Red Pepper offers authentic Sichuan Chinese cuisine alongside Americanized favorites. Customers rave about the flavorful, spicy dishes and the friendly owner, Jenny. The hot pot, dumplings, and General Tso's tofu are highly recommended.
Tip: If you're looking for authentic Chinese food and are tired of overly sweet Americanized dishes, this is the place to go. Try the Sichuan dishes for a unique and flavorful experience.
The food was surprisingly amazing! The curry was perfect. My pad Thai was superb. My son loved his beef soup, I don’t remember the correct name, even though he complained about the restaurant selection. We will be back.
Well that was a lovely surprise! I needed a new place for lunch today after some surgery follow-up testing and my usual favorite place it was closed. Thai food being one of my favorites I looked up a few local spots and initially thought this was a more fast food oriented Thai place because of some of the pictures, while the food looked absolutely amazing. Curiosity won out and I'm so glad it did! This felt like a little modern slice of Thailand itself. Would paneling on the walls with plants and natural furniture, natural lighting, dishes served in stone plates and bowls and gentle, soothing musical tones. I had the place almost all to myself which was lovely, but wouldn't have minded a crowd because the service was excellent and the dishes wonderful. I had the papaya salad, an old favorite, and a plate of Thai Basil stir fry with chicken. The salad had all the flavors you expect, and wonderfully portioned. The vegetables and chicken were piping hot not over seasoned or over sauced, and my waiter was just as attentive and kind as though I had a whole table of people with me. Wonderful hospitality.
I went on the weekday and the service was super fast. The flavor were pretty good for Thai modern restaurant. Love the presentation of the dishes, friendly staff try this place out!
Came here for lunch, service was good and the food was freshly cooked and delicious. We had the Pad Kra Pao (Thai chili and basil) pork and the Ginger and Mushroom Chicken lunch specials.
I absolutely LOVE Twisted Noodles of Chapel Hill and can’t say enough great things about them!! I come here weekly and have tried most things on the menu and have absolutely loved everything I’ve tried!! It’s such a great feeling knowing you can order anything on the menu and it taste like perfection!!! Also love their amazing customer service!! Even when they’re short staffed and running around like crazy, they still make sure you’re taken care of!! Super child-friendly and such a peaceful environment that isn’t over-stimulating for kids! 10/10 recommend!!!
Thailand, here I come. The food was very flavorful and spicy. The decor was very clean and colorful. Highly recommended for Authentic Thai food.
Great place, great atmosphere. New ownership since OCT18 and I love what they are doing with the establishment. The staff is awesome and they will probably remember your order if you get it more than once! If you're on the fence, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.
The best Thai food I’ve ever had in my life!!! If I could only eat one thing the rest of my life it would be the panang curry from Twisted Noodles. The curries are exceptional. I eat here about 3-5 times a week. BEST Thai food in the triangle area hands down. Thank you twisted noodles!!
Food was amazing, I absolutely love the calamari. Everything was so delicious, get the iced Thai tea! Im excited to come back, also love the vibe of the place :)
This is THE best Thai food I’ve ever had. Every time I visit Chapel Hill, I make sure to eat at Twisted Noodle at least twice. The food is so fresh and delicious. The meals are consistently perfect. Never once has anything been sub par. I highly recommend dining in, though take-out is also amazing. The staff is so pleasant and accommodating. Can’t wait to go back!!!
Love their Pad Thai. Almost all of their menu items can be made vegetarian or vegan. Some you can't because the key ingredient is not vegan. Pro tip: Most of the "vegetarian" options on the menu is Buddhist vegetarian (meaning no garlic, onions etc) so don't be put off if the dish you want wasn't indicated as vegetarian. Servers are friendly and great service!
Fantastic taste every time. Absolutely in love with their Drunken Noodles! Their sticky rice and mango is a testimony to their authenticity. Their warm and genuinely inclusive and friendly service goes well with their incredible food.
Picked up dinner here - the process of ordering online and picking up was very smooth. The lady who helped me was nice and double checked the order. There were only a few people in the restaurant so it would be easy to get a table. My bf got the crispy drunken noodles and some crab Rangoon. I got the yellow curry (medium) with veggies. It was very good but not very spicy! We also got spring rolls which were delicious!
Just tried this place for the first time and it was great! We ordered the twice-cooked pork and boiled fish soup and both were delicious. The pork dish was spicy, saucy, and flavorful and the fish soup was tasty and well-seasoned. The owner of the restaurant was very friendly and the service was great! Definitely recommend this place!
I have been to all of the restaurants that serve hot pot within convenient driving distance of Durham over the past 3 years, and this is the only one I come back to. The broth is delicious, and the combos offered are a great deal for hot pot. You can also pick what you want a la carte. The ingredients are traditional and seasonal, with lots of different options for meats and veggies, heavy on the mushrooms. The restaurant is small and cozy, and the owner has always been friendly, attentive, and great with recommendations. I’ll keep coming back for more!
I pass Red Pepper on my daily commute, but it's tucked away so I had never been before. That will never be the case again!! I have NEVER had a hotpot so good -- Chef Jenny's family recipes are directly Szechuan and you can taste it in every ounce. That's important! This isn't just your neighborhood Chinese restaurant; this place is genuinely the most authentic that I've ever been to *on the entire Eastern seaboard.* I have always loved Asian food, particularly spicy Chinese food, so please trust me when I say that this is probably the BEST gem I've found. We came specifically because my girlfriend had never had a hot pot before, and she was eager to try her hand at cooking the meats herself. What we didn't expect was the quality!! Every bite was amazing - the radish and lotus roots were crisp, the meat was flavorful, the veggies were fresh, AND THE RICE!! Oh, the rice! Honestly, if Red Pepper sold their soup broths, I would buy it by the gallon. I have never been to a restaurant that made me leave this happy. We will definitely be back!!
Absolutely wonderful! Jenny is extremely kind, we immediately felt welcome and comfortable. Now the food- it’s incredible. This is my first hot pot experience and I am OBSESSED. I’m not a soup person but this is the best broth I’ve ever had and the experience is delightful! A hidden gem, but I’m glad I finally came to experience this! Wonderful authentic food and a cozy and friendly atmosphere, it’s perfect for a cold rainy day!!
My wife and I randomly came in on a Saturday evening and ordered the dumplings and general tso chicken. Both were amazing, and we loved the spicy sauce she gave us with the dumplings. The owner is so sweet and we over heard her saying to another customer that a lot of these dishes are her mother’s recipe.
If you're someone who loves overly sweet Americanized "Chinese" food this may not be your spot. If you're like me and continually disappointed by the Chinese food offerings in the Triangle area, get yourself into Red Pepper as quickly as possible! Everything we tried here was phenomenal and I look forward to many more meals here. Standouts for me we're the Pork w/ Smoked Tofu and the Black Fungus/Mushroom appetizer. I'm used to getting the mushroom dish as a cold appetizer at West coast restaurants, but here it was served warm with copious amounts of garlic and cilantro. SO GOOD!!!! The flavors in all of the dishes we tried were well balanced and true to those that we fell in love with in Seattle, San Francisco & Taipei restaurants. Making our experience even more enjoyable was the warm hospitality of the owner. It is painful to read the negative reviews about this place as they are so off base in my opinion. In summary, if you love authentic Chinese flavors, come here. If you think super sweet, oily and salty Chinese like you find in a mall food court or PR Changs it's probably not going to be your jam!
Come here for the absolutely wonderful authentic Chinese food!! The Hot Pot, the dumplings, and especially the spicy beef noodle soup are all delicious and the owner is so sweet! We are always eager to come back and try new things! So much better than American Chinese takeout!
Best Chinese Food in Chapel Hill/Durham. Space is a bit limited, but the food is delish! They have 2 menus, one is the standard American Chinese menu, and the other is authentic Chinese (for the adventurous types). The owner is always so nice and accommodating. Their dumplings are amazing!!!
I recommend this restaurant to people who are interested in authentic dishes from the Sichuan region in China. This is not just another Chinese restaurant where one grabs the typical general tso's or orange chicken (although those are served as well during lunch time.) The food is unique (relative to other places I have tried in Chapel Hill and Durham) and delicious. If you like supporting businesses that are special in their own way, give this place a try.
This is the best Chinese food in town! They have an amazing menu of authentic dishes alongside the standard americanized fare, and even the "classic" dishes, like General Tsos, are given unique treatment with noticeable yet well-balanced spices! The staff is amazingly gracious as well! 5 Stars all the way around!
Wow, really authentic chinese food, truly outstanding! A nice cozy atmosphere inside. The food was super delicious and excellent portions!! Green tea was yummy. The hot and sour soup really hit the spot on a cold snowy day. And the service was phenomenal. The owner Jennifer was very friendly and genuinely sincere with her wonderful customer service. I would highly recommend!!! 😎😎😎
Fast service, great prices, and delicious Chinese food. What more could you ask for. My wife and I stopped here when we got a craving for Chinese food. We each got a lunch special. For the portion, price, and quality you'd be hard pressed to find something better in the area. I highly recommend you stop by and try their food. I'll be going back to try the dinner menu soon.
Everything I've had from here is sooo good. If you like tofu, you HAVE to get the General Tso's Tofu! I've had it more than a dozen times and it never disappoints. Always the perfect amount of spicy heat. I've only eaten here at lunch so I can only comment on the lunch portions...they are more than enough. I never eat all of the meal at one sitting. Check them out if you have never been. SO GOOD!!
Great authentic Chinese place to eat. Now, if Google could fix their menu website as it has the wrong one and the description as it does not offer a buffet either. They definitely do not offer "Asian" dishes, just Chinese ones. Other than that, I recommend the Ma Po Tofu which is a typical dish of Chengdu and the Hot Pot. For Hot Pot go with a group of 4 or more so the bill can be divided. If you are alone you can try the Mao Cai (single version of the Hot Pot) big difference is you get a bowl with some of the ingredients of hot pot but can't really choose what goes in it but can choose what not to be put.
Current version of this restaurant opened ~3 months ago. It is now clearly aiming to serve authentic Chinese food, although a menu of your standard Chinese takeout fare is available. The Triangle area lacks options for good, interesting, and authentic Asian food (they do exist, but there are few in any given category). It is great to see an alternative to Gourmet Kingdom, and one that actually serves real Sichuan hotpot. Their Americanised Chinese menu was also good, with the beef fried rice being quite delicious. So, for serious foodies, this place should be at the top of your "need to try" list.
I had ordered their fried tofu starter, a medium massaman curry with tofu and their Thai Tea. I liked their tea as it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet and it had a nice flavor to it. Their massaman curry was very good and everything in it was well cooked. The service was a little slower as it took 15-20 min to get our check and the restaurant did not seem crowded. Our waitress was very friendly. I would come back again.
Good, casual place. Food came out quickly. They have gluten-free options, but it was a bit difficult to get what we wanted. There aren’t any ‘specific GF items.’ The inside is nice, but very basic. Good value. I like the name of the restaurant too.
Let's start by the positives: nice atmosphere and great service. What let it down was the food. We ordered the batter-fried pork gyoza dumplings. Definitely a different way to cook dumplings but it was not better than regular pan fried dumplings. I think perhaps just deep frying the dumplings would be better than battering it up. I ordered the twisted general chicken. I went for a safer choice since I was not feeling adventurous. It was not what I expected (general tso's). What threw me off was the overwhelming taste of vinegar. Maybe the chef was a bit too heavy handed. I would rate the food a 3/5. Definitely not good but certainly not the worst.
Tofu delight and mango sticky rice are great. I hope they have soy source. I prefer tofu with soy sauce. Pad Thai seafood is a bit too sweet for me. The flavor is too strong.
The food was pretty good, but didn't have strong enough flavor. The soup & salad before the meal was quite bland- it was just iceberg lettuce and broth. Our server was fine, but not super friendly. Overall, this restaurant was just okay.
I would have gave it 5 stars because the food I had was very good but, the waitress was not to my liking. The male waiter helped us more than our waitress did (and was very polite) and she seemed to get very flustered with us right from the get-go. She had no patience, and I saw her roll her eyes when my sister asked her to correct our food. The atmosphere is very nice, and it’s very clean but the service is the only thing I don’t like. It is a bit pricey though.
Service was a little slow, but that might have been the night we went. Food wasn't bad but it wasn't outstanding either. We really wanted to like this place but we've had much better Thai food in other places.
Amazing traditional Chinese food. Specially based from the region of Chengdu. My recommendation is the beef noodle soup and Chengdu dumplings. Google has the wrong description as this place offers no "Asian" dishes just Chinese, so you won't find here Sushi neither a buffet. Also, the website for their menu is wrong. It sends you to the old business that was set up here, 35 Cafe. That business is gone and so should the old reviews too. Google staff needs to step up their game.
This restaurant proves to be one of the better choices for Chinese in the Chapel Hill area. The chicken entrees tend to have juicy chicken with delicious sauces. The fried rice is always cooked consistently well. Note to be very specific when you order so they don't charge you for a more expensive item, i.e., be specific if you want a lunch or dinner combo.
By far the worst Chinese experience ever! The fried rice was off white with no flavor! The Wonton soup was water and chives and gooey sacks of not sure what! We got the Sesame Chicken and the General Tao Chicken. Both entrees were made the same and no crunch in any bite!! They added sesame seeds from jar and weren't even sauteed!! Please just read as a review and not judge by my experience!! $40 for 2 mains and 2 small soups, Total garbage!!! I even tipped for a carryout!! 🤮
First of all I would like to start with saying the customer service was very rude and unwelcoming. It was more like hurry up and order then get out. I was trying look at the menu and asked a few questions to get the right order. After the cashier telling me they did not have any mushrooms for what I ordered she went and got the angry cook. The cook seem to have temper and asked did I want this order or not. In addition they took thirty minutes just to prepare my order. When the order was finished I had to open the bag just to see them leave no condiments soy sauce or any eating utensils. After opening the bag at the register the cashier then says "oh, did you need any sauce." I reply yes only to get two packets of soy sauce and one sweet and sour sauce with a little tiny cup of hot chili sauce. The spring roll in the order was also overcooked, you could tell by a whole in the star foam. Went here for lunch break because I thought the place looked good and would be great for lunch. Instead of enjoying it just wasted money on poor service not a good quality of cooked food. I'm really disappointed would never come here again!
