Whoa Nellie Deli is a popular stop near Yosemite, known for surprisingly good food in a gas station setting. The fish tacos are a must-try, though some find them inconsistent. Expect large portions, fair prices, and a cool vibe with views of Mono Lake.

Best gas station tacos east of Sierra. Period! They have vegetarian chili. Who does vegetarian chili ? The corn bread was moist though. The fish tacos had less fish more salsa but it’s ok, they doing best with the fish they get. There is ample parking and the location is convenient. The decor is old western themed with lots of horse motifs. Food’s served fast and wait times are minimum. There is seating indoor and outdoors. You can and should buy camping stuff here if this is your last stop before entering Yosemite. Let me know if you find Nellie😅
We stopped in on our way into Yosemite and ordered the two item pizza. I've had better pizza for cheaper but how hot and fresh it came to us was well worth it especially on a cold night. My only complaint is with the tables, we had a booth and the bench was too close to the table on one side and super wide on the other side. I would've tried adjusting it but there were people on the other side, so it would be nice if they secured the benches so it was all even.
We had heard about this restaurant and decided to stop for lunch. The food was delicious, and the presentation was beautiful. There’s plenty of inside and outside seating. The connected gas station has a great souvenir shop where you can grab something to remember your trip by. I bought a HWY 395 sticker. The outside seating has a great view of Mono Lake.
A great little burger/sandwich joint just off HWY 395. Although pricey, it's a great chance to grab something to bring into Yosemite National Park or after leaving the park. The food isn't bad. There is plenty of seating inside and outside to enjoy your meal. Parking can be tricky. While there is some parking available in the lot, this is a popular stop during the summer and the lit gets full. Also, you may have to deal with oversized vehicles like RVs and trailers. There is parking also out on the street.
Stopped by Whoa Nellie Deli near Mono Lake and finally got to try their famous fish tacos—and yeah, they absolutely live up to the hype. One came topped with a sweet mango salsa that was honestly perfect—super fresh and added the right amount of brightness. The other had a slaw that brought some crunch and balance to the fried fish. Everything was stacked with flavor, and the portion was solid too. We sat outside and had a great view while eating, which made the whole experience even better. Definitely worth the stop if you’re in the area.
Stopped here with my son for dinner after coming down from Tioga Pass. This place has such a cool vibe! Beautiful view of Mono Lake in the background. Even a wine selection ;). I had the carnitas tacos - they were very tasty! The salad was a little challenging to eat, as the bowl was overstuffed, but was very good also.
Must stop! We made the drive from the Bay to Mammoth and a lot of places along the route close at 7 p.m. We found this place and are SO happy we waited to eat here instead of some of the other places we passed. This isn't really a deli, it's an amazing gem of a restaurant that is serving up quality and beautiful food that you wait hours for on the weekend in the Bay. The fish tacos are fresh, huge, and not greasy. The BBQ chicken sandwich is a massive chicken breast with a cranberry bbq sauce. And the fries, yaaasssss! They were PERFECT. Anytime I'm in the area hungry this will be the place I will recommend we go to.
Though the restaurant leans in the pricey side in my opinion, I had a great experience! I ordered the fish tacos - the mango salsa is DELICIOUS. Despite being attached to a gas station, it still has the feel of a sit down restaurant and has both indoor and outdoor seating. There’s also some fun merch and goodies (along with other typical convenience store offerings) inside.
We stopped to eat and the tacos were delicious, the buffalo meatloaf wasn't that great but it was our first time having something like that so maybe it just wasn't for us. Staff were really nice and friendly, fast service and nice view of lake eating outside. The shop had some nice souvenirs
Stopped here during our cross-country trip! The portions were massive, especially the “world famous fish tacos”—seriously, they were huge. While the food lacked a bit of flavor, the fries totally stole the show—crispy, golden, and delicious! Great views from the seating area, and they even have overflow and large vehicle parking, which is perfect for RVs and vans. A solid stop if you’re hungry and passing through!
I tried the House Special World Famous Fish Tacos, but I was really disappointed. The fried mahi-mahi wasn’t crispy at all, and the mango salsa and ginger coleslaw didn’t feel special. They had no flavor. It just didn’t taste good at all. However, the burger my husband ordered was really good! I recommend getting the burger instead of the fish tacos. Also, we didn’t order the pizza because there were no photos in the reviews, but the pizzas looked huge and lots of people were ordering them. 피시타코시키지마세열 햄버거는 존맛탱
We stop here whenever we are in the area for their BBQ chicken pizza. This visit we also ordered their fish tacos, side salad, cheeseburger with fries, and wild boar bbq special. Everything was good except the salad had a sweet and tart dressing that we weren't a fan of. Seat yourself. Counter order and they call your number. We were there on a Friday evening and the lines to order were a little confusing. At one point it was one line to two cashiers and then people started another separate line so it became two lines. You can imagine the people in the original line getting angry. Luckily, we had just ordered when this happened. Food took awhile to come out. The wild boar took a long time. It came out when everyone else were almost done eating. We like the mini market and souvenir shop inside the deli as well. Great place to pick up some gifts and snacks. There are lots of seating inside and outside. Outside has a nice view of Mono Lake.
Stopped here on our way home from Nevada. It's a very beautiful view! The food was pretty good. The burger I had tasted a little under seasoned. But I was very impressed with how clean it was. After we finished our meal outside on one of the picnic tables someone came out and wiped it down along with all the other tables! (Just nice to see they keep it clean and sanitary) there was a nice little cherry stand in the parking lot as well! Delicious cherries. Also the carrot cake is delicious!
Coming south from Lake Tahoe we wanted to get some lunch before entering Yosemite NP at the Tioga Pass gate. Last available stop is a tiny town called "Lee Vining." Sunday and the only place open was called "Nellie's Deli" now named Whoa Nellie Deli. Despite us being the 5th customer in the place and 3 wait staff (supposedly) on duty, it took 14 minutes to get menus. Took another 5 minutes to get glasses of water. We did not get any eating utensils, sodas, or napkins until our food arrived. Ordered a basic bacon cheeseburger and a "house specialty sandwich" resembling a "patty melt" made of turkey, bacon, and Swiss cheese. Big mistake. Both entrees came with steak fries that were limp and greasy. My house specialty sandwich was a greasy disaster of a pile. I had to eat part of it with a knife and fork. Wife's bacon cheeseburger quickly became just a cheeseburger as the bacon was partially cooked chewy gristle. Our soda glasses remained empty for 2/3 of our meal as our "waitress" never came back. Despite waiting arms and asking for service, we sat. While my wife finished her bacon-less cheeseburger, I could not get through more than half of my entree. The steak fries were inedible. Took another 10 minutes to get our check. Both of us seriously considered walking out! Left just enough cash to cover the bill - $45! Regret stopping here and actually warned 2 different couples coming in to "walk away." 3rd world service and food and tourist trap prices. Since our encounter, we have warned friends, family and colleagues through social media accounts to avoid Nellie's. Clearly this place has a locals following that defies logic. Additionally, Nellie's proves the point that it is unwise to eat where locals do as locals often do not venture out of their tiny comfort zone.
