Food was amazing! The egg salad was easily the best I've ever had, also got the chicken katsu which was a 10/10. I really could not say enough good things about this place. My only little tiny issue was the music on the back patio was a bit loud, and the seating was strange (chairs were way too low to the ground). Highly recommend you check this place out and get the yuzu ginger ale!
Finally got to try the katsu sando on my off day today and thoroughly enjoyed it. Loved the outdoor area on a beautiful day like today and all the employees were warm and hospitable. Only thing that didn’t meet expectations was the togo order I made. Half of the fries were uncooked. It had the texture of baked potatoes and was oily so had to throw it out.
Taku Sando serves an amazing selection of Japanese-style sandwiches, including katsu sando (fried pork sandwich) and korokke sando (croquette sandwich), the two most popular sandwiches in Japan. They also have tamago sando (egg sandwich) for vegetarians/vegans. The bread is baked in-house and is also used to make panko (bread crumbs) for fried ingredients. If you like Japanese-style bread (soft with a hint of milk and sweetness), you will definitely love this place. We found this place almost by accident and we felt really lucky to have such a great lunch unexpectedly.
Wow I am SO happy to have gotten the chance to finally try Taku Sando. I went this evening on a Saturday around 6:45pm and no line and pretty empty which was a plus! The woman taking our orders was super sweet as well. All three of us got the Chicken Katsu (so I can only speak for that one) but it was SOOOO good I thought I’d be stuffed and uncomf from eating the whole thing but I was nibbling at my friends left overs after because it was that good. The only note I would say is that I wished the bread was maybe toasted or something just because it gets a little squishy/soggy with the dense sandwich but overall an incredible dinner and I will absolutely be back again maybe for lunch to try one of the egg salad sandwiches! Also I think the price is absolutely reasonable… it was $17 ish 😊
If you want a sando this is the spot to go! Got the Fish Katsu & it was the best sando sandwich outside of Japan. Honestly though places that get big of social media are usually good for a reason but the type of customers can be oblivious of where to wait for their food & not be conscious of other people, just FYI.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This Japanese sandwich shop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, completely exceeded my expectations. Honestly, it was even better than the famous katsu sandwiches I’ve had in Japan — I was truly impressed! Everything is made fresh. I ordered the tonkatsu sandwich, and while it was $16, it was huge and very satisfying. The thick, juicy cutlet with plenty of shredded cabbage inside soft bread was absolutely delicious. I also tried the yuzu soda and furikake fries, which were freshly fried, crispy, and super tasty. I’ll definitely be coming back and can’t wait to try other items on the menu. You don’t even need to go to Japan — this place is that good. Highly recommended!
Came here on a Saturday evening. This place was still bustling and hustling so you know they're good! We each got a tonkatsu sando and waited 20 minutes or so. It was a chunky sandwich. The price for me is reasonable considering the amount of meat you get and everything is freshly made. Unfortunately, we had a train to catch so we couldn't enjoy it right away. Managed to get 1 bite in and the tonkstsu was so crispy and tender. Sauce was just the right amount. It was still good 2 hours later and even the next day! Just put it in the air fryer or toaster oven. The bread was amazing. So soft and fluffy, don't know how it managed to hold all that meat, sauce and slaw?! This is not your local, fast food drive-through. If you can't wait more than 10 minutes for good, quality food, then maybe order ahead or go to a McD's. Obviously if you walk-in, it will take more time vs pre-ordering. Also, Do is not checking prices before you a buy the new thing?? $15 for a (gourmet or artisanal) sandwich is not shocking or surprising. In this economy, it's normal, and a matter of fact, it's actually cheap considering the value. Shake Shack is half the size yet similar in price, yet meat to bun ratio is 1:4 (mostly bread, thin layer of meat). Even if you made this yourself, ingredients will cost more than that price! The same people complaining about the prices, have no qualms eating at an Asian fusion restaurant, paying more than double for bite size pieces of the same food! They have a variety of drinks, alcohol and non-. Also, they sell novelty items like a bread light/ lamp, ceramic trinket that looked like a chopstick rest. Definitely try this eatery if you're hungry and in the area!
I cannot resist a good shokupan moment, and Taku Sando is THE SPOT to secure a fresh loaf of shokupan for only $12. I highly recommend getting both the pork katsu and egg sandos to share. The hot and cold combo works perfectly together. The refreshing egg salad also balanced out the richness of the deep-fried pork cutlet. I went around noon on a Saturday and while there was a line, it moved quickly so don’t be scared away. The back garden seating was cute with a fun camping theme. *Ton Katsu Sando $16 The sando was HUGE and LOADED, stuffed with three pieces of pork katsu, drizzled with a sweet and savory sauce, and sandwiched with some fresh shredded lettuce. It was a very filling choice. *Ajitama Tamago Sando $14 You can choose between a classic egg salad or one with a soft-boiled ramen egg (same price, so of course I went with the egg!). The shokupan really shone in this one. Fluffy, bouncy, and soft. *Shokupan $12 I grabbed a loaf to go, and it was still warm when they handed it to me. If I lived nearby, I’d buy this every week. I ate some fresh and saved the rest in the freezer. I made fruit sando and egg sando with it at home.
I've been wanting to try this place for awhile since seeing IG posts showing the yummy food. I was in the area and stopped by around noon, after it just opened, so the line was short. I wanted to order everything, but was by myself, so i only got the chicken katsu sando and it was so good! The fried chicken was crispy and the milk bread was so soft and fresh. It was a very large portion, for me anyways, and I was full after just eating half. I also wanted to try the tamago egg salad sandwich too, but will save that for next time when my gf is here. They have a nice outdoor patio to sit and eat, but i took it to go.
Best Non-Beef Katsu Sandos I’ve Had in the U.S. Came here on a Sunday afternoon to grab a couple of quick bites to take to the park nearby. It was around 4 p.m., so I didn’t expect much of a crowd, but my order still took almost half an hour (definitely worth placing it online in advance). I was expecting a small counter-service sandwich shop, but it turned out to be one of the biggest casual katsu spots I’ve seen. There’s a good amount of indoor seating and a surprisingly large patio in the back. But more importantly, this was the best pork and chicken katsu I’ve had in nearly a decade. When it comes to katsu, I usually prefer thick, leaner cuts cooked medium to medium-rare. But for a katsu sando, I think fattier cuts just make more sense. The natural flavors from the fat bring its own depth, so you don’t need that heavy pour of sweet tonkatsu sauce to keep things interesting. Here, the pork tonkatsu used a fattier pork loin, and the chicken version combined thigh and breast for a nice balance. Because of that, they went light on the sauce, and everything was still flavorful without relying too much on the sauce. It’s a small detail, but it made a big difference. The milk bread was pillowy soft, though I wish they had trimmed the crusts (super hard). They pressed the bread down just enough to make it thin and dense, which actually worked well. Easier to do multiple layers of katsu in one bite and keep the sauce sealed inside.
Delicious! Started with a tonkatsu sandwich and liked it enough that I went back later in the day for the ajitama sandwich. I think I may prefer the egg sandwich. The tonkatsu was really good - the meat was really well cooked; but I think I would have liked it more with less sauce. The sauce made the sandwich a bit too sweet for my liking. Regardless, both were great, and the bread was fragrant and soft. The lines are a bit long, so it's best to order online.

So good! Ordered the tonkastu, tamago, and chicken katsu sandos. Thought the pork would be my favorite but the chicken was banging. The other two were great too but couldn’t put down the chicken. The sandos are chilled, at least for takeout, which I got. Like Japan 7/11 style, but obviously higher quality. Wondering if they offer/will offer warm versions as well. Would love that! 10/10. Can’t wait to go again!
We went to their soft opening and ordered the tonkatsu sando and ribbon fries with dashi furikake. The portions of the sando was huge! The bread was fluffy, katsu crispy without tasting oily, and the sauces topped it off. Simply amazing. They also make their ribbon fries fresh and you cam see them do it in front of you. So so good! Can't wait to come back for more.
I’ve been here twice now.. as other mentioned, there were some kinks that had to be worked out. When I visited today, everything was smooth and efficient. The wine was great, orders came out quickly and correct. If you visited during the early days of opening, I’d encourage you to go back. They seem to have fixed all of the issues. The sandwich was delicious and it’s a fun upbeat place. I love this addition to Greenpoint !

I found this place from TikTok and I’m so happy I took the train out there! Amazing sandwich, I had the egg sando and my brother had the chicken and we both loved it. Service was also quick and nice, can’t wait to come back
BEST tonkatsu sando in NYC and unexpectedly unique and refreshing drinks! We got the pork tonkatsu and the egg salad sando and LOVED both. The tonkatsu was the standout. Super tender pork, sweet and savory sauce, and a mound of fresh cabbage- perfection! The bread is also amazing- super light and fluffy! Also make sure to try their Yuzu Ginger Ale! So refreshing and citrusy- it would be the PERFECT summer drink! The space is also very jazzy and lively. They get PACKED on the weekend but have additional seating in a cute camping-esque area in the back.

This is purely an exceptionally executed small menu featuring homemade milk bread with incredible ingredients in between. Sometimes the most simple things are the hardest to do and yet they got it exactly right. The bread is soft and pillowy, the tonkatsu was perfectly fried and seasoned, the bulldog sauce was layered on perfectly. The potato croquettes were light and well seasoned, the ribbon fries were amazing. My only complaint is there wasn’t anything spicier than sriracha ketchup to dip the fries in but that’s a me thing, not a taku sando thing. I can’t wait to go back and try the egg salad and the chicken sando.
Delicious katsu sandos and a wonderful addition to Greenpoint! The service was friendly and efficient even though they seemed super popular. We were lucky to come a bit earlier on a Sunday evening, but the line quickly grew behind us. We got the chicken katsu sando, the egg salad sando, the pork katsu sando, and the ribbon fries with furikake. Everything was delicious though the katsu sandos were the clear stars. The milk bread was also so soft and fluffy and the perfect complement to the katsu. I think the ribbon fries were just a bit too oily for me but overall no complaints. Would happily come back any day for another sando. There's a very cute backyard with seating but there's also a park nearby to enjoy your sandwiches in nice weather. They have a small amount of indoor seating as well.

Such an excellent addition to the neighborhood. The bread is soft and delicious. The pork and chicken are both moist, seasoned well and have the perfect amount of crisp from the breading. I would take into account your wait time and how badly you want this sandwich. The majority of your experience will be waiting.

Sooooooo good! The chicken katsu is so juicy and tender and the curry sauce gives so much flavor. The ton katsu sando was a bit dry but still delicious. Croquette sando was so chunky every bite was amazing. Egg sando was ok but others liked it more. Also they gave so so much ribbon fries mmmmmm. Chicken katsu > Croquette > ton katsu > egg sando This place really hit the spot 🤤! And the backyard was really nice, felt like we were almost camping.
This place is absolutely fire 🔥. Sandwiches are out of this world. Highly recommend the egg salad sandwich. I know it might sound basic, but it’s out of this world. Super light and fluffy. The bread is also homemade and to die for. If you’re in Greenpoint, highly recommend checking this spot out for lunch. They also have a big backyard space that is really nice, clean, well maintained and spacious.

Super yummy Japanese sandwiches. Of the three I tried, the fish and egg sandos are the best. The fish is moist and crispy on the outside. Perfectly balanced with the veggies. The egg sando is probably the best I’ve had. The prices are kind of crazy though $14-$18 for a small sandwich. There’s also a pretty long line so be prepared to wait. Would still recommend everyone try this place especially if you’ve never had a Japanese sandwich.

Taku Sando isn’t a big place, with about 20-30 seats including the outdoor area. I really liked the quality of the furniture and decoration there. (I’m not going to sponsor the brand, so you’ll have to visit and experience it for yourself.) The open kitchen reveals how they create fresh milky bread right from the oven. Honestly, the kitchen felt a bit small compared to the size of the store, but it was clean, nice, and tidy. If the ventilation is stronger that would be awesome. Oh, there was a call from the register—looks like our Sandos were ready. Yeah! One pork and one chicken Sando. My girlfriend and I agreed that the fried chicken was a bit tastier than the pork. The chicken was fresh, juicy, and tender. But the fresh homemade milky bread was the real star. It elevated the flavor to another level. Great job! However, the rainbow fries were unexpectedly amazing. I have no idea what kind of spice powder Taku Sando used—Nori? Shichimi? Sansho? Sea salt? —but it was very, very good. You can’t miss this if you come to Taku Sando. It's a must-have. The Yuzu drink was refreshing, but a little light. They probably intended it to balance the flavors of the meal. To conclude, Taku Sando is a great place to stop by while walking or shopping around the green point neighborhood on a sunny Sunday. The price is reasonable, the ingredients are fresh—what else could you ask for?
I’m so upset that it took me as long as it did to get here. We came in the snow storm after being starved from trudging around and everyone had the biggest smiles on their faces, thanking us for coming in. We got the Katsu and it was INCREDIBLE. Great balance of flavors, awesome milk bread, and the sando is MASSIVE so you’re not leaving hungry nor overpaying. They also play the best Japanese music — impossible not to be in a good mood while you’re there. My only tiiiiiny complaint is that because I’m shorter, the seats/tables aren’t terribly comfortable — I was leaning over heavily with how short the tables are. But that’s absolutely not stopping me from making this my new favorite sandwich spot! ♥️
Absolute best Japanese sandwich store in all of New York! They recently added Fish Sando as their one year anniversary menu, and the white fish is so fluffy as heaven! Their colorful camping themed interior is cute but I also like them to go in summer and spend evening in the park next to the East river.
Visited this place for the first time today, and it was wonderful. The atmosphere as soon as you walk in is super cozy and chill. The staff are incredibly friendly and nice and explain the dishes in detail. I ordered the Tamago and Ton Katsu sando, and they were both delicious. The Ton Katsu was crispy on the outside and super tender on the inside. The tamago ratio was perfect and tasted like the ones I've had in asia. The bread that is used is delicious and super soft and milky. This place is definitely a must try if you're near the area! It's worth it, in my opinion ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Taku Sando is great. I’ve been here twice now and every sandwich I’ve had has been delicious. I love that they make the bread in house, and if you come early you can actually see them prepping the dough. I was lucky enough to come when they had the wagyu sando available and it was 100% worth it the meat was so tender and flavorful. I also highly recommend the egg salad sando with the ramen egg. It’s classic, simple, and really hits the spot. The ton-katsu sando is another must-try.
Friendly and efficient service and well-priced and filling sandos. I got the pork katsu sando. It was okay - the bread, cabbage, and sauce are excellent. The ton-katsu was tough, so maybe get the chicken? There was some seating, but it was a little odd with your trays way lower than they should be.
The Fish Katsu Sando, which features a salt koji-marinated cod fillet and shokupan, was excellent. The texture of the fish was light and flaky, which made it my personal favorite. The Chicken Katsu Sando was also delicious and well-executed, but the fish version really stood out for its delicate texture and balance of flavors. The daily-baked, in-house shokupan truly elevates every bite—soft, slightly sweet, and the perfect complement to the crispy katsu.
Had to hop on the trend and check this place out. It’s super expensive which I didn’t like (each sando costing around $16-17) but was the food good? Yes. Really good. The chicken was sooo tender and juicy, just melted in my mouth when I took a bite. I do wish that the bread was slightly thicker, but other than that, great food! Staff is wonderful, the vibes inside were chill - there are lots of seating options in the back of the place. Watch out for the floors on snowy/rainy days as it tends to get super slippery!
I really enjoyed my meal and experience here. Everyone who worked there was extremely welcoming and friendly. The place is also immaculate, which is important to me. I ordered the Tonkatsu sandwich, the freshly fried potato chips with dashi furikake, and the yuzu iced tea. Everything was delicious, although one piece of pork in the sandwich was almost impossible to chew. I will try a different sandwich next time. All in all, a great experience.
I was craving for katsu sando and found the right place to have it. The bread was so fluffy and soft and pork katsu was so tender which went well with the sauce. I also ordered fries with furikake but it wasn’t cooked well :( It was so packed so I decided to order a takeout instead.
Pretty good, and major points for baking all their bread in house! I love Japanese sandos, and was excited to pass by this place. Stepping inside, the restaurant looks nice, with a great drink selection on display. It’s a busy place, so expect a bit of a wait between ordering and receiving your food. The food was fine - I noticed some inconsistencies in the temperature of food between our chicken and pork sandos. The pork quality could’ve been better, but the chicken was nice. I also appreciated how stuffed the sandwiches were. While I welcomed the creativity of the matcha creme in the fruit sando, it was only okay. As for all of them, I’d prefer a thicker cut slice of bread but the bread tasted great! It’s also good to note that It was definitely VERY pricey. My husband and I got two cutlet sandwiches, two mini cokes and a fruit bread which was $70+, the sticker shock was real. Pretty good! I wouldn’t frequent it, but I’d definitely go again.
One of the trendiest spots in the past NYC weekend was Taku Sando. Their backyard is in camping style with products from Snow Peak. Their package doesn’t look like traditional Sando shop but streetwear brand and my roommate loves it so much. We got their Milk Bread, Egg Sando and Katsu Sando with reasonable price and huge portion. Both Sandos were decent and we preferred Tamago Sando which was served with huge portion of egg salad.

There are still kinks to be worked out. I visited yesterday and we waited 40mins to get our order of 1 chicken and 1 pork sando. The reasoning: they were working on all pork orders and were waiting on the chicken to be cooked. The restaurant is very cozy and we didn’t have plans after, so we didn’t mind, but there were people waiting who ordered chicken sandos before us who had places to be. You just wouldn’t expect this fast casual looking spot with so many staff to take so long to make a sandwich. It also isn’t very packed with people on the day we visited either When we finally got our order, the pork sando was already cold. Overall the sandwiches were delicious but their kinks are very surprising. I hope they get them fixed soon, hasn’t it been two months already since opening?
A recent visit to Taku Sando on Greenpoint Avenue proved to be a delightful experience. The centerpiece of my meal was the Ton-Katsu Sando, a sandwich that perfectly encapsulates the fusion of traditional Japanese flavors with a touch of American flair. The pork was tender, having been marinated overnight, then breaded with panko for a satisfying crunch. Complemented by a tangy karashi mustard mayo and a subtle sweetness from the house sauce, all sandwiched between pillowy homemade shokupan bread, this sando was a memorable treat. To drink, I opted for the Yuzu Ginger Ale, a refreshing choice with its vibrant yuzu citrus flavor paired brilliantly with the sharpness of ginger— a perfect palate cleanser or accompaniment to the rich flavors of the sandwich. Taku Sando’s approach to the classic Japanese sando brings a unique twist that fits right into Brooklyn's diverse culinary scene. The ambiance of the place, with options to dine in a casual yet chic setting or take your meal to nearby Transmitter Park, makes it an ideal spot for a quick yet satisfying meal.
Quaint little Japanese joint serving tasty Katsu Sandwiches. Good vibe and good staff however a bit pricey imo. 2 sandwiches in white bread and a coke plus tip $45 is a bit high even for Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Location is great and right next to WNYC park where you get a great view of NYC skyline.
Ordered at their soft opening in November 2023, when they were primarily takeout only. They were still working out some kinks (e.g. no pork sandwiches available that day) but I would not hold that against them. This review is for their food only. CHICKEN KATSU SANDWICH: 5/5 Delicious, well-balanced flavor between the fresh & crispy cole slaw and bright tonkatsu sauce. But the best part of their chicken sandwich is that they used one piece of dark meat and one piece of white meat! What a genius idea! A lot of other restaurants sometimes struggle with their katsu being too dry but Taku Sando made their chicken sandwich outstanding in my eyes. TAMAGO SANDWICH: 5/5 Delicate sandwich with a wonderful egg flavor that wasn't over powered by mayo. The name and description might need to be corrected because this is really a traditional egg salad sandwich. There are no additional toppings (its current description as of 11/4/23 has cabbage included) DASHI RIBBON FRIES: 3/5 Intriguing idea but underwhelming final product. The ribbon fries are cut on site - it's amazing to watch them make each order individually beginning with a spiraler. However, during the frying process, some pieces of the ribbon potatoes got stuck together. This resulted in unevenly cooked fries - mostly well done but with 10-15% of the fries stuck together in an oily, undercooked stack of potatoes. In addition, I was excited for the dashi seasoning but it really ended up adding a slightly fishy odor without contributing much in terms of flavor. I think the owners need to go back to the drawing board in terms both of cooking process and seasoning. Curious if adding Shichimi powder to their spice mix would help improve it? Overall, would return for their sandwiches but hope their fries are better next time we're in Greenpoint!
Food was good, only a few items on the menu, so gotta expect greatness. Don’t be fooled by the potato croquette naming, it’s actually pretty good. Overall, I think the restaurant is pretty good. It’s comparable to food in Japan. I actually expected more from the egg sandwich. I wasn’t a huge fan of the hint of mustard each sandwich gave. I tried every sandwich type and the fries. You have to eat the fries as soon as receiving it. Once it cools, it becomes soggy and gross. There’s backdoor seating with a fire pit but can’t really sit back there in the winter unless you’re fully bundled up. Inside seating is very limited and not suited for larger groups. Tiny walk way. I’d honestly recommend to order and eat elsewhere, especially if you live near by. Just remember the fries shouldn’t be eaten cold. Also, the line goes fast, but the wait can be forever. I waited like 45 minutes for a relatively large order for four people. There’s a small shelving of merch if you’re interested. I wouldn’t rate it a full 5/5 because it’s pricy, long wait, not enough seating. Still, it deserves a 4 because the food tastes good. (I’m more of a foodie lol). Interior felt more like a case than a restaurant.
Basically prepare to pay $18 for a sandwich. I wanted to be mad but after each bite the sandwich got better and better. It is good. But I definitely felt robbed but also satisfied. Im glad I stopped in to try it out and the place is super cute. I chose take out and they packaged the food well. The sandwich is a nice size, the bread throws me off a bit because it reminds me of a school cafeteria but that worked as well. Lets just say I will come back if someone else is treating!
Taku Sando is a really solid spot for a satisfying Japanese sandwich fix. The katsu is crispy and juicy, the bread is perfectly soft, and the flavors are balanced and thoughtful. Portions are just right, filling without being heavy. Service was friendly and quick. Prices are a little on the higher side for a sandwich, but you can taste the quality ingredients. Overall, definitely worth trying if you’re in the area and craving something comforting yet elevated.
U can have a full meal with a sando here. Because I am not a big eater, I actually finished my sando over two meals - dinner and lunch. It is so good, the bread thick and light, the chicken is tender and crispy. I wanted the fish but they ran out and were so gracious to throw in a free bag of chips. I really appreciate that gesture because you need to uber or drive there so will be awhile, when summer came around, before I can try the fish sando.
I aimed to arrive at opening time, but there was already a line. Even on a weekday, there were quite a few people. The space is very small, and the outdoor terrace seating is definitely not recommended in the summer — it’s extremely hot. Also, the seats in front of the kitchen are right by the entrance door, which opens and closes frequently, so it’s not cool inside even with air conditioning. As for the sandwiches, the taste was average. For reference, I’m Japanese and I often make sandwiches myself, but considering the price, the bread wasn’t particularly good, which was a bit disappointing. The portions were very large, though. The pork cutlet sandwich was packed with plenty of cabbage. I can recommend Yuzu ginger ale. They have wifi 📶
When I entered, I was blown away by the enticing smell of the fresh baked milk bread. I decided to go ahead and order the classic pork Katsu. The flavors and the bread were very good, the problem was with the pork cutlet itself. Parts were chewy and fatty and I had to pick them out and kind of eat around them. I compared it to a prefix lunch I had at Karczma, a local Polish restaurant, for $14 and which included a gigantic pork cutlet that was fork tender, plus mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, and pickle soup. So, when compared to the $16 sandwich… well, I guess there is no comparison. I’ll stick with the old-time place that is not Instagramable perhaps, but has good value and delicious food
This was previously a 5/5. One of my favorites here was their ribbon fries - so good! But recently got it and they were sadly quite cold :( Maybe I had a one off bad batch but hope it’s better next time.
Nice atmosphere, friendly workers- but I can’t justify the price for what is essentially overpriced sandwiches. I got the fish katsu sandwich and was so underwhelmed. If you are starving I would skip.
Came here with friends and ordered both the tonkatsu sando and the tamago sando. The portions were generous; easily shareable among 3–4 people. The tonkatsu sando was flavorful, with a nice crisp from the coleslaw, and finished clean. Really yummy. I was most excited for the tamago sando since I’ve missed the egg sandwiches from Japan’s 7-Eleven, but this one was far too eggy and overwhelming. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend it. Also tried the yuzu ginger ale, which was light and refreshing. Overall, a solid spot for a quick and tasty lunch.
$17 for a katsu sando that is very messy to eat. Delicate bread and the heavily sauced katsu was mismatched, and personally I found that the sauce leaned a bit too heavy towards a vinegary taste. I also tried the "sea salt ribbon fries", which are essentially house-made chips. Mine were so salty that some were inedible. As someone who loves katsu and Japanese food in general, very disappointing overall, especially for the price. I did notice after visiting that they are a small outfit with only two locations - Greenpoint and Kyoto (!), so I'll give them another shot in the near future.
Apparently the pagers weren't working in the back seating area so they brought our food after it's been sitting awhile. I feel like with a $38 sandwich, they should have redone it or had someone check the areas because a few of the other patrons had the same issue with the pagers. The wagyu was way overcooked on one of them and was extremely tough to eat. The shokupan which was also delicious was incredibly soggy and the sandwich itself wasn't even warm anymore. The seasoning for the ribbon fries were also so light that they tasted bland. Disappointing.
I had a lot of hopes for Taku Sando, but was quite disappointed. The hope was built on their commitment for authentic white Japanese sandwich bread, all the right combinations on the menu and the aesthetic of the seating areas. But, the two sandwiches we ordered were just a real miss. The Tamago (egg) was packed with a filling, but I know real Japanese egg salad having visited Japan very often, and this version was all-American. It lacked extra yolks and had used American mayo not Japanese mayo. It was also under seasoned. My husband had the fish katsu sando, and its mistake was being unable to be held as a sandwich. You lifted it from the paper, and it fell to pieces. The proportions of ingredients were all wrong, it was too greasy and sloppy. Only real win was the homemade Yuzu Ginger Beer.
No need to come back here. We were the first order but didn’t get our food for quite some time. I think at least 2-3 parties were served before us. Got chicken katsu and tamago. tamago was better but nothing to really write home about. got a thousand island salad and the veggies were NOT FRESH. see black or red veggies from being old. radish seemed like half eaten, but maybe they like to crush their radish? odd choice. Probably should’ve complained but am never coming back so whatever. No idea why anyone would wait in line for this place.
Tipped $11 for BURNT FRIES and spent $70. So my Wife and I went to a small date on valentines day. We stopped by Taku Sando but got burnt fries. I brought the burnt fries to the attention of the people on register (one girl and the Japanese guy). They told me “this is normal, this is how the fries are supposed to be” Mind you, we’ve been multiple times to Taku Sando and never had fries this burnt, it was too bitter that we couldn’t eat… I declined the offer for new fries because they said “this color and [brittle] texture was normal”. “This is how it’s supposed to be” I also saw the next batch and it’s clear they were all burnt and they rather sell it then remake it. I asked politely for a refund but they refused to help. Saying they can’t refund me today bc they don’t know how and they need a manager. They said they will refund tomorrow and ask to come back tomorrow to make sure…🙁 It’s ashamed because I used to like this place but the service and food quality has significantly dropped. And it’s terrible that they don’t have any standards or regard for me as a guest. I spent money and tipped… I deserve a refund or quality product. It’s sad that the staff didn’t understand service and quality. Serving burnt food is crazy. And the way they didn’t even care to find a solution sucks. Honestly, I tried to enjoy the rest of my meal (the sandwich crew did good) but the interaction at register was so bad I lost my appetite. Also I work in service so I come from a place of understanding but this was completely unacceptable.
This sandwich shop gets quite busy which I understand is a small shop. I am not sure how they keep track of their orders but it’s honestly not okay to be waiting for a sandwich for over 40 minutes. And then upon checking why the beeper didn’t go off it was because they lost the order. We didn’t complain enough but tbh the sandwiches are not worth $17-$20 each and they didn’t do a good job at cutting the sandwich in half…. I would not come back here again.
It’s been quite a while since I’ve experienced such rude people. Came in to pick up an order and they tried to gaslight me that I ordered to a different restaurant? Showed them the screenshot of the order and it was on the shelf behind the whole time. Never going back.
Worst experience ever. I’ve waited 40min for my food, people behind me have got them earlier. When I finally ask them, turns out they completely missed my order. They simply apologized and no more. Even if they didn’t miss my order, they have way too much pick up orders, which really destroy the experience for those who wants to dine in.
Tried Taku Sando with high hopes, but it was a letdown from the first bite. The bread was soggy, completely ruining the texture, and the overall flavor was uninspired. Honestly, I’ve had better katsu sandos from a convenience store fridge at Lawson’s in Japan for just $3—fresher, crispier, and far more satisfying at a fraction of the cost. At these prices, you expect quality. Instead, this felt slapped together with no care or attention to detail. My advice? Go back to the drawing board and fix the fundamentals—because if this is the standard, this place won’t last long. It feels like a scam dressed up as hype food, and honestly, I’m embarrassed I fell for it.
