Amazing hidden gem for sushi & drinks 😁 the environment has very nice relaxed atmosphere great for a casual date but can be elevated if you visit at night. There are so many options I have yet to try! Everything is prepared with beautiful presentation and tastes fantastic. The art on the walls will definitely spark conversation and the staff is very friendly & knowledgeable if you have any questions.
I often come here for lunch. The lunch specials are really tasty. They offer sushi specials with raw and cooked options. Also cooked meals like pad Thai and basil chicken. I enjoy the Thai iced tea. They are very welcoming to solo diners, which is much appreciated. I recommend the taro custard for dessert. I also have the ramen here, which they will make with rice noodles for gluten-free diners.
Such a great experience! What an amazing night from start to finish. I dined in on a Sunday evening after 5pm and I must say perfect timing - the location wasn’t super busy. The space was warm and inviting in addition to being very clean. The mood was definitely set with the lovely aesthetic. If you're looking for a slightly upscale sushi bar in Edgewater, you can officially stop looking. Indie is a great restaurant with excellent food, and plenty of indoor and outdoor dining. I would highly recommend people to visit Indie. And it's important to note that even if you don't like sushi, they have a ton of great noodle dishes!
This is The Best Thai & Japanese Restaurant I visit when I'm in the Edgewater Neighborhood. Everything is so Fresh!! Really nothing but enjoyable experience here. Yesterday, Monday about 1pm I was craving Sushi and I was in the area so I called to place the order. Hubs ordered the Indie Duo Don (Salmon & Tuna) His favorite! I had the V- Temp (Sweet Potato & Asparagus) I don't know what they do but it taste so crunchy and light. Also ordered the Fire Komodo Maki (soft Shell crab, cream cheese, cucumber topped with broiled eel) Everything just taste so good together. Last and not least I also had the Santa Fe Maki (shrimp Tempura, cucumber, lettuce, spicy mayo & Avocado) Perfect for a 1 bite! Seriously, Recommend to try this place if your in the Edgewater area.
Got pad Thai, Godzilla and dragon sushi. So so yammy, prices are good too. Definitely will be coming back a lot! Thank you so much! ❤️
I love Indie Cafe in the Edgewater neighborhood! We had both Thai and Japanese dishes, and everything was delicious. The tuna and salmon sashimi were super fresh and tasted amazing. The signature maki rolls were creative and full of flavor – you can really tell they put effort into making each one special. The place has a chic and friendly vibe, making it a great spot to relax and enjoy a meal. The staff is really nice and attentive, which adds to the overall great experience. If you're in the area, definitely check out Indie Cafe. It's a local gem that you’ll want to visit again and again. Highly recommend! ---
I don’t know how long Indie has been around but I’ve been going since 2001. The food is always spectacular and delicious! Tonight I asked who owned the restaurant. They pointed to a lady sitting in the back of the restaurant. I had no clue. In all my years, she has never visited my table to ask how things were. Doesn’t mean she hasn’t done that for other tables, but I’ve never seen anyone but the servers at my table and those around me. And while I find that odd and somewhat disappointing that she doesn’t care about her patrons in that way to visit, talk, and ask for feedback, I will still always go back because it is always solid. The Bang Bang Shrimp is amazing. The Crab Rangoon is unique and tasty (eat it there, not to go), and the Crispy Chili Heaven is out of this world! So many good things on the menu.
This is one of the best restaurants in Edgewater. I’ve literally eaten here 100 times since they opened years ago. Not one time was a disappointment. Friendly service, delicious food, beautiful plating, this is our go-to Thai/Japanese spot, gem for everyone.
Amazing food and services, people are very nice, 10/10 and highly recommended to bring your family and friends
This made for a good date night spot. We split the Chicken Gyozas which came in a dish perfect for two. We also ordered the Mexico City and Chicago Crazy rolls. Delicious but keep in mind they are kind of big rolls. 🍣 🥟 🍶
food and drinks were so good i forgot to take pictures. love the lunch special
Had a chance to try their new cocktails. It was amazing! We always have a great time here. Quality food and quality service! 🤎🤎🤎
Really surprised it doesn't have more reviews. It's absolutely delicious. I come here all the time. Never disappoint. Their crab Rangoon is fantastic!! Really like their basil noodles as well (shown).
Not only is the presentation beautiful each and every time but the food is consistantly delicious. I've been bringing friends and out of town guests to this little gem of a restaurant in Edgewater since it opened in 2004. Menu is so robust that you might have a difficult time choosing but everything is so good that you can't go wrong.
Great sushi+fun art pieces on walls. Their signature makis are definitely worth to try. My personal favorite is almond monkey. Ps: Did I tell you they make the best crab rangoon in Chicago?
Big,fresh and delicious fish fillets — so good I had to order them to enjoy at home
Awesome place. Favorite part was this Thai iced tea, always how I've enjoyed it. Service was wonderful the host and server were very sweet
I love this place! The quality of the food and the reasonable price brings me back again and again. I had the salmon with garlic fried rice and asparagus, look at the presentation!!
Great food, friendly staff, nice atmosphere. Will definitely go again.
Agedashi Tofu is a must here...best I have had anywhere. Their Maki and rolls are delicious and whimsical. Drunken Noodles and all fried rices are also great fresh or at 4am (speaking from experience). The menu is diverse, art is lovely, and the drinks menu had everything from champagne to peach jelly sake shots (which were *not* what I was expecting). In a week trip here we went 4 times. Try them out.
We're a Thai family living outside-Thailand and on a vacation in Chicago for two weeks. As we were dying for Pad Thai and Pad See eew, our usual comfort foods while on the go, Indie Cafe in Edgewater did not disappoint us. An easy hang-out in the neigborhood, the unpretentious atmosphere with local Chicagoan-touch comforted the far-away-from-home family like ours.
My 2nd time visiting this place. My friend and I specifically drove in from the suburbs for dinner here. The food is so good. Who knew miso soup could taste so good. I went with Drunken Noodles. My friend had a sushi roll. We both thought each of our meals were delicious. Dessert was also so delicious. I had the mango sorbet with passion fruit. It was so good. My friend had the custard w/sticky rice. Delicious. Drinks were great. A very decent wine and cocktail list that doesn't disappoint. This place mends Japanese and Thai for a fantastic meal. Atmosphere is warm, simple, and chic. A bit on the smaller side, so reserve as necessary The staff were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. I would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the North side of Chicago. Edgewater is the 'hood for good food experiences. I'm vegetarian and had plenty of options.
First time here! Got the no meat Raman and I’m impressed! Creating a hearty vegetarian broth is not easy. This broth is so satisfying! There’s some deep flavors like you’d expect with a beef broth and it lasts throughout the meal. Just a touch of heat that was perfectly placed right after the broth is tasted. Two types of tofu a skin which is sweet and a plain which goes so well with the other. And not forgetting the ramen noodles tasty perfectly cooked. Served is a deep ceramic bowl which kept everything warm. Beautiful presentation!
Food is AMAZING and the service is GREAT, all the people are so sweet! The serving time was so fast! I got my food within 5 minutes😍🤩. All the food was top quality in taste and the sushi was so fresh!!! 10/10 MUST VISIT and will DEFINITELY COME AGAIN!
Amazing food, great ambiance, and fantastic service. One of my favorite neighborhood spots!
The BEST sushi rolls Ive had in Chicago. I honestly didn’t expect it to be this good. Cause it doesn’t look like an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant. It’s better than Sushi San to be honest. Thumbs up 🩵 thanks to Jenny who made good special cocktails for me.
I always enjoy their food. Service is also great.
I've come here for over 6 years. It's a neighborhood staple. The impeccable service, delicious food and relaxed atmosphere are enjoyable after a hard day's work or for a weekend lunch. They make decent cocktails and have a tendency to refill your water frequently. I highly recommend this joint for any occasion especially if you are hungry and want a drink. Ramen is stellar and the sashimi beats others in the neighborhood for price and deliciousness factor. Cheers!
Sushi is fresh, other food and apps were tasty. Drinks were good. Service was fast and friendly. Great for dine in or takeout.
Been going to this place consistently since I moved to Thorndale in 2020. Amazing food and the staff members are very kind
I recently had the pleasure of dining at Indie Sushi Nouveau Asian, and I must say it was a great experience from start to finish. The atmosphere is welcoming, you can dress casually or opt for a more upscale look—making it a great spot for any occasion. The restaurant itself is nice and clean. Staff is friendly and attentive, ensuring that our needs were met throughout the meal without feeling rushed. As for the food, I had the Drunken Udon with seafood and it was delicious. Balancing great flavors with noodles having the perfect chewy texture. The sushi is also incredibly fresh, and you can tell it’s made with high-quality ingredients. The drink selection is reasonably priced, which was a pleasant surprise. I'd highly recommend the Ginger Meron, It’s refreshing and not overly sweet a definite must try! Overall, I can’t recommend Indie Sushi Nouveau Asian enough. Whether you're in the mood for a casual bite or a special night out, this spot delivers top-notch food, great service, and a cozy yet stylish atmosphere.
Another great place for Thai. Atmosphere is so unique. Service went the extra mile!
We had a fantastic dinner at Indy Café last night! My husband, a friend, and I started with the Grilled Chicken Sauté and Crab Rangoon, both of which were absolutely delicious. The Crab Rangoon was particularly impressive—unique and bursting with flavor. For sushi, we tried several of their signature maki rolls, including La Fiesta, Mexico City, Sex on the Moon, and Devil. Every roll was perfectly crafted, fresh, and incredibly tasty. The quality of the food exceeded our expectations, and the pricing was right in line with what you'd expect at a nice sushi restaurant. The atmosphere was lovely—inviting and cozy, perfect for a relaxed evening out. A special shoutout to our server, who was amazing! She was attentive and ensured everything was correct despite being the only server managing a very busy evening. It did take a bit longer to get our drinks, but given the circumstances, it was understandable. However, for her sake, they really should’ve had additional staff on hand to help out. Overall, Indy Café is a gem for sushi lovers, and we’ll definitely be back. Highly recommend!
Cross posted on yelp, too. We LOOOVE Indie!! We've lived in the neighborhood since 2019 and this is our tried, true, absolute favourite restaurant. The staff? So friendly! So attentive! The food? Not only delicious, high quality, and generously portioned but consistent over time in all of those same qualities. In 6 years we've eaten here regularly I cant think of a single bad experience we've ever had? This is our go-to for friends and family in town visiting. When we talk about moving, missing Indie is an actual concern. We love you, Indie Cafe :)
Delicious food and drinks and the service and atmosphere were both on point! I got the pad see ew and a sushi roll and everything was great. Can’t wait to go back!
The ambiance alone is wonderful. The staff, Maya and Polly, are always so welcoming and accommodating. They’re very knowledgeable about what’s served and are always willing to answer questions. I love when I come in and they immediately recognize me. I’ve noticed that they are this way with other customers that come in. The food is AMAZING!!!! I have never had a bad experience there. Authentic, delicious and inexpensive. The service I receive here is impeccable. My favorite place for Thai, sushi and wine!
The food is good, highly recommend the basil noodles. Maya is awesome, great service every time!
Indie cafe sushi + Thai really is a different experience. The ambiance really is nice it is very peaceful when you come in and sit down. The food is very good. I will recommend the chefs omakase really quality fish and you could taste how fresh it was.
The staff and food were excellent! Some of the best sushi around Chicago. I recommend the almond monkey roll. The only reason for the three stars regarding the atmosphere was because it felt a little crowded navigating around the sushi bar in the center of the restaurant to get to my table, and the artwork I find a little creepy yet compelling. But that's my opinion! Please come, eat, and form your own. Great place.
Good for the price. I got the poke bowl (B+) and crab rangoons (A). If you live in Edgewater you should check out Indie Bar. Would love to come back and try the Thai.
It was pretty good! The Tom ka kai soup has a really interesting flavor and tasted good on a cold night. The basil chicken entree was plenty to share and we had a nice night out!
I did a pick up order food for the Salmon Almond roll and it was good light sushi. I give 4 stars because it did not look like the picture ( which was why I ordered it) it looked very underwhelming and barely had any coconut. But overall all it was good sushi the lady who handed it to me was very nice and had a welcoming smile. I’ll probably come and dine in one of these days.
Had the devil and I'm always a fan of fried salmon skin, great drinks and there creme brulee was absolutely perfect to finish the meal, I have it rough during the winters and I ruminate over every word I've said and judge myself on merits of perceived accurate values in comparison to all of the things that can be done in life, but I think I have to accept the seasons of my heart
The food is good, but it has become way too pricey. These 5 MINI egg rolls were $9. 🙄
Great place if you’re going with friends and don’t care about personal space. Definitely not the spot for a date — unless you enjoy sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with strangers who can hear every word of your conversation. For some reason, they insist on packing everyone into one side of the restaurant while the other half sits empty. Maybe it saves them four steps? Service is fine, but don’t expect smiles — they match the seating: a little too close for comfort.
The Sunny Crunchy Roll was awful. Our server was too busy talking to someone at another table, and it got cold. Then she tried to feed me a line about deep fried rolls, Whatevah! My friend refused to order anything after that. Everything else was ok. Just didn’t like her attitude. I won’t be back.
The waitresses look miserable and I wonder why. I went to Indie after years I've been away and the food was alright, but overpriced. $7-9 for three Costco shrimp? C'mon, that's wild. Each make had five pieces with barely any flavor. And they were room temp. Um, what? They had our sushi sitting out for at least 20 minutes before they served it to us. For these prices, they should already know how to perform "made-to-order" and time it correctly. Then, as they serviced the sushi, the server knocked over the salad bowl and walked away. And then to top it all off, I undercut the tip for this bad service. Our waitress has the AUDACITY to come over and ask me why I did that and give me attitude. Right as I was about to tell her, she walked away scared. Excuse me? Yea, no. I'm never going back to this place again. The food was okay, but I've had better flavor and service in a hole-in-the-wall in Chinatown. They clearly don't want my business, so I'll take it elsewhere.
Your response clearly deflects from the main issue here, which is poor customer service. Instead of addressing the real concern, you’re making an assumption about personal issues. This kind of attitude speaks volumes about how you handle feedback, and it’s disappointing to see a business dismissing valid concerns by labeling them as personal conflicts. As a driver, I deserve the same respect and quality service as any other customer, and your attempt to shift the blame is both unprofessional and degrading. All customers, regardless of their role, deserve better. I had a terrible experience at this restaurant today. The waitress, whose name I couldn't catch, was incredibly rude, condescending, and unwelcoming. She clearly doesn't know how to treat customers. The whole atmosphere was uncomfortable, and the employees seemed to just be staring. That waitress definitely needs better training or should be replaced. I won't be coming back.
Booked a reservation for 2 tonight for Valentine’s day weeks in advance. despite having multiple nice tables available the host say my partner and I at the literally worst table available despite the reservation. 2 inches away from another couple who would not stop banging on the table to the drum beat of the music playing. waited several minutes with zero service. completely ruined our evening.
