What a wonderful evening we had here. Took our daughter out for her 25th birthday and could not have been happier with her pick of an Italian place. Although the food is supposed to be the star of a restaurant, and believe me the Alfredo did indeed shine, it was our server that stole the show. Incredibly polite, went out of her way to ensure there was time to chat between courses, made a perfect suggestion for a dessert and best just was a pleasant person to have help us with our evening. Thank you.

**OLDEST RESTAURANT IN DETROIT** The gentleman at the bar–K.J's recommendation made the decision making a lot easier. The food was basically a flavor festival Incredibly delicious K.J also made the meanest old fashioned ever! WOW

First thing of note, there is parking behind the building. When we walked in we were greeted by “grandma” and she was very sweet. There was also a guy welcoming people at the door and this dude is the king of not rolling his eyes. I am at a table where I can see and sort of hear a lot of the people checking in. Oh you’re a family of 12 on Saturday night with no reservation? Let’s go! For real, he made it work somehow. “Oh hi we have a reservation” “Fantastic! Name?” “Oh we’re an hour early” And this guy just rolls with it like a prize fighter. “You’re table is ready” “Oh cool, just let us finish our drinks real slow and casually” All of the staff is very nice and the food is very good but the show of watching people who apparently have never been to a restaurant check in was just amazing.

If you're in the mood for a timeless Detroit dining experience that balances charm, flavor, and hospitality, Amore de Roma delivers. Nestled in the historic Eastern Market district, this restaurant is a throwback in all the right ways. From the vintage décor and cozy ambiance to the welcoming staff who treat you like family, the vibe is old-school, warm, and full of character. We started with the calamari, which was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. It came with a side of marinara that had a fresh, herby kick—definitely made in-house. For the main course, we chose the seafood pasta, a generous plate loaded with mussels, shrimp, and scallops, all soaked in a rich tomato garlic sauce that tasted like it came straight out of Nonna’s kitchen. The pasta was cooked just right, and the seafood was fresh and flavorful. Service was impressive—friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable without being overbearing. The staff moved efficiently and made sure water glasses stayed full and needs were met without needing to be asked twice. The restaurant is quaint, and while the atmosphere is charming, the restrooms are comically tiny—worth a chuckle, but definitely a tight squeeze. That said, it’s a small price to pay for the overall experience. Portions are satisfying, prices are fair, and there’s plenty of parking, which is a rarity in the area and a huge plus. Whether you're looking for a romantic dinner or a comforting Italian meal with friends, Amore de Roma is a solid bet. Final verdict: Great food, great service, classic atmosphere. Just don’t expect a spacious bathroom. Highly recommend.

Fantastic atmosphere, food and service. Keith the manager took care of our group of 17 people and made sure every detail was taken care of. The food was top notch from pasta to desert.

Our original venue for engagement fell through and Amore stepped up! They were kind and put on a love song for the proposal. Kind service, food was fantastic, my whole family including the New Yorkers loved it :)

Decided to check out the oldest restaurant in Detroit, Amore Da Roma. We made reservations for 6pm although we were running a little late due to weather and poor planning on our end. They were super understanding and assured us it was not a problem. The service here is absolutely outstanding! I could not have asked for better hospitality, and Tommy was our amazing server. Everyone here makes you feel so welcome and at home. Walking in you feel like you stepped back in time. It was simple and cozy. You can’t go wrong with any of their cocktails, I had a Manhattan, and everyone including myself enjoyed their drinks. Prior to our entrees, we all started off with some of the best Minestrone and Roasted Red Pepper Soup I’ve ever had personally. I decided on the Filet Minion cooked rare, the Lamb Chops cooked medium and Parmesan Encrusted Salmon were ordered by the two next to me which made it very easy to sneak a bite or two of each. The Filet was cooked perfectly, and was solid. No complaints here. The Lamb Chops that my friend ordered medium ended up coming out well done. Our waiter Tommy gave no fuss about it and brought out a new order which was then cooked perfectly, and was delicious! Things happen and hopefully someone in the kitchen got to enjoy the previous plate. The Salmon was huge and very delicious as well. Ordered but not pictured are the Lasagna and Veal Parmesan. Those were the two that really stole the show. The Lasagna was so so so cheesy and the red sauce was to die for! The Veal Parmesan will more than likely be my order next time, absolutely outstanding. We all got a side of Fettuccine Alfredo which was also some of the best I’ve had. It was safe to say we were all way too full for dessert, starting off with a generous serving of complimentary bread and butter is just as much a blessing as it is a curse. Overall between the history, the service, and the food, this place will definitely be added on to rotation. Thank you so much Amore Da Roma for an amazing night!

Went to Eastern market today and saw this spot on Google search for a place to eat for lunch and decided to try it. Service, food and people were all super awesome. The place has an old world feel to it. I will definitely come back!

Great history and food to match. Wait staff open to share the proud history serving since 1890 Detroit history right in Eastern Market. The Tiramsu was light and very pleasing without being heavy a great finish to any entrée. The homemade cabbage soup delicious. All the pasta you can't go wrong with. Stop in if you have a chance.

This is an amazing and nostalgic resteraunt with upscale authentic Italian cuisine. The server was amazing and accommodated our requests to give us the history of the location and describe all the famous people who frequent the establishment. She also took our pictures, which was nice and will help in remembering this experience. The food quality/taste and service were superb!

I loved it here. Classy yet casual and cozy. I love the bar area. There are also two separate dining rooms. Fabulous food! We had the minestrone, Italian Wedding and roasted red pepper soups. All are fantastic . For main courses we love the veal marsala, scallapini artichoke chicken, spaghetti with meat sauce and pasta with marinara. Great bread and wine too. If you save room for dessert, the tiramisu and lemon torte are delicious. The wait staff was attentive and fun. I can't wait to go back.

My father in law was a chef there back in the day for 30+ years. Meal was fabulous. Its sad that not many people were in there. Should advertise more to get more patrons into this historical resturant.

Thrilled we decided to stop for lunch at this restaurant after a long morning exploring Detroit downtown ending at Eastern Market. Our server and bartender Jeff took great care of us and went out of his way to make us feel at home. It felt like we were invited to someone’s house for dinner! We had the House made Fettuccine with mushroom & meat sauce, Chicken Parmigiana (with a side of spaghetti), baked Lasagna and a couple Frankenmuth old Detroit Amber beers. Great food, incredible service & ambiance made our lunch a very memorable one!!

This restaurant is very nice. The ambience in this restaurant is amazing. The bar tender is very nice his name is Mat. There is a waitress named Steven and he is very nice. 😊 I had a shrimp 🍤 and chicken 🍗 Alfredo. The noodles were fresh and made in house. 🫶🏾

Denise was an EXCELLENT server. Was knowledgeable & kind. Will be back! The eggplant parmigiana was delicious. Paired well with the chianti i ordered at her recommendation. I also love how this place adds to the deep history of Detroit.

We went here for a meal after seeing a show at the Fisher with a large group. I was really pleased with the food and our server Sam was so sweet, along with the staff supporting him. You have to have the tiramisu!

My first visit to this amazing restaurant! I started with an appetizer of the most outstanding Italian sausage in a base of peppers and tomatoes. Then, a cup of lovely house minestrone. A side salad with olive oil and vinegar. And, as the main course and for old times' sake, spaghetti with meatballs. Ambiance was delightful, being surrounded by historic architecture and decor with the likes of Etta James and Frank Sinatra in the background. It was simply exquisite!

Customer service was a 10/10. This restaurant is in an extremely old building, looks old from the outside too however well maintained inside and parking in the rear. There are various dining areas and a bar as well. The food is really good, and the atmosphere is really nice too. Definitely recommend this place if you are in the Detroit area.

Bon Appetit! The minestrone soup was absolutely delicious; just like I remembered it years ago. The Roma Tossed Salad? Need I say more. Perfectly dressed greens with the chopped hard boiled egg. And the grand finale....the tiramisu cake. When our waiter said it was the best, I was so glad I listened. So good and light. The presentation was lovely! Can't wait to go back!

Excellent food and service at Amore Da Roma. We had Dave as our server he was very attentive and kind. Our water glasses keep getting refilled by other servers, and our plates got cleared in a timely manner.

Located in Eastern Market, Amore De Roma is an excellent go-to spot for Italian. We went for a Valentines day dinner and will definitely be back. For a twist on the usual Greektown sagnaki, try their Italian Saganaki - sliced italian sausage with roasted garlic and basil in provolone cheese. Great starter! The Kentucky Kiss was a tasty bourbon drink with strawberries and a hint of maple syrup. I was a little apprehensive the drink would be too sweet but it was excellent. Their Roma salad was well dressed and had egg, chick peas and red pepper mixed with the romaine. A nice variation to typical italian dinner salads. The highlight was the chicken scallopine piccante! An excellent chicken piccante that had a nice kick with red pepper flakes in the chicken. Definitely try the chocolate cake for dessert! The inner filling was like eating layers of light fudge. Overall, Amore da Roma is a great reason to visit Eastern Market and try a great italian restaurant. We'll be back!

Highly recommend this to anyone! Came in from Indy and was such a great experience from the food to the customer service. Best authentic Italian I have had in a long time. Also, the desserts are amazing!

The food was good, the wait staff was very kind. I really wanted to reach out to the Cook. I read he was the new owner and the story on the menu intrigued me. I hope this hidden gem flourishes. It has so many delicious platters. I was blown away by all the parking in their private lot. I drove by so many times and thought to myself that they must be closed and the whole time the parking is located behind the building.

Amore de Roma – Detroit Review (9.5/10) Amore de Roma is one of those rare Detroit institutions that feels as if time pauses the moment you walk through the door. Open since the 1800s, the restaurant carries its history in every detail – the warm glow of the dining room, the easy hospitality, the sense that generations have gathered here for meals that linger in memory. On this visit, the standouts were the eggplant parmesan and the garlic green beans. The eggplant was layered perfectly: tender without being mushy, well-seasoned, and covered in a sauce that struck the ideal balance between bright and hearty. The garlic green beans were a surprise favorite – crisp, flavorful, and seasoned in a way that elevated a simple side into something you want an entire bowl of. Service was friendly, unhurried, and true to the classic Detroit Italian spirit. You feel taken care of, not rushed. Overall, I’d give Amore de Roma a 9.5/10. It’s the kind of place you’re grateful still exists – historic, consistent, and deeply satisfying. I’ll definitely be back.

Great food, compliments to the chef! Our server Cecilia (CC), was absolutely delightful. Service was excellent. Compliments to all staff. Everyone was so happy and kind. 9 ounce beef tenderloin that melted in your mouth, classic minestrone, salad, best escargot I ever ate and angel hair pasta with sautéed spinach. What an exceptional way to begin the Christmas holiday! So happy! Luv this restaurant… Arrived at 4 PM. Room was a bit chilly… I was looking for a few more Christmas decorations.

I chose this restaurant by chance after a long day at the DIA. Pulled up and immediately loved the old brick building and spacious parking spot in the back lot. The staff was kind and relaxed, yet urgent and carried themselves with elegance and class. As a vegetarian, I found myself have many options. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo. It came with bread and a soup, delivered to our table in great timing. This Alfredo was so flawless and perfect that I ate the entire bowl in under 7 minutes. I think about that bowl daily and everyday I yearn to eat here. Don't skip out!!!

Building is 129 years old and you can feel it as you enter and setting inside does take you back in time. Staff is very friendly and really enjoyed their service and food. Huge portion sizes and really liked their seafood pasta with Alfredo sauce, Italian sausage was something new for us, cooked with bell peppers and lamb chops were pretty good as well. I would recommend going here.

Was a mixed bag when it came to food. The alfredo fettuccine and mushroom ravioli were fantastic but the lamb chops and shrimp scampi ended up being bland. Service was quick and great.

Service was top notch and the food was good, except my dessert. Absolutely no complaints about the pasta - I had cannelloni that was really quite tasty. Everyone else at the table enjoyed their dinners. The desserts all seem to be cheesecake-based, which is not what I had in mind with tiramisu. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't what I had in mind/wanted. Prices were really reasonable. It was a bit loud because of a large party in the same room with us, but it wasn't too much to handle. Our server was on top of everything and she was a lot of fun to interact with throughout dinner.

This is the old Roma Cafe. Same old restaurant and building. Private parking lot is located in the back of the restaurant. It’s located next to a fire station, here in Eastern market. They must’ve been doing a fire exercise, as there were quite a few fire men and women all around, as well as a bunch of trucks. There is a small bar and eating area on the ground level. There’s several separate dining areas, some additional space upstairs as well. The women’s bathroom is on the second floor. Was here ages ago. It’s been around for l a really long time. Ordered calamari, Roma 2 tossed salad with broiled chicken, scallopine limone, paglia & fieno Italian sausage sandwich, ravioli, gnocchi. They don’t allow you to split a bill for parties of 5 or more. Makes it harder for work colleagues. :( Food was all decent. Our waiter was attentive.

M
Misty

I had an okay experience. The place felt a bit crowded in terms of seating. The fettuccine noodles were GREAT but the salmon ruined the dish. It didn't taste like it was cooked with any seasoning. The tiramisu (shaped like a pie slice) wasn't very good either. I also didn't like the 20% on a table of 3 people.

K
Kevin Marrical

The food was outstanding. I unfortunately had the seafood linguine which was $36. I have no issue with paying for a dish that delivers. This dish fell very short 5 pieces of shrimp - ok, but 2 calamari rings? And my favorite... pencil eraser size scallops. Couldn't see them at first as there were only 5or 6. Ordered scallops and rice from another restaurant recently and marveled at the large bay scallops...about 15 to twenty. $18. One and done at Amore da Roma

Came here with my family on a late Friday afternoon - 4pm. Let me start by saying our friendly server, Grace, was super awesome. She was also the bartender! When we stepped in, the host said he couldn’t seat us until 730pm. Let me remind you we came in at 4pm. We were directed to check the bar area. Sure enough, there was a small table in the corner of the bar. On our way walking up to the restaurant, I’m guessing there were a total of 4-6 cars. Makes sense at 4pm. My wife and I (and 3 kids) debated if we should just drive back to Woodward to grab dinner, but we were good sports, mainly due to the fact that Grace was so friendly. We started with the Italian saganaki served with crusty and warm bread. Great combination of sausage, herbs and cheese. Anytime I see Puttanesca, I will consider ordering it. If you’re a fan of this low key dish, it’s worth the try. Flavors were on point. The olives and pepper flavors were nicely done. My daughter didn’t know what to get, so I suggested the white fish. I don’t recommend this at all. She told me it wasn’t good, and was surprised. I tasted it. 🫤 Zero flavor…adding salt to it didn’t help. I started to add the butter from our bread onto the fish for her but that didn’t work out. Oh well. My son had probably the best tasting dish out of all of us: HOUSE MADE PAGLIA & FIENO. Very creamy and flavorful. Meat sauce pasta was decent. Chicken parm was average. Wait staff: 6 stars Food: 3 stars. Idk. Honestly wouldn’t go back. I did have fond memories back in the day when we would come here for work lunches. Circa 2001-2002. Host : 2 stars. He could have been more friendlier but passed us off. There was a lady besides him where I felt she was confused too. During our dinner at the bar, he sat at the bar with his phone. You tell me if that was a sign of a busy restaurant who couldn’t sit us at 4pm in the dining room.

R
Rebecca Taschler

It's an old place, so you get that smell when you first walk in, which I find unpleasant. The host was very pleasant and seated us without our whole group being there. The waiters looked understaffed so she was rushed and made some errors that was also reflected on the bill. Food was good, but not amazing.

M
MiNa Kim

Took my elderly mother out to dinner, and the waiter immediately had an attitude when we didn’t order alcohol. Had to flag him down to order, no drink refills, generally ignored. The food wasn’t bad, we really enjoyed their calamari. The restaurant has a rustic vibe and it could be great. You can see that the servers are generally aiming for a high end service vibe but unfortunately I wasn’t able to experience that.

B
BRS

Not impressive. One of the worst meals out that we've had in a long time. The wine selection was interesting. The soup was warm, not hot. The salad was great. The mushroom ravioli special had great flavor, but cold-the timing of the entrees to bring out at the same time was wrong. The chicken on the chicken alfredo tasted old. We weren't asked if we wanted a dessert course. We don't have to come back.

D
Derek Trent

I went to this restaurant a couple of nights ago with friends and the atmosphere was good and all, however, i was very disappointed in the food. We had ordered appetizers that was not so good or flavorful. The fettuccine alfredo that i had was not tasty or flavorful. I and others who were at the table with me had food poisoning the next day also. The best part of this dinner was with friends and the blonde hair girl who was a very good waitress to be honest. However, it seem that the food was rushed than cooked with love. I would give this place another try but i will determine that if i go again.

We had a reservation for 4. We were excited to be dining at the oldest Italian restaurant in Detroit. We were greeted by a friendly host whose demeanor changed to frantic when it was revealed that a table was not reserved for us. The restaurant had many diners but it was not filled. We were seated at a table that was wedged in a corner and a doorway opening into another room. Our waitress, although friendly, did not know the menu. We looked to see that other patrons were offered salad and we were not. Our water glasses had to be requested to be filled several times. We politely asked the waitress to remove dishes from appetizers to make room for our entrees because the size of our table. The Italian dishes we were excited to try because of the reputation and online reviews were lacking in homemade appeal. The tomato sauce tasted from a can. The meat sauce had a dull flavor with no noticeable spices. The seafood in the seafood pasta did not taste or appear fresh but from cans and frozen. The dish was served lukewarm. We were surprised that fresh Parmesan and fresh pepper was not part of the ambience giving this establishment has been a working restaurant for 137years. Moreover, a different waitress came to our table asking if she could have the Parmesan cheese in the glass shaker for another table. The 4 desserts were generous but were not homemade. The strawberry cheesecake had a thin strawberry sauce drizzled on top and no strawberries. We always support local dining and restaurants rich in history. We can say we have dined at Roma’s in Detroit but we will not be returning to Roma’s nor will we bring out of town guests.

J

I wanna start off by saying I’m a really easygoing person- and rarely leave a bad review. BUT 35$ for this “vodka” pasta is a crime. Sauce tasted like shrimp water. It was so watery. I ate it because I paid for it, but it was really bad. I understand on a busy night service can slightly go down- but this was really unsettling. Beautiful Resteraunt, but I will never eat here again. Again, I rarely leave a bad review- but the pasta was that bad :/ others seemed to be enjoying their food but I would skip this special pasta!

T
Tia Pettygrue

Let me start by saying the food was good. Where it went downhill was when we received the bill (which is the only reason I give one star). There were 4 of us. Two ordered the Shrimp Scampi. On the first page of the menu, it lists appetizers on the left size, then Dinner Menu on the right side. My two friends ordered the Shrimp Scampi from the first page (see picture). It was listed as $22. Our server NEVER asked them if they wanted the appetizer or dinner portion. Based on the menu, what they selected was "Dinner". However, when the bill came, they were charged $37 for the dish instead of $22. When they asked the server, he said he brought them the dinner portion that was inside the menu (vs. the first page). They hadn't noticed the one inside the menu. I'm showing this part of the menu so you can see what they were ordering. They even asked for a manager, who just said they ordered the dinner portion. They just ordered Shrimp Scampi from the first page, not knowing there were different portions. Good customer service would have been for the server or manager to say "I can see how that could have been confusing, and we'll only charge you for the appetizer portion." But they did not, didn't discount it at all, and the manager was not very nice. So if you decide to eat here, make sure you specify appetizer or dinner portion so you are not overcharged. I would not go back or recommend.

After being a fan and good customer in the past, I decided to bring a group of 9 for lunch for the famous Roma Salads. To my surprise, some of the salads were very small and some were moderate in size. When I spoke with the server, he just skimmed over my concerns and did not address it. I will never patronize this business again.

I have been to this old Italian restaurant in Detroit probably 20 times in the last several years. The veal in the past has been very good. This evening it was dry. Like it had been frozen and taken out and thawed improperly. It had little taste. The marsala sauce was fine. When I brought it to the attention of the waiter he brought in the apparent manager who basically insulted me, questioning my reaction to the poor quality of the veal. I told him to take it away. There was no offer to do any kind of adjustment, any kind of substitution. And at that point I didn’t want any further response from them. I simply let them know on departing that I would never ever be in this restaurant again after enjoying a lot of good experiences here. This place has gone way downhill. I suggest all stay away to avoid the poor experience I had.

Food was disgusting! Service was Horrendous! Amy was the only kind soul in that place. Save yourself the trouble and go to Giovanni’s Restaurante if you’re looking for good rustic Italian in Detroit.

I made a reservation for 4 people on October 21st for my birthday on October 31st, at 8:30 pm. I made the reservation online. On the 31st, I was getting ready and received a call at 7:07 pm stating that they weren't busy and were closing early due to people Trick R treating. The lady asked us to "Come soon" I was really upset because it was my 50th birthday and was really excited to try this restaurant. I had 2 people driving 45 min to get there. I let her know and she really didn't seem to care. We had to find a different restaurant last minute. I really think I should have gotten a call way sooner. This was a special occasion that I was looking forward to. Apparently, they didn't want our business!

We tried to go to this establishment for dinner, there were 2 other cars in the parking lot, 3 parked out front and they claimed they had no available tables. It was 4:45 p.m.. Although the gentleman at the host stand was very nice, the woman standing next to him was far from welcoming.

I loved our servers at Roma, but I’m disappointed with management. I brought a $50 Roma gift card we received as a gift and was told it couldn’t be accepted due to a redesign/age despite it being the reason we chose to come. The manager was irritated when we asked for a small item to be removed from our bill. If you’re thinking of buying a gift card here, I’d double-check the policy first, although it had been less than two years and Michigan laws online says otherwise. …Thank you for responding! I appreciate that you offered an appetizer, but under Michigan’s Gift Card and Gift Certificate Act, businesses are required to honor valid gift cards regardless of POS system changes. The card was issued by your restaurant and still had a balance, so I just wanted to clarify that for other customers. I hope future guests don’t run into the same issue.

THREE STRIKES YOU'RE OUT!! Once again, my team met for a dinner meeting here. Party of 5 for a business dinner with web designer. A quiet table advance request was not honored. I ordered the Roma House Salad with grilled salmon, specifically asking for "dressing on the side." When it came, the salmon was cold, the "salad" which was mainly limp iceberg lettuce & diced tomatoes past their prime, was SWIMMING in Italian dressing. In paying my portion of the bill, I was charged a 3% credit card fee for the *entire bill,* not my share.
