We had low expectations, but being local we thought we would try it. It exceeded our expectations by far. The hash browns were perfection. The chili and fries were amazing! And very hot. Even the coffee was delicious. It definitely has a greasy spoon vibe, but that is part of the charm of the place. We will stop by again.
The food was great, big Hardy portions and great flavor. Probably the best coffee I've ever had in my life the waitress told me it was Farmer Brothers coffee and that I could get it on Amazon. Very cool wait staff. Atmosphere felt like a diner so nothing special but very clean
I really love this place it has such a great old fashion style and the food is just great.
The food was really good and the service was awesome. We came with a big group and the manager even opened another room so we could all sit together.
A must stop if you’re in the area or visiting Great food Excellent service Very nostalgic for Alice fans Try it, you’ll love it
I m kinda old fashioned so served me well. Friendly stuff , might need update on coating nothing modern same stuff but newer , that might shut complainers mouth .
Very welcoming diner, I like how quick on their toes they are as soon as you walk through the door. Very positive attitudes, I wish I know my waitress name- I think Rebecca or Angelica. She was very sweet. The whole crew is very nice. The food is delicious and the prices are doable. Thank you.
The food is great. I had 2 eggs scrambled, home fried potatoes, 3 strips of bacon and pancakes. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The pancakes were amazing thick like a cake and flavorful as they should be. Most resturants are thin, no flavor and full of sugar. The eggs nothing added and not to dry or burnt. Bacon good flavor not burnt. Coffee is good not burnt. Exceptional service and quick all the way around. I will definitely be back. They are open for breakfast and lunch. Closes at 2 o'clock. Open 7 days a week.
Its a Diner diner. Amazing staff, great food. Calm atmosphere. I cant stop eating here after work.
Great location and very nostalgic, especially if you remember the show.. off of historical grand avenue Food was very good and big servings for breakfast. We will be back, only thing that would make it better is if they dressed up like they did in the show and acted a lil more sassy..
I grew up watching Mel's Diner, so being able to eat here was awesome! I had biscuits and gravy with a side of grits! Those grits will be in my dreams, they were so creamy. Nice nostalgic place to eat. If you're in the area, I'd recommend stopping by, but don't tell the chef to Kiss Your Grits! Haha
I mean, how can you go wrong with a classic diner that was used for filming the TV show filmed at the ICONIC Mel’s Diner? I think the show was called Alice.. I remember watching as a young child.. ok I just dated myself here, lol. The menu is quite extensive. I ordered the breakfast burrito, which was absolutely huge. I was not even able to eat half of it. Hubby ordered the Arizona Skillet. He said it was really good. Our service from Melanie was great and we enjoyed the conversation while we were sitting at the counter. The interior is very classic, and probably the original interior from the 70s.. I personally liked that it was original. I would recommend coming here for a unique dining experience.
When I travel with my husband, we always look for hole in the wall diners. We look for good reviews, a location that is standalone and reminiscent of a dive. Those qualities equal great diner food! Mel’s Diner did not disappoint. I had breakfast and my husband had a burger for lunch. The food was delicious and I had the best hot chocolate that I have had in any Phoenix diner to date! Pricing was good too, as everything was super affordable. This diner is a little out of the way for us, but we’ll definitely make a special trip to come back!
I’ve wanted to eat here for ages after loving the TV show and I finally made it for breakfast during my visit. The staff was super friendly, the food tasted just like homemade meals from my childhood and I loved the Alice TV show photos everywhere. Our waitress was awesome and I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in town.
I always drove by this diner when it's closed, but finally I was able to stop by today on my way home. The customer service was welcoming, the service was quick, and the food was good too. We had Chicken Fried Steak and House Fries with substitutes of pancakes and the Arizona Skillet. After looking at the full menu they have I will be returning for the lunch part of their menu.
Better than Dennys in my opinion. Real bacon and sausage links are bigger, pancakes taste like they were not whipped up out of a box, grits were spot on and not lumpy and gross like Dennys. Server was super friendly and so was the rest of the staff. Very family friendly and it's obvious they keep regulars coming back for more. Cant wait to being the kids by, me and the hubby enjoyed everything!
Your classic diner with the feel of Happy Days. The employees are very helpful with speedy service, even when the place was packed they were very friendly and quick. The burger and fries were great. The burger was cooked perfectly to order and the fries were hot and crispy. I look forward to returning.
I was quite surprised upon finding and dining at a historical landmark. The food was extremely delicious, The service was phenomenal, The prices were unbelievable, The restrooms were cleaned & well stocked. The atmosphere was very comfortable and casual. This restaurant is favored by many locals. But most of it, I felt as if I was on the TV show. And that's because this was the actual filming location to the sitcom "Mel's Diner". However, you're not going to see Alice, Mel, Vera, or Flo. However, the staff will keep you quite entertained. I will forever be a customer here !!!
Food was awesome I had eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy and grits coffee. Rebecca was amazing and the place was like stepping back in time. Came from Indiana and I am so happy to see this place.
During my travel, this was my very first time in a diner! The staff is great! And actually to fast and prompting for a German. Haha! Before even being seated the waitress expected me being ready to order my drink. After not even a minute holding the menu she wanted to take my order ! Though I haven’t been through the first page yet! The atmosphere is very nice. Maybe a little dark. It’s hard to tell from the outside if it’s actually open. The food itself was good, though being surprised getting a fried steak. That was the only downside for me. I ordered country skillet. Staff is friendly, fast and efficient. The place is clean. Would definitely recommend.
Mel's Diner has a fun nostalgic feel and we were seated fast with drinks on the way. Our omelettes and sides came out quickly in huge portions that tasted great and were priced well. The place has plenty of booth and counter seating plus super friendly service with lots of check ins and easy parking.
My fiance and I came here for Lunch and it was Super good !!! He got the BLT sandwich with French fries. I got the BBQ pulled pork with Onion rings Sooooo Yummy. And it came with soup of the day which was beef stew . Everything was GREAT!! the beef of the strew was tender and flavorful . Our waitress was friendly and helpful . This place is great for breakfast lunch and dinner . Well recommended .
Food and service was good. The two servers we had were exceptionally helpful and friendly. I wish there had been more memorabilia from Alice but to be fair I didn't really have the time to look around to see if they had more than what was visible from the booth I was sitting in. I don't think they're open for dinner or at least not the day I was there.
Finally stopped into this quaint little restaurant after many years of driving by it. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant was used to film scenes from the television show “Mel’s Diner”. Lots of nostalgia around the restaurant. Staff were very friendly and had lots of regulars that seemed to come in there a lot. They have a huge coffee cup collection from many locations. The restaurant is definitely a hidden gem. I would highly recommend trying this restaurant. Well worth the money.
This place was awesome ! Food was good and the service was great - my coffee cup was never at a 1/2 way point, for me that was great. Service was superb I always had someone asking if I was good ( even though there was a sign at front saying they were hiring and were short staffed ) It was really pretty cool to come to place that was known for a historical show ( although I’d never heard about it ) I’d been driving by this place for a while and every time I remembered about this place it was closed ( 2 pm ) Perfect place to have breakfast if visiting from out of town Great prices on the menu and coffee is awesome. Plenty of parking and quick and kind service . Enjoy!
This is the 3rd time I've eaten here. Growing up in the seventies I watched the TV series pretty regularly. Since Polly Holiday just passed recently it felt like it was time to give the old place another visit. It's very much just a diner, but with reasonable prices, good food and good service.
Atmosphere inside feels very retro with a homely feel, nice and cozy in the inside. Reminiscence of another time with added nostalgia. I can hear all the crew member chattering and the noise of the past come alive. I’m ordering the French toast combo and my daughter is ordering the Denver. Can’t wait… food was delicious. Just v like any place else you got to be specific on your order cause they meaning every place messes up your order. Food is good. Don’t mind coming back more than once. Twice and then some. So head on down to Mel’s dinner . Right on grand off I 10 exit 19 th ave and turn right on cuver street than it’s right there to the left my friend…
If you remember the TV show Alice, this was the actual diner featured in the show located in Phoenix! Talk about nostalgia! Takes me back to my childhood memories of watching Alice and hearing Flo say, "Mel, kiss my grits!" A little run down, but the food is actually pretty good! Fast service and friendly staff! I'll be coming back here again!
As a new resident and a huge fan of the tv show Alice I had to go to the real Mel's Diner. The food was amazing! Glad it wasn't bad like Mel Sharples on the tv show. Friendly service! But no Flo, lol. Amazing experience
Very cool old school diner. They have a few pictures on the wall from when it was used to shoot Alice back in the late 70s. We got 2 eggs, corned beef hash, hashbrowns and toast. 3 eggs chicken fried steak and 2 pancakes. The portions are HUGE. We didn't come close to finishing it. It was good. Very typically diner food. Our waitress was great. Its definitely a place to come visit when youre in town.
Absolutely worth stopping in! Great food & nostalgia! The huge pork chop breakfast was well worth the price; seasoned & cooked well! Lunch special included home made chicken noodle soup. Will definitely make this a stop next time we're visiting from Tucson.
Great food excellent service short wait for a table but not to long, the prices are decent and the quality was great, no veterans discount but still a good place to eat.
Had the veggie burrito it was great. The staff was super friendly and they were totally on top with their coffee game. NEVER had to wait for a top off. The other customers were all super friendly as well. I can’t believe that I have lived in Phoenix 28 years and have never been here. I will definitely be going back.
We loved it. One of the best diner experiences I had. Service is so friendly, and the vibes were immaculate. Quiet, calming, and really feels like you're in the mid-20th century. I had the omelette with the gravy over it (can't remember the name), I loved it. Upgraded the side to pancakes and they were huge, fluffy, delicious. Partner got the French toast combo, also delicious. Great prices for the amount of food we get too
This is a hidden gem! This is the original restaurant that Mel's Diner was filmed. It's fun to see the nostalgia, but come for the food. It was freshly cooked and great tasting! Paired with great service This was a great experience! KISS MY GRITS is truly the phrase of the day. Loved this place.

We just love this gem! It has the cutest diner atmosphere, wonderful food and the most friendly staff! Great start to our Sunday!

The Historic TV Land Restaurant from the 70’s TV series, Alice! Very retro diner. Swinging bar seats, booths and art on the walls. The staff is overly friendly! Service was prompt at 11am! Food came out fast and was to order! Biscuits and Gravy is super bland unfortunately… it’s just white gravy on pre made biscuits… it is not sausage gravy. Eggs were perfect, hash browns were perfect. Sausage was pre made but tasted fine. Come by for the history and friendliness!
I stopped in here for breakfast this morning while I was out and about. I was greeted immediately upon walking in. The staff is very friendly and very attentive. The service is very good. I ordered a three cheese omelette which tasted good, the only bad thing I can say about it is that the cheese was not melted in the middle part of the omelette. The breakfast potatoes, on the other hand, were absolutely delicious. I'm not kidding when I say that they were the most tender and flavorful breakfast potatoes I have ever eaten.
Good solid breakfast place. Great wait staff. Not fancy! But I loved their waffles, light and crispy.
We had the jumbo shrimp with mash potatoes and coleslaw. I was not happy with the shrimp at all. They were not jumbo and I can tell they were.tye same kind you buy at the grocery pre-ready to fry. Mash potatos were delicious and so was the coleslaw. We had the chicken fried steak with white gravey, eggs, hash brown and pancakes. Which was delicious.
Remember that tv show from the 70's called "Alice"? The diner from that show was about a half mile from where my family and I stayed in Phoenix. We enjoyed a nice breakfast and excellent service from the friendly staff at Mel's Diner. The walls are lined with coffee mugs signed by guests and the menus feature photos of the cast. Fun visit and good old fashioned diner food. The biscuits and gravy are just okay. Hash browns could be crispier. Chicken fried steak and corned beef hash were excellent as well as the coffee. The service is great. Would visit again!
I had the French dip with fries, the meat was bland, store bought beef slices, fries were meh. GF had the BBQ pork sandwich with onion rings, it was tastier, onion rings were great. Next time, if there is one, I will probably try a burger or breakfast. It was neat to see the building that was used in the show Alice. Kiss my grits!
It was so neat visiting Mel's, the inspiration for the diner used in the old TV series "Alice." The food was wholesome and tasty. Definitely very good and ranking a notch or so below some of my very favorite diners, so above average though not quite in a league of its own. The chicken fried steak and eggs breakfast was worth ordering as was the clubhouse sandwich. The vanilla milkshake was exceptionally good tasting creamy and sweet without being hyper-sweet as most other places make their shakes. If in the downtown Phoenix area Mel's Diner is absolutely worth a visit.
It's a solid diner. It's diner food, so don't expect anything gourmet. With that said, the food was good. The gravy for the biscuit lacked flavor. The pancakes were great. The Arizona skillet was great. I will be back. The history of the diner being from the show called Alice is pretty good. It's all original and pretty well preserved. It was fun. Our waitress was very kind and knowledgeable about the menu. We will return.
Great old local diner! We have been going to the diner for many many years. The staff is quick and friendly! My favorite thing on the menu is the French Dip. Yummy!!
I really liked the food and the environment. Very warm and loving workers. I just couldn't stop looking at the twin brothers (one was on the grill the other was getting ready to leave) .... well at least I thought they where twins. Very handsome men i just wanted to let that be known. I just was wondering if the restaurant is a old show based theme then why isn't there anything that shows that inside the building like for example similar outfits that resemble the show. But thank you so much i really enjoyed the food is had the strawberry waffles 🧇 😋 😍
Finally made it to Mel's Diner! They have been here a long time, I have driven by for 20 years as a resident and even more as a visitor. The food is classic diner food that hits the spot. The servers were friendly and understanding of our kids. Pretty chill spot, not too loud for table conversations. We split a farmers omelette and had a biscuit with gravy. The gravy could use some sausage, otherwise it's pretty good. The omelette was meaty, just the way we like it!
I had an overall good experience at Mel's Diner. I do agree with some previous reviews in that the place could use some touching up at least outside. The grass around the sidewalk could use some chopping, but I didn't eat outside, so it can be overlooked. Inside, it's your typical old school diner. It has charm and nostalgia. It was clean, too. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was hot and very tasty. The iced tea had a clear taste, so I figured it was made with filtered water. The menu is extensive, so I will definitely return for lunch soon.
I visited the Mel’s Diner located at 1747 Grand Avenue in Phoenix, Arizona. Most people probably know that the outside of this restaurant was used in the television show, Alice, which aired from 1976 until 1985. When we walked in, there was a party of three waiting to be seated. While there were several people standing behind the counter, the party waited for a while until someone else finally seated them. My party of two waited a bit longer until the same person seated us. It seemed like a long wait, since someone behind the counter could have seated us, but in reality, I think we were only standing there about two minutes. Our server was pleasant and professional, and took our beverage order. We looked over the menu and found that the prices were competitive with other breakfast diners. When our server returned with our beverages, she took our food order. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak and my friend ordered a plate with biscuits and gravy, eggs, bacon and sausage. While we waited, we enjoyed listening to Classic Rock being played in the background at what old people would find to be a reasonable volume. For my tastes, it could have been louder and still allowed patrons to have a normal conversation. Our food was prepared reasonably quickly and my Chicken Fried Steak meal included hash browns, eggs and toast. My friend ordered his eggs over-easy, but he received them scrambled instead. He did receive the bacon portion of the meal, but the link sausage was missing. He opted not to complain about the discrepancies in his order. The food was good but we both agreed that the gravy tasted like it was poured from a 55 gallon drum; not freshly made from scratch. In hindsight, I set my expectations too high for this restaurant due to its history. With that said, the food was decent, the ambience was nice and I’d be willing to return to eat there again if I’m in the neighborhood.
Food was great and so was service. This is the Mel's Dinner from the old TV show. The only things missing was the cast!

They were very attentive. Checked in on us multiple times. Food was good . Would definitely go back
Totally stuck in the 80s. Literally nothing changed. Probably just the staff, who were super hardworking friendly and seasoned. The surrounding area is scary, homeless and their "stuff" were scattered all over the parking lot, and the vicinity. The thing that attracted me was the price and nostalgia, which we got. Food came out lickity split, fresh and hot. I got the veggie breakfast burrito. Not bad. I wished they used home fries instead hashbrowns, makes it crispy instead of soggy texture. Other than that the burrito was good. Son got the kids pancake with bacon. The pancake was too chewy he said.
This is a review based on one visit and one order... balance this with the 5 star reviews. Service was quick and responsive. My wife and I shared a Country Fried Steak skillet with 2 pancakes. The Country Fried Steak, cut into pieces, was excellent. But the base of "home fries" were more like pieces of boiled potatoes. The scrambled eggs were not traditional scrambled eggs but merely just eggs that they scrambled with a fork on the grill. The pancakes were OK but were probably just a bit over mixed (causing them to be just a bit chewy). If we lived locally, I would return again to see if this was a one time occurance, or just not the right thing to order from here.
Such a storied place, "Mel's Diner". But they don't have real butter. They don't have real maple syrup. I'd love to have the option of paying extra for a "side of" real butter or Maple Syrup. Sorry for the half eaten pictures of food, didn't think about posting until after talking about solutions with my table.
I recently visited the famous Mel's Diner, and while it wasn't a terrible experience, it left a lot to be desired. The food was just okay—not bad, but nothing special either. The orange juice had a strange taste, which was a bit off-putting, but on the bright side, the coffee was excellent. The service was friendly, and the staff were welcoming, which I appreciated. One thing that stood out, unfortunately, was the overall condition of the diner. Given its fame, I was expecting a clean and somewhat updated place. Instead, it felt outdated, and I couldn’t tell if that was intentional or just neglect. While I get the nostalgic charm of an old-style diner, it’s possible to have that vibe while keeping things fresh and clean. For instance, the coffee mugs displayed on the wall are a nice touch, but they clearly hadn’t been cleaned in a while. Ultimately, I’m glad I can finally say I’ve been to Mel’s Diner, but I don’t see myself returning anytime soon. For now, I’ll leave it at this: they can “Kiss my Grits.”
It's ok. Was busy fir breakfast so we got just one cup of coffee. She never came back with it. Food was ok nothing to brag about

Not good just plain, country fried steak batter was stil raw, pancakes over cooked no flavor on anything. Service was good. Diner smells funny and lack luster.

Ordered 1 bisquit and gravy, saw about five people that came after me fifteen min later served their food. No apologies no nothing, just real bad service.
I made the mistake and came here during the summer and it was horrible don’t even bother getting some coffee the diner was miserably hot with the fans on low barely working. The biscuits and gravy had no flavor and the bacon was microwave bacon. We had to ask each time we wanted coffee. Also fix your parking lot people go there because it’s Mel’s Diner have some respect for it’s history.
Terrible biscuits and gravy. The gravy was starchy, no spices, no meat. Tasted like eating flour. The bacon and eggs were good. Even at 45% full they made everyone wait 10-15 mins to get sat and since I chose the bar, I still had to wait that long to even get a menu or water. I’ve never seen a more unmotivated restaurant.
I walked in and was greeted by the hostess saying that they're backed up it's going to be a while. I asked if I could sit at the lunch counter and she said yes. As I said they're watching I was totally being ignored at the lunch counter which typically seats you right away. I asked for a menu and the manager came over and got mad saying that you're not mine. There are a lot of people in front of you. I said that I was sat down and he mentioned that is just a place for you to sit. I've read Past reviews and the food was said to be good but I've walked out after the instincts with the manager and didn't try anything. The place is also in a bad area and I would not recommend going to this place at all
The “gravy” has zero seasoning for one thing. The meat on the Reuben had the texture and taste as though it had been defrosted and then heated in a microwave. No seasoning on the French fries. And the pancakes were hard. The nostalgia is nice until you notice all the dust. My family had a good laugh on the way home, but honestly I’m a little sad that it’s gone so far down hill. Keep in mind in the photo I added the pepper.
