We loved our stop at the Historic Diner. The food was great and reasonably priced. We had blueberry pancakes, mini waffles, eggs, and bacon between our group. The atmosphere is so nice & it’s great diner breakfast.
Small, quaint, and rustic are a few words that come to mind regarding this diner. Staff was great. The food was wonderful. Place was very small and confining. Bathroom was tiny. A person could wash their hands and dry them while on the toilet that's how close everything is in the bathroom.
Only had coffee, but it's an old diner and just feels right.. coffee was excellent.
We travel 45 mins all the time because we absolutely love this diner. The food never disappoints. It's always spectacular. Breakfast, lunch you name it. It is always great. They have a waitress named Melissa. She is amazing you can tell she has been with them for some time and just puts her all into the place. She's always making it such a nice environment to be in. ♥️
I came from United kingdom 🇬🇧 and I thought I pancake was fantastic. And service was good. Value for money.
The wait staff is always personable and makes you feel right at home. Whether you're rushing and need a quick to go meal/snack or you're catching up with a friend, they're aware of your needs and can get you on your way at your own speed. The food is always great!
Remember that this is a cash only diner. Not to worry, there is an ATM machine nextdoor. The food will make you forget about the inconvenience and the service is what you would expect from NYC's overpriced restaurants. However, here you get a welcoming attitude from the staff. Great food, great service, and you still have gas money to get home. And that's saying something!
The food, the service and the decor were lovely. I enjoyed the retro look and the history on the walls. I had the corn beef hash, which wasn't the best but good enough. The bacon and the waffles though. Yum.
As advertised! This is a diner, perfectly executed - clean, friendly, great food, and reasonably priced. I’m glad I was in the area. I’ve been here twice in a week and will happily stop by next time I’m in town.
I love Red Hook and this place definitely embodies the energy of the town itself. The servers are so friendly and the food is always amazing. Great prices as well. A nice casual place to eat lunch with family or friends. I always leave with a good mood.
Cozy little diner. Extra parking out back. Very friendly, accommodating waitresses. Food was excellent, much better than your average diner. Loved the fries. Not sure if it was always as this was my first time here, cash and check only...check, wow!
Amazing food and amazing staff. We travel a hour each way to enjoy this food about once or twice a month. Never had a bad meal.
My husband and I love this place!! We had the best home cooked St . Patrick's Day meal. Their food is alway delicious and the generous quantities left enough for a nice size for leftovers.
Great food. Fast friendly
Favorite place since I was a kid. Good food, good people, good vibe. They’ve given us many years of joy in this town. Prices are always fair and food is always excellent. I pray my small town stays small and comfortable to keep a place like this going!
Driving through the state and found this cute little place! It def has the old timey dinner feel and our waitress was great! The food was delicious and came faster than imagined! The waffles melt in your mouth!
I was there the third time and I always love it. Food is great and the service is fast and nice. The place had quite the history!
I've eaten here several times. Excellent food and service. Burgers are quite good and this morning I had a sausage, egg and cheese sandwich. It was probably the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Omelets are great too.
This diner is a staple of the community and the friendliness and pure community feeling shows. The staff knows everyone by first name; even as a stranger passing through I was greeted as if I were a longtime local. Food is very good, service good. It was jammed packed with people waiting, as the size this diner has not expanded much on its little lot, but it’s worth the wait.
Love this Diner, probably my favorite diner in the area because of its history. The food is fantastic too, and the atmosphere just screams history. It's a wonderful place for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
First time there. Staff was warm and attentive. We split a burger and fries. It was cooked exactly as we ordered it with good fat content for the flavor. The brewed ice tea tasted very fresh. We will go back to other items.
I’ve been coming here ever since I was a student at Bard (‘92-‘96). It has always been my favorite diner. The staff is wonderful and kind, the food comes out quick and truly overdelivers. I visit every time I’m in the area. Please don’t ever close!!!
Great place to eat. Fast and great service and everyone is so friendly. Great food. Asked to do a slightly modified meal and it was amazing. Use to order takeout so much from here, their burgers are great and breakfast can’t be beat. Sadly I’m leaving the area and have to leave a review.
Food was really good. I really really love that they make a mini waffle breakfast set so I can still have eggs and bacon and not feel too full. The waitress was so kind to my neice. The atmosphere of the train car is really fun and unique as well. Check it out!
This diner was a dream come true ! Excellent praiseworthy service. Extremely home atmosphere and the food is amazing ! Amazed at the desert selection in an enclosed glass hutch. And worth every dollar ! Very accompanying staff. Highly, Highly recommend this place !
I just had the most amazing experience at this diner. I could have never expected this. First of all, I’ve eaten here a couple times before. The food was always better than I would have expected, and the service was perfect. But, this time was way above and beyond. My wife just gave birth to my son today. I was exhausted physically and mentally. I had to go back to my house to drop off my daughter with her grandma. On the way back, I stopped at the dinner for a quick bite to eat. My diet is difficult to accommodate, and after no sleep, and the big event, i was having the strangest craving. I asked for two eggs, and bacon. No toast, or potatoes, and I asked for a hamburger patty, no bun, with mushrooms, onion, and swiss. The waitress was so sweet and accommodating. She recognized the bracelet from the birthing center and congratulated me. When I was ready to leave, she informed me that she was buying my meal. I just about started crying in the diner. I can’t express my gratitude. This meant so much to me. How unbelievably kind. I will be a customer there for life. I can’t wait to bring my family there for a meal, and introduce my son to this wonderful waitress.
Super friendly Liz in the evenings is always so very nice. She takes care of I'd say 14 tables Of 2 to 4 people each Like a violinist on a violin. The food is a 10 the prices are fair. Been their probably 30 times, never walked out without a good Feeling.
The food and service here is excellent. the atmosphere is a little tight but that may be because I'm a big and Tall guy. Love, their blueberry pancakes.
I've eaten at every diner in Dutchess County and beyond... by far, this diner (which is retro and absolutely adorable) had THE MOST flavorful, tender, perfectly cooked roast beef triple decker I've ever had. Not only was the beef perfection - the bacon was generous and also perfectly cooked. It even tasted great the next day (leftovers). Can see why it's stood the test of time!
The mini waffles rock and the hot chocolate is delicious!
I know people who grew up in here, lovely people in the only diner around town anymore...
Classic diner with excellent, friendly service. The waffles are especially good. My cup of coffee was never empty. Not much more to ask for! It’s cash only and they stops serving pancakes and French toast after noon – now you know!
I love this diner. I like the atmosphere: classic rail at diner. The food is good and the service is excellent! Be prepared: cash only and they are VERY popular. It is worth the wait (or sit at the counter)!
Amazing throwback diner in Red Hook. Had a delicious breakfast with very reasonable prices. Sat at the counter, enjoyed the service, and met a few very kind locals. I'd put this establishment on repeat.
Great diner. We go at least once a month. The biscuits and gravy are amazing 😍
We just stopped for coffee, but couldn't resist a muffin. I've never had a grilled muffin! Absolutely delicious. I wish we were here at dinner.
The Historic Village Diner in Red Hook, NY is a unique piece of history that you can experience a great meal at. The diner is a 1927 Silk City model. At the time of its manufacture the diners came prefabricated with cups, glasses, and silverware. On the side of the diner as you walk in you will notice the diner’s old name, the “Halfway Diner” because of its location halfway between Albany and NYC. The diner has a ton of historic and nostalgic value. The food here is great and the diner has a large dessert menu. It is possible to dine in or order take out. Portion sizes here are large. If you dine in you will love the ambience of this diner with its counter and booths. The service here is great! No place serves food and history better than this one.
Have been going there for years! Love the place. Prices are reasonable. The waitress are polite, cheerful and pleasant. Great place for breakfast.
Food was decent typical diner food. Service is also very good woth friendly staff willing to accommodate your requests. Prices are fair. Only issue is it's so crowded i couldn't even sit properly because my chair is up against the person's chair behind me. Squeezing so many tables into an expanded Airstream.
Huge variety of items on menu, friendly service, quaint old fashioned diner. Crispy fries come in little fry basket. Ultimate burger is actually chicken, excellent. Regular burgers, very good. Salad bar, fresh. Tuna melt, delicious. Cash only.
Good food, good service, cute little diner. Prices were OK and the way they give u a side of fries was great. Good for a quick bite when your hungry and want a sit down meal. Would go again if I was nearby and in the mood. The bathrooms are super small but that's not a big deal.
Busy time (Sunday late morning) meant a reasonable wait. The staff seemed like they were really out in the weeds, they didn't come to check on my table after we ordered quickly and the pretty reasonable orders (3 breakfast/lunch style plates nothing complicated or fancy) felt like they took longer than normal to come out but everything was hot which feels like a busy kitchen on a busy day. Goat cheese omelette was strong on the goat cheese weak on the omely. Coffee was bitter but made better with fixings. We tried to get them to make disco fries without telling them and it came out okay but nothing special compared to food in Jersey. Overall it was a very reasonable time but nothing super special.
Nice place. The waffles were pretty good. The fries were better than most diners. Burger was ok. But the sunny side up eggs were sketchy and the whites were a bit too runny. Egg whites cook through and harden by 145-149°F, bacteria die at 150°F, and egg yolks harden at 158°F. So cooked right the whites should be thoroughly cooked while the yolk is runny. My kid ended up with an upset stomach. Can't rate them horribly because with everything else they definitely made an effort, but I would advise people to watch those eggs.
Nice restaurant, we were pulling a 21' boat, so the large parking area out back was perfect. Food was good but our waitress was a little rude.
We had breakfast here and while there was nothing to complain about, the place just looked tired and worn out. Be warned that credit cards are not accepted at all. There was a wide variety of breakfast items on the menu. This diner has a very hometown flavor in that the waitress spends a lot of time with the regulars and somewhat ignores those she doesn't know.
Stopped in for brunch on a recent visit to Red Hook. If I were a resident I would be a regular here. I grew up in Queens, NYC with lots of big shiny beautiful diners. I never got to enjoy charming old railroad car, classic diners like this one. It seems like the kind of place where neighbors are likely to meet up, on purpose or by happenstance. We had a couple of omelets, which were good. Made in the American style - fluffy with the fillings mixed in. I prefer it to the French style - where the eggs are rolled over the fillings. Service was excellent, our coffee cups were never empty. It's cash only, which I guess is consistent with the vibe, but ... whatever. There's a cash machine at the Stewart's next door. Thanks for a lovely brunch.
First, just let me say that this diner has just about the best cherry pie I've ever had!! We pick up a whole pie every time we pass through town going between Maine and Florida. This time we stopped in for breakfast and I ordered the mini waffles, eggs, and bacon. The eggs and bacon were great but the waffles were doughy inside. They brought me a second order, which were crispy on the outside but still doughy inside. Moral to story: 1. avoid the mini waffles if you want crispy throughout and 2. definitely try the cherry pie.
Delicious and simple diner food done right. There aren't many restaurants in the area and when you find a restaurant you have to make sure you go in to grab seats fast. The historic village diner looks like your average diner on the outside but once you step inside and try the food, it puts other diners to shame. First of all the portion sizes are humongous, the way things should be. Second the food tastes great, we came in as a group of 13 and all of food was cooked perfectly. I ordered the Lock Horn special and it was delicious, the roast beef was piled so high I had to take 2 bites to get everything. Also I chose to pair it with sweet potato fries which came with the petal sauce, delicious stuff. This is a great place to eat after a day of kayaking/hiking/driving or just if you're passing by.
Had an amazing Silk City Special an enormous grilled sandwich of turkey, bacon, and cool lettuce and tomato. Wow. Service was sweet but not speedy. Meatloaf was tasteles and uninteresting, I blame the person who ordered it. We alsp received the check before being asked about dessert options.
Eating at diners is a cultural experience and nothing beats doing so at a Registry-recognized diner! Love the cozy atmosphere and retro decorations. Menu was visibly made with love and attention to detail. Wait staff was friendly and food was served promptly. Salmon tasted fresh, pumpkin pie was on point, and mulled cider was super yummy! A great experience overall. 😄
So my husband and I stopped at the Historic Village diner for breakfast on 9/10/2022. Upon entry into the diner we were great immediately be a young lady name Piper she was the host she let me know that she just needed to wipe down a table. I could see it was a very busy morning. I took our waitress a bit to come over. When our waitress came over it was very rushed. I order two eggs with corned beef hash and eggs and homefries the homefries have onions have onions. When I asked if I could have the homefries without onions the waitress basically said it would be to much trouble to do it without homefries. I found my waitress Barbara to be a little bit snooty. While sitting in the diner I found it to very clean and charming with a lot of history. When our food came Barbara placed our food on the table and ran. Not one time did our waitress come back to check on us and see how everything was. The food was amazing. While I was waiting for out food I noticed how hard the other memembers of the wait staff were working. Piper and Blythe are super stars they were on point. Blythe came by to see if we needed coffee. Not only did Blythe handle her own tables. But she also was running food out to Barbara tables as well. I am not sure if Barbara can handle being a waitress. Blythe and Piper and the rest of the staff are a 5 star. Barbara is the reason for a 4 star. Would I go back absolutely. The food was awesome. I want to thank Blythe for bring me and my husband more coffee. Remember have fun with what your doing and keep it real , because you know I do The Real Deal 12401
The Chili was way too spicy and I like spicy.
Closed at 2pm on a Tuesday? Change the name to historic bistro.
We just had 2 cheeseburgers and French fries and 2 sodas. The staff were pleasant, friendly . The dining car was clean and it had a nice nostalgic amatsphere. The dinner specials were put up around 4:30. Wish we knew before we ordered it would've been a better selection and cheaper. ..The total bill was $34.25..... you have to use CASH only. No credit/debit cards .
The staff is always nice and the place is very clean but the quality of most of the food just standard to “heh”. This past weekend we decided to go to eat there again but it was a big disappointment! The staff was friendly and efficient as always but the food was BAD! The only good thing about everything we ordered was the salad which was fresh and DELICIOUS . The fish had no flavor and the fried scallops were the WORST I’ve ever had in my life-totally tasteless, undercooked tiny scallops underneath the unseasoned fried batter! Even our baked potatoes tasted strange which we couldn’t understand how that was possible. In MY OPINION it’s interesting to go to because of the diner’s history and likeable owner/staff but quality of the food should be the priority.
Disappointing because we prefer vegetarian options, a different way to home fries are cooked, some almond or oat milk, and a few other things we get elsewhere that we couldn't get here. It's the second time we've tried the place and we're not going back.
I had given up ordering a feta cheese omelette because they were never well made. I ordered my favorite, a feta cheese omelette and it had the perfect amount of cheese. Best omelette I've had in years. The coffee was not the run of the mill coffee shop coffee. It tasted like a small batch coffee.
I have been to this diner many times over the years since 2007. Most recently, I went in October 2022. Sadly, the food was mediocre. But most egregiously, there was no ventilation whatsoever. No windows were open in this very tight and crowded space. I have two recommendations for this diner. Have whoever cooks your food actually TASTE what they have cooked... And open some windows!
I hadn't been here in years. The food was fine, not great then, so I thought ordering some diner staples might be ok. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. We ordered biscuits and gravy. Rather than a creamy and rich sausage flavor, the gravy was sour and left a tart aftertaste that lingered a long time. The shredded hash browns—a true diner staple—were bland, soggy, and undercooked. Ar's house hash was also disappointing. It tasted of ketchup yet was weirdly sour and bland. The diner is so cute and the staff was friendly and nice, but I really wish the food was better. I can't currently recommend it.
I really won’t recommend this place for anyone, not even a simple dish with fries they couldn’t get it right. I ordered a simple rose beef with fries and it was horrible. The waitress was really nice and very nice, but the quality of food is really poor.
We stopped for lunch. The food was terrible. My boyfriend ordered a well done cheeseburger and it came out medium. He hates any pink in his meat. I ordered hot roast beef and it was awful. Left a bad after taste.
My waitress was a very nice individual, however, the food was the most disgusting revolting food I’ve ever eaten in my life. Not to mention, the place is so dirty that you can wipe your finger on the wall in the bathroom and leave a dirt mark on your finger
Disappointed, drove to have dinner with family. Sign outside only takes cash!!! I’ve never seen this unless the internet was down which apparently was not the case!!
Went here based on all the reviews.... we had a terrible experience! We got there at 11:30am my husband, myself and 3 kids. You would think we walked in with a dozen people. We had to wait 20 minutes to be seated, it took another 10+ for the waitress to come over and take our drink order, another 10 to bring the drinks when she finally came to take our order she said they were no longer making pancakes or French toast, exactly what we were ordering! Apparently they stop at noon. Had they sat us in a timely manner or even took our order we would have had plenty of time! The worse part... the people that came in after but were seated first had pancakes! The food we ordered was nothing special, not even cooked well. They advertise bottomless coffee... my husband got one cup asked for a refill twice, never got one. The service was terrible, food mediocre at best. Oh and the highchair was disgusting! I was stuck holding my 9 month old the entire meal. I just don't know how they have such good reviews! Extremely disappointed, will not be going back!
Ordered a bacon egg and cheese salt pepper extra ketchup on a wrap as well as a sausage bacon and cheese on a bagel and ended up paying $21.79 which would have been ok if the wrap wasn't smaller than the bagel. To be honest the place is so crammed up n tight theres hardly any room to walk. I hate giving bad reviews but i just wasn't happy with this interaction or transaction.
We specifically chose to this place on our drive upstate bc the menu claimed the corned beef hash was house made. Well, it wasn't (tiny, even little potatoes cubes were clearly machine cut and the meat was thinned out). They flavor was AWFUL - I wouldn't feed that stuff to my dog. Truly disgusting. Inedible. Left it all and the waitress didn't even bother to ask me about it?? I guess she knew…
Food actually made bf very sick Staff is wonderful but nothing makes up for vomiting, dry heaving and diarrhea I refused to eat the food cause they brought out the most horrific looking potato skins I have ever seen (too horrified to have even taken a picture) The coffee is atrocious and thank god I didn’t eat the food or we would have two sick people driving home. This place should be condemned by the department of health for poor and dangerous food quality
Unfortunately this is the first and only time I’ve sent a meal back. I had such high hopes for this little diner! I ordered the roast beef, if i had known it was heated deli meat with a strangely tart gravy I never would have ordered it. I took one bite and could barely stomach it. I decided to order a burger instead which took almost half a hour to arrive. My MIL didn’t like her burger saying it had no flavor, we were informed they put not seasoning at all on the burger. So strange. I’ve never heard of someone not using salt and pepper at minimum. I took my burger to go since after sitting in a cramped corner for an hour and 20 minutes I was completely ready to go. The salad, roll, and fries were fantastic. This may have been a one off but since I’m only in town one day a year I won’t bother trying it again.
