The steak!! Chef's kiss. Really fresh tortillas, chips & pico de gallo. Service was also good. Have been back and will be going again for sure. The Tijuana steak tacos are amazing! Just one issue is that the second time around the servers kept coming multiple times to check if we were done and it felt a bit like we were being rushed even though there were other customers around, and also enough free spots that we weren't holding anybody up...
Wow! This food is a whole amazing experience! Really delicious! I bought to share with my wife...but I may just eat it all and hide the evidence. It's that good! You can tell they take their time to make the best food! Steak tacos and the tacos birria. They have a very nice selection of Mexican Sodas and classic coca cola. I will be ordering from again soon!
Ive had mexican food at a million different places and this is in the top 10 for freshness of the ingredients, flavor, texture (crispy), and overall taste. Absolutely delicious food and I will be back again soon. The servers are also friendly and attentive. The establishment itself was spotless inside. Glad to have this place as an addition to the neighborhood.
First and foremost, the food is extremely delicious. These are some of the best tacos I’ve ever had in nyc. I left feeling very satisfied with my meal. The only drawback that I will mention but won’t penalize for is that it’s very pricey. I assume their prices are a function of the rent so it makes sense but be prepared to spend some cash for these amazing tacos.
Amazing food!! The steak burrito was excellent. It was grilled on the outside and served with guacamole and pico. The chips, pico and variety of salsas were great. The owner is such a friendly guy. We can’t wait for frozen margaritas when they get their liquor license. This is our new favorite spot for Mexican food.
We loved every single dish that we ordered. We had grilled chicken and birria tacos and they were both delicious! The whole meal was reasonably priced and the service was great. Highly recommend if you are in the Upper West Side
Not only is the food incredibly fresh & delicious when dining in person…it’s equally as amazing for takeout which I feel is impossible to do. The tortillas are made in house and still crispy despite the travel time. We also had the best experience when eating in the other week and had a great convo with Leo, the owner. Such a kind guy! We’re officially neighborhood regulars.
This place was amazing 👌🏻 if you are around and craving Mexican food , this is the place to GO. Coming from Los Angeles this place felt like home. The food and drinks were delicious. I had the Tinga tacos and a few Palomas 🍹 The service was great . Leonel the owner was so nice and friendly . Thank you for making me feel like home! Definitely coming back.
The food is excellent! Sonora tacos and steak burrito in particular. I do wish they had their own delivery people as I refuse to use the delivery apps, corporate thieves. So I'll only pick up or dine in, which limits how often I patronize this delicious establishment. What a shame.
Amazing food and service! Had the fish and al pastor tacos and they were great! Guacamole was really good too. They make all their tortilla in house and the ingredients are super fresh. Highly recommend! Will definitely be coming back
There are not many great Mexican options in the city and this is definitely one of them. I can see myself becoming a regular. Loved the chicken burrito bowl. The burrito shell was crispy. The filling paired really well with their spicy orange sauce (it's really spicy though so be gentle). Can't wait to try the tacos.
Best Mexican on the upper West side. These guys make their own corn tortillas, it tastes like you’re in Mexico City. Tacos great, burritos great drinks excellent. All very very good, by far the best Mexican in the area. Way superior to the Columbus Ave., Mexican establishments
Drinks were delicious. Food was delicious. Sauces and service was amazing. 10 out of 10 would come multiple times again.
The food was fantastic! I tried the al pastor tacos and the pernil(pork shoulder) tacos. Order comes with 2 tacos. Decided to have a side of rice and beans to help fill me up. I'm not even joking, this rice tasted like home made Mexican rice and beans. I was kind of shocked because I didn't expect it to taste that good! The jamaica(iced Hibiscus tea) was not too sweet and not too bitter; it was a great in-between and I definitely recommend it. From what I have read, the only complaint most people have with the restaurant is prices. However, I don't think most people consider the location, and maybe, more importantly, how delicious the food is! Service was great and the server was super friendly. I'm glad I ate here, and I can't wait to come back!
LOVE this place. Maybe the best chips and salsa I have had in recent memory. It’s incredibly fresh. Amazing tacos as well. Addicted. Had the burrito once, and that was superb as well. Shout out to Brenda and team, they always greet me like family…and that really means a lot. Wish the tacos were slightly less expensive, but I get it. Times are tough. I hope they are successful because they do a great job and deserve it. Thank you Taqueria 86…I’m so lucky I live so close!
Incredible birria and al pastor tacos, best in the neighborhood by 100 miles
Walked in and placed a takeout order off the street. Food was ready fast and was absolutely delicious!
This place is amazing!!! Took my parents from Brazil to try Mexican food for the first time and they absolutely loved it. Food is subtle while also having an authentic flavor.
As a Tijuana native, the birria tacos were solid and the horchata was amazing! Will definitely be back to try other tacos and will update those results :)
Best street taco’s ive had in nyc. In an old NYC diner (or at least that’s the vibe), otherwise amazing taco’s and REAL margarita’s that’re fantastic. This is the type of caliber you expect to eat at in NYC.
My daughter and I ate here last night, and it was divine! We had the chips and guacamole, and both were really fresh. But then we ordered the Guadalajara Birria (brisket tacos), and they were the best I've ever had. The brisket was really tender and flavored to perfection. The owner, Leonel, came by our table, and he was really friendly. He's a REALLY nice guy. And when we left, we saw he brought the guy grooming the tree in front of the restaurant a margarita, which was so classy. This will DEFINITELY be our go-to spot for tacos, chips, and guac. 🌮🥑🍸
This is my neighborhood, and I've wanted to come check this place out since they opened - a year and a half ago, we asked - so we did tonight, since they set some tables outside and it was such a warm evening I wasn't expecting more than a little neighborhood restaurant, though I am a big fan of that, but oh my, this was a surprise. We shared the skirt steak, pulled pork, and grilled chicken tacos and all were delicious. These would rank pretty high on the list of great Mexican foods I've had. The chicken and the beef tacos were savory, and the pork extra juicy. Their corn chips are also yummy. We're going to be coming back!
Taqueria 86 is my go to neighborhood taco spot! I love the burritos and Al Pastor tacos. Cannot recommend enough! This post was made in connection with a Toast promotion.
All we want is some amazing tacos and guac, this place just never disappoints. I will alter my way home to go get these tacos ok? They are that good.
Love this spot. It’s a super chill vibe and it’s amazing food. Great prices. Management is superb and friendly. Staff is equally the same. My favorite are the Sonora tacos and the Cholula tacos, but all of the tacos will please you. Drinks and food with friends? YES. Date night? YES Family dinner? YES Just come and try it out.
Tacos were excellent! Tortillas are so fresh and it makes all the difference! The chicken and shrimp tacos are well balanced and flavorful smoky salsa is tops, a lot of the time chicken and shrimp is not fresh in a taco, or bland, this was the opposite! Highly recommend as by far the best tacos in the area- no competition!
I was starting to think NYC lost its touch for tacos but this place restored my faith. I ordered a dinner delivery for 2 ( Al pastor tacos, Birria tacos, Chicken Quesadilla & Churros. ) Everything was packaged great to ensure a smooth delivery. Everything was well seasoned, authentic tasting and overall satisfying. My only complaint was the size of the consome and the size of the dipping sauce for the churros.
$4 Taco Tuesdays!!! Guac tastes better than my own recipe. Passion fruit margaritas are delicious. Service is excellent. Bonus points for gluten free options. Definitely coming back.
Some of the best tacos I’ve had in the US, comparable quality to Mexico City. Great drinks, great service. We ordered 8 tacos and 4 drinks, spent $150 with tip. Steep but worth it, will come back again!
Delicious Mexican food - I was so excited to see this place open & grow into success. The bar has a great selection of tequilas to match the very good food. They could use a spruce up with the atmosphere - maybe candles or updated bathrooms? It's a great local spot.
Not the fanciest place, but you gotta stop by for taco Tuesday. Birria tacos = phenomenal. Guacamole and chips = best I’ve had in a while. The waiter Ivan told me this is a family joint, adds to the allure. Margaritas were strong, but not toooo strong.
Delicious food and great service! I went with my fiancé on a Saturday afternoon. I was scared that the place was going to be crowded, but was all the opposite. Very nice and calm place to sit down and have a pleasant time where you can hear the person sitting in front of you. I do not like places with loud music that makes it hard to even hear yourself, but Taqueria 86 was awesome. I recommend getting the Torta Cubana. It was absolutely delicious, and the birria tacos. The tacos were juicy and flavorful! The service was great as well, very welcoming and attentive people. Overall, 10/10!
What a great meal here! Somehow only managed to get a pic of the last elote (4 to an order!), but also ordered the cantarito drink, a michelada, a tamarind mezcalita, steak tacos, and cheese enmoladas. Elotes were incredible. they have the most delicious chipotle mayo on them. Cantarito was a decent drink, kind of tasted mostly like a margarita, but was so beautiful! I wish I remembered to take a pic. Michelada was hands down the best I've ever had. so much flavor while still being so refreshing. I would honestly come back just for that. Tamarind mezcalita was delicious, nothing out of the ordinary just very good. Exactly what I hoped for when I ordered it Steak tacos were great, steak was perfectly cooked, super tender, super fresh, and had a generous portion in each taco. Enmoladas were fantastic - super chocolatey sauce with just the right amount of spice. We can't wait to come back and explore the rest of the menu!
Food and service: ideal for a quick bite to eat or shelter during a cold rainy day. Its high rating on google attracted my friends and me. I tried the tampica, cholula, and puebla tacos on this occasion. They were all of reasonably acceptable quality and at an excellent price since they were part of the Tuesday taco deal they have on Tuesdays. Environment: it is a curious place. It is a tribute to the World Cup in Mexico 86; that is why you can see photos of that event decorating the place. The site is quite large and was practically empty at lunchtime. Staff: The waitress was quite correct, although she made some mistakes on the bill. The manager was quite friendly and nice. He even invited us to a tequila shot. Return probability: 95%. Especially if it´s taco Tuesday!
I have never left a review before, but thought this place was 100% worthy of one. Best Mexican food I’ve had in the city. I was confused when I saw such good reviews but I fully understand now. This place is one hundred percent a must try. I’m only putting a picture of the dessert I had but the torta and quesadilla were insanely tasty as well.
Delicious food, fun atmosphere, and super friendly staff. We loved the tacos and the margaritas!
This is the best deal on Taco Tuesday’s. The tacos are filling and all delicious. Every time I come here the service is great. The staff are all very nice and I like that they wear soccer jerseys for their uniform. The BEST horchata I’ve EVER had in the city. It’s made in house and extremely delicious.
I went yesterday and they had Taco Tuesdays where u have the first 6 types of tacos on the menu were on sale and i had a passion fruit margarita and strawberry margarita and a passion fruit sangria aww man everything tasted amazing and it was made quick too. It wasnt so crowded in there and our bartender Julie was so sweet and had the best service. I've been here twice before for takeout food but the dine in experience definitely was good and i will be back soon!
Fantastic food and experience, great addition to the upper west side. The owner personally came to my table to explain his recipes and the concept as a whole. There was clearly a lot of thought put into the menu, and it shows. I highly recommend eating here and supporting this small business!
I love this place. My 2 year old loves this place. Great tacos, great margaritas, chill, friendly.
This is my favorite taco spot. Best Birria in NYC. I have eaten 1000 they are consistent and delicious. The staff is super sweet.
Wonderful family owned restaurant with homemade everything including 3 kinds of hot sauce and Oaxaca cheese that melts on the best nachos I've ever eaten. Same with awesome margaritas and a not to be beat tequila menu. The tacos and burritos are amazing. Try the shredded chicken tacos and the brisket one that have lots of yummy gravy. The service by Ivan, a cousin of the owner was great with helpful tips on what tequila to choose and what the best tacos are on the menu. The vibe is great and the food out of this world. A really great find.
I'm in NYC since sunday and so far, this is the best restaurant I've eaten to. There's isn't a lot of latin food restaurant here in France so I was excited to eat at one here and I'm glad I've probably picked one of the best totally randomly. The waiter was super nice with us. I highly recommand it!
Amazing place. I came randomly because was raining but it was the best place ever. The food was really good, good portions, the elote is a 10/10 And the Jamaica water was the best one that I tried in a long time The ambience is nice, is small and really cozy. Very comfortable And the service was good too
My first time trying this place and the food was really good. I tried their Guadalajara Birria which is slow cooked brisket, Oaxaca cheese, cilantro, sliced radishes, onions, lime slice and consomme sauce on Nixtamal tortillas. The tamarind jarritos soda matched well with the tacos too
Small neighborhood favorite, delicious tacos and a few sides. Funky fun decor pays homage to the 1986 World Cup soccer championship. Very authentic taste, not Tex Mex which so much NYC Mexican can be. Service is quick, even after a group of 30 jiggers ran in after their race! Try the al pastor and chicken rings tacos. Delicious elote on the cob too. Loved our key lime cheesecake dessert.
Walked in for lunch and were seated in a comfortable spot. The only discomfort came from the constant opening of their door on a freezing Sat afternoon and non-existent heating at this place. Got the Guacamole & Chips ($16), Puebla ($11.95) for 2, and Mushroom Tacos ($11.85) which were the best on our table. I wish they'd let you mix and match but the condition is to get two of each kind! Noise levels were on the lower end, and service was kick. Food arrived within 15-mins of ordering. Highly recommend this place for their tacos!
Very tasty street food in a nice atmosphere. Our waitress was friendly and took care of us well. While all the food was great, their Mexican rice stood out above the bland rice you get at many Mexican restaurants.
One of the best tacos. Haven’t felt like going back to Los Tacos or any of the other popular ones after eating here. Excellent spicy margaritas. Service is quick and staff is friendly! Definitely one of my fav go to neighborhood joints.
Great tacos, not too expensive. Fast and easy service. I came on a Friday around 12:30 and there was only one other table eating, though someone else came in for a pick up order. I got the pulled chicken tacos and the amount of meat per taco was good. They must get busier in the evening. Either way it’s definitely worth stopping by!
Food is fantastic, atmosphere is fantastic, and the servers are so so kind and attentive and lovely. The best authentic tacos I've had have always been from stalls or food trucks, but this is the first sit-down taco place in the US that had me wanting to come back. It really is the perfect place to go if you want good tacos in Manhattan, and the theme of the 1986 World Cup is so fun and different, it's a really cool vibe on a Friday night. In terms of dishes I recommend the Guadalajara and Al pastor tacos, elotes, and horchata.
Wow I had one of the tastiest tacos at the Taqueria 86!! YUM!! My husband and I were set out for a Peruvian place but we saw this cute clean place w many folks, we decided to come to Taqueria 86. Best decision ever!! We highly recommend this place. We will definitely come again when we are coming to the MET.
My whole experience was a 15/10 I sat outside with my dog and the waiter greeted us and my pup with water right away. The staff was all so attentive and so nice. I had an appetizer, a torta, a cocktail and dessert. Every single item ordered was PHENOMENAL. I will be coming back regularly.
I loved this place, very cozy and the employees are super friendly and attentive if you need anything. Something that for me is a plus is that the owner approached each table to verify that everything is fine and welcome each customer. But let's talk about the food: Authentic tacos with excellent flavor, a variety of tacos to choose from. On this visit we tried almost everything on the tacos menu to mention a few: Birra tacos, Pork Shoulder, Al Pastor, Skirt Steak, Fish, Shrimp, Tinga, Rajas Poblana and we did not try any more for a next visit because I will definitely return. The menu has different dishes to choose, but not only food, they have the cocktail menu (ufff) you won't want to leave this restaurant. We ordered the frozen margaritas that you can order in different flavors and on this visit we tried the passion fruit (recommended). Before leaving we ordered some churros for dessert with vanilla ice cream that was the cherry on top.
i ordered their al pastor tacos (marinated pork, pineapple, onions and cilantro on top) as well as their cholula tacos (shredded chicken marinated in chipotle tomato sauce with onions, cilantro, and mexican cream with fresh cheese on top). the flavors were authentic and the tacos were a delight to eat. i simply couldn’t get enough— each bite was so flavorful. between the two, i liked the al pastor tacos better as i felt they had really nailed the marinade (which pairs so perfectly with the pineapple). i will definitely be back to try their birria tacos!
Since this place just opened earlier this year and is hidden on a street, it was slow when we visited during dinner hours on a Saturday. Although the place might not be the fanciest, the food was amazing. My tacos were creamy and satiating, whereas my friend’s burrito was huge. It’s one of the best Mexican restaurants Ive tried so far.
Delicious food! Loved the al pastor tacos, golden flautas, and quesadillas. Will be coming back to try the rest of the menu. Great service as well and the beer on draft was great. This area was missing a great taco spot and this is it! Edit: went back twice more and going for a third time this week! This time tried the churros and they were fresh out of the oven, delicious!
💯 fan for this restaurant. I love Los Taco No1 but I am in the neighborhood and found this new place popped up. Decide to try for late lunch. This is best decision of the day. Everything is well prepared, home made and fresh. Love their enchiladas. Taco with seasoned pork also great. Service is very friendly and attentive. Price range is unreal for this neighborhood. 12 usd for big plate of enchiladas and filled you up. Just have to come and try this place is amazing 🤩
The drinks, the food, and the vibe of this place are great. Something about it just feels cool, and the margaritas were perfect. Only criticism here: it would be nice to have something to put the sauces on, we got the chips and 3 sauces and there’s no space really to put them in so you can dip instead of pouring them on each chip. On the other hand, prices feel high for the food portions and the service wasn’t the best. No one ever came to refill water, had to ask twice till someone came and did it.
Great food and service. Nice vibe. They do not overfeed you like some places. Just right
Not bad for Mexican food spot on the upper west side... nice cocktails, great chips and guacamole. The star of the meal was the elote. As for the tacos- I felt everything was prepared well, the portions were decent, but the seasoning was a bit subdued for my taste.
Stopped in for the first time last night. My wife and I each had two tacos, which were very good, if on the small side for the price. Our drinks were also very good, a bit weak, and $15-plus. Beers were all at least $9. The atmosphere was very convivial and jovial, people all having a good time, though maybe it was a bit too bright for dinner. The service was great: friendly and attentive. One thing I don’t like was that the server presents the total bill to you electronically and you have to ask to see the itemization. That seems a recipe for a rip-off, which was not the case for us. Also the tips on the payment screen went high to low from left to right, not the typical way, and seemed set up for overpayment. We’ll go again on Taco Tuesday, when “all” tacos are supposed to be $4. Except for those that aren’t, according to a server. We’ll see.
Steak tacos were decent. On the pricer side when it comes to tacos but overall was fine to taste and enjoy for a quick meal or dinner date in the area. Place feels more like dive bar vibes in the evening because of the lower lighting but nice for casual dates and friend meets during day and evening as well. Close to central park as well.
I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Stopped in for a quick lunch. Place was pretty empty around 1230pm with maybe 3 other tables dining in. The food was delicious, drinks very tasty and not too sweet. Had the shrimp tacos and it was flavorful. The guacamole was pretty good. Served with fresh homemade tortilla chips. Just a tad bit salty. The frozen mango margaritas were perfect and not too sweet although slightly pricey. Ended up having a 2nd round! Loved the playlist also. Service was friendly and everything came out fast. I hope more people discover this place as you can easily walk past it and not know it's here or what it is. The outside doesn't invoke curiosity or jump out at you. Maybe post some menus, do some advertising. They have happy hour here also! Fun vibe, good food, good drinks, and really close by. I will definitely be returning when in the mood for Mexican food or just to sit at the bar for a drink.
The food really was great, friendly staff, solid drinks. I was extremely disappointed however in the fact that while this place is called Taqueria 86 after the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, they play very little soccer on their TVs. This place has so much potential for more. Either fully lean in to your soccer theme or fully go another direction. If this place did a better job at being a bit more soccer forward, it would be packed every night.
Got an order to go. The burrito al pastor was very good, but the portion size was really small. It was barely bigger than a soda can, which is a little crazy for a $14 burrito. It didn’t even fill me up. I also had an 8oz side of black beans, which were totally fine, but again the size was small for $6. The staff was friendly while I waited for my order and the space was cool. The bar side seems like it’d be a nice spot to hang out. Overall, this is a nice place with a friendly staff and good food, but it’s just too pricey for the small portion sizes I received.
My wife and I visited last week. While the chips, guacamole, and sauces were delicious, the burritos (one chicken and one carnitas) we ordered weren’t very good. The ingredients inside the burritos were sort of sectioned off (mostly lettuce in one bite, mostly rice in another bite) and just didn’t taste coherent. It felt more like eating a wrap than a burrito. For $18 a burrito, this really wasn’t worth it. The service was pretty standard, but we had to ask for the check twice.
Got quesadillas and birra tacos and it wasn't giving felt like I wasted my money honestly the quesadillas only had chicken inside with some cheese and on top some powder cheese. The birra taste like a lot of oil did not like either. The service was good and the waiters were nice.
It’s nothing compared to other good taco places like los tacos no 1. Quality wise totally not worth the price. Just go to chipotle. Better in taste and price
The side of guac was minuscule and would no way serve the large bag of chips. The shrimp tacos were tiny and had way too much cheese!
Not sure what happened here. When it first opened the food was fresh and service was great. Went back recently for dinner, they had put on loud music and wrestling on TV despite a pretty sedate neighborhood crowd! Think there were only two people at the bar. The chips served with the guacamole were smashed - as if they had been dug out from the bottom of a bag. The waitress couldn't hear us and kept shouting back our order at us! Our drinks never arrived. The tacos were bland and some were smothered with shredded cheese to compensate. Disappointed.
Good was really average and overpriced. Service is nice. Place way overrated.
Went for happy hour for Cinco de Mayo, we were immediately met with disappointment. The menu was limited because it was 5/5, we were able to order some appetizers and what we thought would be our first round of margaritas. As we're eating and drinking our waitress was not attentive at all, we actually waited about 20 minutes before we said anything. One of the staff asked if we were okay, we said we'd like to order more drinks. At this point we're a little frustrated but understanding, the lady that asked if we were okay was seen speaking with our waitress and pointed at our direction. Finally another waitress sees our empty cups and proceeded to ask for our order, we watched our waitress walk back and forth and did not make eye contact or acknowledge us for another 20 minutes. So now we're past frustration and we're visibly upset, so we decided to cancel the drinks and get our check. I forgot to mention our waitress made an attempt to rush us to order food, but never came around to take our order. We talked about maybe giving them another chance but I was too disappointed with the waitress's behavior to even consider it. The food was good, would definitely recommend the corn and the guacamole. The service needs improvement!
