Tip: Get a reservation, especially if going with a group. If deciding between the smash burger and patty melt, the smash burger is highly recommended.

Well if this isn't a perfect late night destination in NYC, I don't know what is! A last minute whim landed me in NYC on Holiday Eve 2024 and I needed a meal. Walking through the cold streets, I stumbled upon The Spaniard which has quickly become one of my favorite NY destinations! We were there for a quick 30 hour trip to experience the "Holiday Magic". After a long day of travel, we just needed something good. We arrived and they accommodated us in a back booth tucked behind the bar, perfect! Our waiter was a delight and very responsive. The martini was kick-ass and our waiter was kind enough to offer us many recommendations. We landed on Charbroiled Oysters, Steak Tartare, and French Onion Dip. Someone slap me, I'm drooling while I write this review over a year later. Seriously, phenomenal. Every bite was amazing! We cleared the table and manged a few cocktails during our time with The Spaniard. If you are ever in the West Village, stop by, you won't be sorry! Thanks me later, actually!
Awesome spot for fun cocktails and a huge whiskey selection.
I recently had the opportunity to film a birthday party at The Spaniard, and this neighborhood gastropub really stands out. The place offers a well-curated menu featuring American classics, burgers, an extensive whiskey and cocktail selection, all while exuding a throwback vibe that's hard to resist. But what really sets this venue apart is the private room in the back. It's an intimate yet dynamic space that comes with its own bar and bartender. The catering staff were on point, keeping the delicious bites coming all night long. The room itself is a design gem, blending retro and modern elements in a way that's both nostalgic and fresh. The Spaniard offers more than just good food and drinks; it offers an experience. Whether you're planning a private event or looking for a unique spot for a casual night out, this gastropub has got you covered.
Leon is fabulous! One of the best managers in the industry. So professional, kind, and helpful. He provided such a great experience for our group. Will definitely be back!
We had such a nice time at The Spaniard! We were treated to spectacular hospitality, meticulously crafted cocktails, lovely wine, and excellent fries. Sat outside for our afternoon snack and couldn’t have been happier with the staff, high quality fare, and ambience. Will definitely be back next time we’re in NYC!
We came here for a quick happy hour because it was on our way to a dinner with friends visiting from out of town. It was a great decision because the food we ordered and the service we experienced made us cancel our dinner and reserve a table here instead. I dont want to over hype it but I really had a great time here and my friends were treated so well. For brunch, we had the oysters, artichoke dip, and calamari. All amazing. Drinks were really good too. But Phil was our server and his energy and the overall experience was the best part. I love when a server cares about the food their recommending. When our friends came, we got our table and ordered some amazing entrees that were simple but really good. My only issue we saw was that the salad had tomatoes in it even though it wasn't listed in the ingredients on the menu. One of the members of our group has a bad allergy to tomatoes so that could have ended bad but we caught it early enough. Phil handled it and took care of us. Such an overall great experience. Can't wait to go back and have Phil be our server.
Found this spot from a book called Drink Like a Local and glad I did. Walked in about 6 and the bar area was packed on a Wednesday. Found an open spot an ordered a Toasted Ham and Cheese and a Revolver. The food was good although I would have went with stone ground mustard instead of Dijon. The drink was burbon, coffee liqueur, and vanilla which came together very nicely. Would definitely go back.
Amazing smash burger. Insane quantity of fresh fries. I popped in here for a late lunch just wanting a refuge from a hot June day. The food was delicious. I sat in the front, but the back seemed to be a tad more intimate if that’s what you’re seeking. I asked the waitress for her advice as I tried to decide between the smash burger and the spicy chicken sandwich. Super happy I went with her suggestion. For a NYC spot, the layout is spacious, ready to accommodate a standing-only crowd drinking from the expansive menu. Good spot. Stop by
Interesting multi-room bar located in west village area. Irish pub feel, pretty casual and no too busy, at least on a Sunday evening. The drinks were not bad, although a little pricey. We didn't try the food. We sat at the bar and talked a bit with our bartender, she was friendly.
Good cocktails and service even while extremely busy. I can't believe I'm going to say this... The popcorn chicken was outstanding!
This was my second time going to a corporate event at The Spaniard: Pros: - The catered food was excellent — we ordered the grilled cheese bites, smash burgers, fries, bruschetta, corn fritters, and onion rings, and everything was a hit. -Great location and atmosphere. -Our server was fantastic — attentive, friendly, and very accommodating. -The events team was quick and responsive over email, which made planning easy. Cons: The general manager came across as quite unfriendly and cold to me. It made parts of the event feel less enjoyable, which was disappointing given how great the rest of the staff and food were.
If you're trying to decide between the smash burger and the patty melt, the burger is at least 100x better. The Brussels were good but they get soggy quick because they're sitting in sauce. Overall the food here is okay for American fare. Kinda fratty vibes in the bar, but if you're at a table it's a completely different atmosphere.
Definitely a great place to have brunch on a Sunday! Got there at 11 right at opening and it wasn’t busy. The crowd comes in around 1. The food was great but more on the pricier side. The service was nice and friendly! The vibe of the place is nice. Very close to the 1 train and the Blue line too. I highly recommend this place for sure
The food was delicious; we had the burger and the steak tartar. The service was good. I had to remove a star for the ambiance as it was crowded and a bit annoying. Also, security was barking out orders like they were cattle calling at a dude ranch to move people around to clear a path near the bar for severs. It could be better if they didn’t overpack it in my opinion. Otherwise the cocktails were delicious as well. Price was fair.
So… as an local expert I can’t tell…we came here for birthday party. They placed us outside, it’s ok, but we reserved inside. Not a problem. We ordered calamari and it wasn’t calamari, it was mix of different seafood and each piece was a size of a small as a hair clip, also we ordered burger and they couldn’t even add the tomato in it, but it still fine, I can deal with it, but tomatoes not so expensive to add it to menu. The most important part was a claims , they were half empty and super small sized. The only great thing about this place is a drinks. Drinks are really good, especially Spaniard 75. Also artichoke dip was amazing. But that’s it. I will not come back to this place. I’m sorry. After I posted review I visited a restroom. That was a shock. I think because this place is so crowded , restrooms is so dirty, omg. It was shock
I’ve been trying to get into this place for a while and never seems to pop up on one of the apps. In all fairness, there were only two of us and three days before New Year’s. However, this place also seems like when it’s on it’s probably on and when it’s off - it’s way off. What do I mean by that? If it were busier, the service would probably have been better and it needs a crowd to give it energy. More about that below. The atmosphere looks like it would be a lot more fun with more people and there were very few people on this snowy Sunday early afternoon. A majority of the seating is in large booths, which should be fun with four or more people. The bar is massive, which would be great if full and with a great crowd. Tons of seating, large U shape, which again would be festive if there were more people. Definitely a great village vibe opportunity. Today was just not that day, all around In terms of the service we etc - there seemed to have been a ton of staff but no one paying a lot of attention. It took a while for us to get someone’s attention to get drinks and silverware, etc. although a tall guy with black nail polish was a stand out for sure. He was engaged. My friend had the Smashburger which looked pretty decent and she said it was OK. I had the brunch burger, which was tiny and for $26 bucks was seriously not worth it. I think the patty on the burger was less than a quarter of an inch. There’s plenty of booze, but nothing special like is described in their pitch online about their brunch. Also, nothing comes with the entrées, e.g. fries, etc. so you have to buy all that separately, which seems like kind of a miss. Even our waitress agreed. I’m sure that this place has its moments but again this was not one of them. I wouldn’t jump at the opportunity to go back and as somebody who lives in the neighborhood that’s kind of a bummer. So net/net, it’s not inexpensive, the service was haphazard, the food was mediocre, and the atmosphere was a bummer for a brunch that they hype big time.
Went here for brunch with a same day reservation for 1 pm on a Saturday. We were about to get a table for two, 45 minutes prior to our reservation time. The street side seating was comfortable, but their covered benches outdoors offers a great seating area for larger groups. Staff overall is very welcoming and friendly and we were seated on our table right away. We ordered 3 cocktails which included a Spicy Margherita, Paloma, and a Passion Fruit Mojito which were all priced at $16. All cocktails were absolutely excellent, especially the Spicy Margherita which had both, a spice and alcohol kick! For food, we got Green Egg Scramble ($15) and a Veggie Smash Burger ($17). While the food was very flavorful, the portion sizes were quite disappointing and the price to value ratio just did not feel good. We also had an incident where a drunk hobo harassed us for a few minutes and the restaurant staff didn't really intervene. Overall though, we had a good time here. Service definitely was good, and food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering.
didnt have the food but bar service was trash. sat down, didnt get greeted for about 5 minutes at an empty bar, had to ask for a menu, bartender didnt come back for another 5 minutes, then had to ask for a happy hour menu (which he didnt hand me during happy hour- in which he had a bad attitude about). to the manager- no wonder ur reviews are mid: fix your bartenders.
I had a genuinely unsafe experience here. I told staff and security that I did not feel safe with the people I was with, and they dismissed it and made comments instead of helping. They even left me outside alone late at night after I asked for support. Situations like this can absolutely play a role in whether someone gets home safely, and no woman who voices a safety concern should ever be ignored. I reached out privately and received no response, so I’m sharing this so others are aware. This was not a safe environment.
I went there on a Friday night for the dancing bar and a guard touched me and pushed me away violently just because I was on his path. I didn’t even understand why we was touching me because I didn’t here him because of the music. I cried and he just said « you go out, you don’t listen ». As a woman I felt very bad . Terrible night for my friends and I. The place is nice but the guards there are very mean.
