We got four meals between us and each one was absolutely outstanding. It’s the best chicken fried steak I’ve had in my life. The owner and her son and granddaughter were all gems and so fun to chat with. This is a can’t miss stop in Truckee!!
Food wise, I the breakfast croissant and everything was in point. But the best was for sure the service and the atmosphere. Really recommend this place
A Must-Stop Gem in Truckee! If you are driving into North Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake Kitchen is the perfect pit stop. It's located right next to the lake, making it a super convenient and scenic spot to stretch your legs and grab a bite. The Experience We arrived on a Friday afternoon and, despite it being a busy time, we only had a 10-minute wait before being seated. It's a family-owned spot, and you can really feel that warmth in the service--the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. We absolutely loved the relaxed, local vibe of the place. The Food The portions here are generous and the flavors are spot on. Here is what we tried: * The Turkey Melt: My wife ordered this and it was massive! It came on perfectly grilled sourdough with cheddar, grilled onions, turkey, bacon, and avocado. She paired it with a fresh side salad and said the sandwich was amazing. * The Tuna Melt (with a twist): I went for the tuna melt on grilled sourdough with jack cheese, tomatoes, and--the best part--jalapeños and grilled onions. It was a fantastic twist on a classic. I got the sweet potato fries on the side; they gave me a huge portion and they were delicious. * "San Julian Style" Chicken Tacos: My son got these and was really happy with his dish. You get three corn tortillas filled with chicken cooked in their homemade salsa, topped with lettuce, tomato, and avocado. They serve them with salsa and sour cream on the side--definitely a hit! Verdict We definitely recommend this place! Between the tasty food, the friendly atmosphere, and the prime location right by the water, it's easily one of our favorite finds in the area. We will definitely be back. Tip: If you're heading toward the slopes or the lake, don't just drive by--pull over and eat here!
We went on a Tuesday thinking it would be mellow. They were absolutely packed. I think there was two servers and one cook and every table seated and 10 people waiting to be seated. It took a while to seat and to get our food but you could read the room so it didnt bother us. All the staff was smiling friendly and the service was great. They did a great job.
Ten stars! The juevos ranchers half portion with chorizo was probably the best thing I've ever eaten in my life. The owner and her son were so friendly. The cook has worked there for 30 years. You cannot pass this place up if you are in the area.
Cozy restaurant located across the street from Donner Lake, serving delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. The Famous Huevos Rancheros was definitely the star, and the Country Breakfast Skillet was also perfectly seasoned and cooked. There are so many other items that we want to try, so we will definitely be back! Friendly and efficient service. Small parking lot, so it might be hard to find parking during the peak meal hours.
DLK is our favorite breakfast place. It’s incredible how consistently amazing this place is. Not only the food but the service as well. Shout out to Peter for always having a smile on his face, even when it’s packed. 10/10 DLK!
One spot left at the bar with the previous guests plates still there. Host sat me down there and cleaned the spot right away. I remarked that its a good sign that the plates were empty. Sure enough I finished mine completely too. Absolutely delicious.
My favorite breakfast place in the area. The servers and hosts are friendly and helpful. We got there at 9:30 and there was already a 20 minute wait. By 10AM the wait was almost an hour. You can ask to sit the bar, if they have space, and you can order drinks while you wait. The food was tasty and felt homemade. The Cowboy’s Breakfast was delicious! The biscuits were soft and fluffy, the gravy was not to thick and the sausage patty was so flavorful. The Pancake Breakfast (#6) was good, too. Large and fluffy pancakes.
If you’re in Reno, find any reason to visit Donner Lake Kitchen. Place runs like symphony. All smiles, super chill atmosphere and the food is tight. Hungry portions to be sure. Jama, my server, is a local outdoor go to person. Life hack, hit the mountain trail before breakfast. Have fun!
Stopped by for lunch here on the way back from the sierras and was so happy to have found it. Prices were reasonable for the size and everything was very flavorful. Beware, portions are HUGE. I loved the energy inside, lots of returning locals which is always a good sign. Would 100% recommend it!
Came here early on a Saturday morning, had some great food and everyone was really nice! The bacon and sweet potato fries were real standouts, perfectly balanced and cooked. My sister enjoyed the virgin Bloody Mary and the OJ tasted fresh. The pancakes were crazy huge and fluffy, everything was great!
This took over for me and my fiancé’s favorite breakfast spot. I got the half order of huevos rancheros with chorizo. Couldn’t finish it, it was such a big portion. Absolutely delicious. My fiancé raved about the chilaquiles special. It was the perfect breakfast. Service was great, very quick. Bathrooms were clean. Visiting from out of town but I’d definitely reccomend to others coming by!
Super friendly place that serves excellent diner food with an amazing amount of options. If you were ever to imagine the most idyllic diner w the friendliest of staff that serve the best Bloody Mary’s or Mimosa, it’s Donner Lake Kitchen. Long before arriving to Lake Tahoe, this place kept popping up in our searches for a quick bite, this place that legendary. The entire place has a “you’re family” vibe, literally we felt at home. We had the French dip sandwich, excellent, the DK something Sammy, TASTY and paired it w sides of polish sausage and sausage Pattie’s, chargrilled to PERFECTION. This is what this country is about. Friendly faces serving home made food making you feel like you’re family. I love this place!
I got the chilaquiles which were amazing. My husband got the cowboy breakfast and the biscuits and gravy were great! Portions are generous. They only have drip coffee and it’s not that great, but it worked. My biggest complaint is that the service sucks. Everyone who helped us looked like they hated being there, and service was SO SLOW. like, I got bored just waiting for someone to come back. Our time here felt like it dragged cus we were ready to go. We had a party of 8, so they already added gratuity to the check but honestly, isn’t gratuity based on the quality of service provided? Seemed presumptuous of them to tip themselves so well when the service was so poor. So yes, great food, but cus of the crap service, I probably wouldn’t come back.
The ambiance of this place is undeniably cool, exuding a creative and artistic vibe. What's more, it's impeccably clean, which is always a plus. The servers, while very friendly, did leave us waiting a bit longer than expected. Overall, the service was good, with just a minor hiccup in terms of speed. While my friends thoroughly enjoyed their food, I, unfortunately, did not share the same sentiment. I opted for the grande quesadilla and found it to be rather tasteless. In hindsight, I wish I had chosen a sandwich instead
We stop here on our way to Tahoe , great place we did waited for a bit, it wasn't bad we got there right before lunch we got a table ordered our food the atmosphere is fabulous and cozy, small restaurant it gives mom & pop vibes! Love it, the food arrived all together and the burger was good , I got the biscuits and gravi, and everything was delicious and the portions were pretty good. 👍
Donna Lake Kitchen is a local cozy breakfast place I stumbled upon while visiting. The place provided a “country home” atmosphere and the waitstaff was perky friendly. The food was extremely tasty and of substantial portions. The coffee ☕️is delicious with free refills! (I’m a fan of that) What I did not like was my check being place at my table before I got my food and the 4$ fee that is charged to you for use of a credit card. I think overall it is a lovely place and the outside seating area is illuminated with nature. 🍽️ I recommend a try just bring cash! Happy Eating!
My family and I took a snow trip to Lake Tahoe for Presidents Day weekend, and on the way up we decided to stop at Donnor Lake Kitchen for breakfast. The place has a nice cabin-style feel, which we liked at first. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill fast. We were told the wait would be about 30 minutes. That would have been fine if the place was actually full but it wasn’t. There were multiple empty tables that clearly just needed to be cleaned. No one seemed to be clearing them so waiting guests could be seated. We stood there watching open tables sit unused while families waited at the door. Completely disorganized. Once we were finally seated, the waiters did take our drink and food orders in a timely manner. The food itself was just okay nothing special and definitely not worth the wait or the price. We already knew we probably wouldn’t come back. Then came the real issue the bill. The waitress first brought our total written on the same notepad she used to take our order. That already seemed unprofessional. The total written down was $120. I handed her my debit card with that notepad slip. When she came back, she brought a printed receipt that now showed $125. No explanation. No mention of any extra charge. I assumed maybe it was some kind of card fee and decided not to argue. I left a $5 tip, bringing what I thought was my total to $130. A week after our trip, I was reviewing my bank statement and saw a charge from Donnor Lake Kitchen for $150. I was shocked. At first, I thought maybe it was an honest mistake. But I have never had a restaurant charge me more than what was on my final receipt especially $20 more. I looked at other reviews and realized I’m not the only one this has happened to. There are other complaints about incorrect charges to debit cards. That’s a serious red flag. I tried calling the restaurant the next day, and the phone went straight to voicemail, almost like the phone doesn’t even work. Very suspicious. This whole experience left a real sour taste. Between the disorganization, mediocre food, and what feels like shady billing practices, I would absolutely not recommend this place. Honestly, you’re better off stopping at McDonald’s for breakfast at least you won’t have to worry about someone taking more money than they’re supposed to. Never again.
Long wait with very little service. We waited 20 minutes for a table that had been empty for a while. Once ordered, the food took an hour to come out. No check-ins by the wait staff in between to manage expectations. Had to ask for basics like cream for a weak cup of coffee. The wait staff, in general, was not very personable. I’m surprised with the high ratings for this place. The food wasn’t anything special off a fairly overpriced, generic menu for a breakfast cafe. Plenty of options in the Tahoe area that do better.
