One of my favorite restaurants in the downtown Provo area. Delicious food, great service and good drinks. The menu has some good variety with tacos, burgers, hanger steak and other entrees. There is also a great coctail list and some wine by glass and bottle. Service is very attentive and friendly. Restaurant is cozy, probably like 12 tables inside, no bar or outside seating that I am aware of. Make a reso to ge safe. Have been back again couple times and has been good every time.
My friend and I tried a bunch of the dishes and everything was so amazing! Sadie was our server and she was so friendly and helpful. We had the lavender honey fry bread which was soooo good, the salad with cactus pear dressing, the pozole, street tacos, and another kind of fry bread with a bunch of toppings that was delicious. I got the impression that every item on the menu was probably the same amazing quality and taste. We can’t wait to come back!
Don’t kill the messenger! It was our first time there and it was a good 😊 experience for us. However, I did not know this place was infused with Native American culture. I lived in Yuma AZ, Tucson AZ before, and traveled all over AZ. I even met the famous musician Gabriel Ayala, Native American. Again, I am just a viewer like yourself wanting to find that perfect spot to go every time you are in town. My husband in the blue long sleeve shirt liked it very much , and if husband likes it .. then we are happy 🤭😁. Me, I just needed more salt 🧂 I felt like I was eating the food from a heart ❤️ /diabetes patients. This place is not bad at all and I think it’s a pretty healthy place to eat at if you are looking for something clean and a healthy dish 🥘. I think this is for you! Furthermore, I do love their unique chandelier designs and seatings arrangements and of course, their meal presentations. I would absolutely give them another try. I don’t think 🤔 one time is not enough to enjoy a brunch.,maybe a dinner date with my husband.
In the area and decided to give this place a try for lunch. Cozy atmosphere with delicious food! Hostess and server were friendly and attentive. My whole meal was exactly what I was craving. The chipotle sauce that came with our fries was sooo good! Loved the sweet potato wedges with my chicken sandwich, too. Even the ice tea was delicious! Hubby was happy with his blue cheese burger. We both loved the fry bread instead of a bun on our sandwiches. It was all so good!
I love the food here! I always get the Navajo Tacos with the green chili pork- yum! We got the Honey Lavender Navajo Bread as an appetizer, and it was tasty, although the lavender bits were a little intense flavor-wise if you get a lot in one bite. The bread is delicious and will melt in your mouth 🤤 Call ahead to reserve a table since it can be packed on busy days and nights.
Ordered the chicken fried steak and the bison meatloaf. Both superb. The chicken had a wonderful cream sauce and the potatoes were well complimented to it. The bison was hearty with carrots inside and the veg on the mashed potatoes paired very well. Also had the honey lavender fry bread, no honey butter actually needed on the side, sweet enough without. Will come back again.
We made reservations in the event it was a busy Saturday night. Gabe was our server, he made excellent recommendations and helped with dietary accommodations. The green chili goat cheese queso was delicious with the tortilla chips, the wedge was delicious with a spin of spicy which was excellent. We had the Bishop cocktail which was sweet and smooth and Prickly pear Moscow mule which was a great twist to a Mule, both were delicious. Green chili Navajo taco and Bison burger were delicious and fresh. It was a lot of food however it did not feel heavy. Attention to detail with the meals and atmosphere was appreciated. Last thing that got me to so quickly leave a review was the acts of kindness from the waiters who fed a homeless gentleman, for this alone I will be coming back.
My 5 Stars would go directly to our Server, Sadie 😍 She was amazing!!! Such a sweet young lady & handled my super 'picky' boyfriend like a champ! 👏 After just moving to the area, from Vegas, it has been a challenge to find a good drink (cocktail menu). This place was "Vegas-worthy" 😋 Bison Burger & Mojito were on point! Honey Lavender Fry Bread - amazing!!!! Orange Habanero Creme Brulee - fantastic!!!! 🤌 SO good & your girl, Sadie, totally made our night!!!!
I dined with alone on a busy Friday and the seating is a bar near the back so there’s some traffic behind you. Service was quick. I was excited to try the Honey Lavender Bread. It come out fast. Puffy but deflates once you cut it. Perfectly sweet and light with the lavender aroma. For dinner I went with the Steak Salad and I was delicious. Perfect amount of steak for me! My waiter was friendly and I think it was nice overall.
Absolutely delicious and the service top notch. Our server Sam super nice and attentive was on top of her game tonight. We tried one of their salads, the jowl pork tacos, their lavender honey fry bread, wine, their cactus pear lemonade and their filet mignon brucetta. Overall a great time at the location the food is great and big portions so you could share some of these dishes between two people. The prices were affordable and the vibe was just so nice you could have a conversation and hear each other. The decor was also 👍 nice. We will be back when in town.
It was my first time visiting the restaurant. I could not decide between the green pozole or the red one. At the suggestion of the nice young lady who was my waitress, I went with the red pozole. I do not say this lightly, as I have eaten pozole at restaurants maby times. The pozole was the best pozole I have ever eaten. The broth was bursting with flavor, just the right balance of light rich spices. The homeny was tender and the chunks of beef super delicious..the fresh baked fry bread was exceptional as well.
We loved this restaurant. The standouts on the menu are the steak tacos and the hog gel tacos or nachos. We had the southwestern Caprese salad, which was a fun twist on the typical version. This one had pickled or sautéed peppers on top. We also had the steak tacos with caramelized onions, andblue cheese, and Monterey Jack cheese and radishes and jalapeños. Very delicious. The cilantro lime rice was also very tangy and yummy. We loved the pinto beans as well.
Delicious food. Distinct flavors and fresh ingredients. We tried a variety of appetizers and entrees and everything was excellent. Their shrimp and grits is really good, but don't expect it to compare to New Orleans, but pretty close. The Buffalo burgers were fantastic. The cactus lemonade was better than I expected. A great flavor and not too sweet. The place was packed, but our server was on top of everything and the food was served fast which was surprising based on the crowd. We will definitely eat there again.
Recently found myself in Provo for a work event, and Black Sheep Café was recommended by a coworker so of course I had to give it a try! Wow, just wow! Food here is amazing! I enjoyed the steak tacos with cilantro rice that was mind blowing good and pinto beans that were super flavorful. Can’t say enough about these tacos… So inventive and tasty! Meat was so tender it literally melted in your mouth . My colleague had the chicken sandwich on Navajo flatbread with street corn… Although I didn’t taste her chicken sandwich she said she absolutely loved it, but she did give me a bite of the street corn and it was amazing… Highly recommend!
Loved everything we ordered from here! Bruschetta was tasty, and the pork taco was insanely good. The portions were perfect and the price is worth the quality of food. The decor inside is really nice and the service was great. Highly recommend this restaurant.
Unique. That seems to be the word for this café. Indeed it was. We made a reservation because we wanted to make sure to get seats with my children who were visiting from out of town. Two couldn't make it. Sad. Low prices were not on the menu. This is more than your average restaurant. The food did not disappoint and matched the prices. There aren't a lot of tables so make a reservation or plan on waiting or if you're lucky, there will be open tables. The food. We started with a $7 piece of honey lavender frybread. Unique flavor. Didn't know you could eat lavender. It's the same frybread used for the Navajo taco. My son got the bottle of craft root beer. He was surprised to see it was one he can get in the local grocery store where he lives in Idaho. He said it was a pretty good soda. I got the Navajo taco, green Chile pork. Smaller than I would have expected but the flavors were well received. The wife got the Hog Jowl tacos. Most tender pork we've ever had! Highly recommend just for the meat! My son got the steak tacos. He said they were very delicious and the meat was cooked like it should be. We all agreed that the side rice was very delicious. The beans were as one should expect. Pretty bland but that's fine with me. I l liked them. Over all a great experience. Not a place I can afford monthly but for that special occasion, I highly recommend this place!
So. Incredibly. Good. Their Hog Jowl Nachos are the best nachos I've ever had. I had the green chili Navajo taco and it was good but not mind blowing. Not like the nachos. My friend had the steak tacos and those were really amazing. Two friends had the fried chicken and that was good as well. For drinks, the cactus pear lemonade was really good- refreshing and not too sweet. The Naughty Palmer was good too, very aromatic, zesty, refreshing and delicious. For appetizer- the lavender honey friend bread was SO GOOD. Definitely eat here. Great ambience with dim lighting and soft music in the background.
Great food and awesome service. It isn’t cheap but it is delicious. Our server was fast and friendly. Portion sizes were generous and the drinks were great. We will be back again to try out the rest of the menu that we couldn’t have because it all looked and sounded so good.
We haven't been to Black in about six years and decided to try it again for my husband's birthday. We made a reservation and the owner seated us promptly. The waitress was great! We tried the cactus lemonade which is really good! We all shared the hog jowl nachos and green queso for appetizers. They both were delicious. For our entrees we tried the hog jowl tacos, steak tacos, and bison and bbq bacon burgers. The flavor combos were out of this world! I highly recommend this restaurant. Can't wait to come back and more dishes!
The food is so good. Get a reservation. A lot of people tried to walk in even though we were there on a Monday night. It has limited seating so use Yelp and get your reservation. The ambiance is amazing. I loved the chandelier and gorgeous Native American contemporary paintings. Our server was so friendly and excited to help us. We ordered green Chile goat cheese queso for our appetizer. It was so delicious. I loved how creamy it was and the fresh made tortilla chips were divine. For main dish, we got pazole and Navajo taco. The pazole was very flavorful and came with fry bread. The Navajo taco was super yummy with green Chile pork. It was super yummy. The portion was a bit small but it came with rice and beans. The beans were my favorite and the rice was a bit dry. We loved eating there and it was fun to watch people walk down the street. We saw some people on a "blind date" or at least it seemed that way. Two people were blindfolded and being led down by the street by smiling college kids. Definitely recommend Black Sheep Cafe and can't wait to come back and try new menu items.
Unique and flavorful. Not quite sure why people be lying in the reviews about taste. My thoughts are that they may have been infected with covid at the time. How does goat cheese or arugula not have flavor? Impossible. They know how to do it here, and they do it well. We will definitely be returning.
My first time visiting Utah and this neat creative restaurant. I loved trying this type of cuisine (Southwestern/Native American). The menu had some items that you don’t typically see at restaurants (great - when dining out, I prefer to order food that I can’t make at home). I ordered the lavender honey fry bread, beef taco on fry bread, jalapeño margarita and habanero crème brûlée. The food was colorful and delicious. Great presentation. Awesome experience. The waitress was kind, attentive and friendly.
Had a great experience here with some coworkers. Our server was great and had good recommendations. The food was absolutely delicious and the dessert was just as good! Definitely will be coming back the next time I'm in Provo!
I wanted to take my wife on a date to a local restaurant that we’ve never tried. I discovered Black a sheep Cafe and the idea of Native American cuisine sounded interesting. We ordered the spicy shrimp and cheese grits as an appetizer, which was outstanding! We ordered the chimichanga and blue tortilla enchiladas, both of which were also very tasty. We had a side of Rosemary fries, which were okay. Overall, the food was a very good portion size and tasted fresh. It was all delicious and we were happy that we came. Prices were a bit high, which we expected, but it was a great experience. Would definitely come again.
Great experience. Small but cozy cafe with a nice ambiance and friendly and attentive staff. Menu is concise but the food is great. We tried the flat bread, Black Sheep Burger and G.O.A.T. Burger. They were unique and delicious.
Great food and great service! It’s little pricy, but the food is good and most plates looked big enough to share. We got the honey lavender frybread and Blue’s Fire Grits. I’d recommend both! The pozole was also good. Parking: street or free public parking garage on the same block
Fun note… The young man at the table behind us who was talking very loudly was trying to impress his date by regaling her with his favorite episodes of How I Met Your Mother… And how he was trying to improve his signature so people could read it… Don’t be this guy. Instead order some food! Wow! Native American inspired cuisine…? I had no idea what to expect. We started with an Arnold Palmer and chased it with a Black sheep salad. Excellent. The Tres Tapas Sampler was great. Basically it’s three fried bread tacos each with a different type of sauce- one barbecue (Which was surprising this sweet), one green and one red… All delicious. Note this is not Mexican - it’s more nuanced and delicious. It’s a cool menu and there is so much left to try. Hog Jowl Nachos? I hear they are delicious, but I wasn’t in a jolly mood. Getting these next time. By the way the service was outstanding and the interior is funky cool.
Every time I go to Black Sheep Cafe I come away happy. I love everything on their menu- this time I tried one of their staple Navajo tacos and shared their Lavender Fry Bread with a friend as an appetizer. Their food is high quality and so rich in flavor, the options are unique- especially for Provo, and their staff is extremely kind and helpful, which helps when it's impossible to decide what you want when you go. Highly recommend for a lunch or dinner spot that is SO GOOD.
David was our server and he was so friendly and helpful without being overbearing. The food is so good. The cactus pear lemonade is LIFE CHANGING. We got a Navajo taco and salad and we were both satisfied. A little pricey so it’s not a cheap lunch but, but it sure is a tasty one
Drove down from SLC to eat food at Black Sheep. It was well worth the drive. We’ll be back. The steak tacos were a little chewy but the flavors were great. The GOAT burger was a striking culinary experience. The service was great. Thanks David! Great ambiance. Enjoyed the unique art.
A real treat for the tastebuds! The BBQ pork on fry bread was really unique—and very sweet. I felt like I was eating a BBQ pork maple syrup pancake—that’s not a bad thing but a surprise. Some lime would add balance here. My partner opted for green chili stew with vegetables. Outstanding stew! The cactus lemonade is a beautiful color, but is super sweet. I’d return and next time I’m going for the green chili chicken nachos.
Very good food. Southwest food flare with emphasis on Navajo fry bread meals. Good pork, beef and chicken options. The sweet potato fries are off the chart. Try the street corn.
I was intrigued by the opportunity to taste Native American food. I am a very picky/boring eater so was feeling that it would be a challenge to find something I like. Much to my happy surprise, the green chili stew was delicious! A very hearty, earthy flavor and completely satisfying. The servers were upbeat and efficient. This was a treat. Give it a try!
This place is a flavor bomb. The Navajo taco on house-made fry bread with green chile pork stew is legitimately one of the best things I’ve eaten all year—flaky, pillowy fry bread soaked with that smoky, spicy stew. Finished with the wojapi berry frybread dessert and nearly cried it was so good. The adobe pork tacos and hog jowl posole are also incredible. Love that they blend Native American and Southwestern flavors so respectfully and deliciously. Staff is super knowledgeable about the menu and the heritage behind it. Cool art on the walls, chill vibe, and they’ve got local beers on tap. If you haven’t been yet, fix that immediately.
Love to go here for any special occasion! Their beans are amazing! I will say that the dinner portions seem to be less than lunch portions, but either one will fill you. Desserts are delicious and the lemonade is as well! You really can’t go wrong here. I have brought family and friends here and they always want to go back when they are in town!
Delicious food. We ordered the Bison Tacos & Bison Burger. Both delicious! Our friends always order the Bleu burger (they allow in evening even though it's only on the lunch menu). Portions are huge!! Easily shareable if your want room for dessert & appetizer. Don't miss out on the sweet potato fries!! I love the connection of Native American food with a gourmet twist! May require a reservation especially on the weekend. Groups over 6 need to reserve day before by calling.
Super excited to come try the bison meatloaf; got here when they opened and they were out. Reluctantly tried the steak tacos, and they were incredible.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Good location in downtown Provo. Loved the traditional Navajo taco. The cactus lemonade was delicious! The Southwestern hot chocolate had a "Red Hots" flavor to it which I personally don't like but my husband does: he downed it all! Sweet potato wedges were so plump and tasty. I loved their take on fry sauce!
I went recently and was a little disappointed with the Navajo taco. I had it before and I remember it tasting better… the bread under got soggy because of the green chile sauce and it was just bland 🥴I asked the waiter that served us and she recommends any of the burgers. My husband had the steak salad and that was yummy so maybe just stick with burgers and anything American.
The food here wonderfully unique. I personally love the hog jowl tacos and the Navajo tacos which are the two most popular dishes. The cactus pear lemonade is very good although very expensive for what you get. The food here is has great flavor that will make you want to try everything on the menu.
The chimichanga was just okay. The beans didn’t have much flavor :( Thankfully the steak and drinks saved the day. I didn’t care too much for the veggies that came with my steak, they were almost too sweet with the glaze they had. The drinks were so yummy! Highly recommend the cactus pear Moscow mule. The service was decent. It wasn’t fairly busy when we went to eat, but I could see that quite a few people had to wait some time for their meals. They did forget to bring one item to our table but when asked they made sure they brought it out. Overall I think this would be a great place to come to for a little date night :)
Great service, mediocre food, tiny venue. The service we got throughout our visit was great, lots of great recommendations via our waitress and our food and drinks came out fast. The chicken was average, the rosemary fries lacked any flavor, the beans and rice were also very bland. The Navajo tacos were good but the portions were small; the hog jowl tacos at least had some flavor. The burger we had ordered was requested to have no mayonnaise or onions however it came out with both. The venue is miniature, you have to go back and through the end of the restaurant, remember a code, and type in the secret password in a shared space between businesses just to go into the single toilet that have to offer. With the quality of food for the over $20 for any dish, tiny venue which practically requires a reservation, I most likely will not be returning.
Heard good things about this place! We had reservations on a Friday evening, but they put us in the corner table right next to the entrance, hot lights are directly shining on your face - super hot area and their A/C was not working either so the temperature inside the restaurant was uncomfortable. Appetizers were probably BETTER than their actual entrees. Do NOT get the hanger steak 🥩, it had some balsamic/sweet glaze on it (which does go well with a steak in general in my opinion) and the steak 🥩 was overdone; it tasted like a 2 day old pot roast. Waitress was accommodating and offered to get it redone or get me something else, which I opted for the wedge salad 🥗. Wedge salad’s dressing tasted like fry sauce , which was also strange! We would only probably come back for the appetizers next time.
I was not a fan of this place. I personally would not go back for the price and overall flavors of the food. It was OK. To be fair, I know a few people who LOVE this place, and make it their annual birthday dinner. I liked the atmosphere, and no complaints with service. Great location in Provo as well.
Hmmm…interesting. I was pretty excited to try this place as it was well recommended by many. I ordered the BBQ Buffalo Bacon Burger with Rosemary fries on the side. I will say that the food was definitely fresh and good quality. The flavors are just different. The sauce was heavy on the maple and that was just different for me. My wife ordered the Navajo Tacos…also just different. The food was a little pricey but it just did not sit well with my wife or I. Maybe it was an off night or we ordered the wrong thing but definitely didn’t love it. The staff and service were great. Friendly people. It’s a small little place and was quiet enough to have good conversation. My heart was sad that it just didn’t taste that great to me. It was quality ingredients and a little fancy but just didn’t taste/sit well, as I had hoped.
So the taco Navajo bread was fantastic. I mean who woulda thunk to have something so fluffy and deep fried. With that said, I don't know if I loved any of the other food. The red beef chili was pretty good. The green chili pork was good and tender when it was pulled but the chunky pieces not so tender or flavorable. The bbq pork... Hard pass ... It's a cool concept... But I don't really want to eat syrup with pork unless it's bacon. With that said the goat burger was pretty good. Well cooked. Good flavors.
I was pretty underwhelmed by this place to say the least. We were given paper menus with food stains on them. We ordered two entrees with no drinks and the total was $50; a price that I’d expect for a nicer sit-down restaurant. But as I looked at the menu items, a lot of it was just cheap beans, rice, and tacos. I thought that because of the high prices, the portions would be a lot larger. I ordered a Navajo taco with green sauce pork, and my boyfriend got a red sauce chimichanga. The flavors were extremely mild and underwhelming, and my Navajo taco was pretty small. We got a soupy side of beans that tasted like the beans my dad used to make out of a pressure cooker (I’m white.) We also got some overcooked rice that resembled cilantro lime rice but not really. Don Joaquin’s has a better taste with similar menu items, WAY larger portions, and much cheaper pricing. If this place were cheaper, i’m sure I’d be less critical, but I just found the pricing to be exorbitant for what we got. Also, I’ve had a stomach ache from it all day. PROS: waitress was super fast and friendly; always checked in on us and got our food to us fast.
We had such a great experience here 4 months ago that we brought the entire family tonight. Oh my goodness what a tale of two resultants because tonight was subpar to horrible. Our first indication was the sad hostess in the tall boots who upon our request to be seated at another table because our party of five felt cramped just said, "no, the other tables are for other guests." (The restaurant was empty) No I'm so sorry, Let me see what I can do - just "no" and she walked away. Our server was decent, and kind, and understanding, but seemed to give us hints that all was not well at The Black Sheep tonight and seemed frustrated because of it. We ordered the Hog Jowl Nachos. Hanger Steaks, Navajo Tacos, Enchiladas, and Chicken. The Nachos were soupy, and flavored okay, but nothing like we had in September. The rest went down hill from there. The server came back after we made our orders and said they were out of the Bison meatloaf (at five o'clock on a Saturday night). The beans in both the Navajo tacos and enchiladas had absolutely no seasoning. The Hanger steak was supposed to have a cabernet glaze and last time it was spectacular, but tonight it tasted like overly sweet jelly. We tried both the fry bread and lavender bread and both came out, along with every other dish, lukewarm. The entire experience was a major disappointment. We expect much more from a long established restaurant and will not be returning any time soon. Sad too because our first experience below was spectacular. We came here for our 26th wedding anniversary. And my goodness what a correct choice that was. The food was amazing! We shared the Pork Jowl Nachos as an appetizer, (large enough for a meal by itself). I had the Hanger Steak, and my wife had the BBQ Bacon Buffalo Burger with Sweet Potato fries. The entire meal was amazing. The steak was cooked to perfection as were the carrots and real sweet potatoes (not yams). The asparagus was grilled perfection, and those cheesy potatoes! And the Cabernet glaze that brought it all together! Oh my goodness I will dream of that dish for a long time. Every dish popped with flavor. We are foodie and restaurant snobs. And this place just went into our favorite restaurant rotation.
This is probably a nice place to take a date, but the premium prices did not reflect a premium quality or quantity of food in my opinion, especially in comparison to some of the other restaurants in downtown Provo. The lack of AC in the building made the dining experience a bit uncomfortable, and the food wasn’t exceptionally exciting for me. The menu promises a lot of very interesting options, but the actual flavors felt a bit bland. The Navajo taco, which is one of their specialties, was quite doughy and left me feeling both hungry and disappointed.
The steak tacos and drinks were way too sweet. The little bits of steak in the tacos were drenched in very sweet balsamic reduction, making it difficult to taste the actual flavor. We also ordered the grapefruit Paloma thinking this specific drink would not be sweet. But alas, it was also super sweet. As far as the service, the waitress acted impatient and as a result, we felt rushed.
