I work up the hill and will hike all the way down and back up this steep hill because this place is so fabulous. Great coffee and excellent pastries, like EXCELLENT. Must try coffee shop on the south side of Lake Merrit
Lol I’ve gone here 4 times in a couple weeks. It’s amazing. Pastries are large, mushroom one is filled with flavor! Latte is pretty good, coffee strong. Expensive. And little cute seating. Really lovely spot.
This is a cute little cafe in the neighborhood, I was pleasantly surprised to see khachapuri on the menu. It’s a Georgian pastry with eggs and cheese that I’ve only had when made by family friends. I had the lychee iced tea, it was great. Also cafe is very dog friendly since the seating is outdoor only, which is a plus for me.
I think the coffee/espresso is good, but that's not why I come here. It's for the rotating selection of great pastries, the impressive teas (though a limited selection), and the funky but nice decor and seating. Wifi is available, and there are some plugs for the limited indoor seating. Outdoor seating is great, just a block from the lake. Nice local spot, not too crowded (or big), with a laundromat next door just in case.
Awesome coffee, great GF muffins! Have yummy looking treats for gluten lovers too! A must try if in the area! Almond milk on hand for dairy free peeps. I love visiting my daughter and walking to this coffee cafe to grab a coffee in the morning. Love the piano. Hope to hear someone playing it!☕️
A great tiny cozy neighborhood spot. On the expensive side but with very very good pastries. On nice days it's lovely to sit outside on the sidewalk! There's a piano inside the shop but it's not in great condition and I think they mostly use it to display flyers? Flyers are great but you can totally use a piano for, you know, music. Anyway the coffee here is also delicious and it is very dog and little kid friendly.
Coffee is great but the pastries are a trick! I've been visually duped three to four times until I finally learned my lesson - they all look delicious but not worth it. Again, their coffee is great.
Sweet little cafe near Lake Merritt. Nice ambiance. Tables on the sidewalk outside. There's often great music playing -- I asked the barista for his playlist one time -- very interesting picks! I get a latte there, and it's always delicious. Their baked goods are house made, shifted off of ordinary, and far superior to what you will find at other cafes. I love it when I have a chance to go to Haddon Hill Cafe!
I love Haddon Hill Cafe. I've lived in the area for 7+ years and Haddon Hill is by FAR my favorite cafe in the east bay. I recently moved and it's one of the places I will miss most in Oakland. For the starters, the espresso beverages are 100. It's hard to find a place that makes a good Mocha - most places overdo it with the chocolate but HH makes very well balanced coffee / espresso beverages. The pastries are always delicious and made fresh with their proprietary sourdough from their sister company, Leaning Tower Pizza. (KILLER PIZZA BY THE WAY!) The staff at HH are always lovely and friendly. HH also has a great community vibe - everyone in the neighborhood is super nice. Don't waste your time at other cafes :)
The cheese bun things are insane. Imagine really good pizza dough with cheese and veggies made into a bun shape. So savory and chewy and perfect! Great coffee and staff too!
Love that I can get 4 Barrel coffee just a few blocks from my apartment in Oakland instead of driving into The City. Aaaaand! Their pastries that are backed in the pizza place the next block over, are super delicious (especially the ham and cheese croisant)...yum!)
Great neighborhood cafe with good pastries and well-done espresso. Staff is very nice and I noticed that the barista is meticulous, clean, and careful. Stop on in! Plus, it has a piano!
Great coffee. Awesome pastries. I mean, they have chocolate croissants. They have almond croissants. And they have Chocolate Almond croissants!!! Hello!!!!! Baked fresh daily at their pizza location down the street.
Their coffee is good and their pastries are amazing!! How?? They get their baked goods from their parent restaurant, the pizza place across the street. The secret to their magic! I love the khachapuri.
Phenomenal local cafe. Must try khachapuri. All baked goods are made fresh daily next door at sister restaurant leaving tower of pizza. Also serve single slice Detroit pizza from leaving tower during lunch.
I have fallen head over heels for these pastries so consider this my love letter. I tried the almond croissant, khachapuri, morning bun, and the chocolate cookies and everything is so incredible. You can taste that they’ve been made within just hours of you eating them. Staff is really friendly, lots of dogs to pet, and had some enjoyable interactions with customers. Lovely lovely lovely.
This coffeehouse with its nondescript storefront is a local favorite with people lined up from the time it opens. My place for coffee while waiting for my laundry two doors down. Features amazing baked goods from the pizza place on the next block (same owners, I think), including morning buns, sourdough cheese rolls, and a delicious Khachapuri (Georgian cheese bread with spices and a runny egg on top).
Super nice, cute spot. Very understated, in a fun way. In fact, if you weren’t paying attention driving by you’d barely know it was a coffee shop. Their pastries were delicious and the coffee was great. Awesome little gem to have walking distance, because it seems like a perfect lazy Sunday morning choice.
Love this cozy cute little place right across our apartment. The service is always so friendly and warm. Quite a few seating options and more outside :) Super coffee (so many options even for non dairy users) with great varieties of savory and sweet baked goodies. Have enjoyed their sourdough rolls stuffed sausage and peppers and their veg version of muchrooms and onions. Needless to say I am in love with their almond and chocolate croissants :) It's a really lovely local place tucked in within our neighbourhood and still so close to Lake Merritt and other places in Oakland. Highly recommend :)
This is by far one of the best caffee around the area. The staff is very friendly and you can tell that they have a passion for what they do. Their pastries are baked less fresh every morning less than a block away. So you know you are getting fresh and handmade quality food.
A fabulous cafe in the Cleveland Heights neighborhood of Oakland. Near the intersection of Wesley and Brooklyn, the cafe has a well-deserved reputation for its baked goods and coffee. Outdoor seating in front of the store.
I come here infrequently, the pastry selection is always awesome. Pleasant people and great coffee. Need I say more?
Highly recommended. Pastry were very tasty. Will definitely come back!
Stopped by for just a croissant and it was delicious and gooey. Great to take to the cascades ans enjoy on a sunny bench.

best french style butter croissants and cafe mocha in quiet neighborhood on weekend, few chairs and table outside, European style. young families, walking the dog, others walking by leisurely
Pastries are absolutely delight in here, I love the fact that its one of the few cafes where they have a restroom and a place to sit, both indoors and outside. Outstanding service by the most genuine barista, Ricki. This had been a hidden gem I just happened to run across and this is exactly what the lake needs, a real café. I wish their hours were longer, they close at 2pm sharp and I like my metal and punk bands but not necessarily for an early AM, café lounge music is probably the only thing I would leave as a constructive criticism. This is also a great café to read a book, do people watching and get a sense of gentrified Oakland, old vibes meeting the new future, tesla drivers and dog owners are definitely regulars, and so again is a multi layer of a bit of everything which makes the coffee experience worth the walk, the time and the money.
Excellent pastries and khachapuri (especially the later). I believe they're all made across the street at Leaning Tower of Pizza. The hot chocolate and tea selection are also great. I'm not a coffee guy, so you'll have to take others opinions if you're looking for that.
Great drip coffee! I wish I had asked what beans they used. My stomach is sensitive so I don’t drink coffee often but this 12 oz drip I got was so flavorful! Also some very tasty pastries, my friend and I got the caramelized onion and mushroom croissant and I definitely want to try the guava one the next time I go. Friendly service and a cute neighborhood spot. Not really a sit down space, but they do have outdoor seating for people to use while they wait or if it’s just two of you. Great place to grab coffee and a bite and then take a little walk by the lake.
My croissant was perfectly buttery and flaky, and my latte was bursting with flavor. The roast is a little brighter than I usually choose; next time I'll ask if there are options. The proprietor was friendly and engaging, and service was prompt. Only potential minus, at 2pm on a summer day all the seating was outdoors, albeit on a quiet neighborhood street. Would absolutely go back.

Coffee was great, pastries were awesome (they make them in their pizza shop). Vibe is a cool hipster coffee window. Downsides: no indoor seating or restroom, and it’s one of the least diverse places I’ve been to in oakland. A little pretentious, very Portland vibes. Would go again.
As I approached Cafe 504 I saw a crowd of folks milling about out front. People looked lively and friendly. The vibe didn't change as I entered. One of the patrons had found a home at the piano in the back and was gloriously sharing his craft. As he put it, "I don't have a piano at home right now and I couldn't resist." The staff was friendly and knew most everyone who came through the door. But I was welcomed as if I was one of the regulars. Good people all around. Free WiFi is available and outlets weren't hard to find. - Now if only they can rustle up some vanilla syrup I'll call on Cafe 504 often. - I only tried the coffee but people seemed to enjoy the food.
Great quality pastries at high (top of the market) prices. Generally like rotating menus, but no way to check in advance and if you are going for something specific (let’s be honest the guava) you gotta just show up to find out if it’s in that day.
This place is lovely and has enormous potential. Great atmosphere: cozy, quaint, friendly, and welcoming. Coffee is top-notch (you can even buy their small batch roasted beans) and baked goods are most often very tasty. Would love to give it 5 stars, but these are the reasons I've docked it (for now): *In my experience there are no dark roast options. I'm not a fan of light/flowery roasts. Personal preference on this one. *Croissants are kinda hit or miss. That's a no-no with croissants, especially, in my book. *Prices are a tad high...which is understandable for such a nice small community business (there's not much else in the immediate Haddon Hill area other than the sister pizza joint). But I find myself just wanting to come here for the experience, not the coffee or baked goods...which is sorta problematic for a coffee shop with high prices. Also also, I wish they had fresh bread more consistently/predictably! Wish list item...

This bakery is a little off the beaten path, so I forget about it sometimes, but they have some of the best pastries in the Bay Area. I stopped by today and had a mushroom croissant that was absolutely delicious. First time seeing this one, but I hadn’t been in quite a while. A little pricey at $7.50, but the size is generous. Highly recommend.
I was so excited to try this place but overall it was a letdown. The coffee was mediocre. The Khachapuri was excellent, the mushroom sourdough bun was an undercooked ball of mush and the guava cheese pastry was not good. All the cheese oozed out and there was a brick of cold guava paste in the middle. I’ll definitely get the khachapuri again but not eager to try anything else 🫤
It's fine if you like light roasted coffee because they only have one roast. I threw my coffee out because I don't. They also have no wifi, no restroom and only outdoor tables. The baked goods looked delicious.
No seating inside, plenty outside. The staff were either taking advantage of California''s new recreational use laws or the least qualified people to ever hold down a job. Only ordered 2 coffees and a scone. The guy asked what size coffee and when we said medium, he proceeded to ask if that was "an 8 oz. or 12". The "large" Americano was served in a small cappuccino cup and we had to stand at the counter trying to get someone to look our way long enough we could ask to get the scone (literally 2-3 minutes) after getting the 16 oz cup of coffee, you know, the medium 12 oz we wanted. It was quaint, and the pastries looked great, and I prefer locally owned/small coffee houses, but if anyone has ever wondered where they have all gone, just take a visit to this hole on the hill. They no doubt have a loyal base, but that is due to the fact they are the closest coffee shop near a slew of apartments.
They sell day old pastries and charge full price without letting customers know they’re day-olds. The staff occasionally forgets or messes up an order. That said, when the pastries are not a day old, and the staff (who are generally pretty nice) are paying attention to what they’re doing, this place can get five stars. In the past couple of months though, they’ve been 2-3 stars in my experience.
Place is sweet ..spilling cafe tables out on the sidewalk..its cozy and hip and a short walk from/to the lake. Im docking one star 'cause online it says its coffee breakfast/brunch place ...and its really a coffee (sorta healthy) pastry shop which is great&all ..and they did look good... but if we'd stayed we'd all still be cracked out on sugar and caffeine. Barista said they knew too! Waste of time for us hungry for real food folks.. we'd already moved our table into the sun leashed up the dog made friends w the next table and started looking for a high chair for the 15month old. Now she'll have trust issues. First world problems I know but Boo!
Low key, small coffee shop with a small selection of pastries. The pastries are quite nice, the coffee is adequate. Both indoor and outdoor seating available.

I searched pancakes. This is not a restaurant, its a cafe. Which us fine. They heat well, very nice staff.

Me and my family are/were regular customers of this place for quite sometime. However, i've noticed recently that their service and overall quality of food has gone downhill significantly overtime. We had just gone just yesterday and we were quite appaled with the quality of the food. We had ordered two hot chocolates, a redeye, and 3 detroit styled pizzas, which we asked for them to be warmed up. The person taking our order looked stunned for a bit and asked what a redeye was (whatever, not a big deal). When our food was ready, we noticed that the pizzas were not even warmed up at all. The hot chocolates tasted like straight hot milk with the slightest amount of chocolate in them. Another time i had went there and ordered a hot chocolate, i WATCHED one of the baristas try his hardest to pump out all the chocolate syrup left in the container and give me a SMALL when i had paid for a large. On top of the wildly varying food quality, it is extremely expensive for the drinks and pasteries they have. They should not be priced how they are if the quality and service is going to swing from pretty decent to borderline deplorable. I did not want to see the downfall of this place, really. I remember when coming here was actually worth the time and money being spent. Its quite a shame.
Coffee quality seems to vary day by day; most days it’s weak or burnt, though sometimes it’s brewed well. Prices for the baked goods are astonishingly high - double those of nearby (world class) Arizmendi. I live in the neighborhood so it’s convenient but I don’t get “neighborhood cafe” vibes from the service.
I bet it was nice before covid. Order at the door. The help clearly don't want to be there. The sullen blonde boy just stands and stares at you or walks away, rather than instruct you to swipe your card. When not actually taking an order, the help slump un a line of chairs, fully engaged in their phones. Not welcoming at all. Maybe worse, the pastries are ALWAYS burnt. Seems someone would think to reduce the heat by 25 degrees. ...or take them out earlier. I come by every week because the coffee is decent. I keep my hopes up for improvement!
Decided to give this place a try after I finished doing my laundry next door. The older man working the cash register was lovely. The barista with the nose ring was rude & not welcoming at all!. It was clearly my first time there and when I asked if they had any sugar for my coffee, she rolled her eyes and handed me a bottle that looked like it was either honey or syrup. She handed it to me with attitude as if I should've known that was the sugar. I was expecting either sugar packets or some type of sugar grains, not liquid. The cute old man saw me all confused & clarified that was their sugar, that they had diluted it. Perhaps she was having a bad morning but her attitude needs to change. She's scaring customers away.
Great coffee, disappointing service. I’ve visited this place three times, hoping the service would improve, but unfortunately, I’ve consistently had a negative experience with the same staff member. She doesn’t seem approachable, speaks in a very low tone, and often comes across as annoyed. It’s a shame, because the café has so much potential (the coffee is truly excellent) but the customer service takes away from the overall experience.

There is no dine in, No wifi, and certainly not a good place to work on a laptop. Their google profile falsely claims otherwise. Huge bummer, was hoping to get some work done there; but there’s only outdoor seating and no bathroom. FYI there is no public bathroom at the quick stop, so y’all really shouldn’t tell customers that there is one.
