I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Frontline Club for the second time, and I must say, it was just as fantastic as I remembered. The staff were exceptionally friendly and accommodating, making us feel welcome and valued from the moment we walked in. The food was incredible, with the standout dishes being the Frontline Fish Cake and the burger. Both were prepared to perfection and bursting with flavor. Despite it being a few years since our last visit, the quality of the food has remained consistently high. Overall, our experience at the Frontline Club was excellent. The combination of great food, friendly staff, and good value for money makes it a place I highly recommend. We look forward to returning again soon.
This restaurant is hidden away but well worth seeking out. It’s part of a private members’ club for foreign news correspondents but open to the public. The food was simple but excellent with good service and a nice atmosphere. It’s unusual with photos and flags and memories which adds to its unique charm. I’d definitely return.
I have been here at least 4 times now for food and for events. For a decent meal in London that wont break bank its a great choice and a bit of a hidden gem. The staff are always very accommodating and attentive. Glasses aren't empty for long and plates are cleared quickly. I have had a range of food from the menu both vegetarian and standard dishes all have been awesome. I had the Risotto a few weeks ago and it was one of the best I have ever eaten very creamy and full of flavour. I will keep coming back here and enjoying the changing menu and great service.
The jazz on the quality sound system played as we entered the beautifully lit, simple black decor and the attentive friendly waiter immediately welcomed us. The menu is broad and the food is good. The wines too impressed. Half a dozen single malt whiskies to choose from were appreciated. Recommended if you are looking for a much better eatery in the Paddington area.
Had a lovely meal today. It felt like it was one of the best in London. Ingredients from the farm were fresh and well cooked. The lunch dishes came with a very good taste and pleasant surprises. Lovely wine. My husband and I were searching for a venue for a party. We felt it is too good for a party. This restaurant should be enjoyed with your partners or adult family members. Will come again.
I love this restaurant. My wife and I ate here often when we lived close. It is very grown up, not a tourist place, food is very good British cuisine and the staff have been excellent over the years we came here, and still are. Must mention the decor which is very classy and of course absolutely iconic photographs on the wall. It is what this place is about.
The staff is very welcoming! The food was pretty good and delicious. We had plenty of dishes to choose from, all at very reasonable cost. The sticky toffee pudding was incredibly yummy!!! Recommended this British Restaurant. It is clean and comfortable, all adding to a romantic & relaxing atmosphere. Superb place to spend a lovely evening! Will visit again :)))
Popped in here for a bite to eat before getting the train. What a find, chap on the front door (possibly the manager others have mentioned) super friendly, offered me a couple of options for a table (was on my own, so chose to sit at the bar), amazing burger and a couple of glasses of house red. Highly recommended - one of those happy serendipitous discoveries.
The staff in the public restaurant downstairs are so good that I have been returning here regularly for five years. Junior, Julia and the team are a credit to Frontline. They make me feel welcomed and looked after. Great food and I can particularly recommend the chicken liver parfait. Just don’t tell everyone about this Paddington station-adjacent delight or there won’t be any room left for me!!!
Relaxed. Reasonable. Reliable. A very good option for those looking for proper food in the Paddington area and want something in the mid range bracket.
A real pleasure to spend the evening in such an interesting place full of character, style and history! 4 of us had a meal followed by coffee & cocktails. We thoroughly enjoyed our food and drinks & we thought the newly renovated areas were awesome too! Great value for money considering the restaurant location...
Had a great dinner last night. The lamb pie is superb; the lamb is tender and tasty. Service was attentive yet unobtrusive. Poached peaches for dessert were Devine. Will definitely eat here again when we return to London.
One of my favorite place in London. Best community, events, atmosphere, team and also food and drink. Come here even just for pizza or drinks for support independent journalism!
Visiting the Frontline Club restaurant was a work / social affair with a couple of colleagues and what a treat to find in Paddington. Across the road is an awesome magazine / travel bookshop which I think is the home to Monocle, so if you are early a great place to browse, I have never seen so many high quality and contemporary photography magazines / journals. This leads nicely on to the Frontline Club which is ‘is a gathering place for journalists, photographers and other likeminded people interested in international affairs and independent journalism’ with the brestauntrant open to non-members. The food choice was good and we were offered a range of specials of the day. We all were very pleased with our choices being a couple of starters of Steak tartare with Arlington hen’s egg and the Crispy Duck salad with lime and chilli dressing. For mains I supersised the special starter of Mules marinere and colleagues had the pork belly special and the Lemon sole with brown shrimp butter. All washed down from a well curated selection of ales and largers – it was a very hot day in early May! Our waitress was very knowledgeable and attentive. The photos posted with this review show that it not the largest restaurant and has quite a cosy but business like atmosphere; which I liked for eating out with colleagues and talking about ‘stuff’. The restaurant is utilised by members so you might recognize some of the correspondents that are in front of the camera, however you probably won’t know the ones from behind the camera, some of whose work is displayed on the walls. If you liked this review, please 'Like' it!
I've been to this place twice and both times were interesting. First time I ate something delicious and indulged in the atmosphere, one of its main assets, and the second time I just had a coffee (excellent) as I waited for somebody. During my last visit I noticed the interesting press photographs on the wall and also the list of upcoming talks, including one on nerve agents as a weapon of war. This is where foreign correspondents hang out and, presumably, people who want to hang out with them. If you're at a loose end at Paddington Station and you're not totally skint, this would be a good place to come and lunch.
Dining here felt like I was eating in one of those restaurants you see in the movies. You know the ones where the characters are talking over a nice meal in a sophisticated but relaxed and not pretentious restaurant? That's what this is like. The staff were superb, the food was absolutely delectable and the price is fair. The food is even grown on the owners farm! Can't beat it. I've been told that lots of journalists eat here but not sure how valid that is.
Great place to spend a Friday night. The food is delicious, and the atmosphere is extraordinary. Artur, the manager, is a very pleasant and welcoming person. Thanks for the warm experience.
Great atmosphere. Amazing and flavourful food. Great selection of wines. Staff very attentive to us! Would definitely visit again.
Dined here twice in my two nights in London this week. Staff, notably the lovely Desiree and Alex, were engaging and generous with their time. (Toured me though the club and interesting photos and artifacts from the photojournalism heritage). Wonderful conversation with one of the members last night (thank you, Tarquin), who clearly embodies the reverence and respect for history this community of wartime journalists and their cohorts have formed. Eager to return on my next trip. And not to be minimized, the food was spectacular.
Wonderful spot to hunker down in whilst your wife gives birth in the neighbouring hospital, instead of the shrieks of labouring women why not have a delicious pear and walnut salad with blue cheese and listen to some salsa music. Highly recommended.
Burrata for starters very nice. Main course fine fine. Very broad range of desserts. Good atmosphere. Staff very attentive and friendly. Good experience with my vegetarian cousin from Italy :)
What a fantastic venue! This is an authentic members' club, which we felt privileged to experience... and thank you Lukas for allowing us to explore the private exhibits and war photography sections. The food was a joy, inluding starter of fresh asparagus, followed by Lamb Wellington and seasonal greens, helped along with an excellent Rioja reserva. Full marks
I had a great time at the event last week - all the staff were lovely! Would definitely recommend to anyone who has a spare night in Padddinton.
The staff was great! The food was excellent! The atmosphere was great for the city. Love the photos on the wall that were fitting for the name of the restaurant.
Fantastic food (excellent portion size and outstanding quality / value). Wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. Incredible facilities. Brilliant staff. Thank you.
Great atmosphere, perfect food: we enjoyed everything, from the tasty and reasonably original ceviche to the scallops and the lemon sole. Ah, and good soup as well. Less than 40 quid p/p with one glass of wine, water, bread, 1 coffee and 1 pudding.
Simple British food done extremely well. Wine list is well constructed with a good selection, and great cocktails as well. Finally the service although slow at times is definitely considerate and well focused.
Place was packed to the brim but got a seat by the bar. Ordered a Haddock with fries and it was pretty good. Chef must have missed some of the fish bones but no harm done. Polite and friendly staff with fast service.
This is a strange place, its somewhat out of place where its located, at the same time, the food is pretty good. I guess i would say its good Gastropub food - Its good, solid without pretensions and a varied menu. The service is a bit up and down, but they seem to care, but be a little all at sea. Its a strange place, but very welcome in the strange part of London
Prone to overbooking popular events. Either that or they’re allowing too many organisers’ mates or club members to blag their way into events the public have paid nearly £20 to attend. Stood for nearly 90 mins (after which I just left), jammed alongside 20 others also standing at the back of a room whose only ventilation was the door held open — light streaming in while you watch a film. It’s ok to overbook a bit — a few people won’t show up and I want a place like this to survive financially — but not that much over. And if that was just blaggers, then make *them* stand, not paying customers. Or, if that’s not possible, simply offer refunds to any ticket holder that can’t get a seat. Given it 4 stars anyway b/c I’ve been here many times in the past and I’d like it to do well. I also hope they read this review and rein this nonsense in. Because until they do I’ll only be back if I know I can get there really early.
The food was absolutely delicious and its nice to know that all proceeds go to supporting the club, however I should not that the restaurant was very loud and it did feel overly expensive. Food Allergy Review: this was very well handled, although bit labeled on menus.
Really interesting place Great selection of booze upstairs some of it chosen by war correspondents from the world conflict zones. Restaurant downstairs. Really friendly staff. they also do special events. And you get to brush shoulders with some famous people
Paddington is a bit of a culinary wilderness. The Frontline Club is the answer. Solid favorites, well prepared, a strong wine list with reasonable mark-ups, and a sophisticated yet friendly environment. You'll have a good time and feel happy!
Found this place whilst out walking and went in for dinner. Lovely food, good service and the waitress was knowledgeable in what to recommend. Atmosphere is a little noisy as it got busy but still acceptable. It is a little pricy but worth it.
Delicious food and a lovely venue let down by poor service. I really enjoyed the seafood linguine but the service was slow and mistakes were being made with orders on other tables. I'll definitely visit again but hope they sort out the front of house issues.
What’s happened to the Frontline Club restaurant? I’ve been going there for years and it used to be one of my favourite places to eat near Paddington. I went last night with my friend, one of our usual haunts, and we were presented with menus which were laminated sides of A4, and the food choice had completely changed. It now bears no resemblance to what it was before, which makes this listing completely misleading. Before it was a good value, mid-priced, quality dishes, now it’s over-priced pub grub. Perfectly edible, but a massive let-down from what it was before. We asked the waiting staff and they all seemed rather forlorn and apologetic, as if they too were mourning the loss of the restaurant. I’m gutted!
Disappointed ! our club member booked a particular table that was given away before our on time arrival and our host was not pleased. We went downstairs and calmed down and enjoyed the evening but this was very poor in my opinion. Could have been handled better.
well don't go to this restaurant expecting to get the cheaper early evening and late night menu (also advertised on their website as pre- and post- event menus) We went to an event and when we requested the menu at 9.30 we were told it was "off". Given that we'd already sat down and had pre-dinner drinks, we were then forced to eat of the significantly more expensive menu. The food was lovely but I was not at all impressed with this rip-off attitude. If things are not available for that menu (as they claimed to be the case) then they need to provide alternatives, not assume that diners will simply cough up for the more expensive menu. At the very least (we'd booked the table for 9.30) advise the diners when they book, especially since it's still being advertised on their website.
no value at all, small portions. £68 per person for a micro starter (£12), micro main (£19) and dessert with 2 bottle of wine for 6 people. The "main" was composed by 2 tiny pieces of lamb, nothing special. If you like to go to a restaurant to eat, this is not the place for you. The food quality does not not justify such a high price. And I keep ask myself why pretentious restaurants like this should serve such a small portions. Is there any intrinsic reason?
It would have been helpful if they had up dated their Web page or Google post to tell us they were closed for the entire month of August. Leaving a hand written post it note on your front door is neither helpful nor professional. The one star review reflects that I was unable to rate the food, service or atmosphere because you were closed for the month. At least I had a nice walk to get there.
I was so excited about coming here after seeing the website and positive Google reviews but it was beyond disappointing... 6 of us came here for dinner on a weekday. We ordered several dishes but I’ll only comment on a few here. Halloumi Squash, Seed and Pomegranate Salad £9 - the halloumi looked nice but was very spongy and dry. I really don’t know how you can go wrong with halloumi but they did. Baked Aubergine Concasse, Mozzarella, Basil Pesto £15 - again, it looked nice but one bite of the aubergine and I couldn’t eat anymore. It was salty beyond belief and I usually have more salt than most people. Haddock & Chips, Mushy Peas, Tartare Sauce £16.50 - a few people ordered this but one of them was terrible. Soggy tasteless fish and cold chips so this one also wasn’t eaten. Not only was the food terrible but it took ridiculously long to arrive. We asked the staff several times and watched many new tables arrive, order and finish their food while we still waited. We almost got up to leave when our food arrived. I really want to put this to bad luck but I just don’t know... how could almost all of our food have been so bad? The manager was very apologetic but we had to proactively negotiate a discount, as they didn’t offer. Give this place a go if you’re sceptical of this review (seeing as so many others liked it on Google) but I won’t be returning.
Very disappointed with our experience. Waited 10 minutes for a menu, then another 10 to try and order drinks, went to the bar to order and was told I would be served at the table. Another waitstaff came to get our drinks order about 15 minutes later because it was forgotten. We had finished starters by this time and decided to get the bill and leave before mains. 75 minutes to make three simple mixed drinks which never arrived.
The vegetable curry was tasteless, its a shame because the interior is very nice. The waitress was trying to balance lots of costumers plus make the drinks, but she was also very cold and not communicative, almost rude.
