Love Phil Hughes! Great casual bar to hang out at on a Friday evening or for a game. The service is always excellent, beer selection is pretty decent, and the outdoor seating area (during COVID) is immaculate. Highly recommend for a Guinness!
Great bar, great drinks! Very fun they have a pool table and darts
Had the most incredible experience with James and his team. We wanted to have a going away party and after reaching out to numerous places with hefty minimums we decided to stop by and ask James if we could host it at Phil Hughes. He was super accommodating and reserved a whole area for us. He was attentive all night and made sure everyone was taken care of. We love this bar and highly recommend them for either hosting an event as well as just enjoying a good Guinness while watching a sports game. Lovely atmosphere and vibe too!
Love our neighborhood pub! Always welcomed with great smiles and excellent service! They show any sports channels you request. You can order food from any of the local places but they sell real good Irish potato chips as well! Our favorite bartenders (in no particular order): Adi, Brian, James, Kelsey, Ken. And a special mention to Manny!
No food but Roma across the street is a great option for the beers and football at Phil Hughes. Love coming here in the fall, tons of outdoor seating, all the TVs outside have the games, and great beers on tap! Wonderful UES staple
Went here with a friend to watch the first NFL game of the season and it was a great atmosphere! There were a couple of Detroit fans at the bar so their energy definitely kept spirits high! The bartenders are nice and attentive. Looking forward to watching more games here this season.
This place dosent serve food but there's a pizza shop across the street and you can bring it in to eat. Bartender was fast with drinks. It is also cash only but they have an ATM inside, fee is 2$ so not too bad. Wednesday is trivia night and it gets full but its fun.
This is a perfect, local, neighborhood, Irish pub with lots of TVs and a pool table that is Cash Only. And if that's what you are looking for, you won't be disappointed. The beer selection is great - all your typical beers, Guinness (obviously) but also a local craft IPA or two (they always seem to have Sloop Juice Bomb at an amazing price for the neighborhood). But for me, the real draw is their amazing outdoor space. My wife and I love walking our dog at Carl Schurz park then stopping at Phil Hughes for a beer on the outdoor patio. One of the joys of living here. And now that we have a young daughter, we love taking her here in the warm weather and sitting outside. It's a slice of UES heaven and for all the neighbors/locals that live here, you won't be dissapointed. No food, but you can bring your own. So, go to Roma pizza across the street, get a slice or two and come over to Phil Hughes for a few pints
Have been here for consecutive weekends; their outdoor space is complete with adequate seating and lighting as well as TVs to bring back a little bit of normalcy to relax and watch some sports. When you come, look for Melanie! She was our waitress both times and has been an angel. Drinks are nice and strong. Cash only! Great lil neighborhood bar with some yummy seasonal bar drinks
Busy but exciting game night
This is a place of pilgrimage for me and some of my family. Phil opened it in '57 and prior to that it was a German bar called the "Bismark" - that moniker stuck long after Phil took over. My grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles were regulars there until the mid 60's. I try to make a stop every time I'm in town. It was and is a working class shot & a beer joint. Glad to see it surviving.
I used to love coming to Phil Hughes. Unfortunately they no longer allow dogs. I was kicked out with my dog while minding our own business. I would usually be more understanding, but it was an empty bar and they do not serve food. My dog and I had been coming here for years before this happened. Bring Mattie back): Also mind, they are cash only. I won’t be back.
Great booze spot. Outdoor seating. TV. Pool table. Worth noting it is cash only, but they have an ATM. It’s a real bar and it’s a great fit for the area. I’ve also seen people bring their own food and they’re okay with it, so I think that’s super fun. Overall will be back to drink some beers
Cash only but if u go on a weeknight you can play billiard and darts :) decently priced drinks
Definitely UES. Filled with the people that live around here and their newly adult offspring. They have lots of tvs inside and outside, so that’s something. No credit cards (atm inside), no food (but you can bring some). Tragically boring imo but that has nothing to do with the business. What they do, they do well.
I wasn't crazy about CASH ONLY and essentially no food but the beers were nice and fresh. The sloop juice IPA was especially good. They let you have food delivered so we ordered some margheritas from a nearby pizza spot. Good times!
Customer service was terrible, bartender was barely behind counter and kept disappearing outside. Despite giving the bartender generous tips, Bar tender rudely shushed us during a game of pool for cheering. The bartender began to remove our personal belongings without asking just to make room for his regulars who were probably disturbed by the “noise”. Totally unprofessional, The cocktails were poorly mixed, the beer is flat and wheres the music??? The bar seems like a place you come to wallow in depression. If you need a good place to come read your divorce papers go there! Cheers.
