No.1 Chinese Restaurant has exceptional food and exceptional service! The dining room is not that big, but they do have a few booths and a few tables in the middle (which they have re-arranged to accommodate a group of 8 to10 of us on more than one occasion.) They have top notch service, and you tell that they actually care about serving their customers. They have some of the best Chinese food I have ever had! Hands down the best in this area! I have tried several menu items, and every single one has been fresh and delicious! Just found out last night that they will make General Tsao's Shrimp (even though it is not a menu item). The owner (or who I assume to be the owner) has been awesome every time we have dined in, and they have gone above and beyond to accommodate us, including special order requests. Their food is not greasy like a lot of other Chinese food restaurants - everything is fresh, and the sauces are flavorful! I would highly recommend No.1 Chinese Restaurant! It is the only place I will order Chinese food from; if you are in or around Reading PA, they are definitely worth an extra few minute drive!
Outstanding service! food was delicious, fresh, sauced perfectly. Can’t wait to come back to try more dishes
The food is the best I've had with take out places.
We’ve been coming here for years. The owner is amazing, the food is constantly wonderful! Love the sweet & sour chicken, pork fried rice, and egg roll!
I've been going here for 20+ years and their food never disappoints. Everything on the menu is delightful, and the quality of ingredients is top tier. I'd recommend the chicken and broccoli and dragon phoenix.
Once again No.1 has the BEST Singapore mei fun noodles. Also, we ordered Mongolian beef with extra heat and it was excellent! However, we also ordered the coconut chicken and while it wasn't terrible, it wasn't anything like we were expecting. The chicken tender was very dry. I feel the description could be a bit more descriptive, something more like "sliced chicken tenders with a half slice piece of pineapple and a piece of lime in the box" but you live and learn. No worries, we'll be back.
My new favorite Chinese restaurant. Fresh, delicious, clean, friendly, personable and they made it the way I wanted it. This place checks all of the boxes. I don't live close but will definitely take the time to visit again.
Absolutely the best Chinese food restaurant in the area! I grew up in the area and used to go here as a kid… Now I’m in my late 30s, live across town, & I make the drive just to eat here bc the quality of the food is unmatched! It’s not greasy, & I don’t feel bad about myself after I eat it. The service is great as well! I love to see smiling faces when I walk in. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for competitors in the area. This will forever be my favorite Chinese food Restaurant. Keep up the great work, and I promise you’ll continue living up to your name as NUMBER ONE!
This is the most delicious, hot, flavorful food. The portions are generous, the restaurant is very clean, and the service is consistently very courteous and professional. This restaurant is excellent! A Berks County treasure you must try!!
We enjoyed the food and relaxing dining in experience so much recently, we just happened to be drawn back today. Great people and small dining room still felt like a relaxing time to us. I really mean it when I say they are great people in this small restaurant. And dine in is awesome!!!! Thank you all at No.1 Chinese Restaurant ❤️
All I can say is this is the best Chinese food I've had in the state of Pennsylvania and Ive ate at Chinese spots from one end of the state to the other!! Their shrimp fried rice, heavenly. The fried chicken wings, divine. You can tell when you eat their food they put effort into it, not subpar ingredients like other places. Also the cleanest Chinese food restaurant Ive ever been to. Sure the prices are a little higher but you get what you pay for here. There was a point when I was eating here like 3 times a week a never once was sick, no stomach aches. If you want excellent Chinese food give this place a try, they have this good a rating for a reason!! I moved from the reading area around a year ago. Whenever I make the 3 hour drive back I make sure I stop here and get some wings, shrimp fried rice and some chicken broccoli. The Chinese spot in my new town is ok but it just doesn't stack up to these guys.
My friends and I decided to go on a girls’ weekend trip. We were scrolling through places to get a bite to eat we saw this place deciding to eat here. The staff is Super friendly, helpful, and accommodating! We’re from out of town. We ordered dumplings, General Tso’s combo, and the new Coconut Chicken combo. I have to say when we took our first bites we were mesmerized. We don’t have a chinese food place around where we live like this! 100/10! It’s 100% worth the drive to get food like this. Everything is made from scratch. The coconut chicken is by far now my top favorite chinese food. Amazing! We’re ordering take out when we go home for everyone to try!
It is very clean, laid out well, Plexiglass around the cashier and kitchen. The order filled quickly, person behind counter kind and helpful. The food is very good enough for me for 2 days. It was a shrimp and broccoli combo. Day 1 I ate only the shrimp. Today reheated the egg roll and it is still crispy. I will be back.
The food is slightly above average, and they charged extra for the hot oil condiment on the side, which is typically free.... At best - 3.5 stars.
Ordered 3 different entrees, all three were so sugary sweet- gross. Food seemed fresh, but the overload of sugar on everything, not to mention each of the three seemed like they had the same sauce on them. We won't be back.
Last evening, Christmas Eve was not a good showing for our favorite Chinese restaurant. I ordered on line at 5:35 pm and we never obtained our order until 6:55 pm. The on line order app said it would be ready by 6 pm so we showed up at 6 pm to find a line out the door, a mass of people inside waiting for food, and few people leaving with orders. When I finally reached the counter to pick up the order I was told they could not find it because there was a problem with on line orders and they would look for it. The owner came to talk with me and said he would have my order in 10 minutes. After waiting 40 minutes and no order I asked for the owner. I was not nice and told him I paid for the order on line and provided a great tip only to have no food after waiting an hour. The owner said he needed 15 more minutes he would the order ready. While I was waiting I talked with the owners son and daughter who told me the onslaught of people ordering Chinese food was unexpected. And, even though there were lots of people working in the kitchen they could not keep up. Several people waiting in line stated they called the restaurant for 40 messages and could not get through and finally ordered on line. Although No 1 Chinese Restaurant has the best food around, service last night was awful. Lesson learned, next time ordering on Christmas Eve, place the order at 3 pm and don’t pay on line.
Food is great. Price is the killer in my review. $15 for a quart of house rice. I can go to Eves Tai Kitchen in Shillington Farmers Market and get 1.5 Quarts Basil Rice and Chicken for $7.50. #1 has increased in price that economical a family cannot afford.
I used to eat here quite a bit and its just going down hill. The sweet and sour chicken was grease logged. The boneless ribs were over cooked and chewy (my dog even passed). The rice was lukewarm and gritty. My previous meal was just as bad but I thought maybe I caught a bad one but it seems to be the norm. Don't get me started on the egg roll. I took one bite and tossed it in the trash. Probably wont be going back EVER... For the price if I want Chinese food I'll go to the buffet in Lancaster...
I have never been here before, but decided to stop because two friends said how good they thought the food was here. Ordered bourbon chicken for takeout and three egg rolls. The rice was blah and the sauce on the chicken was a congealed liquid, like a gravy. Hardly anything else in the rice either except three pieces of broccoli, which was good, thankfully. The egg rolls were basic egg rolls, probably the ones most restaurants buy from the same place. Definitely never going there again!
*BEWARE* Half portions for full price (see pic)! Pros: - Tasted okay, just okay. - They do not use the fake, plastic-tasting, bright yellow rice everyone else uses. Cons: - The oil needs to be changed. - They serve you in a small, palm-sized bowl and charge you the full price. I paid 13.00 when I could have received double the portion and the egg roll for 10.00 max somewhere else. I will never eat here again. It is literally not worth it. Times are hard! Why am I done eating and still hungry? At other Chinese restaurants, I usually end up with enough food for leftovers. Not at this place! Do not bother.
Been eating here since they have been in business. My absolute favorite Chinese food. But My food was made incorrectly not once, but twice!! Owner didn’t care at all. Tried to argue about it being correct. Then realized it wasn’t. After my son received the incorrect thing the 2nd time after having to go back I asked for it to be made correctly and asked for a refund for inconvenience. He refused! Telling me they already had to make it twice and he couldn’t. That’s not my fault! He was sooooo unprofessional. Never experienced a business owner speaking to me that way. Will never return sadly. Check your order before leaving the restaurant everyone!
My parents and I have been coming here for years but haven't been back as often because our last experience was below par. We decided to give it another chance today. I ordered yellow curry chicken with brown rice and my father ordered chicken lo mein with pork fried rice. My yellow curry chicken was cold and old, so much so that it no longer had sauce because of t had become gelatin. The brown rice was severely undercooked, in-eatable. I asked to please exchange the rice and was brought white rice that was ok. The server was not pleasant at all. My father's lo mein was also cold and his rice had little to no ingredients, especially not pork. This was $40 and I could not eat, except for the egg roll. That was good. I feel bad because we love the owner. He has always been kind but unfortunately, kindness doesn't satisfy the belly 🤷🏼♀️
I don’t know why I keep trying this place when it routinely grossed me out. It’s close. That’s my excuse I guess, but no more. The fried rice is a weird yellow color, the egg rolls aren’t fresh, and any of the sauces-sweet and sour, coconut, etc all taste like they were just dumped out of a can. This last order was IT for me. My chicken pieces tonight were dry and had black spots in them. Needless to say I didn’t eat it, and I hope I’m not sick on the few bites I had. I’m not usually a harsh reviewer, but don’t charge me $13 for black chicken. I just can’t find any redeeming qualities to this place.
