Nalu's Hawaiian Fish Grill is a hidden gem with excellent food and service. Customers rave about the spicy beef katsu plate, Kalua pork and cabbage, and musubi. The staff is friendly and helpful with recommendations.
Tip: If you're unfamiliar with the menu, the staff is happy to recommend dishes based on your preferences.
This place is a true hidden gem. A ton of healthy, fresh options available. However, I'm here for the musubi. It is so delicious. I recommend the original spam, but the sausage is also quite flavorful. The staff are super helpful and offer recommendations based on your tastes if you are not familiar with the dishes. Prices are also very reasonable. Overall, a must visit.
• 5/5 Overall -- nothing worth docking a star for. • 4/5 For the Chicken Katsu because it was slightly burnt. (not the traditional Hawaii katsu sauce either -- it was a sweeter variation) • 5/5 For the Kalua Pork & Cabbage (pretty spot on with what you'd get in Hawaii) • 3/5 For the Mac Salad (sort of bland and I'd prefer Potato Mac Salad) • 5/5 For the Asian Slaw (delicious) • 5/5 For the price you pay for what you get. (filled me up pretty well -- 6'4" Afakasi) I'll probably go back again.
Amazing food deserved 5 stars first time here and boy my mouth still on fire. The plate was worth it had the spicy steak katsu plate. It's so yummy in my tummy. Their spicy soup is amazing too. Just great food good vibes service was great def coming back soon So update:5/4/2021 the person today had an attitude on the phone and kept huffing as I ordered. When we got our food the portions were so small like ridiculous small. What in the actually fudge. Little pieces of rice and small portions. As if I ordered a kids meal. Spent about 45$ for three plates to all have tiny portions. And the dude at the front had attitude and What not. Come on. Disappointed and disrespectful
Yummy garlic ahi!
Great food!
Love the panko ahi!!!
Fish grill, Noddles, etc with a Hawaiian twist
Love the food and service
Tasty!
Amazing!
A+! Love it and going back tonight :)
Great fresh food.
Love love the signature salmon dish.
Great food and great service
Unequivocallly the tastiest seafood restaurant I've ever tasted. I highly recommend this place!
This place is consistently good. I like to get the signature grilled salmon plate.
Very delicious meals, good size and lots of flavor!
Very delicious, reasonably priced, and quick service!
I'm from Hawaii and this place brings me back home when I eat there! Ono kine grind!
Very good food, speaks for itself. Employee's need to learn to speak the language. . English
Great little Hawaiian place! Wish they still had the shave ice!
Best Hawaiian food I've had that's not in Hawaii!!
Really yummy hidden gem - always friendly staff, fast service
Really good food at a very affordable price!
I feel like I am on Maui when I enjoy the carefully prepared food from the kitchen
The charbroiled salmon is always my go-to whenever I come here.
Very nice people. Food is delicious
Very tasty. Friendly staff too!
Stopped in for Lunch. Food was delicious 💙
Gets busy during the week for lunch, so call ahead to place a to-go order to save time. Personal favorites are the pineapple chicken, spicy kimchee seafood saimin, and the spicy roast pork bowl.
Great place for some Hawaiian dishes. I love the steak and chicken plates. Reasonable prices. Feels healthy when I eat there.
Awesome service, amazing food. Katsu and beef were my favorite. Definitely coming back.
Are you looking for the most amazing Hawaiian Fish Restaurant? Look no further. Nalu's dishes are all uniquely delicious and healrhy. You must try it to see for yourself
Steak and Katsu are amazing. Mac salad is wonderful as well. Prices are reasonable too ($8-$10 a plate).
Two for two. Been here twice and both times they've delivered. Service is brimming with joy yet cordial. Food is excellent and at a fare rate.
One of my favorite all time eateries in OC. You cannot go wrong with the Signature Salmon + Spam Musubi. 106/100 every time.
Great staff, food & service! I ve visited 3 different locations in South OC. Love the Mahi Mahi dish 😋.
Great tasting food, fast service. A tad more pricy for the portion, but the food still tasted fresh/delicious
I normally get food for my puppies. Great customer service and my doggies love their salmon kids meal
The grilled salmon with aioli sauce is delicious, and not expensive at all. Great place for lunch
Their fish grill is the best in town, at least to my taste burd. And it's consistently good.
Not only is the food great for reasonable prices, but the service went above and beyond for me.
Love this place! Always delicious and every dish is packed with flavor.
Luv the food. Always freshly made and yummy. Was not a sea food fan but luv the way they cook the fish and shrimp. If you want some tasty food make one visit and you will keep returning.
Nalu’s is great! Fresh food that’s delicious and healthy. I love the Mahi plate. You need to try this place.
I always love eating at Nalu's. My favorite to order is the carmelized salmon. I brought my coworker here once and she loves it! The food reminds me of Hawaii...tastes just like it too! Authentic and fresh to order:)
Fresh delicious seafood as well as other menu choices with a Hawaii vibe. I like the grilled salmon filet on bed of rice with coleslaw. A generous portion for $10. Other fresh seafood choices available, soups, salads etc. Service is courteous and fast.
A delicious healthy place to try local Hawaiian type of dishes. The garlic noodles with shrimp is a must try!! Comes with a side of greens as well! Soooo good!
Any time I go into a new restaurant and they have a lot of choices, I get a little overwhelmed. There were a lot of choices here, so I chose something familiar, seared ahi. It was delicious! The prices are reasonable, the staff is friendly and helpful, and I'll definitely be going back.
The food here is always delicious and satisfying. However they have cut back on the portion and raised prices, but I will still go back. The staff is nice and pretty quick when making our order. Definitely recommend this place.
Love this spot! I've been coming here for 12+ years but don't live close so I don't come as often as I want. Decided to stop and so happy I did! Food is great, per usual and Jordan was super nice too! Thank you Nalu's 🩷 I always get the panko crusted seared ahi tuna and it's exactly as I remember. LOVE IT!
LOVE the salmon salad! Delicious!! My kids love the salmon/rice, my health freak D loves the TuTus eat right salad & my hubby too! We always order in for delivery so don’t have the experience of the restaurant. But the food is healthy, fresh and 😋 delicious
I work nearby and always come here to get lunch when I go out to eat. Great service. Great food. Definitely recommend
Not sure why this place doesn’t have a better rating. Been here many times and every time I get consistently good tasting dishes and side orders. Sure, it’s a chain, but everything is clean, food is fresh and workers are friendly. Good go-to for food emergencies
Mu buen servicio y Rica comida
Decepcionado e irrespetuoso.
Had the 2 TUTU’S BENTOS and the kids couldn’t get enough of the chicken katsu. It was all pretty good but took a long time to get our food. I don’t know what was going on but it looked like they started to take out the trash but never finished. They never put in bags so the trash was piling up. I guess they were short staffed or something.
The food and service were both excellent. Tons of items to choose from; soups, bowls, salads, etc. #LocalGuides
I am not a seafood type but I really enjoyed this place 😋 Mahi Mahi sandwich was really nice. Unfortunately due to COVID inside was closed but still amazing service 👌
Their pineapple chicken is bomb!
The portions were big, the food was delicious, and it was reasonably priced.
Great place to come grab lunch. Favorites are the grill chicken breast, grill salmon, and the shoyu poke
Foods are great, but they are getting a little pricey.
Great hole in the wall spot for Hawaiian food.
Only ate the Garlic Ahi. Going to eat the White Fish for dinner.
Great little place for healthy or not so healthy bites
Stopped in to grab a bite and really enjoyed their spicy poke bowl. The staff was friendly and I like that there are also tables to sit outside and enjoy your meal.
Excellent food, and the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is I later learned the owner keeps the tips! So if you go TIP CASH ONLY ... so the workers get the tips
Great food and nice people working there. The only reason I gave it one less star is that their restroom needs major cleaning and upkeep.
I enjoyed my food here - the only thing is that lunch hour is packed and my order took a good 10min+ before I received it.
The food was great but the fact that we couldn’t eat inside is sad 😞 I won’t be back until it does! Come on California let’s be real!! Ray Barkley
good food at a reasonable price. nice theme inside. the restroom looked a little neglected though and was out of hand soap too. 😕
The food was excellent! I had the roast pork rice bowl.
My first time eating here, and Highly recommend the Aina Mix Plate! 👌🏻
Solid Hawaiian restaurant. I think the quality of the food is better at the Laguna Niguel location for some reason. This place is close to the hospital for lunch. I recommend the mahi mahi and tilapia. Good mixed plates with similar flavor to Hawaii. Very reasonable prices.
I stopped for an impromptu lunch. It's a somewhat small restaurant that doesn't offer any type of table service but rather a counter where you order and walk away with a table number. I really liked the menu book, professional staged photos of each of the dishes but none of the prices were listed. You must somehow find the item on the menu board and then look up price. Prices in the "book" would really help. Service is akin to what you'd expect at a fast food restaurant, not this place. I think they should really look at service and maybe step it up a bit. The food though, in my opinion, was excellent! Fresh ahi that tasted just like that, fresh. The sides, slaw and macaroni were both very good as well. I'd definitely come back for the food and try something different.
Good variety of plates. I went with the fish since it wasn't deep fried. Quick service. Make sure to ask for options as if you don't you will get the standard white rice and slaw. It would be great if they had a better selection of beverages.
Disappointed with the mahi mahi sandwich. The fish was literally the same thickness as the slice of American cheese. If you like dry cabbage you'll love this sandwich.
The macaroni salad was the best thing I can say anything good about. My chicken Katsu was extremely dry and over fried, almost as if it was premade, and they reheated it again, which dried it out. The rice was good, but came with a very small scoop for a huge plate. The spam musubi was good, but very lacking in flavor there was no teriyaki or any kind of dressing within the spam musubi, which is not traditional Hawaiian. If they were going for a very untraditional way of representation of Hawaiian food, then they’re on that path. The actual place itself is very clean and very Hawaiian themed.
This place is a true enigma. I can't understand how they stay in business because they're never seems to be anyone in there. We tried the food once and it was truly mediocre. It would be the last place I would consider visiting again.
When we got home, we unpacked everything and began sampling the food. The mahi-mahi was extremely flat, dark, and tasted terrible - a complete waste of money. Tossed to the trash. The edamame were not fresh; they were a dark dull green that had not been seasoned. The salmon was tasty, but the chicken katsu contained some dark chicken that was dry, bland, and fried to a crisp. The macaroni salad is NOT Hawaiian it was bland like eating paper. We are not planning on returning because the food quality was subpar. I'm wondering where the owner and quality control are. This is NOT Hawaiian food.
Naw, a side of macaroni salad should be a full scoop not these tiny sauce containers. I regret the extra side, it tasted very vinegary.
A little on the expensive side for what you get. Flavors are ok. Service needs to be better - attendant was flippant, and careless - she took forever to enter my order and didnt know how to do subsitutions (I always try my best to order dishes that require little to no changes due to my allergies, but it was obvious she wasnt trained mentally or taskwise to respectfully handle someone with allergies). When I got the beep that my food was ready, no one was there as my plate sat on the counter out of reach, behind a box of supplies. I
I got the salmon, the girl assured me that is was a big as portion as the chicken however it was half. They don't take pride in their product and it wasn't that great. They fill you up on rice not protein. I do not recommend.
Decent portions, good quality ingredients but overall tasteless / very “white washed” Hawaiian. Proteins were good but sides were mediocre. Mac salad had no taste, just shells and mayo.
I keep going back and I can't anymore. The fish is low quality and inconsistent. Staff isn't all that friendly either! Some things on the menu aren't bad but it's inconsistent.- I posted this for my mom btw! I dont like leaving bad reviews
I'm a little torn on Nalu's. The food is usually good. My go to has always been the Chicken Katsu. Over the years, quality control has been a big issue. I've had orders with over-fried Katsu and they frequently forget to include the sauce. Their recipes are great, but they can be really forgetful and negligent toward their customers.
It was really bad and has ugly shape.
Meh. Waiting for their lease to expire at this location.
The staff very rude and lady work there with glasses doesn’t know any English that’s So wired . She doesn’t know even one word and after half an hour I waited to my order she said “ sorry we don’t have it” that’s so ridiculous .
They had a unscheduled break with sign saying “will be back at 4pm”. They re-opened at 4:10. Ordered salmon, they forgot mac salad. I got a cold steamed veggie.
I was eating and saw a long piece of hair in my food! Not only the hair there was something on the hair that looked black possibly a fly. Service is terrible guy was on the phone while doing our order. DO NOT RECOMMEND
The new owner or person in charge was very rude, we asked for Pho or beef stew, and he said it was not on the menu and we could wait longer for it in a sarcastic aggressive tone. Really sad to see this level of service.
SEVERE FOOD POISONING, FAILED HEALTH INSPECTIONS I am a very active, healthy male in my 30s, and Nalu's Hawaiian Fish Grill almost killed me with their contaminated food. Search the OC Environmental Health Division website to see their terrifying history of repeated failed health inspections, and warn your neighbors! I wish I had known. On December 3, 2022, having had no other meals for approximately 16 hours and feeling great, I went to Nalu's at Quail Hill in Irvine, and had the spicy crunchy poke bowl. 4-6 hours later, I began experiencing horrible sharp stomach pain and cramps, sweating, chills, then severe vomiting (and more) commenced for the entire sleepless night to follow. I could not even hold down a sip of water. The next day I was still in pain, basically unable to move and dehydrated, and luckily was able to get a special IV treatment for food poisoning, which brought me back to life. It still took another full day and night to recover. It was quite possibly the sickest I have been in my life. I spoke with the OC Environmental Health Division, and they are well aware of Nalu's. Sadly, this is a "business friendly" county, and the restaurant can not be forcibly shut down unless there are visible rats running around, and even then only temporarily, as Nalu's failed the rodent/insect section of the inspection just last month (November 2022), in addition to failing almost every other part of the inspection related to cleanliness, including major violations of food contact surface sanitation. They have also repeatedly failed health inspections at their other locations, making it clear the owners have zero regard for the safety of their customers. Don't take my word for it. Check the County website mentioned above, and reading their inspection reports alone will make you ill. I am truly grateful this happened to me, instead of someone who was 80 years old with compromised health, because honestly, based on how sick I was, they may not have survived. Hopefully this review will save someone's life.
There is nothing even remotely Hawaiian about this place. My first experience many years ago was much more enjoyable. They got a simple Teri burger order completely wrong. No Teriyaki at all. The staff thought I couldn't understand what they were saying in Spanish and were rude for the most part calling me an a**hole for asking for my order. Will never go back.
Worst Hawaiian food I've had on the mainland. I would call it "Hawaiian Style". Meat had no taste, and they were very stingy with rice (???) and didn't even get a side mac salad with the largest bento.
Came all the way here (I live 2 hours away)and they were out of business despite Google indicating they weren’t. I tried to call their other locations to see if they were still open but none of them would answer their phones. So sad….it’s the end of an era, I’ve been going here since the early 2000s. I suspect sky rocketing rent and CA’s ridiculous minimum wage requirements made them go out of business
At approx. 5pm, I call to order pickup and they hang up. What the heck? As I live within walking distance and decided to go to Alberton's to get a whole chicken at half the price of what I was going to get here, I went in the store to inquire. I met a guy at the front (he's a heavy-set individual who wears white ear buds and a hat) and I asked him why he hung up on me? he claimed the phone does not work, but the phone clearly was working when I called him. I asked him if they were taking pick up orders and he said no, which is weird because they are open until 7:30. I then proceed to leave the store, and he and the other line cook started to laugh and giggle as I walked away. I looked back at them in disgust and the heavy-set individual at the front started cussing at me. Wonderful people, eh? Not sure I'd trust them with the food you put in your mouth
Don’t know if it’s fact or fiction but the two employees there tonight (Sat 2024JAN13 7p) claimed computer froze so they closed early while 8 customers wanted to order dinner. If fiction, you lost a lot of business because your employees didn’t want to stay open. Came back a week later 1/20 & this time excuse from same 2 guy for closing 7p is because they ran out of rice. Really, that’s one of the main staple item with every dish & they’re out? Owner needs to look into how these guys are causing lost business while getting paid for doing nothing the last hour the store is open. If you’re the owner, you’re losing business because your lazy workers make-up reasons to close the store early. Many others have told me they had the same experience. Fire them & get new people who want to work for a living.
