I love this place. I go to wash my clothes and till it’s ready I enjoy a nice coffee.
Great atmosphere, low prices. Delicious daily brew coffee. Rotating selection of artwork adorns the walls. Music selection is usually good but pretty diverse ranging from downtempo to African Jazz to Spanish rock to whatever the employees feel like playing. It's never too crowded in here, there's always room to sit down and plenty of spaces to work on your laptop. It's my go-to coffee shop.
10/10 awesome staff! Must try! Good vibes!
Cool little gem in the Westmoreland area of Montrose. Laid back vibe.
Great place to work out of. Fast internet, outdoor and indoor sitting and quiet enough to have meetings. Food there is just warmed up pastries and they do have good coffee.
I’ve been coming here for years, I love this coffeeshop. The fall drink menu looked so tasty, the Maple Crunch drink is so goooood! Corby and Angelena were so kind today and made my drink so well! I love the vibe here. Will always come back!
I love stopping here before work. The Crude special drink is awesome and suuuuper caffeinated :) great food too, the most massive croissants, and awesome staff. Always busy but never packed, super diverse crowd in a great location
The shop is soothing in it's familiarity, with it's swing set and seemingly open space. Whether I am meeting a friend of working, this place always ensure a relaxed space in a city that feels so stressed. All three years of coming here have given me a mindless drive toward it, like going home, and being rewarded with coffee made with simple and delicious ingredients that stand out from it's neighbors. I never go in expecting the best, but only because it's ensured.
Great coffee shop. Fast and friendly service accompanied by wonderful coffee. Lovely place!
Always good coffee and pastries if you get there in the morning. A thoughtful staff that remembers your name and has time to chat. Not the place to go if you are in a hurry, go to Starbucks instead. Mercantile has a laid-back groove and is a great place to meet and talk, get some work done, or just enjoy a little break.
This place has to be the best for any students out there trying to find a coffee shop to sit all day. Lots of natural light and a peaceful place to sit and study for an exam or even just hang out. I only wish it was opened till 9pm at least. Great coffee and amazing customer service.
A really pleasant place to spend an afternoon. I love Boomtown coffee, which they use. The music playing is always eclectic without being intrusive. The staff always seem genuinely caring without all that corporate niceness. I also like that it's in a mostly residential neighborhood, with oak lined streets for a view. The porch swing inside the coffee shop is an apt symbol for my time spent here.
Honestly, I love Mercantile too much to even write a review because I don't want the word to get out and overpopulate this lovely little place. It serves great coffee. Its flat white has been my favorite since I first visited. It has ample space that allows you to work alone, with a group, or simply hang out with friends. The staff here are super friendly. I was once given a free bakery because the manager Brian (sorry if I didn't type your name right) found out I was offered a job after spending many days job searching at the coffee house. So if you live in Montrose or ever stop by this neighborhood, be sure to come in and grab a cup of coffee at Mercantile. I guarantee you won't be disappointed!
Jonathan and his crew do good work. Been coming here for years. They partner smart when it comes to food and other drinks and the coffee tastes much better than Siphons in our opinion. Often we will get breakfast elsewhere but we get our coffee here. Many times we will walk the dog here and grab a quick glass of wine to cap off the evening. Great neighborhood spot and never had a bad experience in 3 years.
great espresso, amazing service (esp gabby and taylor) and the pastries, tacos and empanadas they have brought in are delicious. ❤️
One of my favorite places to come on the weekends to come get my coffee. Usually try to stop by to get my caffeine fix in the mornings but I really like to come here weekend mornings to gather my thoughts and do some work. It’s super quiet and very open to light.
I have been a regular at Mercantile for over 5yrs, and can confidently say, they have some of the best varieties of coffee roast. The barristers are friendly and knowledgeable when it comes to recommending good ☕ . Melissa steams the milk and blends the coffee bean just right to give it an awesome taste. If you are an avid coffee drinker, you will definitely enjoy savoring the taste of their Ethiopian blends.
A great neighbor hood coffeeshop to hang out, meet friends or pet-friends, just enjoy the wonderful midtown ambience. A true alternative if you want to go in a different direction from grande-venti. Give the place a try. Friendly staff, coffee that takes care of business and an electic mix of family and "Family". Lovely vibe!
Literally one of my favorite places to study. I tell everyone I meet that Merc has got it RIGHT with the outlet availability, music volume/vibe, and coffee. Everyone is there to either study or do work and I really love how quiet it is. On sundays though, there's big groups that come in to the back table and are pretty loud so I'd be wary if you are trying to focus and come in on Sunday! Love their coffee too :)
Nice quiet cafe. It's not one of those over stylized looking cafes. It's got comfy seats, it's clean, the people are nice, the music isn't too loud and it's not terrible. Its what you actually want in a coffee shop. Great place to study. Open relatively late. While I like the "pretty" looking places this is the one I end up at because it's one of the few that's actually made for enjoying rather than isntagraming.
Always for here to grab a drink - barista of the day was great
Arguably the best lattes in Houston with the espresso always good and strong. Staff members are fun and helpful and the empanadas are amazing (get yours early because they will run out each day). Mercantile also opens most holidays because that’s how hard-working and dedicated their employees are.
Excellent Espresso, they have a Marzocco Strada after all, as well as fantastic mint tea. I very much enjoyed the laid back service and atmosphere, plus the complimentary hot water refill was extremely nice. I always feel a bit weary ordering tea outside, but it was very high quality and I thoroughly enjoyed every sip of it! I'll definitely be back! Btw, as a Blackhole Coffee regular it endearingly felt like stepping into a parallel universe. Both are tugged away in a sleepy mini neighborhood strip mall under trees, with a washeteria to their left and a good third of the seats are occupied by study groups.
Scared to say it's one of my new favorite coffee shops because I don't want it to start to get crowded, but it's just so great! It's very chill. Think Black Hole and Campesino had an artsy but mellow child. There's plenty of seating: outside is great for chatting, small tables for working alone with some table space, a few tall window tables, and my favorite which is a giant table that fits at least 10. The inside is a tiny bit quieter than most coffee shops I've been to but not like excessive pressure to talk quietly. I think what draws me to Mercantile is really just the chill vibes I get when visiting since it's a little separated from most of the other Houston hot spots. The coffee is pretty good but I tend to go for just the classic drinks. I would recommend the spicy coffee (it has cayenne pepper in it!)
Absolutely love this coffee shop gem. It has a nice, quiet vibe, yet casual. I like ordering the cafe miel. Delicious! They also have breakfast tacos catered by Taco Deli, which is a plus! There's always parking available.
What an ideal little spot! I got a coffee and a bean taco. (their last one of the day) They sell out pretty early it seems. The coffee was smooth and fresh. The two attendants at the front were very friendly. It had been a couple years since I had been here, I'm glad I came back. Also, I ride a bike and they do have a bike rack on the side. They could add another rack in a more prominent location out front, but I'm glad I was able to lock up to a sturdy rack.
A fantastic, chill coffee shop near the museum district. The interior is simple, yet inviting. The walls have a selection of appeasing art and photographs. Great coffee is available for a reasonable price. One can also find some snacks if you get a little hungry. One can find a variety of seating available, there should be something for everyone: couches for relaxing, bar stools for standing or having a pleasant view of the outdoors, or just tables and chairs. There are plenty of plugs for charging your devices around the cafe. A great cafe to work as you can charge your device and cruise the free WiFi as you please. There are restrooms, free self-serve water, and chill not-too-loud music playing throughout the cafe. The servers are fun and friendly, and the people that tend to come here are kind and respectful of the atmosphere here. Would highly recommend!
This place reminded me of coffee shops in New Orleans - my hometown ❤️❤️❤️. It’s a large space, the choice of music is great and it’s a quiet, clean coffee shop. It’s definitely a great place to bring your laptop and get some work done. The coffee tastes very different from what I am used to. It’s extremely smooth. It’s not bitter at all. They have a number of sweets to choose from as well and lots of different types of kombucha too.
This cafe is lovely! Friendly baristas, quiet atmosphere, and I enjoy the food/drink menu. The hours are limited compared to other cafes but it’s a fair trade for the quality of service and product in my book.
Took this one to go, and it was absolutely worth it. The mocha is rich and smooth without being overly sweet, and the spice? Just enough heat to make things interesting. It’s a slow build — a little cinnamon warmth and a subtle chili kick that lingers in the best way. Definitely not your average flavored coffee. The flat white base keeps it bold and balanced. The espresso shines through, creamy milk smooths it out. Great texture, great flavor. If you like your coffee strong with a twist, this is it. Perfect for a morning pick-me-up when you want something different but still grounded.
This place satisfied all my requirements of studying: 1. Soft sofa makes me feel comfortable even sit down for long time. They also have many other kinds of seats which could satisfy you. 2. Outlets & WiFi are reliable. 3. Pretty quiet! 4. Not cold \(*TT*)/ 5. Flat white is a must try! 6. Parking lot is small. If you could arrive earlier just like before noon, you could get one. Or you could find street parking. 7. Long opening hours (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡.
excellent coffee shop in the heart of Montrose hidden in the neighborhood. I'm a mobile notary service and had one of my clients meet me here to notarize Documents and this was a very creative and friendly coffee shop. Will definitely recommend to meet future customers here to notarize document's
Amazing space! And even better customer service. Today the espresso machine was broken and the barista made the best out of the situation. Asked me what I normally order and I provided with cold brew and some mocha. That’s what I call service! Been here many times before and will come back.
Such a nice spot that really feels like a part of the houston community! Coffee was good and there’s a lot of spaces to sit and work or chat including larger tables and couches. Bring a sweater though because it was chilly inside
Love to grab an iced cap and work from this spot. Amazing baristas, great atmosphere, and friendly vibes!
They are always out of something so best to have a plan B or C. Friendly Staff this morning made up for it! Good treats.
I have sooooo much love for Mercantile. I used to study here for hours, and have met with friends here for a little chat. The baristas are amazing and friendly. They have an extensive selection and sometimes have holiday menus which are to die for! This place will always have a space in my heart.
Cool aesthetic, Amazing options the cold brew is strong!!!
Great coffee. I got their seasonal “Kiss me from a Rose” latte w/ oatmilk. It has house made cardamom rose syrup it it, and was not overly sweet and pretty balanced floral to spice flavor. Wasn’t spicy, and tasted milky sweet and savory. Very cozy and relaxing atmosphere. Fast WiFi so great spot to WFH and/or do some school work. Can get a bit chilly sometimes so bring a jacket. They had light jazz & piano music playing in the background, which add to the ambiance of the place making it comfortable and inviting. Super friendly staff and great customer service. It was my first time and the staff member was very knowledgeable in helping me choose a drink based of the flavor profile I usually enjoy. They have a small free parking lot in front of the cafe. Come early if planning on going during rush hour. Parking looks like it can get a bit tricky if you come on weekend, but for a weekday afternoon it wasn’t bad. Overall highly recommend checking them out! 🙌☕️
I ordered an Almond Latte from the Winter season options and it tasted amazing! Prices are good and the place has a very nice atmosphere, perfect to come with friends or work from a nice coffeeshop. Highly recommended
I have made it a personal mission to try all the coffee places in h-town and this is one of my favorite. Great coffee, nice people, and just love the place tucked in a quiet neighborhood inside the city. It feels you are having coffee in some corner cafe in Europe.
Vibes are great in here! Feel like i’m either gonna break out into a flash mob with everyone or I’m gonna sit and read my book till I’m nothing but dust! The employee with the big glasses was super cool and made me a mean london fog! I think their name was isabel?? Anyways, great place in Houston!
The best coffee shop in Montrose. The best thing about it is the coffee you get to enjoy while sitting outside, accompanied by the neighborhood. The baristas are great. The shop’s formal attire is that of rock band t shirts.
I'm not a coffee drinker at all, but I would say if I lived closer to this place I'd probably become one, I got a tea while here and really enjoyed it. It's a great tea, an incredible atmosphere, very friendly staff. I feel like I could have spent the entire day there. They do events sometimes which I have not gotten a chance to visit yet but I hear great things!! Definitely recommend trying a few new things. They have a few different cold brews which are pretty good
We were looking for a place to relax for a bit and we found this place. It's a little out of the main road and I never really noticed it before but the inside was really a vibe. There were a lot of places to sit and an area with some reading stuff but the interesting part was that it had instruments, piano and drum set, a swing and a pink table like area. The coffee was good too.
Great coffee and tea☆☆☆☆☆ Mercedes is awesome as well, great customer hospitality is out of this world☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ She deserves a RAISE for real and she knows her coffee @ how to make it!!! U8 Nice, clean and quiet and the customers are friendly and quiet! Thank you Jesus for this coffee shop!
this place has a wonderful atmosphere with a lovely, welcoming barista. it’s tucked away in Montrose, feeling hidden in some way. The barista was the sweetest ever. I wish I got her name so I could shout her out. I loved the atmosphere of this place, with their books and decorations. The coffee I had, while good, was nothing really spectacular. But, the kind customer service made it for me. I had a iced vanilla latte with oatmilk. Again, nothing terribly special, (I’m partial to richer espresso blends, and this one didn’t have much dimension). It has a bit of an aftertaste. I wouldn’t come for the coffee necessarily, rather for the vibes. The coffee is just a plus. If the barista who served me sees this, you were tall with long hair and I came on Thursday 12/14 around 7:30 am, keep doing what you do :) you made my day!
Unfortunately didn't try the food but the good was pretty good. Staff was super friendly. Love the vibe of the place. Quite ample with plenty of seating .Live music Monday from 7-9pm. Plenty of parking available when I went early morning but it doesn't seem like they have a ton of parking available.
My wife and I stumbled on this spacious cafe/lounge on a recent spur-of-the-moment trip to Houston recently and found it to be delightful. She had a great coffee and my wine was delicious and well-priced. A definite recommendation if you're in the neighborhood!
Nice quiet place, good coffee, good service. The people behind the bar are frequently a little loud for me but it's not a big deal. What makes this place for me is that there is a lot of "desk space". There is a big fat picnic table in the back, and the tables against the wall are also pretty deep. It's usually easy to spread out and do your work comfortably without imposing on your neighbors. Montrose Mercantile seems to be getting more popular all the time though. It's a good thing, but the fit is a little tighter every time I go.
Love the atmosphere and I like that most patrons here respect that everyone else is a remote worker. The small snacks are great and the service is good enough to not need much interaction. I mean they get things right the first time, so you don't need to spend much time at the counter. Parking is hot or miss, so be wary.
Good atmosphere to work and study while enjoying a latte. Mercantile, what are your business hours? Google maps and the provided website have different times, also I called the phone number shown in the website and the Google maps and it seems to be a personal number and not the business phone number. Please help, thank you so much in advance (: I'd like to know in order to coordinate and not show up at 6pm expecting it to be open until 9pm, just to see that yall are closed.
UPDATE: I’m updating this review as much has improved! The Wi-Fi is definitely way more reliable and the baristas there are making better drinks. I get a matcha lightly sweetened and it’s pretty good. It’s super comfortable and spacious. I usually only come when I use the laundry next door but it’s a chill environment to be in. Maybe the few times I went previously were just off days 🤷🏽♀️ As someone who literally sits in coffee shops for a living this one is not the best. The coffee is not the best quality, the Wi-Fi is unreliable and other than the aesthetics being nice and minimalist, there aren’t any other redeemable qualities.
Its a cool little spot to get coffee and do some work
The $3.50 kolaches are a good asset for this cafe right now. Fairly priced, well made bread that is springy but robust, fine sausage. The egg wash adds a nice caramel tone to the finish. Speaking of caramel, I ordered a caramel latte, hot, large with four shots (the standard). What I found was a drink that wasn’t offensively sweet but not especially bold. I’m not sure I’d describe it as watery, but could be stronger. The atmosphere of the shoppe is fine, a little stinky inside, but most Houston establishments are. The volume was appropriate, and the location is nice with large oaks on the street. I come here infrequently but maybe they have more to offer than some cafes nearby.
Great vibe and the drinks are awesome, but there could be more plugs! Also the tables at the windows are high, but there’s only one high bench there, making the tables unusable if you want to go there and work. But the rest of the seating is awesome!
Charming coffee shop in the Montrose area - the barista is very friendly and did a great job despite the extreme influx of customers (busy Saturday) There was a local chess club meetup so seating was limited. The ship has wifi and good amount of plugs. The seats weren’t the most comfy but the overall vibe is relaxed.
Nice coffee shop in the Montrose area that has a similar look and feel as Black Hole located several blocks away. Plenty of tables and chairs for seating (though I do wonder who ever uses the indoor swing). Standard coffee and tea menu on offer with a selection of various pastries as well. The space has an artsy feel to it, and I appreciated the style of the barista who was wearing a "Montrose" cap but in the colors, lettering, and style of Marlboro cigarettes. Additionally, I enjoyed the huge world map on the wall of the bathroom (what better place to contemplate one's next international trip than while on the john?). Service was quick, coffee was good, and the place proved to be a quiet place to get some work done. My only hangups with Mercantile are that it was actually a bit too quiet for my liking. I like there to be a bit of background music and a light din of conversation, but things were almost completely silent here like a library. Along with that, the space felt a bit cold and warehouse-like without the cozy vibe that I prefer when at a coffee shop to get some work or studying done. Regardless, I still enjoyed the spot overall and will add it to my list of coffee shops for Montrose.
It's a nice relaxed place. I found it perfect that, they offer sugar free insusions or teas, there are vegan snacks too. It's ok.
Average. Maybe below average coffee. And it’s a bit overpriced. The quality of coffee is ok. Slightly above average. Coffee has boring flavors. Their two special coffees are Mayan and honey flavored. Not a great place to work or study. Seats are not comfortable. The music suddenly gets low then frustratingly loud. Service is ok. Space is kinda crammed.
Mercantile, opened in 2014, is a modern coffee shop in the Montrose area. Inside is a wide array of seating arrangements including a bar, couches and a picnic table, able to accommodate groups from just two or up to eight. The large windows provide a view of the outside, as well as the little assortment of outdoor seating. The inside had a variety of magazines, for people to read decorating the entryway, although cannot decide what it wants to be, or at least not successfully display this. On one side there is a lit up sign like you might see at a diner, while on the other there is a picnic table on fake grass, there is also a swing which is an enjoyable little feature, but does not make a whole lot of sense. Behind the bar is a design of trees which doesn’t seem to fit with anything else in the restaurant. This and the way the inside was set up with a large space with no tables, were confusing to me. The music was another part that did not match the rest, none of it seemed to have a theme to fit into. Inside, the ordering process went smoothly considering we had a group of eleven and we found tables and waited the short time before our food was ready. I first got chamomile tea which is served steaming with the tea bag. It tasted like just about any chamomile tea with a flowery flavor that was warm in contrast to the cold inside of the shop. Shortly after, my croissant arrived. I had asked for it warmed up when I ordered, so I was disappointed when the outside was just barely warm and the inside was almost cold. Other than it being cold the croissant is crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside with a buttery flavor. It did not stand out against any other croissant I have had, especially considering it was cold, but other than that is wasn’t bad. We had the same experience with the chocolate croissant and blueberry muffin we ordered. The chocolate croissant is flakey with hard chocolate chips and the muffin is moist but room temperature with an overdose of blueberries. Although the food was not exactly what we had hoped for the staff were amiable. They served us quickly and happily and this made the experience more pleasant. They got our order down easily and there were no problems with anything having to do with the service. Although the food was up to standards have a friendly staff made for a decent experience at Mercantile. This is a place I would recommend to study or get some work done in the peaceful atmosphere that is not too crowded. They have a peaceful atmosphere with lots of space where you could study or just relax with friends.
I came mid-afternoon, and had not had lunch. I was looking forward to a snack and Mercantile had no more food of any kind. I was meeting someone there so didn't leave, but having nothing to eat was a big disappointment.
The coffee: I just didn't like my drink. It was creamy, which was nice, but it had a sharp and bitter taste, and just tasted very beany. A packet of brown sugar mellowed it out, but it still wasn't the best. Maybe if there wasn't such amazing competition, I would feel differently, but the problem is there are just places that have coffee that better fits my tastes. The shop: It seems a bit confused. There's no real central theme. One corner is set up for like a backyard picnic, complete with fake grass. Another like a waiting room. None of the tables or chairs match in any way really. I do like some aspects of it like the neon sign and the art and the hanging swing, but it just feels all over the place. There's also a lot of empty space in the middle. Some if the couches and tables are just kind of old and dirty. There powerstrips along the walls if you feel like doing work, so points there. I also like how they accept NFC payments and have a rewards system. The service: Friendly. They were pretty nice, and cleaned up the table we sat at when they saw how messy it was from previous customers. Overall: Though I didn't really like my coffee that much, there's nothing really bad about this place. It just doesn't win me over.
The coffee is decent but the chairs are terrible to sit. If you want to do some quiet work, this is not that place. Buy some chairs and desks
I hate leaving a not so glowing review but I have to be honest, the coffee wasn’t great. The vibes are vibing and the place is great to hang out, I really loved the energy. Maybe I didn’t choose the right drink. My daughter ordered a chai and it was watery. They were nice enough to make her a different drink. She opted for a matcha and that also didn’t taste good. I got the basic ghoul latte. My coffee was ok but wasn’t anything special. Overall, I can tolerate mediocre coffee for the great atmosphere. If you’re picky about your coffee, then maybe try another spot.
I hate leaving this 2 star review but seriously the coffee I had ruined my afternoon. The lovely young ladies at the register and behind the counter were nice and suggested things, I ended up with a cold brew with a splash of cream, it was ready in less than 5 seconds. The color of my cold brew was off, it looked like watered down tea, but what takes the cake was the taste. It was horrible! I mean HORRIBLE! It was sour and super acidic and I could not take another sip without gagging. I did not want to be that person that goes up and says "I don't like this"... I threw half of it in the trash and filled my cup with water and pretended to sip my coffee just to have something to do. That was $5. literally thrown in the trashcan (could have bought a dozen eggs with that). Atmosphere is more like a study room but the patio was pleasant enough only because the weather was nice. It's always nice to sit out with a car grill in your face and car fumes in the air.
I miss the old Mercantile. The current version isn't what the old version used to be, when they had a Rice Village location also. The current version has several new baristas that, while peppy and chatty, don't appear to be quite as attentive to orders. Only two - Gabby and Taylor - are on the ball, and are as efficient as they are friendly. From the others, I've noticed an uptick in order errors as well as how long it takes to get a simple, one-cup order. If you're 20-something, have time to spare, and don't care how you're treated by a business, Mercantile appears to be aiming squarely for you as a customer now. They don't appear to be aiming for anyone else. They're certainly not aiming for me. :-(
Dude saw the post about not getting service, same thing happened last week lol. The baristas saw me come in and I was the only person in line. They stayed talking to some older bald guy about dogs at some shelter, and ignored me.
The Latte was so watery and I paid $6 for a small plus a tip. I only tipped because the ladies were so nice other than that horrible drink.
This coffee tasted like my grandmas couch and I felt the aroma around me decaying slowly as a I drank it .
Stood in no line and baristas just ignored me and decided to pet a dog of someone that came in after me. I don’t think I really got any acknowledgment for 5 min and just left. Seemed like a cool place.
I wash at the laundromat next door every 2 weeks. Then I go grab coffee from this spot. Today, I spilled fabric softener on my hands while washing and needed to wash my hands. The bathroom at the laundromat was "out of order". I went to the coffee shop and asked to where was the bathroom. The lady told me behind the wall. So I went to wash my hands. The bathroom door was locked. I asked if I needed a key and the same lady told me the bathroom was for "paying customers" only. I told her I intended to purchase. She then looked at the other lady and refused to give me access to the bathroom! I said never mind and left to go get coffee from SIPHON (MUCH BETTER COFFEE ANYWAY). Now I've ordered much from Merchandise Mercantile including a Tajin Mango Lemonade which is one of the most disgusting things I have ever tasted! They have lost a customer and EARNED a bad review. P.S. The lady just came out and harassed me and told me I couldn't sit at the tables while waiting for my clothes to finish. TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
This place feels really sloppy at times. One particular employee is getting too comfortable… touching and feeding dogs (who are allowed inside) while on service and being WAY too loud with the regulars. This one customer took a while to grab her coffee order from the counter and the employee made a sarcastic comment when she went up to get it. I mean, just say “thank you” or “enjoy” …
