Mr. Rice is a popular spot near UCLA known for generous portions of flavorful and authentic Chinese cuisine, especially their mixian noodle soups. Customers rave about the friendly, fast service and the mom-and-pop shop atmosphere. Some find the spice levels inconsistent or the restaurant not always the cleanest.

Tip: If you're sensitive to spice, be sure to specify 'non-spicy' when ordering the braised chicken rice. The jasmine green tea is also a cheap and potent favorite.

Food is super tasty! Portion is super generous and I can barely finish my meat. Had the spicy beef hot pot. Everything in the hotpot is delicious!
I've been here a couple times and it's my go-to Chinese food place in Westwood, I always get their mixian and its great every time, always helps to curb the craving
Very yummy! The rice noodles were very smooth. The flavors were plentiful. Will come here next time!
Mr Rice is my daughter’s go to place. She invited me to enjoy their food yesterday night, kinda impressed with delicious meal, seriously reminded me of the favorite taste from my past years .
Upon entering the restaurant I was immediately seated. The environment is incredibly fast-paced, so I got my meal ASAP. The beef hot pot was delicious and is perfect for the colder days. Absolutely cozy and did not disappoint.
We had double Chili Fatty Beef Mixian (medium Spicy), veggies & Pork Mixian, Two Braised Pig Feet W. Rice, signature Beef Sirloin W. Rice. Every single one of them are soooo good and so authentic! And the price is unbelievably cheap. The waiter and waitress are so nice! Must come.
I like the fatty spicy bowl of soup. Soo good!
I was a visiting fellow in UCLA Liver Transplant Department at Ronald Reagan Medical Centre back in 2012. Mr Noodle was my favourite spot for dining. Delicious food and good service. Miss UCLA and Mr Noodle. Leow, Malaysia
First time here. Extremely yummy hot pots and the smoothies are absolutely amazing. I almost had to buy a second one. Not that I was the least bit concerned, but they have a sign on the door that says they're doing indoor dining because everyone working there is vaccinated. The place is clean, small and intimate, and reasonably priced. I'll definitely be going there again.
The best comfort soup-type of foos in westwood village. I would eat here after class all the time when I lived in Westwood, and I still try and stop by here whenever I'm visiting campus. I love their kimchi beef mixian, not as sour/salty/spicy as a jjigae since the broth is a lot lighter and milder, but it works REALLY well with the chunks of brisket and pieces of kimchi they put in there. I always try to take some home but I never have leftovers, it's THAT comforting (especially on a cold day). Their other menu options including the hot pots and mixians have been great as well, and they always have a daily special. Keep in mind this is not family style but the portions are enormous and you'll very likely have leftovers to take home, so the price is a great value. Finally, the staff are the sweetest people in the world and they're really friendly so try and get to know them! (And they gave me complementary fruit on a hot day lol).
Love love this place. Their jasmine green tea is so good and potent and very cheap. If you’re a tea person and don’t need many toppings and just want quality tea then get it. I always get their spicy beef dry hot pot and the noodles are sooo good. Always a simple yet satisfying dinner. Service is always friendly, and you can order at the kiosk for pickup or dine in.
I and my friends went here frequently when I was still studying at UCLA. We sometimes ordered delivery as well. My favorite dishes were the braised chicken, and tomato noodles soup. And my favorite drink was the mung bean drink which helped me cool down my body. The restaurant was quite small, but the waiters were very nice, and the food portion was big also. I would recommend it
My son suggested this place, and it was great. It's not the usual americanized Chinese restaurant. I don't know which region they're from. I ordered the dry spicy beef noodles. It wasn't very spicy, but it was nicely numbing.
🥲oh my this is really good. Affordable price around UCLA campus. In fact I keep to come back to this place couple times in few days. It’s not nice to someone not speak mandarins or Cantonese tho but worth it a try I mean.
Q:What’s good here? —>A: definitely🍅 番茄肥牛mixian, any of the rice dishes(especially the signature sirloin or 猪脚饭), any of the火锅 options, 猪耳朵, QQtofu, osmanthus rice drink(if you like 酒酿flavor), Mung Bean smoothie. I’ve come alone or with friends before and it’s been good everytime! Also fast for takeout/delivery. I know customer service is a mixed bag for ppl— but honestly take them with a grain of salt and be patient with them and everything will be okay :) the prices are what I expected from a Westwood Chinese eatery :O so no surprises. I usually like coming here, I know I can count on their food to fill up my stomach if I haven’t eaten well in a while; especially when I want something nostalgic and hot to eat. It has been a great source of comfort after a days worth full of classes or exams.
Tried it a lot of times! My favorite is 雙椒牛肉米線. (Though I feel pretty spicy for little spicy 小辣). The cost is 13.03 including tax. Usually take 10 mins or so to be prepared. The owner is quite friendly! Cheap and delicious (everything, including the soup)!Recommended!
Very tasty (especially the broth and honestly also everything else)! Love eating here since I was a student and still loves it whenever I visit here!
Super delicious! Ordered the kimchi beef mixian and was not disappointed. Super generous portions, clean restaurant, and great service. Ordered up front.

Authentic Chinese cuisine is a must-try, featuring an abundance of noodles and toppings, generously served with meat. The deep, rich flavors are a testament to their culinary expertise, and my Asian parents approve of their dishes. Occasionally, they offer great deals on drinks. The service is swift and efficient. I particularly love their double fatty beef and tomato noodle soups.
Mr. Rice is my favorite restaurant in Westwood! The service is so friendly and sweet (they’re a mom and pop shop). The shop itself is cozy and food comes out fast. The soup is hearty and flavorful with a generous serving size. My favorites are the double chilli beef and the kimchi beef soup mixian.

So much more Chinese food in Westwood the past few years, Mr. Rice is one of the first of them. They have a greasy spoon vibe and a small but solid menu. Friends love the place, I'm pretty okay with it.
We go here a lot, both for dine in and take out. I really love the grandma’s dry mixian and the pork and tofu hot pot. The latter is quite a bit of food actually.
Had yunan special and kimchi beef. Very good soup. Lots of good flavor. Noodles are spaghetti noodles. Will try hot pot next time.
Smallish space probably holds no more than 40 diners. Self-order from the automated system if your written Chinese skills are rusty. Each bowl is made to order and takes 10 or 15 minutes to prepare. Water is self serve at the counter. Once delivered to your table, expect a hot, delicious bowl of your chosen protein, veggies and noodles with a side bowl of rice. I recommend the kimchi beef. Spice level can be customized, and mild is actually mild. Bowls are big enough to share, or take home the leftovers for another meal.
Really good flavor, meal cost $15~ there are different item choices to choose from, so you can kind of make you own meal. The beef soup was filled with beef flavor and good amount of spicy and sour to keep you wanting one more bite. Service is Asian cafe style, don't expect too much. But the staff is friendly.
Mr. Rice satisfies a craving, but can be inconsistent. I feel like towards the end of the night, there might just be less food in a dish as they are running out of ingredients, or when they are busy it feels less well prepared. In the two pictures included with my review, one is the hotpot (which is more expensive) but had significantly less food at the end of the night. Other than some inconsistency, pretty solid food.
The sausage is so small, not worth The chilled beef rice is good Its like mild, not spicy My friends mild is like no spicy

I come here a lot, but this time the 黄焖鸡米饭 braised chicken rice was too spicy because of the pepper. Hope they can make it non-spicy…

This is very authentic regional Chinese food. This is not American "Chinese food" so if you are expecting kung pao chicken, this is not your place.
The rice is cooked pretty badly--way too wet and the grains have become nearly unidentifiable mush. I've been here 3 times over 4 years as a UCLA student and I think the rice always tends to be too wet. The mixian is their specialty and is decent. Pretty okay place but the rice just makes me sad because good rice should be the basic component of a good meal.
Tried double spicy fat beef noodles. It tastes ok. But because of person preference I would like something less salty. I may want to try pig feet rice next time.
It was okay by LA standards. We ordered the Yunan Special Mixian. The broth was flavorful but blend and didn’t taste like quite like authentic Yunan rice noodle soup. The cold dish Spicy beef was the highlight of the whole meal.

I’ve been a regular at Mr. Rice for a long time, coming in almost weekly specifically for the beef stew with rice. For the most part, my experience here has been solid, which is why I keep coming back. However, I’ve noticed a decline in quality during my last few visits. The stew has started to taste quite bland compared to how it used to be. More concerningly, during my most recent visit, the stew was served barely warm, bordering on cold. In the past, the food always came out hot. Because it wasn't heated properly this time, I was actually worried about the safety of the meal. I really enjoy this spot and want to keep supporting it, but I hope the team pays more attention to seasoning consistency and ensuring the food is heated to a safe, hot temperature rather than letting it sit out. I’d love to see it get back to its usual high standard!
Sad story. I have been studying at ucla for five years, and I think food here is ok and service is not bad. HOWEVER, when I went there last time for lunch, the waitress there was really rude and made me angry. She kept asking me why I can't sit elsewhere and obviously the table she wanted me to sit has someone's bag there, it's occupied. She kept complaining about having no time to do the cleaning job for the table and questioned me "you can pick any table but why this one", which made me mad. I am a customer supposed to be seated but since no one was there to instruct so I picked my favorite. I don't know why she's treating people like this, is it because I am international student or because I speak Chinese? PLEASE don't ruin people's mood and treat people DIFFERENTLY!
One of the food runner coughs severely towards customers and the food does not worth the price. Zhangliang malatang and Mr. noodle plz if u like East Asian food
I ordered the chicken rice. Very poor taste and quality. The chicken pieces are HUGE. So is the mushroom size. The authentic one should have much smaller sizes. And the taste is very bland. Can’t believe the quality is from a Chinese restaurant in a Chinese population dense area.
As a person who almost never vomits, I had multiple severe vomits and fever after eating here. Avoid at all costs you don’t want to be like me.
Worst restaurant ever! Their got SERIOUS food sanitation problem: I got a bowl of rice with someone’s hair in it, and got a eye’s lashes on the curry fish-ball. They also had a worst service, every stuff there seems like hate you coming and being so rude and impolite. Overall their service and food worth nothing. DO NOT COME.
Definitely bad experience not because of food but because of the “service” if there is any. Strongly motivated to challenge and offend the (maybe Chinese speaking) customer, when their ordering machine did not work properly. The man and woman in the store came up with various reasons to scold customer like “you must forget to click pay”, “your card is problematic”, “you need to contact your bank”, etc, ruthlessly asked for different payment methods and tapped on your phone without a word. What is interesting is that they figured out this issue is due to the update and they made a call to ask for fixing of their machine shortly after. Finish the meal since my friend already took the seat, but keep in mind you have the possibility to be scolded as if you are a newbie cashier.
There is no hygiene, everything is dirty. I do not recommend anyone to come

A week ago, my daughter ate there and got food poisoning. She ordered the rice and beef. This place has to be reported to the L.A. County Dept of Public Health.
