Overall I'd give it a 4.5, BUT rounded up to a 5 because our first time was honestly pretty awesome. We walked in without a reservation and thankfully got a seat at the bar. They were very busy, but the staff all worked together to get things done and make sure the diners were happy. We even got to meet JB's (the owner) mom who came by to say hi and make sure we were happy. We ordered a nice mix of dishes and enjoyed them all. If I had to say anything negative it would be that the lumpia wasn't my favorite. I've had lumpia before and this one was lacking in flavor. The FPJ was their take on a margarita and it was delicious. The Kilawin dish was very flavorful with a bit of spice. The plantains had a nice bit of sweetness to go with the spiciness. The Sizzling Sisig lived up to its name and arrived truly sizzling and was delicious over the Garlic Fried Rice. We were too full to try dessert but next to us Irene was enjoying her birthday and said the Tres Leches cake was delicious. A bit pricey so not sure how often we will be able to come, but definitely excited to come back and try more dishes.

Amazing atmosphere…it takes me back home. Our server and bussers were friendly and accommodating. The food is wonderful. I believe they just recently opened so the menu is limited but I would love to see more vegetarian options like my favorite, tofu sisig in the future and more filipino spirits like Don Papa and liqueur like Manille in their cocktails. The portion sizes are cute and I think they’re meant to be paired with cocktails! I’d say this place is best to bring friends and get tipsy!

Exceeded Every Expectation! I was honestly skeptical about trying another Filipino restaurant—I've been let down too many times. But Tropa completely changed my mind. We celebrated Friendsgiving here with a party of 10, and they were incredibly accommodating, even with my last-minute request for indoor seating. We ordered every item on the brunch menu (yes, every one!) and everything was delicious. My personal favorites were the lechon kawali—crispy on the outside, tender on the inside—and the Filipino BBQ (beef, chicken, and salmon), all packed with amazing flavor. Our server, Ryanne (sp?), was fantastic—super friendly, attentive, and professional. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and the service made the experience even better. Tropa is now our go-to spot for Filipino food. Highly recommend!

4+ stars for the food 5 stars for friendly staff, accommodating additional guests. Overall rounded up to 5. We ordered so much food and I forgot to take photos of everything. Will start with my favorites, the kilawin and sisig. The kilawin was similar to ceviche and served with chips. I had it with rice and it was so good. Fresh with acid and a bit of spiciness. The sisig also came out super hot with egg so good. We also had the lumpia, lechon kawali, adobo sticky ribs, grilled octopus, plantains, garlic rice, and adobo rice, and the steak skewers. I was not a fan of the octopus, though my kids enjoyed it. I did like the mango salad it came with. The sticky ribs were cooked to perfection but I found the flavor a bit lacking. I shared a piece so perhaps the part I had didn't get it's share of the sauce. Everyone else loved them! The adobo rice was also a fan favorite. I'm not usually a huge fan of lumpia, but their lumpia were extra large and flavorful. They came out piping hot too (which was great on such a cold night!) While they were fine, I will likely pass on the plantains in favor of trying something new. Service was friendly, quick, and they came out relatively frequently to refill drinks and they accommodated extra people in our party (though there was some confusion with the location of our table). Sadly we didn't have time for dessert. Hopefully we can go back and make time for the turon.

Came here on a Thursday for my birthday dinner. The food was delicious. We had so much food and a couple desserts. My favorite was the sticky ribs. It was fall off the bone ribs. The Kare kare had a little curry taste to it which I wasn’t used to but still good. The banana turon was delicious. The owner even came by each table to greet us and make sure everything was ok. The inside is very pretty. Just what I would see in the Philippines or my Lola’s house. Food came out pretty fast too. I will definitely come back to try the other items on the menu.

What a fine! Great ambience, excellent food, and amazing service from the staff. This restaurant is only 2 months old and we were pleasantly surprised by the food quality. Loved the salmon belly skewers (my favorite), the sticky adobe ribs was my next favorite, wished it could be a bit more tender but sauce is delicious. We also had the fried lumpia appetizer stuffed with plantains. Will be back!!!

My wife and I visited a new restaurant in Lafayette and was very pleased. I made a reservation and enjoyed a lovely outdoor seating experience. The vibe was fantastic, and the food was excellent. Prices were reasonable, and the customer service was outstanding. The cocktails were impressive, and I tried several. I will definitely return to experience their Sunday brunch.

New favorite alert! Just had an unforgettable meal at Tropa Modern Filipino, and I’m still daydreaming about it. First things first — the ribs were the star of the show. Fall‑off‑the‑bone tender, perfectly seasoned, and glazed in a sauce that made me consider licking the plate (don’t worry, I used my fork… mostly). The pancit was absolutely amazing — each bite was like a hug from a Filipino grandma I never had. Fresh, flavorful, and full of that comforting, homey taste you crave. Let’s talk about the lumpia — hands‑down the best I’ve ever had. Crispy, golden perfection on the outside, and an explosion of savory goodness inside. I could eat a whole tray and still want more. Finally, a legit Filipino restaurant in the East Bay — and what a delicious way to celebrate it! If you haven’t tried Tropa Modern Filipino yet, run — don’t walk. This place is a love letter to Filipino food with a modern twist, and trust me, your taste buds will thank you.

Amazing food, amazing ambiance and amazing staff. My go to meal here is Pinoy BBQ steak, Garlic rice and Plantains. Although tonight I am trying out the Pinakbet stew for the first time and I’m pretty excited!!!

This spot is a unique mix of culture, fun and food. The garlic rice and Sizzling Sisig were amazing and worth the trip alone. The cocktail menu not only had some sublime drinks but provided a history lesson as well.

Authentic Filipino flavors! I love the kare-kare, sisig, and kilawin. The adobo ribs are super tender and delish! I’m coming back and try everything on the menu. Next time brunch!

I kid you not, this is some of the best food I’ve had in a while. And I’m Filipino, so I get particular about Filipino restaurants. The flavors are on point—their contemporary but doesn’t lose Filipino flavors. Every dish we ordered exceeded my expectations. The ambience is also super nice so perfect for a night out.

What an unexpected turn of events. We had made a reservation at the Hideout Kitchen and our gps took us here instead! I guess this is the owners second restaurant. We were not sure about the food since we had not tried Filipino cuisine but the minute we arrived the staff greeted us and offered some options for us. From the minute we sat down we had the best service and guidance on what they recommended. The staff was attentive and made sure we had everything we need. The ambiance on the patio was very romantic and we brought our small dog on the patio which was nice. I highly recommend the Pinoy BbQ, Insal, Tortang Talong (for vegetarians) and of course the plantains! Definitely can’t wait to come back ! Wishing this venue all the best as it is only open for one week.

Tropa delivers an incredible experience from start to finish. The modern Filipino dishes were absolutely delicious: creative, bold flavors without losing the comfort of the classics. The cocktails were just as impressive, beautifully crafted and perfectly balanced. What truly set the night apart was the service. Every team member was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming. I left an item behind by accident, and they went out of their way to retrieve it and keep it safe until I could pick it up. Shout out to Eddie! That kind of kindness and professionalism is rare and so appreciated. Can’t wait to come back and explore more of the menu! Highly recommend.

Absolutely loved this restaurant! Very cozy on the inside, R&B/soul music playing in the background, and best of all… amazing food. You MUST get the Lechon and adobo ribs. Can’t wait to come back again when it’s warm and sit in their outdoor patio area.

We had reservations and were seated right away. The restaurant filled up quickly after opening, which immediately told us we were in for something good. The ambiance is warm and inviting—modern yet cozy. While we sat inside, we noticed the patio looked just as charming and perfect for a relaxed meal. The music was another highlight—it instantly took us back to our childhood in the Philippines, which made the experience even more special. We ordered the lumpia, tocilog, sisig, and finished with tres leches for dessert. Every dish was beautifully plated, bursting with flavor, and authentically Filipino. The cocktail menu was both fun and creative, with drinks playfully named after Filipino pop culture references—a thoughtful touch that made us smile. What stood out most was how Tropa managed to elevate Filipino cuisine while staying true to its roots. It’s the perfect balance of tradition and innovation. We’re already looking forward to our next visit!

Tropa in Lafayette is hands-down one of the best Filipino dining experiences in the Bay Area. It’s casual, welcoming, and full of heart—exactly the kind of spot you end up recommending to everyone you know. The food? Absolutely incredible. Their crispy pork belly is golden perfection—crackling skin, tender meat, no shortcuts. The adobo is bold, garlicky, and slow-cooked with that deep, homey flavor that only comes from serious attention to detail. And if you see pancit palabok on the menu, order it immediately—it’s rich, savory, and perfectly balanced with the tangy shrimp sauce and crunchy chicharrón bits. The portions are generous, perfect for sharing (but you’ll probably want to keep it all to yourself), and the prices are more than fair for the quality. Tropa nails that tricky balance of staying true to Filipino tradition while bringing a fresh, modern edge. The vibe is chill and upbeat, with friendly service that feels genuine—not forced. Whether you’re Filipino and craving comfort food or just curious to explore the cuisine, Tropa makes you feel right at home.

Visiting the Lamorinda area this summer for a few weeks to get caught up with family and found out that Tropa just opened in Lafayette. We ordered 8 dishes off the menu and we were all very impressed with the authentic flavors! I married into a Filipino clan from San Diego and know what to expect from home cooked Filipino meals. Tropa was as close as I have had outside of National City. More importantly, my wife from Zambales and daughter (who is the Lamorinda local) agreed that Tropa and Chef JB are getting it right. The sisig was amazing, pancit was refreshing, pork belly was thankfully very crispy, and adobo sticky ribs were tender and tasty. Masarap Chef JB!

Sooo good!! JB, chef and owner of the Hideout kitchen, has done it again!! The drinks are very creative. I especially love the cocktail booklet and stories for each creation. The food is flavorful, complex and prepared with love. Each dish is so unique and portions are good. Be sure to make a reservation as the space is smaller than the old Hideout space.

It's nice to find a Filipino restaurant in downtown Lafayette. The ambience is cozy and eclectic. The outdoor seatings make up for the tight interiors. The food is good but the selections are typically. Price is reasonable considering the quality and location. What really stands out is the excellent service and good- spirited patrons that this resto attracts. Definitely worth the try. I they could highlight more Filipino ingredients like Ube and the likes.

Hidden away in a micro mall is Tropa, a new restaurant in Lafayette featuring Filapino food. Cocktails are good but $2-3 too much. Food is very tasty and filling. Jay was our waiter and was very pleasant. Indoor/outdoor. We will be back.

Tropa is a beautiful eatery tucked discreetly away in a small strip mall. The outdoor seating is right next to the parking lot, however, situated under a large tree strung with lights you almost forget where you are. Service was quick and attentive. I also give extra points for providing hooks for women's purses and take out bags. The dishes were delicious and well prepared and presented, but we were a bit disappointed at their Tortang Talong. We understand that this is Filipino cuisine reimagined, however it was no longer the dish that it was named for. We should have heeded the description on their menu: "breaded eggplant" and realized that it was not Tortang Talong. We also had the Lechon Kawali, which was missing the crunchy skin that we were accustomed to. I hope that those who have never had Filipino food before, are not surprised by the differences in their next Filipino food experience outside of Tropa. With that being said, I will emphasize that everything was delicious and we enjoyed the food as it was.

This restaurant has an amazing atmosphere, the staff is very nice, and the presentation of the food was perfect. This restaurant does not need any marketing gimmicks, but I recommend you look into their special Sunday brunches. I will leave you to search more on that. The food is enough. Definitely try their specialty drinks!

Pretty good. We got reservations since we had a party of five. The food was pretty good, though some were a bit too salty. My mom didn’t like it. The place has a nice ambiance and a nice outdoor seating area. It was a nice change from our normal dining experience. Parking was a little difficult, but at least there was an accessible space in the lot next to the restaurant. 3% was already charged to our bill.

Was excited to visit Tropa with friends.  We all like the other restaurants opened by the same chef. Sadly it did not live up to our expectations. The concept Modern Filipino food served family style.  The actual restaurant and the patio area are nicely appointed and there is a full bar. The drink menu has some interesting cocktails all named after famous Filipino people and I enjoyed the Maria Clara. For our food, we decided to share orders of the Adobo Sticky Ribs, Garlic Rice, Chicken Lumpia, Arroz ala Valenciana (think Filipino paella), Pancit Bihon and Grilled Octopus.  For dessert we went with the plantain & jackfruit with ube ice cream. Our best bites were the ribs (tender and tangy) the rice in the Arroz ala Valenciana  {the turmeric in the rice gave it color and a earthy flavor}, the octopus and the refreshing mango and cucumber salad (the salad had a nice spicy element as well with jalapeños mixed in) under it and dessert. The garlic rice didn't have much garlic flavor, the chicken lumpia lacked texture and flavor, the seafood in the Arroz tasted old or frozen not fresh.   (to be fair, when we told the staff about the seafood, they did discount that dish) The restaurant is new, so maybe they are working out some kinks, but I doubt I'll go back.  The value for the cost isn't there either. One major con, and something that is hard to fix is the volume of little wasps that were hovering over our outside table.  Flat out annoying.

Really wanted this place to be good. Got hooked by a sponsored IG post and my husband and I drove up from Oakland. Ordered a coffee (SO bitter. Jesus.) Lumpia (Don’t do it. Chicken Lumpia is a sin and it’s dry. On top of that they came out soggy which was so strange) Adobo ribs (Nah dawg. Mostly just sweet and not much else) Adobo Fried Rice (this was the MOST disappointing ever. It’s just their garlic fried rice with soy sauce on it. There’s no vinegar / lemon juice or acid flavor of any kind. There’s also no meat… Adding soy sauce to something does not make it adobo) Bangus (This was the only dish that was alright. Saved by their BANGIN’ sawsawan spicy vinegar. The garlic fried rice was ok, the garlic was burnt and it really overpowered some of the bites) Other notes, don’t eat outside during brunch. Their are bees and they hover all over your food. Whomever was in control of the music was AWFUL, would turn it up, turn it down, turn it up again. So loud sometimes. And did an odd “Mic Check, Check Check Check” Bruh it’s 10am what are you doing? I get it, if you’re in the area… I suppose it’s a gem. But I would highly suggest y’all drive to Oakland and hit up FOB Kitchen. They’ll give you a real Adobo Fried Rice and Bangus / Daing that has been soaked proper sour! The love is here, but the execution just fell short. Hopefully y’all get it together.
