Demetri's is a popular spot, especially for breakfast and lunch, known for its comfort food and friendly service. The BBQ, cornbread, and fried okra are highly praised. Some find it crowded, especially on Sundays for brunch, and portion sizes can be inconsistent.

Always good bbq to breakfast , the Huevo rancheros is phenomenal, but my negative was years age they changed their fries and the new ones aren’t to my liking
First time in today and enjoyed everything. The food, atmosphere and service was awesome - particularly Mr. Ivy! He was the best and made my day with his great smile and amazing personality.
I love this place, especially on the weekends for brunch, fantastic. However, breakfast stops promptly at 10:30 during the week, that's not good. Like what am I supposed to do at 10:45 eat brisket?
⚠️🚨 WARNING 🚨⚠️ NOT safe to eat this cheeseburger while driving. First bite? Lost my peripheral vision temporarily. Second bite? Saw my past, present, future, and the one argument I won in 2014 with my ex-wife finally got resolved (like DMT, but without the long-term effects… or having to lick a toad in Sonora). Third bite… the burger spoke to me out loud. It said, “Put some respect on my name.” I said yes sir, pulled over immediately, turned the engine off, and finished the burger with respect. This isn’t food. You’ve been warned. 🏆 Best in town. Full stop.
Although this was just a to go order, I went ahead and got some Greek grape leaves to go to cook at my house for later. I must say they were perfect, so perfect that I had to tell everyone! A must have and will definitely get it again and again. 5 star!
Well I’ve reviewed in Idaho and Montana so why not Alabama? A recent two week trip to Dixie and neighboring Mississippi and we leave with our bellies full and our culinary worldview challenged. Great BBQ at a Greek joint? Who knew? Of course, you ask what would dudes from Boise know about BBQ. We know enough that out West they tend to cook too fast and over smoke. “Low and slow” and “Less is more” rings true. Thankfully my beloved Aunt Dixie, yes her real name, insisted we try Demetri’s in Homewood. I think words like Wow & Amazing are overused. I’d like to offer up a simple “YES!! As my choice to describe my experience. A simple yes to quality product, cooked with experience and an obvious love for their customers and calling. Demetri’s mastery of smoked wings, brisket and ribs begs for a special meat renaissance event. I picture Michelangelo, Beethoven and Matt Groening ravaging Demetri’s BBQ like a pack of Hyenas on a fresh kill. You may want to queue the eye roll but seriously; Demetri’s established in 1961, IS IT! Look no further Birmingham—all others are pretenders. Ask for Alan, an admittedly over-educated but unpretentious big brother who will make you feel right at home while he honestly, patiently and skillfully outmaneuvers your dumb questions. He made our stay rememberable while educating us on the establishment’s history, menu, favorites while curating suggestions based on our brief interaction. If you have the appetite and wallet I recommend one of everything. Farewell, for now, from Boise and I’ll see you in February when we return. Thanks again Demetri’s
Had a great time at this establishment. When we first walked in me and honey were greeted with a smile and everything was nice. The only con that I experienced was the meat on my nachos not being hot. But other than that, the staff was nice and their barbecue sauce is pretty good. Can't say much for their pepper sauce it really didn't have any heat to it at all. But overall honey and I enjoyed our evening there.
Awesome experience from beginning to end. If you want comfort food that tastes like Grandma made it than this is it! The okra is so fresh and crazy good! Mashed potatoes are real with small pieces of skin. Mushrooms are good chunks not slivers. Gravy tastes like skillet gravy not bullion and water. It was crowded and I still got a table and my food took no time! I can't wait to try something else on the menu!!! I ordered the large chopped steak onions gravy and mushrooms of course! Oh and the cornbread is sweet which I love! I don't think I ate half the steak or potatoes so there's a pic of the to go box. Do yourself a favor go try it for yourself!
Why I rated the overall atmosphere so poorly is simply because it was overcrowded and chaotic. Granted I did go on a Sunday for brunch which is not the best of times to go to relax, BUT obviously a good sign that this restaurant has fantastic food. I'm here to tell you, they definitely do. Today I had the stuffed poblano with shrimp. It comes with a delicious smokey red sauce, creamy and thick cheese sauce, and a little corn griddle cake. Also, yes, that is an entire half of an avocado! In addition to my entree, I had to try their famous "love" biscuit. You can order as is or grilled, and I had mine grilled. Wow. Not only is it a giant, it is so moist. This is quite possibly the best biscuit I have ever had. I look forward to coming back for one of their biscuit sandwiches.
Upon entering your greeted with this loud welcome from this talk dark host who makes you feel welcome right away. I ordered the barbecue chicken sandwich fries and a large Coke the atmosphere was buzzing it appeared every seat was filled everybody was smiling and eating so I expected goodness upon paying for the meal I was quickly disappointed to find that the french fries were half cooked chicken sandwich was too large and fall apart easily but the barbecue sauce for second to none.
PROS:The handicap parking was perfectly acessible and had easy ingress and egress to the restrauant. The wait staff was was warm friendly and 100 % professional. NEGATIVE: The food missed the mark! Really.... an Greek omelette (€11.50) price point which turned out to be tasteless flat with a total absence of feta? A side of spinach and tomatoes placed quickly on the flat top; which didnt wow nor did it taste or seem very special. PRESENTATION: Poor to non existent. KUDOS again to the lovely staff. EXCEPTIONAL Will try again on my next visit to UAB.Fingers crossed for better grub. €10.00 tip for the waitress
We were ordering for the office staff at least twice a week and spending quite a bit of money. We had a problem with an order instead of replacing it or doing anything to make it right, the manager only told us it won’t happen again but it did and still nothing. If you eat inside, you’re going to smell like that place and smoke until you wash your clothes. Will definitely never eat there again and encourage others not to do so as well. They don’t seem concerned with keeping clientele.
For a long time I’ve been very excited to try Dimitri’s for breakfast. There’s always a line out the door and today was no exception. So of course, my son and I were very excited and starving so we knew this was gonna be a good experience! ….How wrong we were. My son got pancakes with chocolate chips and they lacked any flavor at all and merely tasted like soggy bread. The bacon was a bit burnt, but luckily that’s how I like it! I got a side of cheese grits that were nothing less than water and sand. The sawmill gravy was slop and clearly made from a store bought packet, and the biscuits were super dry. $40 later I was left with a growling stomach and a hungry child. The only positive I can give this place is at the service was a tentative and kind. Don’t waste your time or your money. Go somewhere else.
I came to this restaurant 09/17/24 around 10-11. I decided to try this restaurant based on the sign in the front saying coffee for people who don’t like coffee. I come to the desk realize there is only two choices for coffee. I get told by two servers I can sit where ever I would like. Then I saw a large black sign saying I can seat myself. I sit in the corner at a 4 chair table alone. A female server comes up to me asking me 3 times back to back to move to another table. I ask why she said because I am alone I should sit at a 2 person table. I told her I don’t want to. She said I have to because I’m alone. There was 4 two person tables in the center of the dining area. I told her I don’t want to sit in the middle of the room. So I sit towards the back wall and there is staff running back and forth touching my shoulder. I start to feel very uncomfortable so I get a Togo box. The server never checked on me I had to approach her for a water and a to go box. I come to the register and I ask for military discount. She tells me they only do it on soda but the machine isn’t working today. So at this point I tell her twice I want to speak to a manager. Then she tries to explain about the soda machine. I tell her I don’t want a soda I want to speak to your manager. I speak to the manager she explains the female server is new and that they change the sign at lunch time. I told that military and law enforcement do not like to sit with our back to the front door. She said next time she will seat me. Manager said the co2 is out on the soda machine. This was my very first time visiting and I will make sure it is my last. Never been to a restaurant that demands people to move tables. wish I would’ve left when she asked me to move tables because I was so uncomfortable . 30.80 for a brisket plate and one iced coffee with some terrible service Discount for something that isn’t available?!!
