The service was wonderful - friendly & excitedly told us about the menu options when we mentioned it was our first time in. The dining room was clean & spacious with beautiful tables. The food was *PHENOMENAL*. All sides are house made & the meats are slow cooked for 14 hours making it juicy and tender. The brisket sandwiches had a big portion of meat on them - fall apart meat with a deliciously seasoned edge & the brioche bun was lightly toasted on one side to give it a satisfying crunch. While we stopped this time as we made our way up the hill, we will happily make the drive up from Sacramento specifically to have lunch/ dinner at Hog Wild again (possibly with our pup in tow as they also have a covered outdoor dining area). UPDATE: We indeed have made it back up there on several occasions - baby back ribs, chicken apple sausage, pulled pork, beef ribs, chicken breast - they've all been super tasty. Mac & cheese, green beans, & cornbread are our house's favorite sides. A word of warning! They DO run out of items, especially on busy Apple Hill weekends (mid-September through mid November), so go early!
Local bbq joint that made it on dinners drive ins and dives. Like most bbq joints the first thing thay hits you is the smell. You could smell it all the way into to town as you drove up. Carrying all the classic smoked meat selections from ribs, tritip and bbq pork, you will not go home hungry. Sides selection is good and not over whelming like some joints. Food was good but in our visit it felt like there could have been more smoke amd or seasoning. Again not bad just wanted more flavor. Sides we good and the right portion size for the meals. Staff is super friendly and helpful which always makes a place stand out. Make sure to grab a bite if in the area.
Omg this place was really a treat. The staff were amazing and super friendly. The baby back ribs were just so good and the bbq dipping sauce just added additional greatness to it. Brisket was so tasty and juicy. Mashed potatoes, green beans, and macaroni with cheese was good. I’m definitely returning to this restaurant when I am in the area.
Stopped by on the way home from Boa Vista Hill because my husband was craving BBQ, and we came across this place on his maps. When we walked in, Randy greeted us right away and asked if it was our first time. We told him it was, and he kindly offered to go over the menu with us — which was super helpful! We ended up ordering one of the family feast meals (I forgot the exact name), which came with our choice of three meats — we went with baby back ribs, chicken breast, and brisket — plus three sides: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and pinto beans. It also came with 2 cornbreads. Randy and the rest of the staff were so accommodating and even checked in on us after we got our food. Everything was delicious, and the service made the whole experience even better. We really enjoyed our visit — thank you!
On a whim, my friends and I were craving bbq post backpacking in desolation wilderness and we found this restaurant while en route to SF. We arrived closer towards their closing time (~4:15p) and sadly weren’t able to try a majority of the meats (which means we’ll have to come back). I ordered the pull pork, Caesar salad, sautéed green beans which included the sweet cornbread with honey butter since they were out of rolls. By chance they had extra brisket and our friends put in an order so we could taste it and it was absolutely delicious! I’d definitely come back and order the brisket and mac and cheese, and/or mashed potatoes with gravy.
Wow, just wow.. We've traveled hours to find "Great" BBQ and this place hits the mark and checks every box. My receipt says Baby backs, but I assure you, they were St. Louis. The Ribs were tender, moist and fall off the bone with a great Smokey flavor (10 out of 10). As advertised, the mashed Potatoes & Gravy were yummy (7) and the Mac & Cheese were great as well according to the wife. We will be traveling the hour and a half everytime we want or need our Rib fix.. Great Job Hog Wild.. A+A+A+
My experience was phenomenal. Walked in with a larger party, and was immediately greeted and had a table put together to accommodate. Food was amazing, we had the brisket, pulled pork and baby back ribs, all were tender and flavorful. Macaroni and mashed potatoes were great, and so were the large cornbread! Portions were sizable and pretty accurate to serving size for family platter. Service was 10/10, super friendly and there was one woman, who we weren’t able to catch the name of, that made the whole atmosphere comfortable, and like she was serving us at her own home. Definitely worth the trip!
We hired hog wild bbq to cater our wedding last September and it was nothing short of amazing! Mary made everything so easy and stress free for us. We went into the restaurant to do our tasting and it was delicious! It was the first and only place we tasted and knew we had to go with them!! When it came to the day of our wedding her team was so sweet and so professional! The food was AMAZING! We got so many compliments on it from our guests! I highly recommend them for any event or just a yummy lunch!
Probably the most authentic Texas style bbq in the Sacramento region. Last year I took a trip to Dallas and had some amazing bbq. When I got back to Sacramento, I looked near and far and couldn't find anything remotely close to what I had in Texas. That was until I saw Hog Wild BBQ featured on Food Network. Since then, I've been itching to go. A year later, my wife and family made it out and we weren't disappointed. This place has the best baby backs and St. Louis ribs around. Hands down night and day better compared to Urban Roots, Tank House, MacQues and all the rest of the bbq places in the region. The brisket was good, but we were a little late so when we got there, it was a little cold so I couldn't get a good judge of it. In terms of sides, the sides were massive and good. We got potato salad and green beans w/ onions. Those were really good. The cornbread was delicious and the honey butter was something the wife couldn't get enough of. We ordered the platter to feed 8 people because we had 4 couples on the trip and it was TOO much food. I can't believe I'm saying that. We each had enough leftovers for a full dinner. They did not skimp on the serving size which is something I truly admire. Lastly, the atmosphere and service was AMAZING. The owner made us feel so welcome and so proud to be eating there. I'm not trying to be fictitious when I say, she gave us "old school customer service love". It was so wonderful and she was so attentive and pleasant that we wanted to go back just to hang out with her. Overall, best bbq in the Sacramento region. Don't go anywhere else.
One of the legit bbq place in the area. We went there 2 times around 3:30pm and they sold out both times. We finally came around 12pm on Saturday and went in with no line up! There are several indoor tables and few patio tables but it got busy quickly. When we left around 1pm, the line was out the door. We ordered The Hangtown Sampler with brisket, baby back ribs, St. Louis ribs and sides (mac & cheese, coleslaw & pinto beans). We sat at the patio and the friendly server brought out our food in about 5 mins after we ordered. The staffs checked on us several times and were super friendly.
There was at least a dozen queueing when they opened at 11:30. Fast ordering but the order took awhile (at least 20mins). The food was totally worth the wait though. Ordered the Brisket, Ribs and Pulled pork. I liked the Brisket than the other ones we ordered. Plenty of tables and seats inside (perfectly air conditioned temperature), there are more tables/seats outside (no A/C). Best barbecue and my favorite around the area.
Hog Wild BBQ was a great find in Placerville! I was craving some good BBQ today and the meat here did not disappoint. I ordered the 3-meat combo with two sides, and everything was delicious. The ribs were juicy, tender, sweet, and smoky. The brisket was perfectly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender, while the jalapeño sausage was bursting with flavor. The green beans were fresh, crunchy, garlicky, and cooked just right. The mashed potato salad was tasty and seasoned well. The only miss for me was the mac n’ cheese — it was pretty bland and had a floury taste to the sauce. Overall, they definitely know how to do BBQ right here. I’ll be back for sure! Just a heads-up — it gets really busy during peak hours, so expect a 20–40 minute wait.
First time customer. The wife an I Ordered the Hang town Sampler with 3 Meat and 3 sides with Brisket, Ribs, Sausage and Mac N Cheese, Pinto beans and Mashed Potatoes. It was a good portion. The meats were tasty and come not sauced which I prefer but unfortunately a tad dry. The sides were also tasty but again the Mac N Cheese and Mashed potatoes were also dry. While I still enjoyed my meal I do wish for more moisture. The BBQ sauced helped but I like moist dry rubbed meat or if sauced if must be charred in. Overall I would come back again for another try but maybe less food. I say it was a 4.1 overall.
I've been here several times before and always been pretty pleased. However, yesterday a friend of mine and I went and we were both more than a little disappointed. Whoever was responsible for smoking the brisket didn't do a really good job. The fat cap was way too thick and it had not been rendered down anywhere near enough, so 25% of our brisket order was unedible flabby white fat. The chicken was good, though a little drier than usual, and my friend said his pulled pork was okay. Today, all of the compliments are reserved for the sides. Our mashed potatoes with white gravy, beans, coleslaw and mac and cheese or all outstanding and really couldn't be criticized at all. Again, just a little bit disappointed. To be honest, the friend I was with does quite a bit of smoking himself and has become quite proficient and I think his food is of a much higher quality than what we got today. I know this place can do better. Perhaps their pitnaster needs to supervise the other people more closely.
I genuinely hate leaving poor reviews of local businesses, but given that Hog wild has such a high precedence preceeding them, I was sorely disappointed. Not sure if we just caught them on a bad day, which considering they had a line out the door, we figured the name fit the praise. Unless everyone there had no idea how good barbecue is supposed to be. Got the 3 meat, 3 side plate. Brisket, chicken, and baby back ribs with sides of mac n cheese, beans, and mashed potatoes and gravy. Unfortunately all of the meats were barely edible. The chicken arrived tough/cold with little to no flavor and the brisket and ribs tasted dry and old. Literally like they had been smoked/cooked days before. We left more than 75% of the meats uneaten even though we were very hungry. The sides and service are the only reason I am leaving 2/5 instead of 1/5 stars as they arrived actually hot and tasted relatively fresh. We even overhead the group next to us say the best part of the platter they got was the house salad, which for a bbq place is not a good sign. Considering the positive reviews and accolades of the business we expected some delicious stuff, but unfortunately was some of the saddest bbq in the northern california area I've ever had.
Honestly the FOOD was a big disappointment. We were so excited to try this bbq place but it was a huge let down. The food had absolutely no flavor, I had to add a lot of salt just to make it edible. Our food came out on the edge of being cold just slightly warm. The dinner roll was completely cold like it came out of the fridge I couldn’t even get the butter to melt on the dinner roll. The jalapeno cheddar sausage didn’t have much flavor either and was pretty dry. My brisket was very dry and didn’t have flavor except for big chunks of black pepper. The macaroni didn’t taste to great besides being cheesy. The only good thing on the plate was the cornbread. The sauces they left on the table to go on the meat were bbq original, spicy, and chipotle which tasted like sour water somehow. The portions of the food were quite small and not worth the money at all. The women’s BATHROOM was not very clean but the men’s bathroom was disgustingly dirty. The SERVICE was great they were quick and on it. Sadly we will not be returning here or recommending this place to anyone.
