Had an absolutely lovely breakfast experience here during our stay at Thyme! The garden juice - fresh squeezed carrots apple and ginger was phenomenal as well as the seasonal fruit place and porridge. The outside garden area to sit is divine. Our server, Kelly was incredibly sweet, attentive and kind. We loved her!

Loved my experience at The Ox Barn! The ingredients are super fresh and you can really taste the quality in every dish. Great flavours, friendly service, and a lovely atmosphere. Definitely coming back!

Cool, calm and quick to grow on you. It's very easy to like this place as does great food, in a great setting, served up by great staff. 5 stars across the board for our visit. It was so good we went straight back the next day for lunch.

Exceptional service & food. They even allowed my extremely allergic son to bring his own food so there would be no cross contamination. Every bite of the braised lamb was heavenly, the duck liver was perfect & dessert was the icing on the cake!

Can’t believe people saying the food is “decent”. In all honesty, we’ve had a tough time finding good food in the UK countryside (French & American travelers) - finding that spots reviewed as good are often tasteless/bland. Seeing this spot had 3.9 stars baffled me. Tuna nicoise salad 10/10, beet/goat cheese chickpea pancake 10/10, steak 10/10, iced tea (love a non sweet ice tea) 10/10, veggie vignole 8/10 - we’ve loved everything we’ve eaten. Perhaps we fit the taste profile, but we will be here everyday on our week long stay in Southrop. The ambiance is lovely!! Workers are lovely. And the architecture & flora reminds me of my moms home (south of France). Nostalgic. Comforting. Tasteful. Thoughtful. High end. The dog also loves it :)

The menu changes with the seasons so won’t write what we ordered, but suffice it to say that you will not be disappointed. Food is amazing, and be sure to leave room for dessert. They source everything from Britain, including much right from their kitchen garden. Soaring ceilings and high morale staff uplift the spirits.

We had a wonderful meal in the Ox Barn for my daughter's 21st birthday. Nick and the staff were so kind and attentive and the food was fantastic. Thank you so much, can't wait to come back.

Had two really lovely meals here - love that they use lots of things from their gardens and seasonal ingredients. Really recommend getting anything with their lamb as some of the best we have ever had. Their pastry chef is amazing and dessert was fab - great vibes and fun music but can easily hear your table so they have pitched it just right. Come a bit early before your reservation to go to Bar Bar as well

Friends and I had a wonderful afternoon at the Ox Barn, and indeed at Thyme. The food was divine (particularly the steak), the setting is stunning, would highly recommend. The staff, overall, were very pleasant and attentive. Some (not all) of the younger members of the team, had an aroma of entitlement about them - service with a forced smile, as opposed to those who were very kind, and genuine. Everything else, was superb. We’ve already booked a date to return. Thank you, to most of the team at Thyme.

Sometimes, spontaneity pays dividends. Last Saturday evening we decided to make a booking and have dinner the Ox Barn at Thyme, Southrop. What a delight. Seldom if indeed ever have I enjoyed the venue, the food and the ambience to quite this extent. Driving into the estate offers an early morsel of the splendour and beauty the engulfs as you enter the truly magnificently renovated buildings. The restaurant itself is simply exquisite - dramatic beams, artwork and selective decoration (and the occasional sheep - I will leave that for future visitors to discover!) frame the extraordinary dining room. At the table, fine detail abounds, the menus are delightful, an elegant font providing an artistic announcement to the food that follows. The dining experience exemplifies the combination of exceptional ingredients and culinary skills. The wine list reflects the same refined and diverse themes with the entire experience brought together by a highly attentive brigade of staff. Thyme offers something that is potentially unique. It was an experience to savour and one which I will undoubtedly repeat.

Absolutely brilliant restaurant. Menu is both adventurous and classic at the same time, and all dishes were executed impeccably. The dining room is beautiful, and the surrounding gardens provide a background of bucolic serenity. Lovely drinks. Very warm and highly competent service and staff. Not cheap, but fair value given the obvious work involved in providing such a great offering in the middle of the countryside.

We came to the Ox Barn for our work Christmas dinner this week. We were so well looked after by James, he was very entertaining and informative about the dishes. The food was absolutely delicious and there is a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant. There were 10 of us in the party and we were all very impressed

Went for luch on a Thursday with six of us.. Beautiful barn and short but nice menu. Happy to accomodate the vegan in our midst. Cocktails were tasty, including the mocktail. Food was tast and well presented. The prix fix menue is very reasonably priced. Excellent rubarb and ginger sorbet. Only criticism of the food is the amount of salt- especially the starter salad was far too salty for our tastes.

Having quite complex dietary requirements, dining out can be tricky, but The Ox Barn makes outstandingly tasty and nutritious food easy and fuss-free. Having eaten there on several occasions, including a group of 10 - several of whom had allergies, and with children - staff were ‘swan like’ in their handling of everyone’s needs. All the staff are so welcoming, friendly, professional and clearly knowledgeable and passionate about the food and the way it is produced/ grown. James, in particular is a credit to the team - having served us when we first ate there several years ago, he took the time to understand our needs and explained the whole Thyme ethos and got us ‘hooked’! You really feel the effect of an independent, hands-on family run hotel and restaurant - the positivity runs through everything.

The Ox Barn is an absolutely stunning culinary option in the Cotswolds. The food is everything you could want a meal in the countryside to be - fresh from the garden and local purveyors, intentionally created with the season, and straight up delicious. The staff are so warm and welcoming, and the ambiance cannot be beat. Having dinner in the Ox Barn will be one of those moments you will think about for a while, and I cannot wait to come back!

Beautiful setting and grounds. We ate outside and we were given an artificial fire pit to keep off the chill and a blanket each. Small menu but great choices for all courses. Small wine, beer and cocktail menu but again good selection. The food was fantastic and I couldn't fault it! Every dish was served beautifully and the ingredients were extremely high quality and exceptionally fresh. We had an amazing meal from start to finish. The staff were attentive, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Definitely be returning with friends and I'd highly recommend if you like fine dining.

We enjoyed a well-prepared light lunch from the fixed price menu, which was very reasonably priced.

To start the picturesque setting of the ox barn is absolutely beautiful, and a fantastic place to sit and eat dinner. The service is polite and watchful without being overbearing and the food is largely very good, letting the seasonal ingredients speak for themselves accompanied by a menu that is small but appropriate for the setting. The only fault I could find in the food was that the oysters were quite gritty, which in a restaurant of the ox’s barns calibre is a bit disappointing, having said that the chicken was cooked to perfection and the simplicity of the dish allowed you to enjoy each ingredient for what it is, as in my opinion it should be. Another slight let down which for me is a trap that too many restaurants fall into is the verbiage on the menu being a bit over the top, if not bordering on pretentious. A menu should always be easily read and describes what you’re going to eat both simply and clearly. I would say to anyone hoping to be blown away by a plethora of different flavours and complicated pairings, thats just not what top restaurants do. You should be able to identify everything on the plate which was certainly the case here. Overall the ox barn is a great destination brimming with potential, but makes some clumsy mistakes that could be easily improved to take the experience to the next level.

Very nice atmosphere, excellent food. We were there early, so it was quiet, and servers were not really attentive.

Spent the weekend at Thyme for a countryside escape and had dinner at their in-house restaurant, Ox Barn. The setting is stunning—light, airy, and beautifully styled. It’s the kind of place that instantly slows you down (in a good way). The food was a bit hit and miss. We started with the tuna Niçoise and duck breast—both looked lovely and were decent, but nothing that really lingered in memory. I had the Brill for my main, which was cooked well but needed a bit more flavour to carry it. The steak was the standout—nicely done and satisfying—but for the price, I was expecting a little more depth and complexity. The staff were warm and friendly, which made the evening feel relaxed. That said, there were a few slips—our drinks order was forgotten at one point, and there didn’t seem to be much confidence when we asked about menu details or wine pairings. Nothing major, just small things that added up. Overall, Ox Barn is a beautiful spot and a lovely experience. The atmosphere does a lot of the heavy lifting—it just needs the food and service to meet it at the same level. Wouldn’t say don’t go, but I’d go in with slightly tempered expectations.

The venue, as reviews state, is stunning. When we arrived we had a drink. These are about £15-20 per glass. One of the glasses was not fully filled. We were informed they had run out but they’d reduce the price. A bit of an odd start. The waitress serving us then accidentally dropped one of the glasses, smashing and getting the drink over us. In fairness, she was embarrassed, apologetic & cleaned up as quickly as possible. Accidents happen but we then waited a while for it to be replaced. We were then asked to go to our dinner table. We were told it was because a bigger table was coming in. It felt abrupt & rushed especially when the delay was because of the accident. The restaurant and bar was also not busy to warrant the haste. At the table there was a brief acknowledgement that we were celebrating birthdays but it lacked enthusiasm. It would have been nice to receive a bit more of a fuss. Starters felt a bit small for the price point. Some tables received bread before starters. We did not receive any. It felt like it was forgotten as bread wasn’t on the menu and tables are set with plates and butter knives Long wait for mains. A few tables were waiting & felt like restaurant was short staffed. Only 1 of 4 main meals was correct. They had put through beef tartare instead of beef fillet. It took a while for the waiter to apologise and give an indication of how long the food will take. With all the issues happening, it was perhaps a few minutes too late. The food came, but they forgot to change our cutlery so we couldn’t cut through the beef as the knife given to us wasn’t shape enough. Again we had to wait to flag down the waiter. The main was nice, although as reviews say it’s a small portion. The waiting staff were not attentive to refill our wine and we had to pour ourselves. We also had to ask for more water. I’m not against pouring but when it’s a restaurant at a certain price point, you expect more attention. Had they regularly poured our wine, we may have ordered more wine. For dessert; I want to reiterate the lack of acknowledgement we were celebrating. I did not want or expect any freebie but it would have been nice to have had a candle or something. There were mistakes on the bill. Ironically they had under charged us I know most people, especially after a disappointing experience would have taken the win here but i did the honourable thing & I went to speak to one of the waiters. The bill was amendef. He kindly only charged us for 1 beef fillet. I didnt remove the service charge albeit in hindsight, removing it was probably warranted. The drinks at the start of the experience were not on the bill. I do not know if this was removed or they forgot to transfer it but if it was the former, they did not say it was to recognise the accident. Before leaving we popped into the Bar. This is because the venue has a range of beautiful sheep chairs. The bar man asked how our meal was and picked up that it wasn’t a perfect experience. He did offer us a free round of drinks. We turned it down but there were at least attempts to rectify. It is a shame, because it is a lovely venue and we had a fair bit of bad luck on the day but even if all the issues didn’t arise, I do agree with other reviews that the food is overpriced. If the bill was correct including the aperitifs it would have been over £500. I did not feel we had an experience that aligns with that pricing.

* review on restaurant only * Was here a few times - twice for lunch - really good - high price but great setting so we tried dinner - Good food but - really nice… but - well for the price a little underwhelming… I always review on value for money - I never mind paying a premium- Even big premium if it’s “worth it” I don’t believe here is - food - it’s OK - magnificent settings and brilliant service. Menu needs more description I know what I’m reading…- but a lot of people around me… a bit confused. (Including my guests) Will try again - but not for a while… Still thanks to all staff - service was Top Notch 👍

An amazing looking building set in lovely grounds sets the scene for this beautiful looking restaurant that is well set out. Sadly that's where my experience of what looked like a quality restaurant ended. Although the atmosphere was great inside and the place was decorated well 3 of our table of 6 were facing a large plane wall. Not even a picture on it, so we didn't get to take in any of the views that were on offer. The menu was good, although there was a series lack of vegetarian options (1 main course!) and I think if you're a vegan a phone call before booking would be highly recommended. The wine menu was rather small considering the availability of space they have and the prices increased rather steeply so if your on a budget you'll be limited to maybe one red and one white wine. Considering the price of the meals the service didn't match what you would expect from, what should be a quality restaurant. The staff weren't very knowledgeable or attentive to our table at all. I don't think our waitress even smiled at us. It almost felt slightly unwelcoming. I'd say it felt more like gastro pub service than a restaurant which was a shame. The food was well presented and although the starters were pretty tasty, everyone had to reach for the salt and pepper to season their main courses. I cant remember the last time I had to do this in a restaurant. The lamb looked very fatty and the fat hadn't been rendered down very well. The beef, although well cooked and looking good was a bit chewy and not melt in the mouth as you'd expect. Our side of Duck fat ratte potatoes were barely cooked and the fat seemed like a bit of an after thought for the dish. The only reason most of our dishes were empty at the end of the meal was because we had someone that eats three times as much as an average person. Otherwise everyone would have left something on their plate, not because there was too much, but because it lacked flavour or was too oily/fatty. Thankfully the salt and pepper mills are of good quality as they are well used!! Overall, despite its looks and cost, the food was average, the service was below average and it was only really the venue that makes it an attractive place to go.

Amazing food, fabulous location/barn. Service rather disappointing for a restaurant like this - young staff forgot some orders and hard to get their attention as they were liking at each other’s phones behind the bar.

M
Michael Chakrabarty

The setting and atmosphere of the venue is great, cannot fault that. This is the only reason why I have given 3 stars. I had ribeye, which whilst cooked lovely, was served with a garnish that conflicted with the flavour of the steak rather than enhance it. In all honesty, the interior design was a better talking point than the food, which was a real shame. There might be other items on the menu which are much much better, and the staff and cooks might have holiday season burn out, but this review reflects my honest thoughts.

M
Michelle Roycroft

Beautiful restaurant, poor service ..... held such promise as looked stunning , took too long to take our order and then over an hour to bring a salad starter ! Chefs looked on from behind the pass with little interest in getting food out quickly. Food was average, one starter was amazing but another was tasteless with barely a teaspoon of crab to be found and very small portions ! In general it's a stunning restaurant but the service and general disinterest let it down

What a disappointment 😥 We booked this as a special meal for our wedding anniversary, but I regret that I did. The space is beautiful and the location picturesque. The staff were unwelcoming and they showed me no flexibility to accommodate my vegetarian specifications. I was served half a burrata, which I was shocked by. Definitely not the Michelin standards that we expect, and made worse by the service.

J
Jamie Anderson

Lovely surroundings, but I was just hoping for better. It’s such a pretty location and feels so promising, but it doesn’t live up to expectations. For a £80 a head lunch (without alcohol, only 2 courses) it really needed to be exceptional, and it wasn’t. Service was very very slow and poorly paced. The menu was surprisingly unbalanced and lacking variety - two pork dishes out of 6 mains? And the food was nice but not great. Overseasoned starter and main. And the chips… goodness me. Terrible! Thick cut but bland and undercooked. So promising but just didn’t hit the mark. There are better options around. It’s just a shame that this felt like such a let down.

N
Nigel Pickford

Very disappointed - poor management needs addressing ! Went on through for lunch gave our names and details - told to sit anywhere - which we did a lovely corner table - had sat there for 5-10 minutes then asked for our names again (already supplied) - then we were asked to move tables (from a table we we were offered and were comfortable with by your head waiter “Dan”” - I explained that we were happy here and didn’t want to move but he was insistant so, despite, ignoring my arguments and making us feel very uncomfortable moved to a less desirable table. The table we left was not utilised and had one person sitting at it at a restaurant at not full capacity. I tried to talk to “Dan” about this awful situation and lack of empathy, but really did fall on deaf ears! Again later tried talking later to Dan but he was dismissive and patronising - really not a good look or feel! Mostly all staff were fabulous - but his attitude and service is really unacceptable in such a beautiful environment. In hospitality I've learned that people will often forget what you said, what you eat and drink, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.

We visited for an anniversary meal and, unfortunately, left very underwhelmed. While the food itself was quite nice, the pricing is completely out of proportion to what’s offered — especially when it comes to the drinks. £15 for a pint is simply unjustifiable and frankly feels like they’re taking advantage. To make matters worse, the staff were rude and unwelcoming, which really took away from what was supposed to be a special occasion. On top of everything, they automatically added a service charge to the bill. Service charges should be at the customer’s discretion, especially when the service doesn’t warrant it. Sadly, we won’t be returning. There are plenty of other places offering better value, friendlier service, and a more enjoyable overall experience

P
Phillip Davies

The setting and staff were fantastic in providing a very pleasant and excellent experience. However the quality of the food for the cost leaves a LOT to be desired. Charging prices for Michelin level food means an expectation is set that was not fulfilled, the food itself was not of a quality that was expected and the prices would need to be halved to reduce disappointment in the quality. It wasn’t poor but I was left feeling that I had been ripped off that tarnished the evening. There are better options nearby if staying at thyme and that would be my recommendation. Disappointing as the setting was fantastic, but they need to significantly improve the quality of the food or offer it at more suitable prices.

D
Digital Pro

Four of us dined at this restaurant last night, and it was one of the most disappointing experiences we’ve ever had. If this is what Michelin-level service is supposed to be, then I must be missing something. We all ordered the lamb, and each plate contained just three slices, as thin as tissue paper and completely stone cold. It seemed as if the chef had forgotten to heat it properly perhaps even in the microwave. The plates themselves were cold as well, which made it clear that our food had likely been sitting on the chef’s tray for at least 20 minutes before being served. When our food finally arrived, we had to wait an additional four to five minutes before calling a staff member to bring us cutlery without so much as an apology. I also noticed that the woman at the table next to us had to send her food back because it was cold. To top it off, they attempted to charge us over £20 for the service charge. Given the poor experience, I refused to pay it. Service charges should be an option on the card reader, allowing customers to select "yes" or "no." Why should I pay extra for someone to serve me cold food? I was truly disappointed that this restaurant holds a Michelin title. It seems that this recognition has led to overconfidence, resulting in a decline in both food quality and service. Please take this as constructive feedback rather than criticism.

I bought a voucher for my daughter and her husband. They had a lovely meal but on presenjting the voucher the waiter's attitude changed dramatically to one of anger and contempt. A lovely evening was ruined.

Looks good, but disappointing really. Nice place, nice plating, high prices, everything suggests quality. But the food is bland, and the service terrible. During our trip we found hair in the food twice. Staff were bemused. Forgot basic things. They don’t have a vegan menu but offer to remove animal products… then forget and give you the normal plate that then has to be taken back. They also bring plates to the wrong table and act annoyed that you’re not the right people. One of our party, facing the rest of the room said she spent most of the night watching waiters go from table to table trying to find the right place. So ultimately it tries to look like a high-end joint, but it’s a complete shambles. Style over substance. You get better service and quality at a regular pub.

L
L B

It’s actually shocking that this place is on the Michelin guide. While the service was top notch, and atmosphere ok, the food, which is supposed to be the star of the show was a massive let down. The wines were £19 for a small glass. When it came it tasted like a £5 per bottle wine from the corner shop. We had 3 course set meal and presentation wise it just kept getting worse. Starter was unnecessarily slathered in tons of mayo. Something that is meant to be eaten with bread wasn’t served with bread so had to get that as an extra. Why? Aren’t there better ways to upsell? Why serve an incomplete course to begin with? Pasta with mains was incredibly chewy and the greens served with it were stringy and woody. I appreciate trying to go with the foraging theme but if you’re using old growth then make sure to cook it properly? Dessert was simple creme caramel slapped on the plate. That’s it. No garnish, no creativity to be found. I wouldn’t be so harsh if the prices reflected the quality. But it didn’t. I had better meals in disappointing chain restaurants.
