Great place to eat and relax in an old school restaurant. There are signed photos and trophies from guests dating back the middle of the last century. The service is impeccable. The drinks are delicious. In an area where Mexican food is abundant and available in a variety of choices this restaurant is unique. They have stayed true to their Mexican American style. It reminds me of the 1970’s That’s a good thing. So if you are curious, go check it out. I am sure you will enjoy yourself.

A Hidden Gem Worth Finding: The Red Onion Restaurant in Rolling Hills As a self-professed reservation skeptic, I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at The Red Onion for our 6:45 booking. True to their word, within 30 seconds of checking in, we were comfortably seated in a cozy booth ready to explore their menu. The restaurant's warm, homey ambience immediately explained why so many local families make this their regular dining spot. The Red Onion has clearly built a loyal following through years of consistent quality and service, a testament to their enduring legacy in Rolling Hills. Their menu offers an impressive array of options, but the fajita combos are truly exceptional. The beef was remarkably tender and the chicken was perfectly seasoned, all served with traditional accompaniments that complemented the main stars beautifully. Each bite delivered authentic flavors that transported us straight to Mexico. I must also mention the soup, absolutely heavenly! Rich, flavorful, and clearly made with care, it set the perfect tone for what turned out to be an outstanding meal. The portions were so generous that we couldn't finish everything, which meant we got to enjoy The Red Onion's delicious offerings again the next day. Sometimes leftovers are the best surprise gift from a restaurant experience! It's no mystery why The Red Onion has become a neighborhood favorite. Between the efficient service, family-friendly atmosphere, and exceptional food, they've created the perfect formula for dining success. If you're in Rolling Hills and looking for a reliable, delicious meal that will please everyone in your group, The Red Onion deserves a spot at the top of your list. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I've lived in the south bay my whole life and for some reason just haven't made it here. It was delicious. Lovely, quiet atmosphere and the deep fried ice cream was the perfect thing to top off my meal. Love that they have vegetable options for your sides.

Very decent restaurant with a long history. Well vibes with nice services. Salads are always good choices. Bacon rolls are surprisingly good. Sometimes they are too busy and large group area might be too noisy at weekend.

Been here a couple times. The food is always fresh and delicious. The price is unbeatable in California. First time I had “two enchiladas” with Mexican potatoes and zucchini. It was a big plate loaded with yum fresh ingredients(took half home for midnight snack). Second time we did takeouts, fajitas for two is a feast. A thick layer of veggies, tons of chicken, super tender skirt steak and 6 big shrimps. Two sets of sides and sour cream+guacamole+copped tomatoes&onions. Even takeouts got a full bag of chip&salad.

Great selection of delicious Mexican cuisine at this historic local jewel. Make sure you read the restaurant's history on the first page of the menu. Although the beautifully appointed interior is not currently in use, the restaurant has set up a large shaded outdoor seating area to comply with COVID-19 countermeasures. We had a great selection of classics and all were fantastic. The rice and beans had perfect texture with crispy rice and creamy beans. The ground beef taco had a perfectly crispy fried shell, the carnitas platter was flavorful and delicious, the tamale perfectly combined tasty pork with just the right amount of cornmeal. For a smaller appetite, the street tacos (i had shrimp) were perfectly sized and combined just the right flavors with cilantro, pico, and two salsa types on the side.

My husband and I have been here multiple times and When my family comes to visit ,we bring them too. Last night we made 8:30 pm reservations to bring my sister for dinner . We had been raving about how friendly the staff is, that is long time family owned and told her about some other history of the restaurant . We were looking forward to having a special dinner with her .Our experience was unfortunately very disappointing. David was our waiter and as soon as he started talking to us, I remembered we had him as a waiter 3 times before . He seemed annoyed that we were there, and was not friendly or personable . We remembered this appears to be his norm / personality. It wasn’t just a bad night. We asked him questions about the menu and he was short , not informative and not professional. He never checked on us , We had to ask multiple other waiters for more water and drinks. Then after dinner he brought over the check and went to hand it to us . We asked for the dessert message , he said what do you want . We asked again for the menu and he named a few items. We asked again for the menu bec he didn’t mention what we wanted . He then was vague and so I said , so is the menu not up to date? he appeared to say yes and that they don’t have fried ice cream or many other items. He then says he will check and comes back out with the fried ice cream and then leaves us once again. My sister then asked what time does the restaurant close . It appears they closed at 9, so maybe David was rude , unfriendly and short with us because he wanted to go home? but why allow us to make 830 reservations if you close at 9. It was very unfortunate and even though they have the best guacamole…. we won’t be back anytime soon . And we definitely will ask to not have David as a waiter . A great old school neighborhood Mexican place with a lot of character. I had the chicken mole and did not expect a half chicken! It was delicious, the mole sauce coated everything just right. We also got the burrito combo and the size, a flavor, was impressive. Service was friendly; drinks were good and prices are more than fair.

It is very nicely decorated Mexican restaurant with many booths and tables and sports bar. I just tried their fish tacos and their tomato based soup. Both were definitely good. Tacos were quite large and filling. It was like half a burrito in weight. The salsa served with corn chips are very good as well. Slightly spicy. Parking is available on the street and in the rear.

I have consistently come to this restaurant with my family many times over the past year, each time be ready to wait for walk ins as there are many people who come. The service here is solid, nothing over the top, but it is adequately in getting what you need and want decently quick. The food here is nothing crazy, given most items don't use much ingredients, however those ingredient are very high quality. I got the chicken mole enchiladas in this picture, the enchiladas was literally just tortilla and chicken, with a solid mole sauce. Not that much to it, just straight up food. Overall I would recommended because what makes it stand out is the price. Everything at this restaurant is very reasonably price with dinners of 5 people able to be around or less then 100$.

The staff gets five stars for being friendly & welcoming but the food is terribly underwhelming, I’m sorry to say. I know this place is nostalgic to the older demographic of PV but the menu is below average & extremely overpriced. Nothing about the food seems fresh or seasoned. I think it would do them good to revamp & simply the menu. But to reiterate, the service is wonderful!

We live in the neighborhood and have been going to Red Onion for 20+ years but won’t be going back because it’s terribly managed now. The staff has always been robotic and the food was mediocre and overpriced but it was close and easy so we continued to go but it’s gone downhill from there. The wait times are horrendous and when they tell you 30 minutes, it’s an hour and then you have to wait 20 minutes for someone to come and take your order. The servers are rushing around and it feels like everyone is programmed. We won’t go back.
