I really liked this place! I went in after passing by the store a couple of times and am very glad to have went. The dishes are Izakaya styled, so a bit on smaller side but definitely tasty. We really liked the Wasabi Kanpachi, the Foie Gras Inari and the Citrus Salmon. These are great small snacks that make for a good drinking sesh and would go back again!

Really, really good motsu. It made me enjoy intestines! It was like eating the yummy fat off a T-bone steak. The pieces were small so easily chewed and swallowed. The flavor of the broth was great and the fatiness remained on my lips. I also really liked the liver sashimi- very fresh and mild taste balanced with that amazing sesame dip. And the matcha cocktail was fantastic - not too strong and the matcha flavor was balanced well by the ginger.

This place gets busy very fast and stays busy. Many people who came in group had to wait a bit, with as many as five groups lined up in front of them on the queue. So be sure you have reservations or patience. They are currently having a grand opening. All my photos of the food show after I've eaten more than a few bites. I couldn't wait. I came at around 7 alone, so I was at least able to get a seat at their bar. The place was packed. They have a standing space in the front for people to wait. It's nicely decorated with flowers and a bonsai display. The rest of the restaurant feels more bare of color, with the AC system exposed in the ceiling, simple metal stylings above the bar, gray floors, wooden stools and tables; all save fpt a green neon sign in the middle. The servers are very courteous even when busy and often are very occupied. I feel they might be understaffed or just overbooked possibly, but they are able to accommodate well enough for the dinner rush that they don't forget what you ordered and will come tell you if there has been any delays, which is appreciated. Their Motto is that they make everything with care, which might explain the wait time for the food, though the full house should also be taken into consideration. It's not an egregious wait time for food. For people waiting to get a table though, it could take a while since the atmosphere encourages people to linger. I had planned to order the chuhi red, but they were out of the carbonated shochu, I guess. I ordered the Suntory instead, with the tontoro and a gocha (earl Grey) cheese cake for dessert. As I sipped my beer, I could watch the Barkeeper serving other people at the rather packed bar. The seat I was on was a little wobbly, and the small surface area wasn't the most comfortable, compared to Tonchin in the same area. The tontoro is a hot dish served on a sizzling platter, so that takes a bit longer. It came hot with the chive sauce, which was sort of fun to pour on, save that it spattered a bit. But that's to be expected. The pork cheek comes with celery, and you can shift them around on the pan with the sauce to get them a little brown before eating. Despite the richness of the pork, the chives cut through entirely. The pork itself has a good, chewy mouthful. For dessert, the gocha cheesecake came with house-whipped cream and orange zest. Unfortunately, the orange zest was the dominant flavor and the delicate aroma and flavor of earl Grey was taking a backseat. However, the texture of the cake was great and rich, contrasting with the mild and light cream. The crust is also well baked, with good color. Overall, this was a fun experience. I suspect that once they get into the swing of opening back up, they will work out all their kinks and be even more popular than now, which would be nice.

It's my third time here and I would keep coming back here for how delicious the food tasted. This time we ordered the signature hotpot, the okonomiyaki, and the shrimp chili (which was tomato, egg, and shrimp). The shrimp chili was hands down the best item we've had here. Those three dishes were enough for us party of two. Its price point is a little on the higher end but I highly recommend it!

So many menu options! Inside was nice & clean. Service is professional & efficient. Recommend the salmon sashimi app, beef rolls app, gyoza, hot pot, and ice cream

A fun spot to come with friends. We ordered the shake shake ramen and it was a very fun experience. The ramen comes in a mason jar and the servers shake it at your table. The theatrics add a bit of fun to the dining experience

highly recommend this spot!! everything was spot on, but i’d recommend skipping the spring rolls (the filling was kind of a mixed stirfry), definitely recommend the goma hamachi, kara age, and the garlic pork belly skewer. the green tea tofu pudding dessert is also not to be missed! will be back again

The wrap had to be my fave! the sesame ice cream and cracker combo was so so tasty, and the hot pot was p big for it being the "small" size

This place offers some truly unique Japanese dishes you won't find anywhere else, like motsu-nabe and raw liver, etc. The food is absolutely authentic and delicious! The drinks are fantastic as well. It's like a trip back to Japan, and the service was great too!

Extremely happy experience with hakata tonton. Once you enter, you will be welcomed by very nice hostess, her happy vibe made me happy too 😄 Also, everyone in the restaurant was friendly and nice. Service 10 out of 10. Yes, this is about the restaurant review, let's talk about food. AMAZING. I got potato, mabo tofu, hot pot, and dessert. Hard to say it was OK, it was delicious!! Thank you hakata tonton made me to have amazing Saturday dinner!! Def will come back.

What an experience. The food was amazing. Definitely make a reservation ahead of time, went on a Sunday and it was packed. Go hungry for sure. Not to many places to hang coats, don’t carry a lot of stuff with you.

Wow, a truly amazing Japanese restaurant. Went here with a large group—The service was excellent, and the food was really nice. The hotpots had really nice flavor, and I would highly recommend getting the wraps as well. Left feeling very full, but in a hearty way :))

They have a larger area compared to their previous location so it's very easy to reserve seats here. The staff are really nice too and will gladly assist you to everything. In terms of the taste, my friend from Fukuoka approved of this place! Very authentic and pricing is standard of Midtown rates. They're having a lunch pop-up collab right now until Dec 29th so come try their teishoku. For the dinner menu, I highly suggest the Motsunabe and Mentai fried rice.

The food, dessert and service here are AMAZING!!! Would love to come here again to try other dishes for sure! MARU MARU POTATO was crispy outside and soft inside. The truffle cream was the highlight. Great appetizer. TONTON HOT POT was mild spicy and with lots of veggies. I like the flavor but hope there are more tofu and chicken in it. We added udon at the end of the meal. Very fulfilling. KOCHA CHEESECAKE stole the spotlight of the dinner. Rich cheesecake but the black tea flavor and lemon zest balanced the whole dessert. Really spot on!!! Staff was so helpful and friendly. The dining environment was clean and organized too. Nothing can be complained about this place.

One of my favorite restaurants! I first visited when they were at their old location, and was sad when they closed during COVID. But so glad that they reopened in a newer/larger location! Our group of 4 ordered a bunch of small plate to share. - Uni Scallop - Goma Hamachi - Kakuni Buns - Maru Maru Potato - Katsu Sandwich - Tonsoku Ponzu - Tontoro - Shake x2Ramen - Citrus Salmon - Tonton Hot Pot Everything was cooked well, had a ton of flavor, and just as good as I remembered. I personally love the tonsoku ponzu, tontoro, and uni scallop. Definitely will be back soon for more of their hot pot as it gets colder out.

New location, same great taste. More sitting in their new location , and great energetic vibe here. Ordered the okonomiyaki and the large traditional pork hotpot. The Okonomiyaki was fantastic. Crispy outer layer and a gooey soft center. Definitely order again next time. The hotpot was good too. Lots of green veggies , pork , and the broth was very savory. Was drinking the broth at points, it is that good. Server asked if we wanted noodles or congee to end our meal. Opted for the congee and it was great choice. The rice soaked up the broth and made for a comforting ending to our meal. Usually need a reservation for this place. Got lucky as we came early and asked for a table. Front host said 45 minutes but only took 15 minutes. Not bad.

Uni scallops were simple, but also good. Overall, food here is more ingredient focused rather than with a lot of sauce and oil, so it seemed a little less fusion-y. Sesame ice cream was good but a little sweet (but still finished the whole thing of course. Want to try the matcha tofu pudding next time!

Two Sundays ago, I woke up at 2 am, scrolled through TikTok, and stumbled upon a fun Japanese restaurant in NYC called Hakata Tonton. They offer an intriguing "Yum Cha" platter during their brunch service. "Yum Cha," which means "drink tea" in Cantonese, is a common phrase referring to the Cantonese tradition of enjoying brunch and tea. I felt inspired and decided to fly to NYC to try it out (thanks to my mileage award tickets!). I went directly from the airport to the restaurant. I ordered the platter and a hotpot to follow. I chose some genmai-cha (roasted brown rice with green tea) to accompany the platter. I began with some dumplings before diving into the platter. Though it was designed for two, I happily indulged in it by myself. The platter featured 10 different small dishes, each with two portions. Both visually appealing and delicious, I was impressed by the concept of a "Yum Cha" platter. My hotpot arrived shortly after I finished the platter. I opted for the motsu hotpot, which included spicy miso tonsoku broth, beef intestine, cabbage, chives, and dumpling skin. The beef intestine had the perfect chewiness, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Afterward, I spent some time exploring and relishing my day in NYC before flying back the next day. It was an absolute blast!

New place in Chinatown. We rode the bike in the city, looked to restaurant allowing us to place bikes in the restaurant. They were very kind to put our bikes. Foods are great, especially summer cold ramen. I loved it.

We went there cause my friend highly recommended their 🍲hot pot. And it turned out yes, the hot pot was greaaaat! This huge meal set for 2 was also good but same with my friend, hot pot is the one I will recommend to ppl. Desserts were also outstanding. 🍵Tofu was amazing, the sweetness with the bitter matcha shot. Match ice cream was super creamy and thick! The thin biscuit on the top and the crumbled brownies around made it to the next level💚

Love the food here, as good as 4 yrs ago. The Tonton hotpot is amazing, not enough for 2 people to share on the 1 people portion hotpot. The fried rice is good too. It's getting expensive now and less portion but I am sure I will come again many times as the food is soo good.

V
Vicki

Not only was the motsunabe satisfying, but the other izakaya food were also awesome. I especially loved the uni scallop and the tonsoku (pork foot). Could not decide which dessert to get so we got the platter and got to try everything. What a great time! No wonder there are so many Japanese salarymen there.

This new location is much more spacious than the old location, where it was almost impossible to get reservations the same week. Although I did not have a reservation, I was able to sit down and walk-in around 5:45, they did warn me that I need to free up my table by 7:30 for people with actual reservation. Service is fast, 1.5 hours would be ample to order and eat. Staff very friendly and accommodating, menu has also expanded with a lot of interesting choices, which allows for people who do not want to venture into the intestine or the trotter hotpots Must try their grilled prom trotters, I personally favor the garlic one because I’m a huge cilantro fan, but the ponzu and fashioned are also excellent choices. The new dessert menu is much better suited to western palates.

This place was amazing! It was a random find as the 1st place we wanted to go to had a 40min wait. The motsu hotpot was really unique, but our favs was def the cheesecake, the best cheesecake I've ever had! Service was so attentive and friendly, and the bathrooms were wellstocked and had bidets!

Always loved the original location in West village back in the day, glad that they are back! I've been here twice now at the current location, and both times have been amazing. Sashimi was super fresh and tasty, my friend actually said it was even better than an omakase he went to. Didn't even get a chance to snap a picture. The citrus salmon, wasabi kanpachi and pork skewers are great too. The ton ton fried rice and katsu sandwich were just ok, I would skip. Tasty drinks too, I recommend the hinoki for the old fashioned lovers. For dessert , the black sesame ice cream was the star, and I don't usually like black sesame. Can't wait to go back a third time!

K

I've been a big fan of this place since they were originally in the West Village. I'm so happy to have them open again, with the original chef, at this new and spacious location. The space is huge compared to their West Village shop. The flavor and menu are impeccably the same. And service is great. Every dish here is amazing - black cod, pork belly skewers, garlic fried rice, etc. But what everyone comes for is their pork flavored hot pot. It is so savory. The mountain of chives not only looks amazing but I also love the taste. I can never have enough of it. The new location does not offer add-ons on their menu like the old one. Also no options of rice or noodles in the pot at the end. But still everything tastes amazing and I will be back for more. Since the space is so much bigger, the wait is much more manageable. My group didn't really have to wait long arriving around 6:30 on a Saturday night.

J
Jea Kim

Had a fantastic brunch experience with the yum cha set. Presented beautifully on a large wooden tray, the set consisted of 11 dishes and a pot of tea. It had a good mix of raw and cooked dishes, and the tea and plum tomatoes worked nicely as palate cleansers in between the raw and cooked dishes. I liked the creativity exhibited on dishes like the eel canape and kani harumaki, and some of my other favorites include the mentai omelet and the kara age. Although we didn’t get to try their signature hot pot, the overall experience was very satisfying, and I highly recommend trying the yum cha set if you’re looking for an affordable omakase-style meal.

U
Uyen Nguyen

Good spot for Japanese food, but the wait can get pretty long so I'd suggest getting here a bit early. The small plates here a delicious! For the hot pot, you should get some udon or rice to eat it with. For the dessert, the roasted goma ice cream is my favorite.

The weather has gotten colder and we would like to have something warm so we visited Hakata Ton Ton again for their Motsu Hot Pot. We got their Ebi Mayo as appetizer and it wasn’t our type but looked good. We love their Pork Trotter so much but the portion was kind of small. Their classic Motsu Hot Pot is extremely delicious & satisfying in cold weather.

Had such a nice dinner last night! The vegetables in the hotpot and the broth were so good. Tomato with pickled vegetables was a little sour, but it was so fresh. The best was the dessert. Almond tofu with green tea was amazing! Highly recommended!!!

K

Walked in without a reservation and was seated right away (probably right before the dinner rush!). Hakata TonTon offers a wide variety of food that are seasoned perfectly. The uni-scallop skewers were fluffy with just the right amount of kick from the wasabi, the fried rice was heavenly without being oily, and the ebi chili was more on the sweeter end from the shrimp but the omelet beneath it was cooked perfectly, being a perfect balance of fluffy and silky. Highly recommend anything on the menu, but also recommend the amenities offered via restroom! Go to find out!

The foods are delicious. The blossomed tomato was less impressive than the picture, the gyoza was alright. We love the karage chickens and hotpot A (the one with pork belly and pork feet). Highly recommend to have it mild spicy level much better than not spicy at all. The restrooms were cleaned and stocked up. Overall the management needs to add more servers. The servers were nice, friendly and attentive but they cant handle too many customers at once

The pig decorations are so cute! I really enjoyed the avocado tofu and the Japanese style hot pot was perfect for a day after drinking. The okonomiyaki is great and I enjoyed their miso cocktail too.

Came here with a friend and didn’t expect it to be a hotpot place that now serves other food. The food itself is really good, I was pleased with everything I ate. The price is a bit higher since you have to get multiple items but it’s worth it in my opinion. The staff is super nice and friendly while the food comes out at a reasonable pace to have conversation with others, but it’s not too slow.

Great place! Will revisit. Prompt service, tasty dishes, sushi grade fish - so expect small portions. We ordered Kintaro Shochu on the rocks $10 (Barely based clear distilled alcohol), Goma Hamachi (baby yellowtail in mustard sauce), Yakiniku wrap (barbeque washu beef in scallion pancakes, pickled veggies, mayo), Tonton fried rice, bloomed tomato $7 (peeled tomato with pickled veggies), pepper chicken wings, and Roasted Goma ice cream (sesame flavor) for dessert. You will need two dishes per person to be full. Each dish was about $10-15 unless otherwise noted. I especially liked Shochu, Goma Hamachi, and sesame ice cream. The table had limited seating time. Paid $ 87 plus tip for two people - which is in average range. Another option is to order a platter of $75 for two people, which comes with 4 teas.

A spacious authentic Japanese restaurant with beautiful food presentation and wonderful service. The Yum Cha Set was big with a good assortment of small fresh dishes. My personal favs were the Sui Gyoza, a flavorful dumpling broth served in a teacup, and the Kani Harumaki, it’s similar to a taco with crab meat and glass noodles. Genmai-cha Tea was excellently roasted and went well with the meal, they refilled the tea jar for us too! The Tonton Dessert Platter was a delight. Got to sample all their desserts, fell in love with the black sesame ice cream, so nutty, so good. The rest were amazing too! The green tea almond tofu was the only exception, it was such a weird combo. My friend wasn’t into it either so maybe it’s an acquired taste lol. It was aesthetic though as the matcha drizzled on top of the tofu. What better way way to end a stressful week than a delicious Sunday lunch on a beautiful sunny day. Both the sets we ordered were creative and exquisite. There was not a single person in that restaurant who wasn’t snapping pics 😂 It is expensive, but the food is of high-quality AND tasty. The staff were soooo sweet too! They greeted us in Japanese 🥹 Definitely a place worth revisiting, maybe next time we’ll try their famous hotpot!

N
Natalie Kasipol

Such a good experience! I would definitely come back here for the dessert platter alone. The salmon and yellowtail were really good. The hotpot itself was just meh, I’ve had better else where. It was mainly just a giant pile of greens I didn’t particularly like and meat with lots of tiny bones. Now, the main star was definitely the dessert platter, full sizes of all their desserts, and all of them were so so good. It’s such a good deal and oh so filling on its own. The staff was super duper attentive maybe a bit much if you wanted some independence.

Even better than before! Motsunabe or intestine hot pot is delicious. Very hearty especially for the winter. We tried many of the items and they were all excellent! The dessert platter was amazing. Service was great! The whole tomato 🍅 salad was really refreshing. Great texture! Excellent flavor with the pickled onions and yuzu(?) flavor. The veal liver sashimi is fresh! You can definitely taste the that irony livery texture. Great with the sesame dip. The mapo tofu was surprisingly excellent! I would even say this us better than many of the szechuan eateries. Hakata does it right! The gravy is thick with that fragrant Mala flavor, just the right amount of spicy and tang. Came with rice. This was really excellent. The nabe itself was hearty and pretty good portion of intestines vs vegetables ratio. We finished this with champon noodles. The small portion of noodles is actually very small for two people. It's really a SINGLE portion. But was okay for two since we had other dishes. And finally we had the dessert platter with hot tea. Great value because we tried several desserts and almost all were delicious. The earl grey tea cheesecake was super good. The sesame ice was on point! The sorbet was refreshing! The almond tofu pudding was surprisingly light! The Macha ice cream is the only average item because there was no red bean paste and no mochi. I suggest adding some red bean paste and maybe a small mochi to top it. The hot tea at the end is definitely appreciated! This small but necessary hot tea made the meal so much better. Intestine could be a bit heavy and oily so the hot tea was definitely great at the end for digestion. Service was prompt and polite. Dishes came out on time and were cleared in good time. Overall a fantastic comeback!

I came here with a friend on a weekday night around 6:30PM with a reservation and we both enjoyed this place! For drinks, we ordered a Kiwi Chu-hi & Straweberry Chu-hi (I think that’s what they were called). Pretty refreshing, the flavors were subtle but still tasted good. For food, we ordered the Mentai Gnocchi, Citrus Salmon, and Tonton Hot Pot. The gnocchi was super soft and the mentaiko flavor was strong & really good. The citrus salmon was refreshing and delicious. The hot pot… 10/10!! It was full of vegetables and the broth was flavorful. When you have a little bit of broth and toppings left, they ask if you want to add rice or noodles (small or large size). We got a small size udon and it was lovely 😊 For dessert, we ordered the Kocha Cheese Cake, Roasted Goma Ice Cream. The ice cream was pretty good and I don’t even like sesame lol. The cheesecake was soft and light, it tasted good. I would definitely come back again to try their other dishes!

The TonTon plates are so cute! Although we were seated at the bar and hence weren’t able to get the famous hotpot, the small plates were delicious. My favorite of the night was the Yakiniku Wrap, a scallion pancake wrapped wagyu beef, flavored with the sweet soy sauce. The service was great with reasonably priced dishes.

I love this place!!! It’s well-priced if you do multiple small plates family style and the portion is great. The wagyu wrap is a MUST-ORDER, it is phenomenal. Everything we ordered was delicious, I will definitely be coming back to try more.

It was a wonderful experience, one I’ll never forget. The staff were extremely friendly, to say the least, and the food was out of this world. The mix of Asian and Japanese flavours will blow your tastebuds away to heaven. One of my favourite dishes of the night was the foie gras. The duck liver will melt in your mouth, flavours unstoppably seeping in. It was then combined with outstanding rice and bean curd skin, it fits perfectly. The fusion of taste don’t just add up to each other, they multiply each other and increase the already amazing tastiness. It was so good we had to order another plate. Next came the pork knuckles. We ordered both flavours, the vinegar and the garlic. Both were remarkable, but the garlic one was truly magnificent. Considering I’m not a huge fan of cilantro, it fitted surprisingly well with the extraordinary texture. The dessert was also exceptional. The cheesecake was a mixture of New York style and Japanese style, a soft crumbly exterior and a gooey interior. It wasn’t too sweet, but hit the spot. This spot is a must try, truly ground breaking. I am amazed and do recommend it for everyone.

This a hidden gem (believe it or not in Chinatown) a Japanese restaurant found is by far THE BEST discovery after the pandemic. The food is beautifully presented & dishes are delicious. Price is more than reasonable compared to Soho, midtown, or uptown. Service is also attentive, polite & prompt. Can’t ask for more these days with the burden of food cost, sales taxes , & 20%+ service charge, eating out is no longer fun & affordable + frequently deal w/ nasty food. I would like to give this new food establishment 6 STARS.

Short review- order the goma, kani, wagyu, tonsoku. Nabe/hot pot is alright. I went here a while with a group. The first thing that arrived was probably my favorite bite of the night which was the Goma Hamachi for $20 with baby yellowtail with scallion, seaweed, and sesame sauce which is poured table side. The hamachi was excellent quality being buttery with a soft texture and the nutty sesame sauce (said goma) worked nicely with it. This was excellent and I would recommend it heavily. Also very tasty was the Kani Harumaki for $14 with a blend of snow crab, pork, mushroom, and vegetables served with spring roll skin which came with a light soy based dipping sauce. There was a bit of sweetness, a bit of earthiness, and some richness and it all fit well with the crispy skin. This was very good as well and was decently portioned for the price point. Also very tasty was the Wagyu Yakiniku Wrap for $18 with BBQ washu beef with lettuce, pickled vegetables, and mayo wrapped in a scallion pancake. This was perhaps a bit messy due to the mayo as well as the sweet sauce especially when paired with the slightly oily pancake but the flavor was excellent. The beef quality was high and it had some sweetness to it but not too much so and the pickled vegetables added a nice crunch. The Tonsoku Ponzu for $13 with grilled pork feet with scallion and ponzu sauce is one of their signatures that you can't really find in many other Japanese spots. The dish of course has a lot of collagen so it's rich and fatty but the ponzu helps cut down the richness of the pork. There was also a Japanese hot sauce on the table which helped as well. This was also good though I would recommend more compared to other small plates to share. The Kara Age for $9 consisting of Japanese fried chicken with mala mayo was pretty standard outside of the price point being relatively cheaper for the portion size compared to most other places. The chicken was pretty tender though I have had much crispier versions before but I can't complain with the light batter and the amount of chicken given. Though the color was different, the mayo also didn't exactly have any type of mala seasoning either but it still worked with the chicken. The Koji Ebi Chili for $20 consisting of shrimp with sweet chili over egg omelette was pretty standard western Japanese/Yoshoku style comfort food. There was plenty of shrimp/ebi in there and the sweet chili was standard. I wish the egg was a bit fluffier but that is only a minor fault in an otherwise standard tasty dish. Last was our large main to share which was the Tonton Hotpot (or nabe) which is $68 for the large or $38 for the small and we got the large one which was large and fine. This came with pork feet, chicken thigh, pork belly, dumplings, tofu, vegetables, and your choice of soup where we got the spicy miso tonsoku soup. The primary meat in there was the tonsoku/pork feet with there being some thigh and a little bit of dumplings and pork belly. Outside of the size which is easily big enough for four people as it should be for the price point, it's hard not to compare it unfavorably to some other nabe spots such as Kimura or even some other recent ones such the izakaya Toriya on the LES which both had much better broths, a little more variety in terms of vegetables, and was not focused on one meat in particular. Possibly the motsu/intestine pot is better here but I would recommend sticking with their other dishes instead. This place is tasty with plenty of highlights and a worthy successor to the original excellent izakaya.

Delicious Japanese food! I went here with some friends and we got a bunch of "street food" type of dishes and they were all really enjoyable. The beef garlic fried rice was really tasty, so was the okonomoyaki. We also got the wagyu yakiniku wrap which was pretty unique. It tasted good but it reminded me strangely of a big mac. Not in a bad way! Prices were a little high for Chinatown but about standard for this kind of Japanese food. I was pleasantly surprised, I would definitely be back!

The food was delicious. I ordered the small tonton pot and the portion was enough for two. The fried oysters were delicious and came with a delicious sauce (I think it was mentaiko egg mayo but not 100% sure). The pork in the hot pot was so soft and delicious, and the dessert was a perfect not-too-sweetness. The service was also excellent. We had the pleasure of interacting with multiple staff members and they were all extremely friendly and welcoming.

For a delicious Japanese hotpot this is the spot. The food wad great. The Japanese hotpot was something I haven’t had in this style which was unique and enjoyable, even this time of year with the AC blasting in the restaurant. The chicken was super juicy and the mentai fried rice is a must try. The desserts were divine. My personal favorites were the cheese cake, pudding, and roast Goma ice cream. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Attentive to your needs. The bathroom had a nice selection of mouth wash, hair bands, feminine products, q-tips if needed which was a nice touch. Pro tip: go with in a group of 3-6 to be able to try more items on the menu.

Matcha Pudding was well balanced, silky and not overly sweet. I would come back just for that. The dim sum plate was nicely plated and different samples that will hit all your taste buds. One of those dishes, you get once just for the experience.

You don’t need to read this review, you need to just go check out this place now. We were promptly seated at our table upon entering. The service was attentive, considerate, and helpful throughout the courses. There was always at least one person nearby to make sure everyone had what they needed. The food, wow. A selection of curated dishes that you’ll be hard press to find anywhere else. I eat a lot of Japanese food and this menu is unique. And it’s unique for the right reasons not to just be different. Every single dish was excellent. I think we tried about 1/3 of the items on the menu and I’m excited to return and try the rest. That is to say, you probably can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. It’s rare to find good restaurants that deliver on all fronts. I can’t wait to go back.

Had a wonderful experience here. Starting with the cocktails there is an amazing liquor program here and the bartenders are experts. The appetizers we’re all very enticing and I had trouble deciding. I ended up ordering the roast beef, the pork buns and the fried chicken. These were all good shareable portions and tasted phenomenal. I decided to try the Tonton hotpot which was my first ever hot pot experience. The broth entire dish was amazing but the broth really sung. I am looking forward to visiting again in the future.

They're back and better than ever! Great new location. The food is amazing and the consistency of how delicious everything still stands the test of time. A lot of other restaurants try to imitate but Chef Koji Hagihara holds it down and there is no competition. I loved that all the classics are still on the menu. I also got to try some of the new tasty innovative dishes. Full stocked bar with all the best libations for you to enjoy with your delicious food. So don't hesitate and make your reservation now or be left wishing you did 'cause they're filling up fast and for obvious reasons. Five Stars in my opinion. Thank you Hakata TonTon for your detail to attention and efforts to reopen. The service is welcoming, attentive, and definitely on point.

I'm so happy to see this restaurant back. It used to run in West Village, and closed down during Covid. Now it came back with more items on the menu. But the Tonton hot pot is a must! It contains so many gradients in it, the soup is so tasty, plus it is very good for your skin. The tomato salad is my new favorite. Would love to go back and try the weekend brunch menu.

Dessert is worth trying. Tofu with almond flavor create great balance. Liver sashimi is for brave people lol.

made a resy for a friday lunch! was hoping we would be able to try their actual menu items but unfortunately they were only serving their combo menu with the collab they were doing. the set combo was pretty decent only for $30 - ramen, chicken, mapo tofu w rice. but you can’t make any adjustments to it, which was unfortunate for me since i can’t handle spice as well! however, the experience was great nevertheless :).

We couldn’t get a reservation at Hakata TonTon but was still seated rather quickly on a Thurs night as a walk in. The beef rolls and kaarage were my favorite dishes. Loved the aioli that came with the fried chicken and the sauce in the beef roll paired perfectly as well.

Everything tasted great. The hot pot had a lot of vegetables and could have used more meat in it. You have an option to add noodles afterward, but I wish I could do it from the beginning. The drinks were great as well. They have a lot of interesting items on their menu. The person who seemed to be the manager/owner was very attentive to all the customers.

The small plate appetizers in this restaurant are very good. The citrus salmon and uni scallops are my favorite. The hot pot is average.

Very good Japanese restaurant!! Take in account that is different then sushi place here you can eat different kind of dishes more Japanese style 90% Japanese client in restaurant . I had a very good dinner, high quality and fresh food , nice service the young guy at the bar was super kind and friendly. This is a 5 stars place but I gave 4 stars because they have some dishes with mayonnaise and is too much and the fride shrimp where too sweet with too much mayonnaise....(probably was also my mistake that ive took those things) . another thing please put something to land the feet when you are seat at the bar otherwise is really uncomfortable is very easy just add a tube where you can put your feet on it ..

Sat at the bar by myself and food was very nice but the fried chicken neds improvement since it is not crispy enough but very moist, the raw liver is very different and taste really exciting and exceptional. The potato with heavy garlic paste should be a must try.

C

We came here to try the famous yum cha set but left slightly disappointed. The set was beautifully presented, but the taste was lacking. A few pieces tasted blend, and some just felt like fillers. The sesame ice cream was too sweet (although I finished it anyway), and the cocktails were decent. I will need to come back here again to try the hotpot.

Nothing like a huge pot of boiling soup in front of you to keep you warm during winter! Hakata TonTon has lots of fun share-able apps and nabes that uses exciting ingredients like tonsoku and motsu 🤩 We ordered the Tonton hotpot with pork feet and belly, chicken thigh, dumplings, and various veggies. The soup was nice and spicy-ish but bc it was a tonkotsu broth, everything felt a bit too heavy (esp with fatty collagen). The three of us shared the small and it was more than enough! I liked the side dishes more than the main. Uni scallop was good with a nice charred flavor and my fav was the mental fried rice. They mix it in front of you and bc the pan is still hot you get the yummy crispy rice 😋

Came here on the recommendation of a friend. We tried the shake Ramen, ton ton hotpot and pink lady roll. I would say in general the food was fine with no issues but also wasn't spectacular. The service was lovely and attentive, our server portioned out the hotpot for us.

I've been to all three hakata tonton locations. I feel like they recoup their flavor and way of doing things, similar to their original location before covid. Service was great! Can't wait to go again soon.

First time going. Eat with my friend. Love the fried rice and the berry dessert. One star away because of the food size. It is so different from the menu. It is too small

Nice casual dining spot. Foods are small potions and I ordered glass of beer and it's very small. To be honest it's litte was overpriced. Food taste was ok, staffs are nice.

Fried rice and grilled pork feet are awesome! However, the tonton hot pot does not taste the same as before any more... It's way too much white pepper, weird.

Came here for lunch on a weekend. There's no wait and no reservation needed. The nabe here is pretty standard - I personally don't find it special but it's still a good nabe. The appetizers were ok - also not bad but nothing special. The dessert platter tho - was unexpectedly good. It was pretty worth it for the price and everything tasted pretty good. Same price at any cafe in ktown would cost you double and might not even taste as good.

Our party of four came in on a Friday with a 7:30 resso. I had been to their West Village location years back (which I think is also closed now) but only had the hot pot. This time, we ordered other things to try in addition to the hot pot. We kind of made up our own little tasting menu and shared all the plates. We had: Liver sashimi (Veal liver sashimi with sesame oil, salt, and Pajang sauce) - I wasn't sure what to expect because I like liver but have never had liver sashimi before. It definitely tastes very different. The texture is also chewy but slightly crunchy. This wasn't for me Citrus salmon (Atlantic salmon with salmon roe, red onion, jalapeno and lemon dressing) - can't go wrong with salmon sashimi. It sounds like there's a lot going on but all the flavors worked well with each other Chicken karaage (Japanese fried chicken with mala mayo) - another classic. When in doubt, just go with the fried chicken Katsu sandwich (Japanese pork fillet cutlet sandwich with Japanese mustard butter) - I can't remember if I liked this or not. Nothing really stood out to me Yakiniku wrap (Barbecue washu beef with scallion pancake, lettuce, pickled vegetables, and mayo) - kind of basic and not worth the $16 Gyu tongue (beef tongue with ginger scallion sauce) - very tender. I really liked the ginger scallion sauce Yuzu miso pork (Pork belly with Sichuan pepper and yuzu miso sauce) - I remember this being a bit dry Kani harumaki (Blend of snow crab, pork, mushroom and vegetables. Served with spring roll skin) - also pretty basic. Ebi mayo (shrimp with roasted almond, fresh cherry, and yuzu mayo) - I liked the yuzu mayo Hakata roll (Amberjack roll with scallions wrapped in amberjack, shiso, and spicy cod roe) - too much shiso but other than that, the roll was good Uni scallop (seared scallop with sea urchin) - what's not to love about uni or scallop? This was the crowd favorite of the night Small Motsu hot pot "white" (Chicken bonito broth with beef intestine, cabbage, chives, and dumpling skin) - this was very flavorful and the broth tasted really clean. The veggies were a nice addition after indulging in such rich dishes earlier in the evening. But by the time the hot pot came, we were already pretty full. Even though we ordered so many things, there are still a bunch of other dishes I'd like to try, so I'll definitely be back!

This is a very popular Japanese place. Famous for their pork feet. A lot of different varieties dishes on sashimi. As you can see it’s small plates and each plate comes with 3-4 pieces in it. They also have hot pot. Hot pot comes with couple different types of veggies with dumplings, chicken and pork feet inside. You can also add noodle or udon to the pot. Overall food is good but price is on the high side . I will come back and try again.

L
Lisa K.

Overall, food was tasty, just a tad bit too salty. A few from our group had been coming to Hakata Tonton over the years and they were surprised at the portion size of motsu nabe - Large size seemed pretty small and they said it looks like they decreased the portions. I recommend motsu nabe, fried rice, and citrus salmon.

J
Ji Lin Zhu

Great spot for a date or small group to share a hotpot and have some fun small bites. Their yakiniku wrap was amazing and the congee after finishing the hotpot is such a nice touch. Their hotpot could be more flavorful though. Service is amazing too! For a party of 2, I'd recommend ordering the small size hotpot and getting some appetizers to share.

Hakata TonTon, another Hand Hospitality restaurant, serves distinct Japanese soul food from Hakata in Japan! They were many familiar dishes such as hamachi sashimi, karaage, beef tongue, and hot pot. But my favourites were the unique veal liver sashimi and the grilled pork feet with spicy cod roe in bonito broth. If you're a sweet tooth and dining with multiple people, definitely get the TonTon dessert platter, which comes with all 5 desserts they offer!

The service felt disorganized and lacking, but was friendly and courteous. We interacted with a different waiter almost everytime we needed assistance. We were given an incorrect order and it was then taken away and given to the table next to us, not sure how comfortable they were to eat it. Nonetheless, the food was delicious. Highly recommend the hotpot, ebi may, and mentai fried rice. Do NOT pass on the almond tofu pudding made by the chef’s wife.

We enjoyed our cocktails and food at this casual Japanese in Koreatown. The service was very friendly. Everything we had was delicious. Perhaps a little pricey for the portion size, but I would give it another try.

TonTon is a lovely little place that just reverberates good vibes. It has a lovely atmosphere and the host was also really friendly. We were a party of five so we order many things. Nothing here was bad, however there were dishes that I wouldn’t recommend. The hot pot was expensive for the amount given and the taste was underwhelming. The Kani Harumaki was bland and while the presentation was pretty it was a mess to eat. The salt and pepper wings were nothing out of the ordinary and same goes for the fried rice. Now if you do decide to go. The Ebi Mayo was by far the best. The yuzu dishes here were all lovely, the Japanese citrus gives a nice tangy and sweet twist. Ebi Mayo was just that and the almond combined with the shrimp was the highlight of the time there. The yuzu pork belly was also great, although it’s garlic counter part was alright, not great not bad, a little bit salty. For drinks I had a raspberry strawberry mock tail that was not too sweet and had a nice tartness to it. Definitely a palate dependent drink. This was also the first time I tried uni, or sea urchin. The scallops they were on was a bit underwhelming but the overall wasn’t bad. It’s worth a try for those who want to. We ordered the dessert platter and I would say the Nama Pudding and Kocha Cheese Cake stood out the most. The pudding was the most creamy and smooth custard I’ve ever had. The kocha cheese cake was unique and a lovely to eat. The ice creams were nothing special. The green tea tofu was really light, with a barely there tint of sweetness. The place is a great visit to try new things out. A good place to go with friends or take a date.

Went by myself so didn’t try out their signature hotpot. The salad, uni scallop, beef tongue and beef roll are all decent. The portion is not too big so also pretty suitable for solo-dining.

We stumbled upon this fantastic Japanese-owned restaurant in the heart of Chinatown and were thrilled to discover it. We decided to dine there for a late dinner on Monday at 8 PM, and the restaurant was packed with people, every table occupied. We started with some delicious appetizers, drinks, and hot pot. The service was impeccable, and we couldn’t resist trying the desserts. We left with happy tummies and full bellies. We spent approximately $70-80 per person, but it was absolutely worth it. We can’t wait to return soon!

Fresh beef liver lover rejoice !! The liver sashimi is so fresh it doesnt taste gamey. I like to go with the yuzu kosho (yuzu pepper) instead of the other 2 sauces being served. Other notable dishes to try is the hotpot and everything on the menu ( LOL ). Nothing really disappoint. This is our second time back and we are returning for xmas dinner !!

Nice & cozy venue offering modern Japanese flair 👍. The offerings were unique and a delight to the eyes. Tasted just as good as it looks. Very efficient & polite service. The wait staff checked on our table often. I enjoyed the Sashima, need to order bigger portion in the future. Very near excellence 😊

The flavors are just as great as the exquisite presentation! You get to try so many cute little dishes in this brunch set and I liked every single dish! The pork belly bun is my personal fav among all. The dessert matcha tofu is phenomenonal, very tender and delicate and not overly sweet. The appetizer grilled pork feet is so tender and flavorful and it fell apart in your mouth! The only discordance was that the lady who served us was impatient and gave us a weird hostile attitude when we asked about the menu. But I'll definitely come back for the food.

Great food, and drinks. Loved every single dish. I ordered two side of pork belly, as it was so good. The Shishito peppers and Brussel sprout were well seasoned. Really nice Foie grass. The pork feet was delicious and the hot pot was excellent, a little on the spicy side but really good. Added Ramen noodles ad the end just to enjoy the broth and the left over. The green tea ice-cream with chocolate was really good. and the Sake of course was an excellent choice for the meal.

It was nice to eat some authentic Japanese hot pot when the temperature drops. I felt like it was a little lightly seasoned than what I expected but the intestines were fresh! Spacious restaurant, very crowded even on a weekday night. Didn't get any free dessert even thought we told them it was for a birthday. Overall, okay place when you have a craving!

stumbled in on a weeknight. place was pretty empty and we were seated quickly. water came out as fast as we were seated, but the service slowed down after that. there were about 3-4 other tables doning simultaneously and half of them seemed to be almost done with their food so not sure why service was as slow as it was. anyway when the waiter finally came to take our order, we got the kani harumaki, uni scallops, and the tonton hot pot with the white and red broth. everything came out efficiently. the kani harumaki was the favorite dish. it tasted like a springroll. the wrapper was like a deep fried wonton texture and flavor. the uni scallops had a good presentation but it was only ok. it was too fishy for me. i would personally not order again. so i never had this kind of hotpot and i was unsure of the steps. it came out in a heaping pot. it arrived and the server walked away without saying a word. maybe they thought we knew what we were doing. we did not. there were obviously raw meats in it and typically at hot pot i would cook it myself, but it was a lot. i had to ask chatgpt what the protocol was. the answer is to wait for someone to come over. the pot has to boil. leave it alone. anyway the broth had good flavor. not spicy, not too salty. there was a good amount of veggies, 2 dumplings, 3 tofu, 4 pork feet/knuckles, 2 pieces of chicken and an adequate amount of pork belly. it was mostly good, however i will say pig feet is not for everyone. my son was not a fan, but we did take the remainder of the dish to go as it would probably taste great with hot pot sliced beef at home and other veggies. we finished with a yuzu sorbet. enough to share. it was an experience. the waiter never came back around. we sat there for 15 min after we finished dessert. it felt like some places in europe where you have to either wave down a waiter or pay at the counter. i couldnt wait any longer as we were there for nearly 2 hours. i guess i will say that they definitely do not rush you, but i need to go home and sleep so i can work in the morning. anyway, thats my 2 cents. perhaps it was an off night. there were plenty of other items i wanted to try on the menu but i didnt have the stomach space for it. next time. and i think for what it was, price was pretty reasonable. i will come back to try other dishes.

The fried rice was good and the beef wraps were also delicious. However the hotpot, beef tongue, and yellowtail dishes were not that great. I was a bit disappointed. Honestly the service was good but other than that there was nothing too special or mind blowing about this place. Just an average restaurant.

The Tonton Hot Pot Pork Collagen had only a few small pieces of pork feet, mostly cabbage and chives. The food and drinks were underwhelming, and overall, I wasn’t impressed.

Went there Sunday evening. Being told that wait-list is 45 min but got seated after 10 min wait. You can also sit at the bar immediately but you can't order hot pot there. The service is awesome and our waiter is very enthusiastic. He also went over the whole menu with us. Ordered the beef intestine hot pot but it's very very greasy. Shake cold noodles is more of a show and tastes plain. Not impressed with other appetizers either. Cocktail menu is interesting and may have some worth trying as they're not too strong

S
Sara Fong

I really wanted to like it but sadly it was not a good experience on both food and service. First two dishes were solid but the last two were a miss and honestly unappetizing. The stew with intestines was crazy oily and the intestines were so chewy and fatty that I basically could not chew through them and had to spit most out. I am very familiar with eating intestines and order it a lot but this was not good. Also, the waitress gave us the wrong broth and we informed her - while she was polite she did get very defensive and only apologized after she realized it was her mistake, and didn’t offer to get us a new one or give us any discounts or complimentary items. All she said was “is it too spicy for you?” in a borderline condescending way because we ordered the plain one and she gave us spicy. It was in fact not too spicy, just not what we wanted, but we felt bad wasting the food so we kept it. The pork feet dish was also strange and just not flavourful. Sad because I liked the vibes :( Will not be back.

M
Maggie Chan

im so disappointed 🥲 i had really high expectations and i didn’t leave just unsatisfied, but also feeling scammed with the hot pot. it was nearly $70 for extremely salty/oily soup full of chives/cabbage. no meat, eggs, etc. the intestines were IMPOSSIBLE to chew. also ordered the “pork belly” which i swear was not in the soup but the waitress said it was. 99% sure it wasn’t the concept of ordering the noodles/additional toppings AFTER the soup also made no sense to me. i’m just going to eat plain udon or an egg after a soup?? and not during it…? lastly the smaller things that were an inconvenience: 1) how tiny the soup bowls were. i’m not sure why anyone thinks it’s a good idea to give a tiny bowl that requires like 5 refills cus nothing can fit in it lol. 2) spoons weren’t even given ._. and 3) the place didn’t really have any decor/character. it sorta resembled a swimming pool vibe 😅

The new Hakata TonTon is different. It is not the old Hakata TonTon, and the taste changed. I preferred the old food better and the cozy vibe of a Japanese restaurant, not another Izakaya Mew or Nonono. The Motsu Nabe that I ordered, which I solely missed, taste was not the same. The soup used to be really clear with a hint of spice, really warms you up in a cold winter's day. This soup the motsu/meat were all small shredded pieces mostly collagen/fat. There used to be slices of meat that is completed replaced with these shredded pieces instead. The cabbage tasted a big grainy, not fresh or crispy. The chili shrimp omelet was okay, quite sweet, and didn't expect the shrimp to be battered/covered. I heard the executive chef was the same so I had high hope, but this feels like just another establishment of the same restaurant group. Wish there is a better Motsu Nabe place in the city. (The one in east village was not bad)

Yesterday afternoon, lunch, the wait at Chodanggol, a very famous Korean restaurant, was too long 50 min ( oh my !! ) so I went here.next door restaurant. Review is not bad . I had a delicious family lunch, but the portion was too small. My husband and I, my mother, my younger sister and my little daughters, 3 and 6 years old. But why is the tip automatic? Did it look like I wasn't going to tip? Living in Manhattan, this is the first time I've ever been charged a tip auto. I almost tipped twice. -.,

K

We ordered a few appetizers and their signature tonton nabe. Let me just say the nabe had little to no flavors (only tasted the spice) with small portion of meat. Would recommend trying out Kimura in St Marks for authentic nabe. Appetizers wise, we ordered the gyu tongue which was way overpriced for $26 and only came in 4-5 pieces. The citrus salmon sashimi had no citrus flavors and the cod roe omelet actually came out cold which was odd. Overall, our experience was pretty underwhelming. Service was okay and ambiance was nice. I appreciate the quality of ingredients but the execution just wasn’t there.

My husband made it very clear he has an allergy to Sesame seeds and despite telling multiple servers of this they continued to give him food topped with sesame seeds. After bringing his dish out TWICE the chef continued to top his food with his allergen and claims it needed. The servers should have never said it could have been accommodated and they appeared to poke fun at his discomfort. The attitude from the servers and chef is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
