First time at this place. I bought Menudo and it was awesome. I will be going back for more. Helpful hint, if you take your own pot they will fill it up for you. It comes out cheaper to buy Menudo with your pot, rather than ordering individual plates. Menudo is only served Sat. And Sun.

Delicious tacos de carnitas! The tortillas are hand made and pretty big. Small hole in the wall restaurant with seating or food to go with delicious authentic Mexican food in East LA. They have a variety of different plates from breakfast to dinner. 👍🌯🥘🥤

Every time I visit ELA, I stop by La Canasta for breakfast or lunch. My favorite breakfast is Chilaquiles Verdes, huevos Rancheros, and for lunch chicharones en salsa Roja, 😋😋😋

This is a humble secret hideaway for great Michoacán style Mexican food! The exceptional cooking skills of Michoacán cuisine was a key factor in Mexico’s status as a World Patrimony cuisine! Only Mexico and France have this honor! Surprisingly few people realize this! The prices are very good and the quality is homemade style! The hand made tortillas are soft and tasty, so much I almost cried! Service is like you’d expect if you were visiting family! The man and woman that were there really love their job and their guests! I had pork ribs in green sauce which were superb! The rice and beans were exceptional! Gauge a good Mexican restaurant by its rice and beans folks! Simple sides yes but key in the flavor profile! Their burritos are phenomenal! Street parking and meter parking!

First off, if you like nice fancy places, this is not the place for you. The place is clean the people are nice, they're carnitas are some of the best I've ever had. Handmade tortillas, and the rice and beans were good.

This restaurant appears to be run by some senior citizens. In other words, someone's abuelita is preparing the food. We ordered chiles rellenos, tacos dorados, and chilaquiles rojos. All three plates were delicious. Limited street parking on Whittier but there's parking in the rear. I'm glad Yelp turned me on to this place. Oh! Their handmade corn tortillas were nice and thick. Held the chile rellenos well. Thanks, fellow Yelpers!

I Love the cordial greeting they give you. And how they hire older people and they all look very nice and pleasant. The food and coffee are so good. It's like your grandmother cooked your meal. Very original Mexican food. I Love it

If you are looking for a true "mom and pop" gem with authentic flavors, this is the place. We live in Ontario and we will gladly make the drive to East LA just to eat here—it is that good. You can tell the staff takes immense pride in everything they prepare. The food is incredibly delicious and tastes like a home-cooked meal. Their fresh, handmade tortillas are the real deal, and you can’t go wrong with the carnitas, chile verde, or the rice and beans. If you’re a fan of menudo, theirs is some of the best you’ll find. It’s rare to find a spot that stays this consistent and authentic. Definitely a must-visit if you’re in the area (or even if you aren't)!

I've tried several things from here. What I recommend and love is their carnitas and refried beans.

A homey, unsanitized, way less than pretentious, family operation. The folks here treated this gabacho very nicely. In Mexican restaurants I usually go for the carnitas. I did here as usual and was not disappointed. However the hand/home made tortillas and guacamole were the best I've ever had.

Old-school Mexican restaurant with awesome Guisados and handmade tortillas place kinda need some upgrades. Everything kind of looks old, but food is great. Parking it’s hard to find in the front. They have a parking in the back, but it’s kind of a hassle to park in the back. The ladies working there are nice and the food is fresh as well as the handmade tortillas. Try the Chicharron. It’s great. I will be back when I am in the area.

As a true test of good mexican meal are the beans and rice. Both were delicious. Sope was delicious as we're the chicharon. The chile for chips was exceptionally good.

The food here is good decent I would say but the only problem with this place is that the wait time is a bit high if you order a couple things it may take 25 to 30 minutes to be ready. But besides the wait the food is pretty good.

Was ok. Got a carne asada burrito. Not that good. Meat was not fresh. Was overcooked and was hard to chew. It had been sitting out for a while I guess. Service wasnt that great either. One lady too busy waiting on tables and other too busy on phone.

Food is good but the lady that works there always has an attitude and if she doesn't like u she is going to mess up ur food n tamper with it also the owner is very friendly but she covers up for her co workers not only that but they tax even if you are paying with EBT I wouldn't recommend confronting the co worker there she has a lot of hate in her heart n its sad when other raza behaves that way with there same raice 😔

Small portions, dry day old food, nothing seemed fresh. Place needs to be very deep cleaned and it also needs a facelift, very old furniture.
