everything we tried was great and we would get them again, but the burger was noteworthy. Shrimp was perfectly cooked resulting in a juicier shrimp that was perfectly seasoned. Ham croquettes are lightly fried and salty from the meat and cheese but not greasy at all. Complementary sparkling water was icing on the cake.
Came on a Monday without a reservation at 5pm and sat at the bar. Ordered the Dukes martini, croquettes, wedge salad, oxtail cavatelli and the burger. The place filled up after about 20 mins. Wedge salad was delicious and large! The sauce on the croquettes was delectable. The burger was buttery and big. Brought the cavatelli home as I was stuffed (the sauce was lovely, a hint of sweetness). They were playing 60s and 70s tunes 🥳
Overall: Definitely lives up to the hype! The good: One of the better burgers I've ever had, right up there with some of the best. The vibes are great, regardless of whether you're sitting inside or out (though inside is definitely more cozy). Great drink menu and the fries really hit the spot. Service was friendly and attentive throughout the meal. The not-so-good: The french onion soup was fine, I'll try something else if I go back again. I've heard the wait here can get crazy, but we were able to walk right in on a Wed evening. Food/drink: 8/10 Atmosphere: 8/10 Service: 8/10
Pretentious hostess. We came as a party of four but got split into two pairs at the bar. When two seats opened up next to us, we asked to move our other two friends over, but the waitress refused and said they don’t allow parties of four at the bar. Seems like the hype has gotten to their heads where they can’t make little service tweaks to make it a better experience for the guests. Burger was good. 8/10. Almost a steak like quality to the burger. It would’ve been better with caramelized onions. Fries and pickle were mid. Again, solid burger but don’t understand how this is ranked as top 2 in NYC.
