Seafood, Burgers, Fries and more is where "portion control" goes to die. This Barbara's Fishtrap in Half Moon Bay offered a culinary vector of fried abundance that all can enjoy. Recommended to eat nothing until your stomach needs food then go here. Award Winning fish and chips, Chowder Bread Bowls, salads, breads and fried whatever you want is in order. Greasy yes but it made me feel more energized rather than sluggish. Sauces tarter, cocktail sauce, ketchup, mustard, mayo dip it all.
If your ever in Half Moon Bay, you've gotta try Barbara's Fishtrap. Forgot to take food pics due to excitement! We ordered the Fish & Chips, and the Ringy Dingy Calamari to share. I think the calamari was my favorite. The portions are very generous, and the food tasted fabulous. Line was a little long, but it moves pretty fast, and they move the food out pretty quickly also. You can sit outside, and enjoy your meal with an ocean view.
The real deal. Half hour wait for winter weekday late lunch! A great option is to order takeout and walk your tray a few yards to outdoor picnic tables out front (dogs welcome). Easy parking across the street. Gorgeous views via 2 walls of windows but visible even from farthest corner. Low key / high performance vibe and service. No chit chat or constant checkins from the staff - they just knew what we needed and brought it quietly before we thought to ask. Cod of fish and chips was super fresh and tender but thick, generously portioned and gently crispy. Great fries with coleslaw available as a side for two, or visa versa. Just right $3 selected bottled beer special. Multiple juicy lemons and limes came on the side. Yes, Monk's vinegar bottles are on all tables. Get only a cup of the clam chowder because it's very thick, and happily full of clam flavor (vs cream). We had to skip dessert but there were over a dozen on offer.
My wife and I have been coming here on and off for over 40 years and it's a memorable place for us. The latest development is a senior fish and chips menu that is just 2 pieces instead of the plateful that normally comes. It's a good thing for us and there's no waste. Parking was pretty easy and only a short wait. A good option is to order ToGo and eat at one of the spots they have outside with a nice view of the bay.
Such a cute understated spot in Half Moon Bay. We originally planned for lunch across the street at the brewery but as of today 1/12 HMB brewing co is closed for renovations. Which is probably a good thing since we would have never tried Barbara's. No line on a winter weekday so we grabbed a table right away. The fish and chips certainly deserve their "award winning" status. The fish (cod?) is extremely fresh and tender, breaded lightly with tempura. The cup of chowder is likely one of the better ones I've had in a long time. Very comforting, complex, deeply flavored with generous clams. The fried mushrooms were nice, but the only item that didn't knock my socks off. Their $3 beer special was also a great deal. I can imagine how crowded this tiny spot gets during peak summer. Rightly so, it has a huge affordable menu with something for everyone. I appreciate how they close at 2pm to change out the oil and ensure it's fresh for afternoon/dinner service. The sign of a place that cares about quality. Looking forward to coming back to enjoy more!
Barbara really knows how to trap that fish! The line might look long, but it goes pretty fast and once you order you'll get your food pretty quickly! We really enjoyed the clam.chowder in the bread bowl. Tons of clams, good flavor, and the bread bowl is fresh and soft (by bread bowl standards) they also give you enough soup to fill out the bowl a couple of times. The fried fish and calamari were both great. Although, I think the fish edges out the "famous" Calamari! If you like fries, def get a side as the portion with the fish / calamari isn't a ton! Can't wait to come back and try more things! Also a great vibe eating right by the beach.
I’ve eaten at a lot of seafood spots and this is one of my favorites because of their scallops tempura. I’ve only ever ordered this dish, so I can’t say anything else about the rest of their menu but this place never disappoints! The reviews don’t lie, this seafood spot is superb! Service is quick and friendly too.
I like Barbara’s Fish trap. The ceviche is the best. It had the right amount of onions and cilantro if you like onions and cilantro. It is served with a side of pita chips. The fish and chip were good as well. The fish tastes fresh. The atmosphere was unique. It is a spot on the side of the harbor. We enjoyed sitting at the picnic tables along the side of the restaurant. We will definitely return to try other dishes.
Fresh seafood and amazing customer service. The scallops are incredible. As well as the Crab sandwich, Ceasar salad, clams, and tempura mushrooms. Their clam chowder is also a must. No cream added. They utilize the potato to get this incredible texture and thickness in the soup that's craveable. We live in SF but it's worth the 30 or ao minutes to get there. Dog friendly patio. Always a plus.
We arrived within 10 min of the restaurant opening and took the last table. It's worth the wait if you have to. The staff is friendly and efficient. The clam chowder was very fresh and tasty. We tried most tempura items (fish, scallop, shrimp, zucchini, and more). Everything was flavorful but hands down the scallops were the best. I'd order a plateful with some cheese bread. The bread on my fried oyster sandwich was perfectly toasted. I added the coal slaw to give it freshness and crunch. The steak fries were hefty and filling. The zucchini was a perfect side. We walked away completely satisfied. The portions are shareable. We will be back for more.
On a chilly Tuesday, I decided on a little trip over to half moon bay. After spending some time hiking and enjoying nature, we were hungry and chose Barbara’s Fishtrap. I had been scrolling through reviews and this seemed like a great place so I knew I had to try it out. All of the food was excellent, perhaps other than the oyster tempura sandwich. There were only 3 measly oysters which is terrible. However the large fish trap was fantastic. Everything on that plate was cooked well and tasted great. If I were to go back I definitely would skip the oyster sandwich because it does not feel worth the price at all for 3 fried oysters with relatively cheap items accompanying it. However, the saving grace of this meal was definitely the actual fish trap which is more of what they’re known for. In the future I would definitely just share the large fish trap among two people. Service was also nice but I could tell they were being rushed through everything.
Such an adorable fish shack on the beach. Perfect location. Plenty of seating inside and out. They have patio seating up and down the street as well as a cozy inside seating space. I felt like the price was very affordable for how much you get. 5 decent sized pieces of fresh cod with some of the best steak fries I’ve ever had was only $21. It came out hot and fast. We just stood at a table bench near by and watched the waves and people drive by as we enjoyed our lunch. We also got a cup of clam chowder which was delicious. All in all a great stop in Half Moon Bay for some delicious traditional California Bay Area fare!
One of the best Sea food restaurants in the area. Their Clam chowder is famous and for a good reason! Prepare for a wait especially on a he weekend, but it is well worth it! Most of their offerings are good. I e went with h the fried options for our last visit and wee very happy with our choice!
A winner every time! Make a pilgrimage from Oakland to half Moon Bay at least once a year. And I leave early because by 11:30. The traffic getting into town is just ridiculous. Got there about 10:55 before they open and there was already a line, but luckily it wasn’t too big of a line we got seated right away. The place was completely full in five minutes time The food was good. They have a three dollar beer special. My friend got fish and chips which was four large pieces of fish and I got the combination seafood Italiano pasta, which is basically a wine, garlic, herb and butter sauce. Sadly, they were all out of crab they said because the prices were just too high at this time of year. I also got the artichoke tempura which was piping hot and some onion rings for an appetizer next time. I’m gonna make sure that I get the mini fried seafood combination that seem to be something that everybody had they either had that and cup or a bread bowl of clam chowder. We took our time to eat and hung around half Moon Bay for maybe an hour walking lunch off and as I said the traffic coming into town as we were leaving was not fun looking. It pays to arrive early in half Moon Bay.
Stopped by for a quick lunch! This was the best fish and chips I've ever had. This place is road trip worthy.

Doing everything they need to do. Waitress so nice, refills on the sodas, hot yummy meal, seated quickly, and overall fun atmosphere. Thanks Barbra!!!!
Fantastic fish n chips, and the chowder was amazing! If there's a line, don't worry it moves fast and well worth the wait. Will be stopping here whenever in the Half Moon Bay Area.

We did take out. Fresh fish and the chowder was the best I have ever had!! Small but picturesque place on the water. Would definitely go back.
Why 4 stars....service, food, atmosphere, and clean bathroom. Service was great! because it is a hotspot/tourist spot/everyone tells you to go there… There was a 45 minute wait. I Decided to stay and wait since we were already there. we were called over the intercom and there were two Tables for two available and we got the one where I could face the door (I like to see who’s coming through the door). We shared a bowl of clam chowder, a catch the day fish sandwich and we asked for the fish to be grilled (cod - which is the same fish they usw for fish and chips), tempura scallops. The scallops were great! The open face sandwich was good and came with all the trimmings (lettuce, pickles, Tomatoes) The clam chowder to me was okay. It's their recipe...I'm used to old fashion recipe. our food came with steak fries, and coleslaw, which were a great sides. we also ordered One beer and one beverage. Wait staff was on point. I probably wouldn’t go back Because of the wait for a table, as well as as for ordering out. also, parking is first come first serve across the street otherwise park somewhere else. If I do go back, it will be for the coconut cake, which was amazing fluffy, Not so sugary but damn amazing
The best items I tried here were the fried Ocean prawns tempura and the Key Lime Pie with the Kona Hawaiian beer. The key lime pie was yummy...not exactly the same as I had in Key West (because the type of lime used is different here). The fish and garlic butter prawns were ok. I loved the Ocean prawns and the Kona Big Wave beer was the smoothest lightest beer almost like a lager. Definitely goes super well with orange wedges squeezed in it!
The restaurant closes to change frying oil between 3:00 to 3:45 but they start closing down earlier if needed. When we were there recently on a weekend, they stopped taking orders at the take out counter before 2:45 so just be aware and plan accordingly. It's an awesome fish shack. During peak lunch period, the wait time for a table in the restaurant can be an hr or more long. The line for the take out counter can also be long but it moves fairly quickly. There are several picnic style tables outside. Many people also take it to go on the beach. The fish and chips is what we get almost every time. The clam chowder is the best. They can broil the fish instead of frying it if you want. Just ask.
Solid seafood in a really cool, classic atmosphere. As someone who is not the biggest fan of fish and chips, I was pretty impressed with the fish and chips my girlfriend ordered here. The fish was flaky and the batter was crispy. I really enjoyed my calamari which was perfectly crispy and really tasty. It was also super cool that they have a $3 beer deal on offer... Would be happy to try something new on the menu next time I'm in the area.

Parking is difficult. Long line to order. 25-30 minute wait to be seated. 10 minute wait for to go. Decent amount of seating for to go outside the restaurant. Fish and chips was very greasy, but tasty. Clam chowder- potato based, with good flavor and a decent amount of clans. Decent portion size. I wouldn't rush back- plenty of other restaurants to try nearby.
Had not visited for 24 yrs since living in the Bay Area, and we use to go often for the best clam chowder ever and massive plates of combo fish and chips. The chunks of vegetables and clams has been reduced to more of a smooth base with some bits and missing the savoy herbs it use to be loaded with. Barbaras use to sit alone with nice coastal hiking. Always a treat when we lived close. Now there are buildings and more buildings and lots of eatery competition. HWY 1 extremely jammed, if thats the usual on a weekend now, Id say try a weekday, but an old haunt has lost the allure and ambiance and Id rather go to less crowded places on the coast. Made me sad to see the unrecognizable changes in the area. The original shack which I loved is still in use with a small front patio extension, and now has a take out separate area with plenty of table sitting outdoors. Expect to wait 45 mins to an hr for dine in unless you get there at 1:30 pm or later. Now living in Sacramento area glad we took the drive, but sadly, no need to go back.
