This is one of my favorite spots. The food is amazing, the atmosphere is up beat yet relaxing if you sit in the main dining room and the service is always top notch.
I had a wonderful experience at A Restaurant. The food was delicious, fresh, and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, making it a perfect place for both casual meals and special occasions. The staff were friendly and attentive, ensuring everything went smoothly. I would highly recommend A Restaurant to anyone looking for a great dining experience.
Very nice place, 1st time there and really liked it. High end steak house.
Fantastic food! The rack of lamb was maybe the best I've ever had. The creamed spinach certainly was. Everything we ordered was exceptional. The service is top drawer. Very professional and attentive without being over bearing. The place has an old school vibe and charm to it although it's a little dark. I would definitely rate A Restaurant at the top of the other high end restaurants in OC
Thank you Brian for the fun experience! It was our first time to A’s. Thank you for sharing the history and for making our date night one to remember!
An absolutely perfect spot for a romantic dinner! It exudes classic elegance, with a warm and intimate ambiance that sets the mood beautifully. The food was exquisite—every dish was thoughtfully prepared and bursting with flavor. The server, Casey, was impeccable, attentive yet unobtrusive, making the entire evening feel special. Whether it’s a date night, an anniversary, or just a night out, this place is a timeless choice for a memorable dining experience. Highly recommend!
Best ribeye steak I've ever had. Dont get the grass fed one, get the regular boneless ribeye. Order it medium rare and it will melt in your mouth. However the Japanese beef is actually just average and slightly sinuy. But the Japanese mushrooms that come with it are amazing. The Caesar salad is the best I've ever had. The spicy tuna appetizer is amazing. The meatball appetizer is amazing. The hatch sausage appetizer is ok, with a Mexican flavor profile and dumplings which are really crunchy mini biscuits. The gnocchi appetizer is not that great with chunky corn inside, and having an unimpressive flavor profile overall as a dish. The mushroom soup was great but had like a dozen different kinds of mushrooms on it, some of which I didn't care for. The Brussels sprout leaves are average. The green asparagus is great. The mashed potatoes are great.
Came here for an early dinner. Food was exceptional. Bar tender Derrick was great.
Aloha Chef Gomez, will you marry me? I adore you!!! No wonder you have so many fabulous reviews. Well deserved!!! xo Sheri Smith
Always a great experience! Let your server (we always ask for Steven) curate your meal and you'll never be disappointed! Great wines and cocktails! All of the food is fantastic! Try here and you'll always come back... It can be noisy but that's part of it's East Coast steakhouse charm. A bustling bar scene!
My wife and I were in town for a work trip last year in November and got recommended The A for our 1-year anniversary dinner and we’re so glad we went. Not knowing what to expect, we were completely blown away. The food was absolutely delicious, the drinks were top-notch, and the service from Steve was outstanding. He made our night feel special with his attentiveness and great recommendations. We’re seriously considering coming back for our 2-year The A made that much of an impression. Highly recommend for a date night or special occasion!
A Restaurant Crystal Cove was such a great experience. The service was honestly awesome and our server was super friendly and really made the night feel easy and fun. The vibe here is perfect, whether you’re going on a date or just hanging out with friends. The oysters were super fresh (some of the best I’ve had in a while), and the spicy vodka rigatoni hit the spot. Overall, great food, great atmosphere, and amazing service and I’ll definitely be coming back.
From the moment we arrived, the experience was exceptional. The valet service was efficient and welcoming, and the hostesses were attentive and professional, making us feel comfortable right away. Our server was outstanding knowledgeable, friendly, and perfectly timed throughout the meal. The octopus was absolutely wonderful, perfectly cooked and full of flavor, truly a highlight of the evening. The cocktails were amazing , beautifully crafted and perfectly balanced. Overall, a fantastic dining experience with great service, delicious food, and an excellent atmosphere. We will definitely be back!
Order the corn madeleines! Been here three times and can’t go wrong. Classic, dimly lit, natty steak house institution that’s been there 100 years. Beef carpaccio is amazing, have had multiple steaks there and all have been top notch, perfectly cooked. Madeleines are a must.
My favorite restaurant in Newport. Steaks are always on point. Compliments to the chefs and service staff A++. Great bar and on sundays if you're in the industry 50% off
9 hours from home and it is with every minute of the drive to revisit! Traveling through the area took a chance on all the reviews being honest - everyone was spot on. The food is amazing, the services is prompt and polite, and if you are there at the end of the dinner service the chief makes his rounds visiting. All six of us had amazing tasting and beautifully presented seafood.
Amazing restaurant , great food , the atmosphere is so relax . We were sitting outside, there was live music . The home made break was delicious . The steak was really tasty same as the Salmon.
I've been coming here for years and every time is nothing short of excellent! The food, drinks, service are all exceptional. Highly recommend!
The A5 wagyu is insanely good here. I had a great time dining at A Restaurant with my wife. Service was great and the Happy Dad goes very good with the meal.
This place was amazing. Everything was excellent, the service, the food, the atmosphere. I wish I could have tried all the dishes on the menu. They all looked so good. I tried the Chilean sea bass and it was perfect. The Madeleines for dessert were exquisite 😍
A Restaurant is a historic establishment in Newport Beach. The main dining room setting is mostly old fashion red leather half circle booths, comfortable and less noisy than the bar area. I had dinner there on a Sunday night. The staffs were all polite and attentive. I had octopus in many fine dining restaurants. Their Fried Spanish Octopus is the best. It was tender inside yet slightly crispy outside. The Hamachi Crudo had a nice presentation. The ribeye steak, mango cheesecake were all good. My server Steven made the dinner more enjoyable. I will definitely visit them again.
My wife took me here for a great birthday dinner. I’m surprised we haven’t been before because this place is quite good. I think we’ll be coming back more often given the close proximity, delicious food and good service. Cesar was professional and courteous throughout our stay — we didn’t have to ask for anything like napkins, refills, silverware, etc, it was seamlessly present when needed. The food was the highlight: I’d suggest the filet mignon medium rare - the meat melts in your mouth and it is perfectly seared. The sautéed mushrooms were seasoned well, but the Mac and cheese could use some work. Overall, fantastic experience.
You can pay for parking in front of the restaurant for about $1.50 an hour, or you can park up one of the hilly streets for free. I will say I didn’t pay for the meal so I cannot speak about that. But the food here was really good! The interior was very classy. The atmosphere is a bit too loud for me, but will be great for most people. This is not an introverts dream by any means. The mac and cheese here is 👌. We got all the steaks and shared it. It looks like I missed taking a picture of the dressets; there was cheese cake and cornbread Madeline’s which were delicious and the best way to end a savory meal.

A Restaurant is our go to for all special occasions! The food, the drinks, can’t be beat, they even carry our favorite, Fruit Punch Happy Dad! The best part of A’s is the team, our server Stacy is top notch and Brenda and Kirk are on top of everything! Best spot in Newport, 10/10!
I recently visited a local place, and the experience was good. The environment was clean and welcoming, and the staff were polite and helpful. Service was quick, and everything was well organized. Overall, I had a pleasant visit and would recommend it to others.
Party of 5 went the night of the College Football National Championship game. The hostess was nice and accommodated us in the bar so we could watch the game when we requested. Our group had the brussel sprout leaves and the hamachi crudo for starters. Both were terrific and were generous portions I had the winter salad which was large and well-balanced. For the main, most of us had the Block Cut New York. Mine was cooked to a perfect medium rare and was very flavorful. The others in our group indicated theirs was a little overcooked, but they still enjoyed. Overall the experience was exactly as we had expected. High quality service and food at an established well-run restaurant.
Dining here was an all-around excellent experience. The staff’s warm greetings created a welcoming start, and their attentiveness continued throughout the visit. The menu offered many tempting dishes, each prepared with freshness and care. Meals were served without delay, arriving hot and attractively presented. The flavors were balanced and satisfying, showing thoughtful preparation. The restaurant itself was spotless, with a comfortable dining layout and clean facilities. Drinks were handled efficiently, and refills were provided without hesitation. The overall mood was lively yet relaxed, striking a perfect balance. The entire experience left a strong positive impression and a desire to return.

Perfect location for weekend hang out with a touch of romantic, candle light and dim light dinner place. Food is decent, small portion, and fresh ingredients. Should try: 1. Spicy yellowfin tuna. Fresh caught tuna, tasty sauce and crunchy crispy eggplant. It's a must!! 2. Lobster tail creamy soup. 3. Jumbo diver scallops, very yummy! 4. Block cut New York. 5. 45-dry aged beef is a must try as well. But they are out of this item so I must come back and try this. Cocktails are mixed right, variety wine to try, nice servers.
It's an updated old school type classic spot. Think low light, red leather booths in a old school steakhouse vibe. I love to grab one of the booths along the back wall of the main room, enjoy a great meal along with all the people watching available at the bar which gets busier as the night goes on.
What we ordered: Smoking Goose Lomo – $9 Thomasville Tomme – $10 1 Sparkling Water – $8 1 Regular Water – $0 2 Hemingway Daiquiris – $16 ea 2 Crown Royal, Ginger Ale, Lime – $14 ea 1 Grand Marnier – $14 Entrees: Niman Ranch Bone-in Pork Chop – $40 Chicken Pot Pie – $32 Dessert: Banana Split – $14 (shared) Valet Parking Only: $9 We were honestly there because I saw someone on social media get the chicken pot pie and thought, I have to have that. I’m really glad we did. Parking is valet-only and costs $9. The restaurant itself is very dated — it’s old (1926), and it feels old. Red leather half-circle booths (mostly four-tops, no deuces), wood ceilings and beams. The atmosphere is medium-loud. We had a couple of larger tables around us that were a bit noisy, but not terrible. Lighting was good — not blindingly bright like so many places these days — but it was a little difficult to read the menu. I almost wish darker restaurants had small table lamps you could turn on just to read and then shut off, but the phone flashlight works just as well. Service is impeccable. Someone was always there to clear plates, refill water, take dishes away, etc. It’s exactly how service should be given the price point and overall atmosphere. Starting with the charcuterie: the bread that came with it — toasted sourdough and what I think was raisin bread — was good, but not exceptional. It was served on a stone with a delicious stone-ground mustard, some sort of honey purée, and the meat and cheese we ordered, both of which were very good. Overall, quite tasty. The real treat came when the gentleman refilling our water asked if we’d like additional bread. They brought out basically half a wheel of perfectly hot sourdough. Crisp crust, warm and tender inside, and served with a ramekin of soft butter. This is really what you want for a starter. It didn’t cost anything extra, and we ate the entire portion. The chicken pot pie is truly amazing. Make sure you ask them to flip it onto the plate. It comes out with the puff pastry sitting on top of the pot, which doesn’t look nearly as impressive as when they flip it over and spoon in the filling. My only criticism is that it definitely needs salt and pepper — without it, it was a bit bland. That said, the chicken was incredibly tender, the sauce was wonderful, and the vegetables (notably the peas and carrots) were very good. The pastry itself is outstanding. The pork chop was nicely presented and a good size — thick, and cooked correctly. She loved the sweet potato purée and the sautéed haricot verts, which were fully cooked (not overly al dente, which seems to be the trend everywhere lately). After the charcuterie, we saved a little room for dessert and had about a third of the entrees boxed up. We shared the banana split, which is made with house-made ice cream in all three flavors. The bananas were roasted perfectly, and the slivered almonds were the ideal finishing touch. A great way to end the meal, and highly recommended.
I recently visited A Restaurant in Newport Beach that was absolutely phenomenal in terms of atmosphere, service and cocktails. Every drink was beautifully crafted and packed with flavor — a true highlight of the night. Now, as a vegan, I’ll admit I was a little underwhelmed when I first looked at the menu. Vegan options were slim to none. But here’s where the night took a turn for the better: our incredible server didn’t just shrug it off — they went straight to the chef and came back with a custom plan. I ended up with a cauliflower-based appetizer that was tender, flavorful, and honestly one of the best dishes of the evening. They followed it with a vibrant veggie pasta in a rich, delicious sauce that made me feel like I wasn’t missing out at all. While I’d love to see more official vegan dishes on the menu, the effort they put into accommodating me really stood out. It wasn’t just service — it was care. If you’re looking for a place with killer drinks, a stunning setting, and staff that actually listens, this spot is worth the visit. Just cross your fingers that the chef’s in a creative mood if you’re plant-based.

“A Restaurant” has a wonderful vibe, with an abundance of locals. It’s clearly a great spot to grab drinks and unwind. However, as someone who travels often and dines at establishments this place aims to compare with, I found the experience underwhelming. Simply put, “A Restaurant” serves glorified bar food with the notable exception of their steaks, which were excellent. The charcuterie board lacked presentation and came in a disappointingly small portion. The calamari, while served with a great sauce, was heavily over-breaded. The Mac & Cheese was subpar, and though the steaks were a highlight, our server forgot the steak sauce after asking, which added to the overall letdown. After this, receiving a $400 check felt hard to justify. There are countless places across the country that run circles around this restaurant.
We booked the restaurant through OpenTable for party of 4 but changed to 7. The restaurant accommodated the change without issues. The reviews on OpenTable were mostly 5stars. They raved about the food. Unfortunately for us, the bone-in ribeye was the worst steak we’ve ever had. It did not tasted like it belongs in a steakhouse such as this. The drinks and appetizers tasted better 😞. We did have good service. The noise level was outrageous. It’s as if we were dinning in a bar (the restaurant and bar are separated by a thin wall). We were practically shouting to be heard and we sat on the far end of the restaurant, away from the bar. It looked promising but we all agreed it’s not a place to return to, esp since there’s so many better tasting steakhouses in the area.
Guy next to me was so annoying but this review is about the Chilean sea bass. It was fine but not good. Left a weird film in my mouth, did not enjoy it. Very one note flavor wise and tough for sea bass. The bartender was nice though. If I could go back in time and change to having salmon I would be much happier.
It's one of those places you either love or never need to go back to and I would be in the latter group. When you enter the restaurant, you have to walk through the bar area which was full of loud, rowdy people on a Sunday night in order to get to the the dining room. Picture a small dining room of red leather booths in a horseshoe shape. A skinny platinum blonde hostess/manager? in a tight red dress chatting up the regulars and drinking from their wine glasses. Our group ordered three different cocktails and none of them were good. The locals may love it here but the food and drinks were disappointing especially considering the price point. No need to return.

Went to A last night to watch the game/get some dinner. It's been a while since I have been there and I was pretty disappointed in the food quality. The Spicy Tuna had no flavor, the wedge salad was mushy (why use butter lettuce?) and the filet was also underwhelming. Even the horseradish didn't have any kick. I could have had a better meal at Denny's. The drinks were great as always and the atmosphere is very lively with good people watching but they appear to have taken their eye off the ball on the food.

I have never experienced such disrespect at a restaurant, especially one that claims to be a high-end establishment. I often dine out in Newport Beach, and my recent visit on Sunday Evening to A Restaurant was extremely disappointing. I went with two of my friends and we sat at the bar, ordered drinks and food, and were simply enjoying our evening. Without any courtesy or professionalism, the bouncer approached me and said, “You have three seats, now you have two because your chair is reserved,” while placing a reserved sign in front of me. There was no hello, no polite request, not even an apology—just an uncalled-for rude and hostile attitude. I told him that I had just ordered a drink and would gladly move if asked respectfully. Instead, he became even more impolite. I was shocked that a restaurant of this caliber would allow its staff to treat paying customers in this way. When I raised the issue with the manager, no one apologized or showed any effort to make things right. To make matters worse, after we moved, random people sat in the very same seats that were supposedly “reserved.” It was not only disrespectful but also incredibly unprofessional and dishonest. A restaurant’s reputation depends on hospitality and respect for its guests. Sadly, A Restaurant failed on both counts. I will not be returning and cannot recommend this place to anyone looking for a quality dining experience in Newport Beach. Hospitality at its Worst – Rude Staff, No Apologies
Had dinner in the bar, people spilling on us bumping into our table. Drunk people yelling in the bar. Definitely not your typical steakhouse more of a roadhouse get drunk and sloppy place. Obviously this is the norm as mangers stood by and did nothing. A lot of better options in the area than this. $700 for four. Wish I would have went somewhere else.
