The food was absolutely impeccable, the atmosphere very cozy and relaxed. The drinks were top tier, the sugar plum was perfect! Salmon carpaccio and the bottleneck ribeye absolutely slapped, Chef John Levine is awesome! Our server Jake was also extremely attentive and good conversation during our dinner! Definitely get the table side bananas foster!
I have been to many steakhouses and I have never experienced such a sublime blend of flavors, atmosphere, phenomenal customer experience like I did at Rare. The chef Darleen prepared our lunch skillfully and we could taste her passion for food with the seasonings she chose. Katie our server was prompt, attentive, well educated on the menu and, quite friendly. I will be returning for sure along with bringing my friends and family. This restaurant provides stellar service in an elegant environment.
I took my wife here for her birthday last week and we very impressed! I chose to book a place we’ve never been and this one got pretty good reviews so I was excited to surprise her! Inside is very intimate and sophisticated and I assume since we went on a Tuesday night, it was not crowded nor was there any noise. We were greeted by Marilyn, who was super sweet and gave us all sorts of compliments (thank you). Our server, Raj, was very knowledgeable and took good care of us. My wife got the pistachio crusted sea bass and I got the filet, both were excellent. AND I can’t forget to mention the warm sourdough bread that came out before the meal. Oh, and the table across from us ordered bananas foster, we got to watch that being prepared. Thanks again for a great experience!
High class (but pricey) steakhouse experience in downtown Milwaukee. The popovers are to die for! The steak was good, but I wish it was a little closer to medium rare…that is the issue when you order a tomahawk I guess. Bone-in steaks are tough to cook properly…but it was still tasty! The sides were delicious. I left about as full as I’ve ever been.
We had been looking for the perfect opportunity to try this restaurant for years. When we planned to attend a show downtown, we decided it was finally time. We made a reservation and were promptly seated upon arrival. Our reservation was a bit early to accommodate the timing of the show, but it worked out perfectly. Although the restaurant is relatively new, it exudes the timeless charm of a classic steakhouse, complete with elegant dining booths and low lighting that creates a cozy and sophisticated atmosphere. The menu is well-curated--not overwhelmingly extensive but offering a variety of options. While we didn't receive a separate wine or cocktail menu, there were several appealing choices integrated into the main menu. Given the impressive wine cellar visible near our table, we assume a dedicated wine list might typically be available. For those not in the mood for steak, there's a decent selection of alternative entrees, though we opted for the steakhouse staples. We began our meal with soup--lobster bisque for me and French onion soup for my husband--both of which were excellent. For our main course, we chose steaks accompanied by sautéed mushrooms and truffle butter. Before our meal arrived, we were served warm, flaky popovers with maple butter, which were absolutely delicious. The lobster bisque was rich and flavorful, and the steaks were perfectly cooked and juicy. Every bite was a delight. The staff was attentive and thoughtful, ensuring we stayed on schedule for our show without feeling rushed. Though we briefly considered dessert, we decided against it since we didn't think we'd be able to finish. Still, the options sounded tempting. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our experience--the ambiance, service, and food exceeded our expectations. We'll definitely return!
Visiting from Chicago, and we ran into this beautiful and sexy steakhouse. The young lady at the door greeted us so kindly, and all the servers were super sweet. We loved everything we ordered. Steak, bone marrow, oysters, fries, salads, drinks on point, and the bread was the BEST I've ever had. Food was cooked to perfection, and tasted amazing. For dessert we had the Banana Foster, and OMG was in insanely good.
Very good service!!! Waiter's and Waitresses were top notch. Very helpful n accommodating. Appetizers pork belly and crab cake were excellent!!! Soup French Onion was solid. Waygu was excellent Japanese is very good. American Waygu was very flavorful and excellent surprisingly it was a bit fatty but that tasted great. Tomahawk was excellent n grilled as ordered!!! Overall excellent experience!! Didn't try the Lobster Bisque but was told same recipe past years. Its a cup of Lobster dumped into bowl n then the Bisque is poured around it. The scones ? Or bread with strawberry cream cheese spread very good n refreshing.
Very nice atmosphere, took a little longer for our chicken, but it was well worth the wait!
This place is an absolute gem. One of the best steak menus I’ve ever encountered. if you’re looking for an archetypal classic dining experience in Milwaukee this is the place to go. The ambiance is dimly lit, dark wood, and solid. You feel embraced as soon as you walk in from the very well lit and bright corporate lobby that it’s located in. We started with a half dozen oysters split between East and West coasts and they were incredibly fresh. The mignonette sauce was the best I’ve ever had. The lobster bisque was perfect in terms of taste and presentation. They serve fresh and gigantic popovers that made my wife, who has a generational family recipe, jealous. I ordered a bone in American Wagyu just as I ordered with side of delicious lobster mac n cheese. My wife ordered the ginger salmon which was done perfectly to her request. The wine list was extensive. We ordered one of the nicest Malbecs I’ve ever experienced. The whiskey selection was top notch even though it was lacking Weller. The aforementioned popovers are used to make the most incredible bread pudding my wife and I have ever had for desert. The cheesecake was incredible. The service was superb. Friendly, conversational, responsive without seeming overbearing. Our waiter described things in expert detail. The host was quite friendly and was so kind and genuine in hearing we enjoyed our dinner. The cost seemed quite reasonable for the sheer quality and quantity of food and drinks we ordered. We went at the end of January but looking forward to going back in nice weather when we can walk to the nearby lakefront afterwards. I’ve been to Carnevor a couple of times and would suggest Rare over it.
An amazing experience from beginning to end. We went here for my birthday, so we indulged a bit, and it was one of the best meals we've had in years. Everything started off well with Brooke's attentive service, a glass of Prosecco, and some freshly made popovers with strawberry butter. And things kept going well as we received our cocktails (Boulevardier and Sazerac) and our appetizers: a mix of fresh, plump oysters on the half shell, and an amazing pork belly dish with a cherry-chipotle cream and wilted chard. The next round was the heart of the meal: a perfectly cooked and notably flavorful NY Strip steak, perfectly seared scallops with cauliflower-potato puree and fennel, a bunch of sides, and an additional, indulgent treat: luscious Japanese Wagyu beef. We had never had Wagyu before, and now we're true believers. A tasty glass of Malbec made its way to the table, and at the end--it was my birthday--a complimentary piece of the most luscious chocolate cake that I've had. The main dining room, where we ate, is a beautiful and comfortable space, but we also got a few glimpses of the bar in back, and it is also inviting. Though we don't often splurge like this, we can see ourselves coming back soon for a less Gargantuan meal--in the dining room or at the bar--and enjoying a cocktail, that pork dish, and either the NY Strip or Wagyu again. There is some street parking available, if you're lucky to get it. But there's a parking garage adjacent (east) to the restaurant, and Rare will issue some kind of voucher to exempt or reduce the fee. We were unaware of that, so parked across the street. No big deal, though. This meal was exceptional, marvelous, and memorable.
This place has the best everything. Their duck fat fries are my favorite fries out of every kind I've ever tried. Their steaks are always seasoned and cooked absolutely perfectly. The atmosphere is so cozy and classy, it's wonderful for a special event, date or celebration. (I'd love to have my wedding reception here some day!) Back in the bar they often have someone playing piano and occasionally a singer too! We celebrated New Years here and I feel like it's a new tradition. You can't get service like this anywhere else.
Lunch like a boss at Rare Steakhouse 🥩✨ Their Executive Three-Course Lunch is a game changer—luxury, flavor, and impeccable service all wrapped into one! Here’s what we feasted on: 🍞 Freshly baked popovers — warm, airy perfection 🦞 Rich and velvety lobster bisque 🥗 Classic Caesar salad with the perfect anchovy kick 🥩 Juicy steak with crispy, golden frites 🍋 Refreshing lemon sorbet to finish Chef John Levine is making magic happen in his new kitchen, and it was a pleasure seeing him in action, alongside Chef Todd Leech. The space? Think masculine elegance—big leather booths, rich wood tones, and a wine selection that will impress 🍷 Perfect for power lunches, date nights, or when you just want to treat yourself. Rare, indeed.

On my 2024 Tour of Steakhouses, this was at the top of the list. Where do I even begin? First I have to say we were well taken care of by the General Manager Devante and our server Alex. Both individuals made the experience a 10/10. The location is easy to find right off of Michigan, near the lake. There is a garage across the street with affordable parking by the hour but Ubering is a safer bet because the cocktail menu is amazing. We sat in one of their gorgeous booths in the back by their library. Although their dining room isn't enormous, there are plenty of seats and two private rooms. I think they utilize them as general seating when they aren't booked for parties, but again, plenty of room in the dining area. The bar was also large with a decent amount of seating. We started with martinis and calamari. The calamari comes with a spicy and a sweet dipping sauce. Per Alex's recommendation, we split the chopped salad. It's full of vegetables that compliment each other perfectly. They also bring enormous flaky popovers with a honey butter. You'll start with half because they're so big, but you'll finish the whole thing because addicting. For dinner I had the NY Strip and my friend had the Bottleneck. Both were cooked perfectly. We went with creamed corn (very strong smoky flavor), broccolini, and lobster mac. The lobster mac had a generous amount of lobster so I was very happy. For dinner we split their crème brûlée special, which was s'more flavored. Yum! We each also got some espresso because all of that eating had us exhausted. Alex and Devante stopped by the table periodically to chat. We had such a great time making small talk and learning about the establishment. After dinner we explore their library which is full of vintage books. It's hard to choose a highlight to our trip because everything was perfection. We haven't stopped talking about our visit and are recommending everyone try out this top tier steakhouse!!
A wonderful restaurant with top-notch wait staff! The bone in ribeye was good, the lobster crab cake was delicious, the watermelon salad was good, the lobster bisque was delicious, the lobster mac and cheese was delicious, the brussel sprouts were good, the pop overs with the orange honey butter were amazing, the tableside bananas foster with banana bread was off the charts delish , the chocolate cake was good, and the bread pudding was tasty! A little pricey for the steaks, considering that is all you get with no salad. All-in-all an enjoyable meal!
Three of us went for a celebratory birthday on St. Patrick's Day, 2022. Our server, Quinn, was fantastic, explaining the menu very well and making pitch perfect recommendations for our steaks and sides. We had two of the aged ribeyes, one of the aged NY Strips, all three were fantastic, and cooked perfectly medium rare throughout. For sides we chose the wedge salad (best dressing I've ever had), the brussel sprouts, mac and cheese, and a mushroom medley, which was especially out of this world. We wanted a top notch experience with high quality, generous portions, and exquisite service. Quinn made sure we had all those and more. We'll definitely return and will request Quinn as our server if she's available!
Raj was absolutely amazing. His customer service was phenomenal. Thank you so so much.
My son and I wanted to enjoy a classic steakhouse while visiting Milwaukee. Rare Steakhouse provided all of the features and ambiance we sought. The dinner rolls were huge, delicious popover style offerings. My wedge had a delicious house prepared bleu cheese dressing, and my son’s lobster bisque was fantastic. The bone-in filet with Oscar preparation and the NY Strip with a Maryland crab cake topping were outstanding. Chocolate cake and coffee were a perfect bookend to the evening. Service was prompt and unobtrusive - the staff freely and easily assisted each other. Particular kudos to the valet, who was chasing down cars in a driving storm. A top notch evening in downtown Milwaukee.
We went here for a family dinner and it was amazing!!! We had Raj as our server and he was top notch! Raj knew everything about the menu and was able to answer any questions we had! Definitely ask for him to be your waiter when you go here! Raj even took a picture with us when we asked him to! You will not be disappointed! This was the best experience we have had at a steakhouse! Everything was delicious and we had no complaints!
The services was phenomenal, we actually sat at the bar is was very quiet during the time we came it was later in the afternoon. The food was delicious, warm & good portions.
We enjoyed an amazing first-time dining experience at Rare for our anniversary. The service was extraordinary from reception to the bar to the dining room. Our server was Charity and she was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly- she did a superlative job. We were able to have one of the rib cap steaks ( they only have a limited number each evening). It was amazing! We started with Oysters Rockefeller and they were some of the best we’ve ever had. We had the aforementioned rib cap, a bottleneck steak, and scallops for the main course. The asparagus was really fresh and the lobster mac and cheese is a must-not-miss. For dessert we enjoyed a delicious Bananas Foster prepared table-side by Charity. We enjoyed our dining experience at Rare very much and we’ll definitely be back!
Jake made some great wine suggestions as well as gave good conversation. Oh, the food? Yeah, we already knew that would be stellar. Note, the sides are meant to be shared!! The happy hour menu is decent, but the wagyu is off the charts.
Everything was absolutely phenomenal! I can't say enough good things about this place. From the incredibly friendly and helpful staff to our entertaining and informative waiter to the craft cocktails and food. Two of us split the gratin potatoes which were extra cheesy, melt in your mouth crispy brussel sprouts with goat cheese and the 18 oz. Delmonico steak plus 2 oz. of Waygu beef. The brussel sprouts were crispy on the edges but otherwise had a silky texture. The Delmonico is their own special cut where they remove some of the edge fat from a ribeye so you keep all the flavor but reduce some of the fat. It was dry aged which gave it fantastic flavor - perfectly seasoned and cooked. I'd never had Waygu beef before and it did not disappoint. I've never had beef that tender. Again, it was perfectly cooked and seasoned. The bourbon crisp cocktail had wonderful apple flavor without being too sweet and the old fashioned was great too! In addition to all of the exceptional food, we loved the old school atmosphere and plush booths around the perimeter. The decor just adds to the overall experience. Although it's a bit pricey, the food is well worth it. I'll definitely be back!
First time at this restaurant. Food was great. The steaks were cooked to perfection. Side dishes were tasty but the best part about this dinner was our server Raj. He was beyond amazing, kind and a great taste of humor. We simply loved it here and will definitely return.
We had a wonderful anniversary dinner at Rare. Cocktails were delish and we had a glass of wine with dinner. Our server, Raj, was knowledgable about the menu and very attentive. The manager, Devante, also checked on us during the dinner which we appreciated. Will definitely be back!
Upscale steakhouse with great ambiance. Got together for dinner with a group of friends from out of town. Everyone had great things to say about their meals. My filet was outstanding, and the cocktails were made very well. The staff is also very attentive and friendly.
Had a great experience at rare last night! I’m super picky with wine and our server was very knowledgeable on the wine list and gave me great recommendations. The food was perfectly presented and super tasty! I love the cozy feel of the restaurant, perfect vibe for date nights, family gatherings, friend outings, etc!!
I worked with John to organize a group dinner for 19 for my company’s Christmas party at Rare and we had such an amazing time. Everyone on the staff led by Raj and Daisy took such great care of us and made sure we had everything we need throughout the night. We had plenty of different requests that were all met by the amazing team at Rare. Our water and wine glasses were never empty. Every course of our meal and our (many) drinks were incredible and we cannot wait to visit Rare again.
We very much appreciated the thoughtfulness in creating the dishes! Chef Darlene out did herself and even visited our table to wish us a happy anniversary! Our server, Madison, represented the restaurant well describing each and every entrée and making thoughtful suggestions. The tomahawk steak was done perfectly and the sides complemented it well. The cream cheese cake was not overly sweet enhancing how tasty the fresh fruit compost was. In a day that service typically is lacking, Rare outdid themselves! Definitely coming back!
Wonderful Duck and Sea Bass entries. Great service from Nia and Charlie. Bananas Foster prepared by Chef John was delicious!
Had a wonderful night here. Server was busy but made sure to keep our table taken care of. Steak was delicious and cooked perfectly, will definitely be coming back.
The staff were so friendly yet professional. The lighting and the atmosphere felt like a warm hug. Highly recommend! Everything smelt and tasted amazing.
Jake was amazing. He had great service and was also very personable. I had a great time and will be visiting again!
I came here to celebrate my birthday and it was absolutely perfect. From the first sip of my French 75 to the very last bite, everything was phenomenal. The food was beautiful and delicious, the atmosphere was stunning, and Jake was so knowledgeable and helpful in guiding us through the menu and picking out our courses. He made the whole night feel effortless and special. Can’t wait to come back.
Had a great experience at RARE Steakhouse. Jake was our server and was extremely informative, attentive, and helpful throughout the night. His assistant Kaylee was also excellent and very on top of everything. The service felt polished but relaxed, and we never felt rushed or forgotten. The sea bass was very good, and the Sugarplum Fairy margarita was a fun, unique touch. Appetizers were solid, and the overall vibe of the restaurant made for a great evening. Would definitely recommend.
A True Gem of Milwaukee! Jake, Anna, And Kaylee were the definition of 5 star service. Not only welcoming and kind but truly jovial. We had the pleasure of experiencing their private dinning room. From the ambiance to decor all the way to ceiling mural, we were awestruck. The perfectly cooked and flavorful New York strip was the icing on top.
So I have tried 2 other steakhouse restaurants and I will say this place is my favorite. The service was awesome, very welcoming and friendly. The food was amazing, I'm one of the FEW that go to a steakhouse and ask for well done steak I know I know. Lol but it was perfect not over done, yes that's possible. To top it off We ordered banana foster for dessert and the manager came out and did the banana foster table side very awesome experience. Mother and daughter date was a success.
We were there to celebrate a birthday. Had an amazing experience. The food was delicious. Jake our server, very knowledgeable of the menu, made great suggestions and his customer service was A1 and we definitely will be visiting again
Raj was friendly and very professional! We had such a fun time! Chef Jon came from the kitchen delivering our food and even came back to make sure everything was delicious and hot! The general manager Katy was super friendly! We loved the banana Foster it was really hot! They even hang up your coats and have candy! Will be back again!
Service was excellent!! Recommendations were great. 1st time having waygu Japanese is the way 2 go !! American Waygu was very flavorful but did have alot of fat...which was tasty n good but. French Onion soup was OK. Didn't have lobster Bisque but its a lump of lobster n then the broth is poured around it. Sides were great. Pork belly was great. Crab cake was good n had hunks of crab
Expected being over priced for a steakhouse located downtown… but not worth it; not all food was to superior level. Steak was overly salted. Lobster Mac was average. The oyster Rockefeller and lobster bisque was great. Enjoyed the ambiance very much. It was awkward to seat us facing directly across from another couple. That seems senseless, considering we were the only two tables in the restaurant. Love the table bread, can’t say I’ll be back again soon to overpay what I can get at another local Milwaukee spot.
Atmosphere was fancy but you sit looking at everyone else so a little uncomfortable & definitely not private. Food was good. We ordered a baked potato & they ran out so we got the whipped which we were charged full price for. Since they ran out, we felt it would have been fair to give it to us free or at the price of the baked potato. Service was not the best. Have gotten better at fast food chains.
This used to be a great place for happy hour and for dinner. I was there two weeks ago and it felt like it was a restaurant in its death throes. They no longer had popovers (one of the reasons to go here), our server was new and poorly trained, there was no market fish, and there were only three tables in the restaurant occupied while their was a drunk man at the bar wearing all blue sweatpants being really loud. The broccolini was really bad. The steak was average, but I expected better for the same price as other milwaukee steakhouses. They must have some sort of deal with their landlord because this place isn’t it and has not been for several years. Hopefully they can turn it around and get back to their former glory when it first opened.
Most of the food was good, had to send a steak back for being over cooked. Service was absolutely awful. We were there for 2+ hours for an early meal at 4:30 before a comedy show, there weren’t many tables full, and the staff knew we were on a time crunch.
Unfortunately for us, Rare was a total miss. I’ve been there before so this could have been an off night but the main meal, our Tomahawk Steak, was so under cooked, it was still purple. Seeing as we paid $145, we did ask it be cooked longer. After we got it back, it was still rare. We asked for it to be Medium Rare. I understand it’s a larger cut of meat but when you go to a steakhouse that prides itself in the quality/cook of the meat, we did expect it to be cooked properly. The taste was terrible too. Not sure if recooking it changed the taste but it was inedible. Overall just an unacceptable experience. No one asked how it could be made better. We were kind of ignored after we asked for it to be cooked longer. Yes we were given a complementary cake slice by the server who twice said the steak was not cooked properly. Photo is from after it was refired.
Food was okay, not impressed for a$250 dinner. No bread basket when others diners had them and it wasn’t on the menu to purchase. We went out for my birthday dinner, we had 645 pm reservations. We were seated right away but unfortunately in the back library area that was too bright and close to other diners. We got a bottle of wine and the waiter was going over the steaks. My husband and I are steak lovers and excited to try this place. Well our waiter was going over the wet aged steaks and the waiter said “wet aged steaks are similar to your grocery store marinated steaks” umm yeah not words he should use when wanting $50+ for a steak. We asked how long they were wet aged etc he has to ask the chef. He came back with 30 days. We ordered two steaks and three sides. Everything came out within 10 minutes(way too quick), plates not piping hot like you’d expect at a steakhouse. Steak was hot but could be hotter. super strange how quick it came out. I had the filet, ordered medium it was a little over cooked but fine. We didn’t ordered any sauce, because a good steak doesn’t need a sauce, but my plate was swimming in juice, it didn’t effect the flavor it just wasn’t pretty to look at. We both got the truffle butter $5 extra on the side, which was good but we could have shared it. Our sides were all great. I don’t think we’ll return. I mean $250+ after tip and no bread basket even…
Way below expectations. The food is too salty and oily. Everything sinks in the oil. The service is not okay as well. The seats are very cramped. I don’t know why people want to spend much money here. I’ve been to many fancy steakhouses and this one is the worst.
The steak was not that impressive, especially for the price. The presentation of the steak wasn't taken into account. The sides were sub par. The service was whatever. If you want to get a superior steak go to lake park bistro. And tip the waiters there more than 25% because that is how a restaurant wins. Anyway this got too long. Hope this helps in your discovery of the restaurant you are looking for to take your hot date. Your welcome. Ask for the window seats at lake park bistro. The lake looks stunning from that side. Stunning.
I was there last Friday for an engagement party and it was one of the worst experience, staffs not friendly at all. They all walk around with a sad face and not once the server asks us if everything is going okay, they knew it was also a birthday celebration and we didn’t get a happy birthday nether. On top of that the food was not good and they included so much tip into the bill. If you include the tip in the bill now wonder why the staff care zero about service since they getting their money anyways. I wouldn’t go back and I wouldn’t recommend this place.
Horrible food experience. We have been coming to this restaurant for years. Always a favorite spot for enjoying a special occasion. First of all, they no longer serve their wonderful popovers, that made this restaurant special. The lobster bisque was so salty, I could not eat it. Their version of a wedge salad changed dramatically. It is made with a slice of fried cabbage, with a lot of various toppings that retracted from the overall taste. My husband had their small filet and it was very small. To compensate for our poor dinner, we had the bananas foster, which our waiter must have mentioned 6-7 times. It was good. But nothing to write home about. This was a very disappointing dinner and explains why there was only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant.
