Been here quite a few times expensive but big portions the whole point of dinner is the smoked ribs but make reservations this place is always packed at dinner faster service if you reserve but still expect a 40 min wait.

Growing up in the Northeast, barbecue is a flavor of potato chips. It's the brown sauce that goes on chicken or burgers before charring them on a propane grill. Down South they know you only get barbecue if you see a woodpile out back. Since I first saw that woodpile out back the Ole Smokehouse I knew they were the real deal. Everything that passed through their smoker on the way to my plate turned to mouthwatering gold every time. The brisket, the wings, the pulled pork all melt in your mouth and leave you tasting & smelling like a campfire. But I hadn't made my way out there in years, and I was shocked and scandalized to hear from coworkers that their fare had taken a turn for the worse recently: slow service, overcooked (or undercooked) food, no sense of concern when they complained. I decided to head a fact-finding mission to Madrid to investigate. The bartender greeted me within a minute of sitting at the bar. She immediately poured me a beer. I ordered the hillbilly burger rare with twice baked potato and an incredible appetizer, deep fried pork belly with cajun ranch. The pork belly was perfectly crisp, melting in the mouth, perfectly paired with the zesty dipping sauce. Ordering rare in the North Country usually gets you either medium or well-done, so I was pleasantly surprised to bite through their incomparable pulled pork into a red-centered half-pounder patty. The generous twice baked potato featured cheese, bacon, scallions, and sour cream: not the prettiest presentation I've seen, but looks don't matter when it tastes like heaven. Rumors of the Ole Smokehouse's decline have been grossly exaggerated. Everything is as good as it ever was.

We were a large group & used the outdoor pavilion. The food was good & frequently replenished. Service was friendly & efficient. Fun & casual & perfect for a big group.

They were very busy but also adequately staffed. The food was delicious and came out in a timely manner. Our server Nicole's smile and wonderful additude towards quality customer service is what also made it a great experience.

Pulled pork was really good, no sauce needed the flavor was so good. Mac n cheese was flavorful and creamy. Potato skins were crispy and well topped.

Excellent Barbecue. I have eaten barbecue all over the US, and I have to say this place is definitely one of the best, and certainly the best I have tasted in NY. I've eaten there a half dozen times now, and they have never disappointed me. Table service is above average, very friendly. Location leaves a bit to be desired, unless you're looking for a nice ride, because it is in the middle of nowhere. Food is far above average. If you want to know what excellent baby back ribs tastes like, pay them a visit.

Its been a while since I visited, but my experience here is one I won't likely forget. I visited with a group of 8 people without a reservation and the staff were very useful in getting us seated right away. Our waitress recognized that we were all college students and had probably just moved into Potsdam a few miles down the road, and made us feel welcome to the area. I ordered the barbecue pulled pork sandwich with fries, which was ready about 15 minutes later. The barbecue was great, and reminded me of my trip to Tennessee a few months earlier when I had real authentic barbecue. Again, our waitress was really kind and managed our table quickly and professionally, even though our table had 8 separate checks. I will definitely be visiting again when I'm back in the area.

Maybe it's me but when I hear the name Madrid I think of the movie Wild Hogs and this restaurant is just as note worthy! You can smell the delectable smoked meats in the parking lot (the smoker is out back). It's a hopping little place. The beef brisket was by far my favorite but the pulled pork was moist and flavorful. I had the baked beans (really good) and the smoked rice (really enjoyed it). The building itself reminds you of the wild west. The staff was friendly and attentive without being pushy. We both had combination plates which was more food than I could eat. I had the chicken and beef and my dining companion had pork and beef. Out in the middle of n no where but soooooooo worth the drive. (Will do again). Ok, so Part Two ~ and this is equally as "wow" as the first. After eating there we decided to have them do the food for our hunting camp wedding and ~ wow just wow is all I can say. Our guests LOVED the food as did we. We had them prepare the food (pulled pork and beef brisket) and had a friend pick up the food on the way to the wedding. The food was hot and well prepared. We had ample food for the price ~ and it was tasty. So ~ I DOUBLE recommend them - whether you're eating in or whether you get them to prepare food for an occasion they do not disappoint. All around IMPRESSIVE.

The meal was fantastic as well as the service. It was extremely busy but our waitress was still pleasant and a sense of humor. Best corn bread!!!

Went there for my Birthday dinner. Had not been in years. The burger was grilled to perfection. The blooming onion was beautiful. Can't wait to come again. Ya'll keep smokin♡

Excellent food overall, the service was great as well with a lot of choices on the menu to appease all. Brisket was phenomenal and the wife truly enjoyed her teriyaki Delmonico steak. Will visit again soon.

Usually get ribs from somewhere else but they were all out. this was the next closest spot and it’s the best thing that could have happened. Ribs are triple as good and even less expensive. A full rack can feed a family.

Love the atmosphere/ambience with it's wood and country vibe, and top notch friendly server. Everything was simply perfect! We all left stuffed!

The bbq was awesome! I'm from TN and this reminded me of home. We had a blooming onion, bacon, ranch fries, smoked bbq wings (so delicious), and a platter that had pulled pork, brisket, and ribs with a loaded baked potato and baked beans. All of the food was delicious. The server was very nice. Great little spot for great BBQ. Their cornbread was phenomenal.

Been to the Ole Smokehouse a few times and we really like the ribs,brisket and pulled pork. So we just had the opportunity to go to Pappy's Smokehouse in St Louis Missouri ( highly recommended around the world). We were very surprised that the Ole Smokehouse in Madrid NY was much better and I told the Manager about Madrid. We have been to 4 different Smokehouses and highly recommend the Ole Smokehouse in Madrid N.Y.

Waitress was good but needs a little more training. Just don't wait on your customers . Go back and ask if they need anything. Had to wave her over for water and more dressing. She would have got a bigger tip if she was on the ball. Overall excellent place to eat I'll be back soon.

Food for me was great. The service for me was great. I gave the atmosphere in this place a 3 star because it was so hot and muggy in there. Everyone was sweating it was so hot I had to keep going outside for air while waiting for food and after i ate. They need to put air conditioning in that place. No air circulation.

We arrived at an off time, so we were seated right away. They only had 2 beers on draft (but one of them was Sam Adams so I was happy). My fiancé had a cheeseburger with French fries and he said he really enjoyed it. I had the Pork BBQ sandwich with coleslaw, and sweet potato fries. The fries were AMAZING, I just wish there were more of them! The pulled pork was really good too. This was my second time here, and I will definitely go back.

Casual, unpretentious, and friendly atmosphere. Outstanding ribs. I was thrilled that their children's menu featured a kid's portion of their specialties (ribs and pulled pork)...so many places leave the kids to the standard hot dog/chicken tender/burger choice (they have those on the menu, too, btw), so it was nice for our son to be able to have his very own plate of ribs instead of scavenging off our plates. A refreshing option for good dining out in an area that has few reliables to choose from.

Country feel in a northern (and by northern I mean 30 miles from Canada) village. Unprentious, comfortable and easy going. They cook a damned good steak! The staff is friendly and the evening we got takeout the ugly sweater contest was about to begin. Service was good. Food was really good!

Service and food were fast!! I hadn't even finished my salad when the waitress brought the entree!! My wife & I both had the smoked Prime Rib special!! It was delicious!!! The only negative, was the lettuce in the salad seemed to be a bit old. "Rusty around the edges" Waitress was peofessional, not overly friendly!! Overall an awesome place to eat!!

Little in the greasy and cheesy side of things, but good food none the less. Just don't dress up when you go there. Jeans, cut off shirts, and trucker hats.

The signature brisket was meh. Not a lot of dining choices in the area, so if you're interested in anything remotely near BBQ this is it. Onion rings were very good. Burger was good and the ketchup, interestingly, was very good.

We love Ole Smokehouse, but it is over an hour drive so we rarely get to go. The last three times we have gone it has shown on Google as being open, while it was actually closed for whatever reason. Once again we made the trek out only to be disappointed by a sign in the window stating they are closed til September 16th due to a COVID exposure. I understand the need for closure, but they need to update their information so people don't waste their time and gas.

I have had great BBQ at a lot of places over the years and this just didn't meet the expectations. The Brisket and Ribs were dry and tough. Unfortunately the cornbread and the biscuit suffered from the same dryness.

This was a very subjective experience. If you have prior experience with the menu, it may help you in your ordering. As it stood, my first experience was underwhelming. I tried some steak and also some brisket, the steak was pretty solid, unfortunately the brisket was underwhelming (chewy and dry, requiring drowning in sauce). The one fountain drink refill rule adds to the higher prices, and the desserts were only alright. It really is a shame too, the service was excellent and once the dining room cleared out a bit the atmosphere was cozy and the smells inviting. But for the end cost, it could certainly be better.

Service was excellent food was ok ordered surf and turf thinking it was prime rib and lobster then found out it was shrimp and not sure what kind of steak and only four shrimp. Order rare burger and it was more medium. Sent it back and the cook dug into the middle and said it was rare so I just ate it rather than argue

Top notch service. Food is very meh. I would probably try to go elsewhere if it came up as an option again. There aren't many good restaurants in this area, so who knows, I may end up giving it another try. They were very understaffed, there was a 9 year old bussing tables and seating people, but they took the crowds in stride.

There was no soap in the men's room, and upon refilling our drinks I noticed our cups had been swapped. I did not have a straw when I handed the waitress my glass, received it back with a straw, clearly already used. The food was also painfully mediocre.

10/20/2018 Definitely not what it used to be. Disappointing. Not even a piece of lettuce or slice of tomato served with the burgers, asked to have it cooked medium, it was almost rare. French fry portions smaller than they used to be. Cole slaw not good either. They were also out of brisket!

Sides were delicious, absolutely awesome appetizers. Brisket piled high on my plate was a lie. So I hoped that it was was going to be awesome brisket, I was disappointed. So I hope it was just a bad day.

I’m so disappointed we ordered the chuck wagon takeout and when the wife picked it up couple things didn’t make it with the order no biggie went back and was fulfilled first the smoked chicken was so strong couldn’t eat it was like eating a charcoal briquette ,the brisket was dry not juicy at all not a lot of smoke flavor and the so called “ St. Louis ribs was a major disappointment more barbecue sauce than meat and what meat was there was over cooked kinda like Clark griswald eating the turkey on Christmas vacation movie only thing that was really good was the pulled pork and Mac and cheese potatoes were cold cornbread was very good for what was payed won’t ever eat it again and not sure if we will ever eat there again

Can't even say how the food was. Tried to visit for dinner on a Saturday night around 6pm and was informed that my family wouldn't even be sat because they had accepted a reservation for a party even though most of the dining area was empty. Hostess was very dismissive and didn't seem to care how much business was walking out the door for the amount of customers she was turning away. Definitely a waste of time to drive out to the middle of nowhere and not even be offered a wait time.

Food was far from good; steak was grey and grizzly; chicken under cooked snd rubbery. Decore has not changed in the 17 yrs I have occasioned the place - boring! Staff was not friendly or attentive. Won't be going back

Originally my family wanted to go to the smokehouse in Lisbon for mother's day but they were only taking reservations for 4 people because so many people were going there and the place is small. We decided to try the smokehouse in Madrid and I wish we did not. The ribs in Lisbon are cooked to perfection and are amazing. The ribs that most of my family ordered here were very overcooked and hard. They were black and looked burnt. The BBQ sauce was to spicy for some and the bread was very dry. My side salad was a little lettuce with a very small piece of tomato. Not what we expected at all. I suggest to go to the smokehouse in Lisbon. There food is way better. We just paid a lot of money for burned and dried out food. Will not return here. Definitely need to do better.

Others tell me it’s a decent place for dinner, so I’ve tried it a third time - but again it was another bad experience. We both ordered prime rib - hers was supposed to be well done, but it came rare. My prime rib was cooked correctly, but it was the toughest piece of meat I’ve ever been served - I even struggled to get it cut into pieces with the steak knife. Her green beans came to the table cold and uncooked, so her whole plate had to go back to the kitchen. I waited for her plate to come back, so that I could eat with her, but after ten minutes I ate and finished my dinner. The waitress asked if I wanted dessert, so I ordered some hoping to eat it while she ate her dinner which still hadn’t come back. Her plate and my dessert came and the waitress cleared all my dishes and took all of our utensils, so there we sat without any way to eat any of our food. When we finally got the waitresses attention, we explained that we were not having a good dining experience - but she didn’t really care, wouldn’t even consider adjusting the bill. We ended out taking more than two hours for this dinner. Strike three - we will never go there again. If you haven’t been to the ole Smokehouse before, don’t set your expectations too high.
