Exceptional experience! They focus on locally sourced fish and really take it to the next level. The food was delicious, the presentation spotless, and the service excellent as well. Wide selection of sakes, some wines, no cocktails. The location is quite remote, but the “in the middle of nowhere” setting makes it unforgettable. Definitely recommended for a special occasion. You definitely need to come by come car/be accommodated there or have a pick up organised (2 hours service). (The fried tempura in a cold broth was a bit of a miss for me, as you lose the crunchy texture when it’s placed in liquid — but that was a minor flaw.)

We had a wonderful experience as well as the outstanding food and service. Beautiful local ingredients artfully presented and beyond delicious. The chef was very sociable and gave us recommendations for our coming trip to Japan. We appreciated his attentiveness and mastery of his kitchen. We would absolutely return. His staff was warm, provided great service and made us feel welcome. Thankyou!!

ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT! The food is delicious, the service is great (up to the point where they make sure to alter the menu if told before hand), and the atmosphere is great! If you come to the area, you cannot miss this culinary experience.

Memorable! Nestled between the Hotel Terrestre and the Meridiano Gallery, this Japanese omakase restaurant boasts a unique counter seating just eight diners. Chef Keisuke Barrada’s menu features eight exquisite dishes and pairings, meticulously crafted from scratch by a well-choreographed team of seven using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. The building’s design is a testament to its architectural prowess. Renowned Mexican architect Alberto Kalach crafted this small, open-air palapa without doors or windows. The interior seamlessly integrates traditional palm thatched roofs with wood treated using the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique, creating a visually stunning ambiance. The upper floor houses a single omakase bar, dividing the room into a kitchen and dining area. The lower floor serves as the bathroom. Daily, they offer three seatings, with each meal and pairing priced at approximately $150 per person. While it may not be an affordable option, it’s an experience worth cherishing. If you find yourself in the area, don’t miss out on this culinary gem; you won’t regret it.

I had a great experience, all you expect from a quality omakase + the unique atmosphere make this restaurant kind of magical. 🧙 I meet great people the conversation were also delightful the wine selection is amazing.

Such a cool omakase experience in a unique place. I got nervous after seeing the star review so wanted to help anyone debating going. This is a great dinner option if you are staying on this street of hotels specifically 1. Extremely easy to get to if you are staying on this strip of hotels. If you are staying in puerto Escondido I would ENSURE you leave earlier than you think, it’s a bumpy road. Ideal to pair Casa Wabi with it beforehand. 2. The chef isnt the most chatty…get over it?!? Service was fine, English translation available. We didn’t do the pairing so we ordered drinks a la carte and it was easy. 3. You have to prepay and be on time…once again, leave early if you aren’t staying in this specific area. 4. Comparing it to an omakase meal you’d get in another major city is unfair. This is such a cool experience in a beach hut in a place surrounded by great local seafood.

Excellent experience on a 10 course menu with a very interesting alcohol pairing, the Chef,Keisuke Harada and the team went above and beyond to cater an incredibly fresh & innovative menu based on what’s local(seafood & fish). The lady orchestrating the beverage pairing, besides the beautiful smile, had amazing matches to each of Chef Keisuke’s dish, including sake,Mexican wines and some bubbles. Overall,do book the whole experience as I can sign you won’t find a better, exclusive dining option in Puerto if you are looking for Japanese cuisine. Bonus:The staff is fluent in English, joyful and ready to share some experiences with you. Kudos!

I visited Kakurega Omakase last October. Didn’t know I could write a review being this magical spot in such a remote place. But here I go. This is one of those really special culinary experiences worth sharing. If visiting Puerto Escondido, this place is a MUST! Enjoying the sunset while watching the owner and staff create incredibly delicate and exquisite dishes is quite spectacular. The setting is poetry itself. The simple yet sophisticated atmosphere will captivate you from the moment you start climbing the stairs to the main area. You will agree this place exceeds any expectations. Thank you Yellow Monkey, will definitely visit again when in Oaxaca! 😉💯

Amazing experience at Kakurega, every time we go is better than the last time. They blend Japanese cuisine with Mexican ingredients and create an exquisite culinary fusion. The atmosphere is very cool, we always end having drinks with other customers and meeting wonderful people.

We love adventuring in food! The restaurant itself is unique and a lovely elevated open air concept with large beams, traditional japanese stone footings and thatched roof. Its really cool if you're into architecture. Eight of us had a delicious dining experience. Each bite was like tiny explosions of flavors in your mouth. They source as much in season local ingredients as possible. Chef creates the unique 8 course menu. Each dish arrives at the same time for each quest on beatiful raku dishes hand made in Oaxaca. The drive through farm land, along the large lagoon was a nice sight. We drove down a fairly long flat dirt road, a gated community of exclusive hotels and homes nestled into a natural terrain along the beach. Staff were friendly and greeted us kindly and on top of their game. Sushi Master was friendly and spoke with us quite a bit. We asked alot of questions about everything. Open air means YOU must be prepared for the elements, including an occasional bug. The reservation was a small challenge but we were persistent and managed. It was worth every penny and every bite. If you're looking for a typical sushi restaurant then this isn't your place. Viva!

The best experience ! Had an amazing dinner there, the food and the team are absolutely divine. It brings something exciting to the area in the finest mix between Japan and Mexico. I definitely recommend this Omakase, I loved it so much that I went twice.

Very enjoyable meal in amazing setting. Real deal sushi master from Kyoto using local ingredients. A nice community atmosphere and you have the opportunity to chat with other guests when the alcohol starts flowing if you so choose. Would not a miss a meal here if you are in the area.

We had an unforgettable experience at Kakurega Omakase in Puerto Escondido. 12-seat bar setting made the evening feel intimate but not awkward. The staff was exceptional—attentive, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming with exceptional taste in music. If you are looking for a Japanese tasting menu with only local sea food, Kakurega Omakase is a must-try.

The food was excellent,Yeye gave detailed explanations of the food and drink combinations and the music Playlist set the vibe.

The setting is excellent and the staff is, for such an experience, refreshingly laid back. Chef Keisuke wasn't with us that night, but his menu was more inventive than your typical omakase and embraced local ingredients like a local sea snail in garlic sauce, which was a highlight. The drink menu centered on Japanese sake and European wine, but had a sprinkling of Mexican beer (monopolio IPA, Boemia) and at least one Mexican wine as well. Full disclosure: I was staying nearby and was a guest of the restaurant (normally i couldn't afford such a meal) so others might have gripes about cost/value or the distance required to get there, but I did come away sated, satisfied by the social nature of the meal thanks to the attentive, good-humored staff, and impressed by the overall quality and diversity of the omakase, and again, the setting is certainly memorable, making this with a visit for a special occasion.

Such a cool omakase experience. Not sure why there are negative reviews it’s very clear you have to make a reservation ahead of time and pay ahead — it’s expensive, but it’s an experience!! Service was great and they were also so nice and very accommodating. I would definitely recommend :)

M

This is a totally unique 14 cover high-spec dining destination in a remote location. The experience is delivered with care and attention to detail. Staff are warm and helpful. What the one-star reviewers seem to mostly be complaining about is spelled out clearly in the reservation process. Once the meal gets underway, the team of about 6 are completely focused on preparing and serving the meal, tending to drinks etc. If you can manage to arrive on time, don’t miss it! If you’re gonna be late, don’t book it :)

B
Brittany Ugolini

Don’t believe the reviews you see here. I just celebrated my birthday at Kakurega Omakase and had an amazing experience. The chef and all the staff are so friendly, so attentive and so talented at what they do. Most of the negative reviews here didn’t understand the assignment… the restaurant is clear about their ground rules. 1. Arrive on time. They do this because they have 3 seatings and if one group is late, the entire time slot would need to wait which would then put all the seatings behind and disrupt the other guests experience. 2. Cell phone service is limited at the restaurant, so if you call to give a heads up they won’t receive it. 3. Diet restrictions cannot be accommodated day of because the menu is set. If you have a dietary restriction, tell them beforehand. 4. This is a fine dining experience on the beach. It’s a chill atmosphere, but obviously heavy on the wallet. If a 10 course set menu is not your vibe, don’t choose this restaurant. If you are cool with these ground rules, you will have an amazing experience just like I did.

We had a really special meal tonight at Kakurega Omakase led by Japanese chef Keisuke Harada from Kyoto and his team. The menu was a delight of fresh fish, molusc and seafood sourced locally and prepared in super interesting ways that blended Oaxacan and Japanese cuisine. For anyone visiting Puerto Escondido - a must! Especially if staying at the hotels nearby, it's the best dining experience in the area for sure - aided by the beautiful setting! Gracias to Jeje, (forgive our spelling if it is wrong), who led the service - she was super engaged, welcoming and translated everything for us into English! We will be back 🙏🏼🤍

We had a fantastic night here! We were so welcomed from the moment we walked in the door and it was a truly unique experience. Chef keisuke is a master and takes you on a journey of culinary delight with every dish somehow topping the next. It is worth every cent for such a unique and heart felt experience. Cannot recommend this place enough. Make sure you prepay and make a reservation in advance with Escondido hotel. Enjoy!

We had an amazing meal at Kakurega and enjoyed the full meal with drink pairings. The food and drink were fantastic. The chef and cooks were very kind and knowledgeable about each dish and drink. The room and setting is very beautiful, would love to dine with them again.

Fantastic meal. I’ve been lucky enough to eat at incredible restaurants around the world, and I have no clue why this place doesn’t have a better rating, especially considering the context of an omakase in a remote area of Mexico. We did the drink pairing, and every bite and sip was wonderful. The sashimi was crazy good. Service was friendly, atmosphere was beautiful. Love that every dish is from local fish.

Literally one of the best dinners of my whole life. As a starting point, you are in Casa Wabi's atmosphere, that mixes a ripped mexican vibe with the japanese simplicity and distinction. The architecture is extremely simple helping you to get into the vibe of enjoying your senses. Once sitting on the long bar, in front of the kitchen, a personal waiter will be cooking in front of you and preparing every course guided by the chef. I went with a group, however got immersed in the process and sophisticated preparation of each course and hardly participated in the conversation. Best quality of food, simplicity at its best of refinement on the less pretentious and relaxed environment in the world. Had that magical experience nearly 2 years ago and still remember the magic of that place. Hardly Recommend you to go if you are looking for something beyond special.

Wonderful and unexpected experience. All sourced locally which was a pleasant surprise and a true departure from the typical (and also wonderful) cuisine available. Well done and worth a stop to enjoy something different and delicious.

Standouts: mushroom sea snail situation, fried shrimp rice cake taco tostada, fried pork belly, and cold udon noodles with tempura veggies. Great location, great sake. Negatives. Wish the sushi chef came over to say hi - there were four of us at the bar in total.; can’t imagine a simple introduction and a question on how it’s going would hurt? For the price of this meal and the same in nyc for omakase, it seems reasonable. The staff was phenomenal but for a total of four people at the bar, you’d hope for at least an introduction and a question - he was clearly bothered the four of us made the reservation on a quiet night… he did have cool cargo shorts on though. Maybe just got off a surf a few min prior? I was hoping that by the end of the night, the cargo pockets were where the service from him, personally, was hiding. He sadly left without as much as a nod. He’s as much as of an omakase chef as Aoki was a Japanese chef when he opened Benihana.

Overall enjoyable omakase experience. I looked at prior reviews and could understand where folks were coming from but seems the restaurant has taken that feedback for anyone dissuaded by 3 stars. They were perhaps not so friendly at beginning but seemed to open up into the service so recommendation is to be more welcoming at outset and not so tense. Of 10 dishes …a few were 5 stars, a few 3.5 stars …majority 4 star. Could perhaps offer drinks to those who chose not to go with pairings. I had to ask for a drink well into the service.

J

Very worth the cost and very filling (10 small courses). The dishes ranged from phenomenal to mediocre, sometimes exceeding expectations, other times disappointing expectations. Atmosphere is fantastic and staff is incredible. The open air bar style and open kitchen concept creates a very intimate experience between the guest and the staff. Just an amazing experience, but wish all of the dishes would match the vibe.

I read all the bad reviews and almost cancelled dinner. After our family experience, I am glad I didn’t cancel. Anyone who eats raw seafood takes some risks. The staff were very kind and friendly, particularly to our 7 year old son. The food was good, but I am not an expert. A guest turned up 30 minutes late without any fuss. There is a beautiful little building adjacent the restaurant worth experiencing. Overall a great experience for our family.

Food was fantastic. Drinks were really nice. Loved the saké, however would have loved to have see more locally produced, preferably low intervention/ natural local wine. Setting was very unique. Service was great. Only piece of major feedback would be to improve the music. My partner and I were shocked to hear such a seemingly unthought through, basic, and random playlist whilst eating such a beautifully curated, elevated menu in such an elegant setting. For us it really cheapened the whole evening and felt totally dissonant and incongruous with this outstanding culinary experience in the middle of a stunning remote location.

J
Joanna Andersson

So cool to find an elevated Japanese dining experience on this secluded beach. My husband and I had the 8 course tasting menu with drink pairings and it was amazing! Definitely recommend! All local fish was used for the dishes and it was a great combo of hot and cold.

S
Scott Linttell

It was a very cool experience and nice atmosphere. Food was disappointing especially since you’re paying so much money for a night out. In our group of 12, 4 to 5 of us ended up with E. coli infection. Personally, I have extremely strong resistance to any of this and have eaten Mexican street meat from one end of the country to the other without a problem. One trip to Omakase and Eight days of the worst stomach and exploding ass I’ve ever had. Disappointing to say the least at 150 USD per plate. Overall, the food was creative and there were some good bites, however, really lacking on flavour and quality. You can do better Omakase. Be more careful with your food preparation.

I’m genuinely disappointed, because this place has so much potential. Pros: The food was excellent — creative, well executed, and clearly made with care. The chef was kind and approachable, which made the experience feel personal and special at first. However, the issue: I paid in advance for a food and drinks pairing. During the dinner, the waiter informed us that we would need to pay extra for all drinks, which was confusing and unexpected, as the pairing was already paid for. We also ordered a bottle of wine, and after the dinner, they attempted to charge an additional extra again, on top of everything already paid. After raising the issue, we did receive an apology, but no refund for the overpaid pairing was ever provided. For a restaurant that positions itself as a refined dining experience, this kind of billing confusion and lack of resolution seriously damages trust. Transparency and honoring what the guest has already paid for is essential — especially at this level. Great food and a nice chef, but unfortunately overshadowed by poor handling of payments and follow-up. I hope management addresses this, because it could otherwise be a truly great place.

M
Matt Goodman

Second time there (1st was Dec 2020). Extremely expensive for subpar cooking and below average food (conch overcooked to the point of being rubber bands… tempura veg served in a broth so the tempura becomes soggy prior to eating...). They even served a dish in aluminum foil like a tv dinner. The pairing was similarly disappointing — it included every day beer such as Asahi and Sapporo. The experience starts promptly at the reservation time — they don’t allow guests any extra time to arrive prior to starting. We arrived for the 21h seating at 21:04 and they were already serving the first course.

Unless you are staying at hotel escondido and willing to pay and arm and a leg for ok japanese food, do it! Too many fried food. Service took forever to serce beer and wine

P

Terrible experience. In a set up like this, 12 people in front of the chef and his team, you should greet and engage with the customers. Tell them about the dishes you will serve, the experience, etc…instead the restaurant operates like a McDonald’s, you sit, you eat and then please leave fast as the next group is coming. Food is average at best, nothing remarkable Music/ atmosphere - makes no sense, you are sitting in a palapa like setting in front of a Japanese chef listening to 90s grunge music followed by daft punk? Finally, we wanted to order a bottle of white wine, but they didn’t have any, not a single bottle and there was still a group after us to have dinner In general there is no real focus on the customer or the details to make this a remarkable experience. Feels more sitting in front of an assembly line of a tractor factory Don’t make the same mistake we did, just have dinner at any of the other hotels in the areas where the food is significantly better and the staff is actually really nice and knowledgeable

Made a reservation by accident because I didnt understand page, cancelled 1 minute after realizing error. They told me they will not reimburse me $300 I didnt mean to pay even though I contacted them immediately. Didnt realize this business was a scam

Everything about this dinner was a mess. The food was dull and heavy, the most memorable part being the styrofoam we found in the ice cream. The service was rushed, dishes coming before we finished the previous ones. The music selection (in as far as it can be considered a selection) was out of place and played so loud, the staff had to turn it down to speak. The chef didn’t greet guests, reprimanded his staff for eating and took off before we even got the check. The days after were even worse, with a food poisoning that took two days off our trip. An omakase is the promise of a thoughtful and refined experience. This dinner, however, was a sloppy disappointment. Do yourself a favor: avoid this place.

Do not be fooled into going to this incredibly stupid, unsafe restaurant. They are in no way prepared to function as a proper establishment. They have no plan for heat and bugs, much less an emergency. They will not make any accommodation for food restrictions despite being informed in advance and confirming they would. A member of our party fainted from the intense heat. She was fine but the staff made zero effort to help, accommodate, or show even the most basic level of concern. Yet we were of course still expected to pay in full for the meal we could not finish. The restaurant is located a couple miles down an ungraded dirt road that has surely snapped a number of axles and will damage your vehicle. Just getting there is utterly miserable. Most importantly, personal anecdotes aside, they are not prepared for any kind of emergency, health or otherwise. A combination of unpreparedness, incompetence, disregard and an incredibly stupid location makes this an absolute zero and completely unsafe destination. There are so many wonderful experiences to be had in Puerto. Don't waste your time on this expensive joke. Truly an all-time worst.

Our entire group was disappointed by the food. Flavors do not seem to have been thought out. We expected way better at this price point. Hopefully they can improve the menu and preparation. Staff is friendly and welcoming.

Went there on a day trip with the bike just to explore the area. All very private and not much you can see or do without staying in one of the places. Decided to at least sit down in the restaurant for a drink..it was just the 2 of us in there. We ordered these non alcoholic fancy juices/mocktails that on the menu were $120 each. Didn't taste amazing or anything and when we got the bill, it was $400 total. The explanation we got from the guy serving us was a bit unclear. He was talking something about the paper menu not being updated and the new price in the system being $200 and that they ran out of paper for the menu and the receipt machine? I mean, they could have told us before. When I tried to pay with card he repeated that it's the same paper issue.. I would not buy a small juice if I knew it was 10USD. Wish I would have stood up and left without paying..ridiculous

A
Alejandra Ruiz

Before making a reservation read this! Even if you make the reservation way in advance and pay the FULL (overpriced rate) amount for your entire party they do not respect your reservation and change it with very little notice to their pleasing and not accommodating at all to your availability and travel plans. Then will not give you your money back and leave it for credit, so your are forced to go even if their new reservation date doesn’t work for you. The food is fine but overpriced and caused food poisoning to 3 people from our party. Certainly not going back and would suggest you skip it as well.
