Great food ! Great service The shrimp enchilada was great
We loved it! The service was so great! They moved the patio heaters for us! The strawberry agave wine margaritas where so great! My moms allergic to stuff so they brought out samples before we ordered! Just a great place!!! We got the bean dip with green sauce, the huge burrito, flan ( only complaint was to much cinnamon but we ate it all still good!) a pitcher of the strawberry margarita for $67!!! So so good! Definitely coming back!
We stoped here on our way home from Hearst Castle. The food was delicious. All our meals were made fresh and you can taste the authenticity of the food . The waiter was very friendly. I would recommend this place.
The red sauce is spicier than most others and a good solid green chile. The beans are a combination of refried and whole. A nice combo and the rice had a good slice and not mushy. The best was the homemade lemon ice cream with a fresh raspberry sauce. Save room for it. Very nice find. I don't usually rave about food. The service was good. It was a Sunday night and steadily busy. Dinner was at a nice pace.
I judge my Mexican food by the chips, salsa and refried beans. El Chorlito hits all three out of the park. I crave their salsa and have tried hard to recreate it at home! The owners are lovely, a nice little family affair including their little daughter. If the weather is warm, sitting on the patio is very nice. Most all of the staff they find are very nice, friendly and helpful.
Stopped here for lunch on a Friday and got great service, a nice outdoor view, and really good food. Every time we pass through this part of California this has become our favorite stop for Mexican food. Warm, fresh chips with the best salsa we have had anywhere. Not too hot or too lame. I had a chimichanga and my wife had an enchilada and both tasted great. Were surprised the place was not packed as on previous visits, and the quieter meal made the visit even better. I don't give out too many 5 stars for food, service AND atmosphere...but this is one time that I can.
We arrived at San Simone late in the evening. So we decided to try this restaurant as it was next door to the hotel and it did not disappoint. Very tasty and filling. Staff very friendly We would go back again
Our experience and meal was fantastic & it exceeded our expectations. Their back yard is surrounded by beautiful plants & peaceful. We got the combo meal with crispy taco & an enchilada with red sauce, beans & rice with yummy cheese on the beans. It was full of flavor, did not skimp on the meat & my taco was perfectly crispy! Thank you for a great experience and to our Lovely server who was very sweet. I cannot believe this place is not packed 24/7. It’s not cheap but no place is anymore. It was worth it!
Best Mexican food in California. Authentic. Top notch.
We were told the local food wasn't good but this place was super good. Don't listen to the locals give this place a chance. Great service and food. Their rice reminded me of my grandmother. Super good.
I was staying the night at a hotel across the 101 so decided to stop in for dinner and was blown away by their Asada plate. The steak with perfectly cooked with a side of beans topped with melted cheese, rice and avocados. I sliced up the steak and made three delicious tacos with avocado, salsa and their onion/cilantro mix in a warm corn tortilla. I love tacos and these were among the best I’ve ever had!
This place was wonderful. It isn't huge nor is it usually busy but it is certainly a positive thing. It has beautiful views of the ocean from the inside and an outside grass patio with tables and chairs that have an even better view all while the calm ocean breeze flows around you. The bathrooms are very nice and CLEAN as well. If you want a relaxing place to eat when you travel to Hearst castle then you should definitely stop by here!
We found this restaurant located right off highway 101 after visiting the Elephant Seals. We were greeted and quickly seated in a friendly manner. Our wait staff was a young man with lots of enthusiasm! He was so attentive in getting us drinks, refills, chips and salsa! Our server was delightful! The food was amazing! The servings were good size! We sat outside among trees, cactus with a view of the ocean. El Chorlito is recommended!
This little restaurant was a pleasure to visit!! My family and I had breakfast outside in the back yard area and it was clean and peaceful the food was good we ordered the huevos rancheros, the wet burrito, the Chile relleno the machaca and the goodies never stopped. The food had flavor! The service was awesome the place opens at 11:30am we got there at 11:15am and the waiter was nice enough to sit us and give us a menu while we waited for it to be time.
Delicious and savory authentic mexican food accompanied by gorgeous veiws of the Pacific ocean set behind colorful, charming blooming gardens! I ordered a chile relleno & shredded beef taco combination with rice and beans. I was very pleased and delighted with everything on my plate. Although, I must say the chile relleno was my absolute favorite! My friend had the Morales special, it was a unique plate with corn tortillas covered with a wonderful green verde sauce, cheese, Ortega chiles, green onions, sour cream topped with a perfectly cooked over easy fried egg. We also ordered a side of guacamole (very fresh and also fabulous) alongside the chips and salsa which were promptly brought to our table upon being seated. Our server Kathleen was attentive and very friendly, giving great knowledge about the menu and information to other guests as well of local places of must do's and see around the area. I learned that the amazing artwork displayed throughout the restaurant were painted by the owner over the years as well. Outstanding food, fantastic veiws and lunch with a sweet friend to complete a beautiful day! Thank you El Chorlito!
I was so impressed with the service here, their customer service is top notch. We enjoyed their supreme nachos, kids got tenders, a two taco plate with a side of beans and rice, and a combo taco enchilada plate. Great serving sizes and good food, we also enjoyed their complimentary chips and salsa. We will return next time we are in the area. Support this local business!
Pretty view of the ocean. I had a crunchy al a carte chicken taco. Very good. I enjoyed dipping the tortilla chips in my husband's side of beans that were delicious. The waiter was friendly.
We had the place to ourselves for our early dinner and I have no idea why! The place is fantastic from the food to the views and everything in between! We were greeted right away with a genuine smile and welcome, sat outside on a gorgeous afternoon and were immediately offered drinks. The Skinny Margarita's were perfect, light and refreshing without all the sweetness! We ordered the Taquito's appetizer and they came out quickly, hot, super crispy and loaded with tender beef. Our two combination plates came out shortly after and were piping hot. I've never had such thick, rich enchilada sauce, packed with flavor and absolutely delicious! The crispy taco was fried fresh to order and oh so crispy, chocked full of the most tender pork. I got too full too fast so had to take the delicious rice home for later! Definitely a 5 star experience all around!
Really surprised by the mixed reviews, we loved this place. The ambiance is warm and friendly, casual and relaxed, and our server was lovely. The views are gorgeous! The food is not super fancy but it all tastes great. Especially dessert!! I would recommend this place, especially because they're not a lot of other Mexican restaurants in the vicinity.
From reading other reviews; people are apparently difficult to please? My husband and I were here in 2015 and thought it was great. Now 2024, I was very grateful I and my sidekick pup could visit again. It's even nicer. Sat at the gorgeous outdoor patio and enjoyed a lovely meal and a glass of wine listening to waves crash along the coast. What's not to love?!? Solid pollo fajitas. Overall, it was a very enjoyable afternoon!
We had great strawberry margaritas. We had a great time watching the sun go down sitting outside. The food was very, very good. The service was really great. It is very dog friendly. And they put up with us laughing and having a great time. I want to say thank you to the staff and the experience.
A quiet little restaurant in the heart of San Simeon which serves authentic and pretty good Mexican food. A classic Mexican menu with the upgraded cocktail list to go with the usual margaritas and beer. Great views of the ocean and if you time it right you might get a great sunset in as well. We were staying at the hotel next door and stopped by here to eat and we were delighted. Old school authentic Mexican food. You can't beat it.
Great Mexican restaurant near the beach in San Simeon and right next to our hotel! Couldn’t have been better located! Good choices for vegetarians on the menu, we had the veggie fajitas and they were very tasty! Lots of seating indoors and a lovely seating area outside. Restaurant has a lovely garden area, and you can watch the sunset. Staff were friendly and attentive. It seems their dessert special is homemade Lemon ice cream, just wish I’d left enough room for this as it looked delicious and lots of fellow diners were very complimentary about it. If you’re in the area this place won’t disappoint!
Great friendly service and nice employees. Giving a 4 star because the meat is just okay. Lacking some flavor and seasoning Overall, decent food, though.
Short staff so be patient. Enchilada sauce very good, taco good. Margarita is strong and not sweet. Salsa is great. Very nice outdoor patio. Good parking. This is very close to Hearst Castle, about 5 miles and close to Cambria.
This spot deserves more recognition. Food came in fast. Server was great. Couldnt ask for more.
Enjoyed our meals and appreciated friendly hostess/server and beautiful, scenic ocean view.
Solid little Mexican joint. The salsa was a bit on the spicy side, good flavor on the chicken burrito, good chicken fajitas. Good but nothing that blew me away. That being said, I would go back if I was in the mood for Mexican...it’s the only place close. Friendly service. A little pricey.
The food was excellent and the portion was plenty, at a fair reasonable price.I have no complaints. It’s our favorite place to stop when we drive up the coast toward Big Sur
After checking in at a nearby hotel we arrived at this restaurant half an hour before closing. It was still packed, but we quickly got a table. We only wanted to have a small bite so we opted for a single taco and a small burrito. The taste was good although we had better Mexican before.
Wow is how you start and wow is how it ends with a bang. The food is very good, the people are extra nice, it's like a minimalist's restaurant if the weather permits sit out the view complements the food breath taking. The taste of the food feels very authentic, every item deserves it's own honorable mention. A true hidden gem, if you dont look out for it you will miss it. Gave 4 stars for the bathroom factor, but other than that it's an amazing place.
My friend and just ate there. Sorry no Pics but the other review pics capture the beautiful setting and gardens. Service was good. Food was yummy. Prices are very fair. The place has some deferred maintenance, could stand some sprucing up, but it’s family run and has been there forever. The mole is fantastic! I’d go back for sure.
When we went, they were only offering for take-out, so unfortunately we couldn’t eat inside, but we were at least able to use the bathrooms. Also, the service was great as the person in the front table was kind. In the end, the food though pricey, does live to its price. The food was amazing, so we still definitely enjoyed it.
This place was a cute place right by Hearst Castle. The food that we ordered was delicious! I ordered the chicken enchiladas and my husband ordered a Burrito. They give a good amount of food. I would have given 5 stars but it was really warm inside and flies kept buzzing through the restaurant which was pretty annoying. Besides that, the food and service was great and so delicious! We will definitely come again next time we are in town
Very good small Mexican restaurant at San Simeon on Hwy 1. Very nice rustic ambience. Dined here in July 2021. They allow inside seating. You can also sit outside, enjoy the breeze and ocean view. Very courteous host and server. I recommend this place if you are driving by this location.
El Charito Mexican Restaurant, conveniently located on US-1, is a great stop if you’re looking for satisfying Mexican food with friendly service. The location itself makes it easy to access, whether you’re passing through or planning a casual meal, and the welcoming atmosphere sets a positive tone right from the start. The food overall was quite good and clearly prepared with care. The flavors were authentic and comforting, making it a solid choice for anyone craving classic Mexican dishes. One highlight worth mentioning is their red sauce. While it had a rich depth and bold character, I personally found it a little on the bitter side. That said, taste is subjective, and others may appreciate its strong, robust flavor profile. Aside from that, the dishes were enjoyable and well presented. What truly stood out during the visit was the service. The staff was courteous, attentive, and genuinely warm, which made the dining experience even better. Orders were taken promptly, questions were answered patiently, and the overall hospitality made us feel welcome and relaxed throughout the meal. In summary, El Charito is a dependable spot on US-1 for good Mexican food paired with excellent service. While the red sauce may not suit every palate, the quality of the food, combined with the friendly and professional staff, makes it a place worth visiting again.
The building was very clean but very quiet. The service was fast for only 3 employees. And the food was INCREDIBLE!! I got the Chicken Fuentas, and not only was the size big but very good! Fully cooked, not raw or charred. The bathroom was very clean and the server was very kind. I would definitely say they had a good amount of food. The options was scarce but traditional meals. The ice cream, OH MY GOSH, they hand make it, and it is totally worth the price! The meals were all about $20.00 each, but you get a lot of food for the price. I would definitely return.
Mole enchilada is good No on the margarita! All booze, no lemon not like it at all. No on the tortilla soup, it's basically bean soup with some chicken, not tortilla soup. Did not like it. Friendly service though.
Cute little place, restaraunt wasn't very packed. We were sat quickly. The food was ok. For the area, I would say it was ok.
The food here was generally ok. Serving portions were on the small side, in particular, everybody in my family complained about the beans, both black and refried. My lady said the green sauce was sour, without any heat. And l pretty much abandoned the rice, as it was tasteless. So they may have forgotten to prepare it last night? Otherwise okay, but nothing special. I won't rush back....
We have been here many years ago during vacation. And we were happy with everything. This vacation we passed by and it was a no-brainer to have dinner here again. In a few words, the service was not good, it took ages before we could order. Nobody stopped by after serving to check if we would need something. Refill of drinks came when we were leaving the restaurant. The food had "very natural" tast, no spices or salt on anything, regardless of meat, beans or rice. Only the salsa was pretty hot. Portion size was very small. No creme fresh or some lettuce on for the fajitas. Tortillas were on request only - never had that before.
We just finished our tour at Hearst Castle. We were hungry and quite a ways before we would get into town for lunch. Driving down the coast and caught this place through the corner of my eye. Great location but also not much else in the area. We walked through the door and th out it was closed until we found someone in the back. The place was clean but a little run down. Decent menu but food was average. I liked my plate but my wife was not happy. When hungry and not much else in the area, don’t hesitate but don’t go out of your way for this one. Only saw one person working there. She was pleasant and helpful.
Place is dirty. We got seated next to a bathroom, and we could feel the stench. When asked to be re seated, they said the other areas are closed. Service was OK. Food is 5/10 at best. Not recommended.
My wife and I walked in at 5pm on a Monday. We were seated quickly but that’s about the only nice things about our visit here. The chips and salsa aren’t made there. The wine margarita was so salty it was undrinkable. Our waiter was nice enough to exchange it for a beer instead. We were told they were out of Corona but then some magically appeared for the table seated after us. The food portions are very generous but the food is not good. Both of our orders came out luke warm. The chicken in the enchiladas were from the day before. My wife’s crispy taco fell apart on her first bite. The beans as mentioned in another review taste A LOT like Rosaritas. We sent back most of our meal, paid our bill and left. Save your time and money and eat somewhere else.
We came with friends and had separate checks. They charged us a 20% tip plus overcharged us. The menu price was marked way lower than the charged amount. A scoop of ice cream was 14.00. A chili Delano was 22.00. We shared a dish and our bill was 68.00! Watch what they charge you vs what they have posted for prices. Pretty disappointed. We are locals and won’t be back
We went to get some dinner and I ordered a chicken enchilada/chile relleno with rice and beans, chicken nachos, asada burrito, 3 asada tacos with rice and beans. Plus a asada quesadilla. The man was nice who took our order. There was not al lot of people in side probably due to the rain. We ordered our food and went straight to the house across the street and our food was cold! Not even warm! They forgot our burrito and we took that back home it was cold. The bean tastes like Rosita refined canned beans. My chicken enchiladas in the middle was cold! For the price I paid over $20 each meal the food was not worth it. They were not busy so the food should have been hot or a least warm but was not! For our first time experience eating here I would mostly likely not be returning.
Visiting to see the Cambria Christmas Market, I was excited to try this place, as it had good reviews. Very disappointed at the end. Eventhough the waitress tried to give us good service, I was not satisfied. We chose to seat inside because there were small flies outside around the tables. But at the end, it was worst inside. Flies every where, once we got our food we had to keep making sure the flies didnt settle on our food. Not very sanitary. I got a chile relleno burrito. The green sauce on top was ok, not much flavor at all. My son got a kids burrito and the waitress was nice enough to make it a chicken burrito, thank you for that. I ordered a strawberry mojito, but they said they didnt have strawberries. So no mojito for me. Unfortunately if I come and visit again, I will not be eating here. The place looks very nice from the outside, but looks can be deceiving.
I would give 2 and 1/2 if possible. Their $40 burrito(!) is not worth having unless you are really starving and every other place nearby place is jam packed. The salsa that comes with nachos is clearly straight from a store bought jar, enchiladas and quesadillas are very close to store bought pre-made ones. The only saving grace is that the shredded beef is ok and hence the one additional star, but even that is ruined with low quality salsa. And if the $40 didn't illustrate the point clearly enough, everything in here is grossly overpriced.
Milk was spoiled, service was excellent, food was not so great, mole was the worst I ever had in a Mexican restaurant, and I LOVE Mexican food, salsa was terrible. I had 2 combo, the beans were good. Not much else I can say for the place unfortunately no
Terrible experience. Rudest service. Was forgotten about despite getting their attention. Food took forever. Out of things to make certain drinks. I do not recommend
We came here on a whim and it was a mistake. We walked in to find no one at the hostess podium, waited about 5 min and no one showed up. Walked more into the restaurant to the cashier and waited in front of someone, and they did not even acknowledge us. It wasn't until the actual hostess appeared a few minutes later and asked us if we wanted to be seated. That should have the indication we should have gone elsewhere. Once we got all our food, we had to ask for utensils. No one checked in on us, so my partner got up to the cashier and asked for utensils. We got the carnitas and the #4 combo with tamale and enchilada. The carnitas are dry and the rice was not fresh. The #4 combo was SUPER greasy because it was all cheese. It came with rice and beans but the rice tasted dry and old. The beans were bad. The tamale was the only thing I could eat. I couldn't cut through the enchilada even with a knife. It feels like everything is heavily microwaved or just prepared very poorly. While we were eating, we heard 2 separate parties complaining about the service and this place was empty. I'm not sure what's going on with the staff, it seems like no one is communicating with each other. Their only redeeming quality was the view.
So I came to eat for dinner. I’m from out of town. I walk into the restaurant and they are very rude. They do not say hello. They will not say I’ll be with you in a minute and when I approach the individual to ask how we get seated He mumbled under his breath after walking for me after walking away from me two times. I asked him if he did not want me here or something and he just looks at me and I just walked out. I will not be somewhere that does not have a great customer service. That is the bare minimum to expect from a restaurant. It felt very unwelcoming!!!! I looked to the side of me and there is a couple sitting at the table and they said yeah I said that’s what you’ve been dealing with. They said yes. Now I will be leaving and finding a better place for me to eat where I am welcomed
Service was very lengthy waits. Flys & spider webs found in the corners. Beans came out dry, Portion were medium sized. PLATES WERE NOT SPOT FREE CLEANED!!!! No type of salsa / flavor, was not made with love. You will not caught me or my family here again. Only reason they got a star was for the view..
Walked in, no one up front greeting customers, mostly empty restaurant, took forever to be seated...we got the chips and salsa, tried it and walked out after one bite of nasty salsa and stale chips...avoid at all costs.
Never had watery soupy quesadilla in my life, ordered a quesadilla and came all water soaked, and some soup looking yellow stuff!!!!
Believe the bad reviews, prices are always a bit more on the coast but a $40 burrito?! Cobwebs everywhere, zero atmosphere, a dead zone. The servers were nice though.
The food wasn't good at all. They need to visit Mexico to see how Mexican food is. There were only one person on the restaurant, I thought not body was there, we have to enter to the second room to talk with these person, he never came back to check if we need something else. He was taking orders, server, taking payments doing drinks. And horrible music.
I was told by locals here in cambria do not eat at this place as the food is not very good, but I had to try it and man oh man they were right. I’m Mexican American and the food my wife And I had was for sure the worst tasting Mexican food we ever had, the salsa had no taste at all it was like I was eating tomato paste, there was a real Mexican couple on the next table was they tasted the salsa they laughed and just took off I had the fajitas and they were missing the fajitas sauce it was so bad they tasted like meet with bell peppers and no salt no taste the tortillas were so bad it was like eating cardboard Do not recommend this restaurant I’m embarrassed for the owners don’t they care how bad this place is
My wife and I went to this place on Sat Feb 22, 2025 to have some dinner. We were staying at a resort nearby and decided to walk and give El Chorlito a try. Right from the start we had a weird feel about this place: no people ,rude waiters, wearing winter jackets inside , no smiles, no name, just a simple : how many? We were seated in a corner table and were served complimentary chips and salsa. My wife order the Horchata from the drink's list ( watery powder horchata with ice), nothing to do with the typical Mexican drink we are used to. The food we order had no taste, lacked salt and was saturated with garlic. We did not finish the plate , asked for the check and left. We are never coming back. I would never recommend this place to anybody.
First off … was not greeted after walking by 2 waiters. Ordered food and came promptly. Ordered a cheese quesadilla for 15$ and bean tostada for 16.50$. The food was sub par at best. Got the check and noticed an item was off by 2$ ….. not a big deal. Asked to correct it and the waiter pretended that he didn’t understand me. I tried to explain and he proceeded to tell me that the price difference was taxes. ( Total BS!) He then started cursing at me ! Dropping F bombs!! Everyone has a bad day, but that’s uncalled for.
I don’t know if this is customary but I have never had a waiter add the tip with the bill. Let me just say that I didn’t catch the waiters name because he didn’t give it and he was already upset because I went with my family and we all paid for our own food, he was visibly unhappy about it. It all went downhill from there. I’ve always tipped depending on the service I receive during the time I eat at the establishment. Needless to say I would never have tipped him that much. He never came back around to ask if we needed anything else. My child sat there with an empty cup and I had to stop someone to ask for a refill. I left because I was not feeling well, nothing to do with the food and I left my cousin money to pay for me. When I seen this I got quite upset. Needless to say I will request a different waiter when I return if he happens to be our waiter.
The food was horrible. They got the orders wrong to much. They gave us a smashed glass cup . The food was cold but the chips where hot . Don't get the ceaser salad to expensive well its only salad 1 carrot 1 tomato no cheese on it .
This place deserves to be out of business. Dirty dirty dirty bathrooms, probably the kitchen. Too. The health department needs to know about this place. I don't know what they're doing, hopefully they'll go out of business. Health department needs to know about this place.\n Didn't find out till I ordered then I was very dissatisfied.
First thing first there is no hard liquor however they have Rum and vodka on their menu when we asked for whiskey they didn’t mention that they don’t have license for hard liquor and the rum and vodka on their menu are just names and no alcohol in it. About their food, pooff! is absolutely not fresh you could tell is stayed and they just reheated before served. The only thing I liked was view on their patio. After all
We had days old rice it was sad the experience we expected was definitely not there. The beans were canned beans and fish had absolutely no flavor at all. We are big eaters and love to eat and new places this place we will never be back . My boyfriend ordered a burrito and he hated it .. he left half .. he loves food and he could eat .. very disappointed in the food it was HORRIBLE .. if your a true Mexican you’ll go in there and walk out that’s not Mexican food . That’s not how you make it . I wanted to walk out and ask for a refund .
This place is nice, that's all. The food is NOT MEXICAN AT ALL, it's not authentic. The rice was undercooked. I ordered an enchilada, a tamale, and a tostada. The enchilada tasted bad; the chili seemed canned. The tamale was hard and dry, as if it had been frozen. Don't stop at this place unless you can't tell the difference between fresh Mexican food and frozen, processed food. The staff is friendly.
Ordered 2 cheeseburger one was raw when I went back to inform them they stated the owner would get back in touch with me. So apparently they do not care either. HORRIBLE!!! BUT NOTE THE LOCATION OF THIS AREA IS BEAUTIFUL
The food here is both terrible and overpriced. I ordered carnitas that were extremely dry, with flour tortillas that were hard around the edges. The rice was overly salty, and the beans were served at room temperature. We also tried the chicken flauta, which was flavorless, and the sides were just as disappointing as stated above. The only redeeming item was the salsa, but even that was dragged down by the stale chips. Despite only ordering 2 meals and waters, our bill was still over $50, which feels outrageous for the quality received. This place needs real cooks, not crooks. With food and service like this, it’s hard to believe it’s still open—hopefully a restaurant with actual quality and integrity will El Chorlito's place.
This place looks amazing, the food and the service not so much! I order chicken fajitas and they were not that great, I order chicken tortilla soup and it tasted like a can soup, no tortilla or other condiments with this, no flavor tasted like the inside of a pot pie, the hard shell beef taco was ok. Sadly the service hurt this rating, had me waiting, the waiter wasn’t there, one of the hosts was a bit rude. At the end I try to support local small businesses but this wasn’t a good experience.
