Warm flavors in Costa Mesa's heart
Family-owned venue serving traditional Mexican fare such as pozole & tacos in a warm space.
Amorelia Mexican Cafe is well-regarded for its authentic Mexican cuisine, cozy atmosphere, and attentive service. Customers rave about the chilaquiles, cafe de olla, and margaritas. Some have noted inconsistent food quality or occasional service issues, but overall, it's a highly recommended spot.
Tip: Happy hour tacos are a good value. Be aware that chips may be charged separately when ordering guacamole.

I can’t believe this place has been open 16 years and I’ve only just found it. The food is so flavorful and great quality ingredients! The atmosphere is relaxing and I enjoy the music. Definitely one of my favorites now.
I came here randomly beacuse I was in the area . I was very impressed of the cozy atmosphere and warm service right when I walked in. The food is clean and delicious here. The Green Pozole is outstanding and the waitress with the blondish hair was very friendly. I definitely will come back
So Authentic! We wanted to try this nicely dressed up restaurant as it's well rated and after our trip to Yucatan we developed a craving for elevated Mexican food. Amorelia definitely delivered! Our hostess Fernanda was very personable, inquired on our questions instead of saying "I don't know". Kudos for that BIG time! Our enchiladas de mole verde, sopes, peppers on the side, all beautifully presented and delicious until the last bite. Yes, go ahead and mimic our order as it's a nice journey for your tastebuds. Lastly, we were lucky to visit on Thursday as there was live music from two gentlemen, "Los Dos".... very fitting in the whole theme. A bit hidden maybe but that's where the REAL gems reside. 5/5.
Amorelia is one of Costa Mesa's hidden gems. They've got lovely ambiance, lighting, music & decor. The food is incredible, you can taste the love in every bite. The one thing that wasn't great last night was when we ordered guacamole to start, they asked if we wanted to chips too and then charged us $5 for them. The guacamole does come with chips because they brought us two different kinds of chips in different baskets (one with the Guac and one came with a little dish of salsa. This seemed a little shifty on their part & it's worth being aware of. Otherwise, a beautiful experience here as always.
Three of us came in on a Tuesday around 5. The restaurant is welcoming semi rustic. There are TVs, so I got to watch the Angels game. There was 1 person at the bar and a couple at another table, Our server was nice and attentive. We each got the happy hour tacos 3 for $10. We also ordered chips and salsa. We each got 2 margaritas. We enjoyed everything. Great deals for Happy Hour. I would recommend.
Amorelia Mexican Cafe makes a strong effort at providing a fine dining experience. But when the headlights of cars parking right outside the all glass front wall come glaring in, it leaves something to be desired. I travel a lot for business and am always looking for unique dining experiences. Amorelia was a generally good one. The host/bartender was a little too eager, calling me "my friend" at least three times in the first few minutes. But I'd much rather have too friendly than brusque or non-existent. They have a full bar and their drinks looked good. I had a draft beer. For dinner I opted for the Enchiladas Suizas - shredded chicken enchiladas with a tomatillo sauce. Two hazards here - the chicken can be overcooked and dry and the tomatillo can be too sour. Neither was the case tonight. The chicken was moist and flavorful and the tomatillo was among the best I've had. Really nice. The rice that came with it was much better than average, but the refried beans did their best to counter that. Had they served properly made frijoles de la olla (beans in a pot) they might have earned that fifth star. There are plenty of taco shops within easy driving range where the same meal could be had for half the price. Let's face it, some dive taco shops (of which there are many in Southern California), are very good. Many entrees at Amorelia run in the mid- to high-$20 range. And it's small, but more cramped than cozy. Put up some screens to make it less strip mall, and up your bean game and I might be back.
A fantastic and authentic Mexican restaurant in the Costa Mesa area. Along side a quaint atmosphere/decor is a friendly service. You're welcomed with some homemade tortilla chips still warm from being made. The mains are delicious with just the right level of spice, I went with the steak fajitas myself. Be sure to save room for desert, whether churos, flan or tres leches. All very reasonably priced I'd definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for a family friendly (highchairs available) Mexican restaurant.
The food is tasty and made with fresh ingredients, the portions are big and the plate presentation is pretty. My only suggestion is to improve the quality of the tortillas or better yet to have hand made tortillas. Their staff is friendly and attentive and the place is clean and decorated nicely. Great ambiance.
My wife and I stopped in for a date night dinner. We love the ambiance in this restaurant, how it's tucked away in this plaza. The shrimp amorelia was such a delight. It was the hit of the night. Not overly seasoned and just the right amount of toppings. The kitchen doesn't allow for any menu changes at all, which is my reason for marking them down a star. We both ordered entrees, and I wanted to try a red enchilada, and it was "buy a whole plate or no." I couldn't just add an enchilada, which was disappointing. Service was okay. Ordering from a screen would be a similar comparison. I had the chille relleno plate, which comes with one relleno, rice, and beans. I could have enjoyed two and the enchilada I wanted but resigned to one relleno. I wasn't about to pay 40 bucks for 2 whole plates just to get two chilles. We enjoyed the coconut flan for dessert, which was good. Overall, we enjoyed the food. I was still hungry when I left. My entree left me wanting more, and I cleaned that plate.
We were having dinner on 1-30-2026 and the appetizer we ordered was good. While we were eating a man came to our table and asked if he could sit down at the table. I asked if he was the owner and he said no he was the investor for the restaurant and I said join us. I noticed he had been drinking. The conversation started cordial and then suddenly he start using obscenities towards me and calling me names and wanted to fight me and then he started on my girlfriend and started insulting her. We did not provoke him, we were just listening. I asked the waiter to come and make him leave our table and he started using obscenities toward us again. My girlfriend got scared and was shaken and was afraid what he was going to do to us. We decided to leave and left the restaurant. He was still there after we left. I would think the manager would ask him to leave but he didn't and I guess because he was an investor for the restaurant. The restaurant never apologized to us for guy behavior. We will never go back. I will not recommend for anyone to go there because of the incident and also I don't want anyone to experience what we went through.
I came to this restaurant this morning 10/18/25 with my two kids for breakfast while we waited nearby for a haircut. Sadly, the experience was disappointing from start to finish. Our server — a man in his 40s — was unfriendly and disengaged. He took our order (I ordered huevos rancheros with sunny-side-up eggs), and that was the last we saw of him. He never returned to check on us, until we were almost done. The food was average at best and didn’t meet expectations. What truly crossed the line was how the payment was handled. I paid in cash, and while we were still seated and my kids were still eating, the server took the money and helped himself to a tip, all without saying a word. There was no mention of a gratuity on the receipt, and he never asked if I wanted change or told me he was keeping part of the payment. It was done silently and without permission. I would have gladly left a tip if I had been asked or if the service had deserved one. But taking money without consent is dishonest and unprofessional. It shows a complete lack of respect for the customer. I won’t be returning, and I don’t recommend this restaurant to anyone who expects basic courtesy, transparency, or integrity.
I decided to take my young daughter here on 9/22/25 around 1pm for a nice lunch to celebrate her passing her dmv driving test and obtaining her license since we have been here before and had a pleasant experience years prior; there was a server Hispanic woman early thirties that attended us and took our order. What I did not like was the food took long to get to our table from the time we placed the order to the time we actually got the food on our table was a 45 minute timeframe seems excessive. Then when we finally got our food I had asked for the sauce on the side not on the salmon and it just seemed like every little thing I had to be reminding the waitress about and before i could finish asking what I needed she walked away so I had to ask for one thing at time instead of her staying there and just listen and bring everything at once I think it would have been much easier for everyone for example this is what she did… fork?… walks away! Condiments?… walks away! Salt and pepper?…. Walks away! Another drink?… walks away! Where is the sauce on the side?… walk’s away! Like lady stay listen or yourself be considerate and reasonable enough to bring us cutlery like basics! To top it all off as soon as I was about half way eating I began to feel very ill I had to walk out and leave my daughter there alone to pay the food made me sick. Then I look at the transaction we where charged $88 for 2 meals and 2 drinks wow 🤯 nope never again -5 stars👎
I've been coming to this place for years but this might be my last visit. Not sure if the recipes are different or they got a different cook but things simply don't taste the same. Even back then the food was sometimes good and sometimes not as much. This time though, i didn't even finish my plate. Two other people in my party echo the same sentiment, our tampiqueña was below subpar. The meat was chewy, flavorless and full of nerves. Didn't bother finishing my steak and i actually spat out two pieces. The enchilada gets worse every time i order this dish. Might as well call it a taco with a spray of salsa on top. Server forgot to bring us steak knives, never asked us what tortillas we wanted for our plates and actually challenged my party when we said he didn't bring the right kind. Also not a fan of them taking away refills for their drinks. You'd think they'd throw us a bone with the prices they charge for their food. They've also begun charging for their chips and salsa. Lastly they no longer play old, classical music here. I used to love the ambience but they were blasting regueton, which was definitely a mood killer. Anyways, every time we come here we say "let's give them a few months then come back and see if they improved". I don't think I'm going to bother anymore.
