Had a great experience with friends. Everything is good . But their brisket needs some more work . The waffle fries were very crispy and flavorful. I’m giving 5 stars because of their cordial , fast and friendly service. Shannon was the one who attended to us. Loved his vibrant energy.
5/29/24 Went in for lunch for my husband’s birthday. John was our server. We have been eating at Salt Lick for almost 40 years and John is THE BEST server we’ve ever had! He’s friendly, professional, very smart and an intuitive server. He frequently checked on us and immediately came back with refills of food and water. If you’re at this location, ask for John.😊 You won’t be disappointed! Yes, and the food was fabulous, as always! 😋 Without a doubt, the best barbecue in Austin! EVERY dish is freshly made and phenomenally DELICIOUS! We always order the “all you can eat” which includes; brisket, ribs, sausage, potato salad, coleslaw, fresh soft bread, pickles & onions. The barbecue sauce is on the table so you can add as much as you want. My favorite is the spicy version! You will not leave here hungry! They have incredibly great “pit bosses” who consistently serve up 100% perfectly cooked meats!!! EVERYthing is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS!
Some of the finest Texas BBQ you will find, everything is great here from the food the fixins, to the atmosphere, and the service. Once you try Texas bbq not much else in the country will compare. Also don’t skip the cobbler no matter how full you are, save it for breakfast the next day even!
It's still just as tasty as I remember 4 years ago!!! Turkey was moist. Beef brisket was so soft and smoky. Ribs were nice and tender and sweet tang. Pulled pork was nice and not mushy like some places. Next visit, I may have a cobbler first because I never have space after meal.
The Salt Lick - Round Rock --- ✅ Highlights - Famous for mouthwatering Texas-style BBQ. - Smoked meats are tender, juicy, and flavorful. - Classic sides like baked beans and potato salad complement well. - Rustic, casual atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. --- 👎 Considerations - Can get very crowded, especially on weekends—expect wait times. - Limited beverage options beyond basics. --- 🎯 Overall The Salt Lick is a must-visit for BBQ fans craving authentic Central Texas smoked meats in a laid-back setting. A true Texas BBQ experience! Rating: 4.5 / 5
Everything was very good or surprisingly good. The burnt ends were so flavorful and their sauce is like crack. Their sides are some of the best I’ve ever had. The sesame coleslaw and potato salad were amazing and I usually don’t like mustard in my potato salad but these were fantastic. I now have a new standard when it comes to sides. The blackberry cobbler with ice cream was so good. It wasn’t very sweet and the ice cream helped with the tartness of the berries.
My family enjoyed the outing to The Salt Lick in Round Rock. BBQ meal with a waiter, so it was a bit different than other cafeteria style BBQs. Menu is easy to read, prices are fair considering the Delicious food. Kids have their own menu to choose from. Atmosphere is great, staff is friendly, and there is even a small playground for the kiddos. Food offered ranges from Brisket, sausage, ribs, pulled pork, and chicken for the adults, to chicken tenders and corn dogs for kids. Plenty of sides too. We ordered meat by the half pound, and a sandwich.
We wanted to have an authentic, original yet delicious Texan BBQ meal, well we were took by this amazing place by our relatives and we couldn't be happier! You can tell how authentic it is by the smokey smell just by crossing the main door you're welcomed by hanging meats and a huge smoker. Needless to say, it was so tasty and portions were huge, willing to come back in the near time soon.
Everything was amazing from the drinks to the pie! I have diet restrictions and the server was kind enough to allow me to order from the small plate selection. The food was amazing! Perfectly smoked Turkey and ribs, my husband had the brisket that just melted in your mouth. Thank you for the wonderful meal!
This place is good. I have never been to Franklin's but I love this place. Always go here when I take an Austin trip. I like the ribs and brisket. Sausage is good but it's not my favorite. I do family style with the wife when we go. The sides are good. The brisket is very greasy and the sauce is mustard based (great for certain things not all, the sauce on the table is room temp and not good, ask for it warm)
Nestled in a rustic, welcoming setting, this restaurant delivers an authentic dining experience that satisfies every barbecue lover’s cravings. The moment you arrive, the aroma of slow-smoked meats wafts through the air, setting the tone for what’s to come. The brisket is the star of the show—perfectly tender with a smoky crust that melts in your mouth. The pork ribs are equally impressive, falling off the bone with just the right amount of seasoning. Their signature sausage has a delightful snap and flavor, and vegetarians aren’t left out, as they offer hearty sides like creamy mac and cheese, tangy coleslaw, and rich potato salad.
Fireplace, open seating , yummy Bread+ pickles. The food is delicious: Bison , beef & Pork ribs , flavorful Meats & spicy BBQ sauce 😋 I love theie Coleslaw, not mayo based ! The cobblers & pie are worth having you .
Salt Lick Barbecue never disappoints! The meat is perfectly smoked with that deep, rich flavor you can only get from true Texas BBQ. The brisket was tender and juicy with just the right amount of bark, the sausage had a great snap and seasoning, and the ribs were fall-off-the-bone good. The sides are just as impressive—classic barbecue beans, creamy potato salad, and crisp coleslaw that balance the richness of the meats perfectly. Portions are generous, and everything tastes fresh and homemade. What I love most is the authentic, no-frills Texas barbecue experience. Whether you’re grabbing a plate to go or sitting down with family and friends, Salt Lick makes you feel like you’re part of something special. If you’re anywhere near the area, it’s absolutely worth the trip. Come hungry!
So many options! Were suckers for good bbq and man did we choose the right place to start our anniversary shenanigans. We got there before the pop, as it’s right across the street from Kalahari -us going during spring break. When we left the line was almost out the door. There were so many options we tried to get everything. One thing I’d say is when we return, we will only be getting the meats and no sides. I’m a sides girl, but unfortunately none of ones we tried seemed special. They lacked seasoning and were bland. But… the meat!!!! Delicious. Everything from the brisket, to the ribs, and don’t forget the juicy, tender turkey. We also had pulled pork, and none of them disappointed. The ribs were fall off the bone and the bbq sauces complicated every piece of meat perfectly. Definitely recommend.
The food was awesome for lunch, our server was energetic and fun. I had brisket that was tender and delicious, and the pork ribs were fantastic. We also tried the sausage and enjoyed every bite. Our server kept us in bread and other stuff. Sorry I've forgotten her name but she should be recognized. I woukd absolutely cone again.
Pretty satisfied with my meal!! I liked that every barbecue place offers onions and pickles on the side it pairs good with the Smokey flavor of the meats… I started off with a big ole Texas sized sweet tea then I ordered Thurman's Choice which was a beef rib smoked sausage and brisket… I also added turkey!! Don’t judge me I wanted to try everything in there honestly… I didn’t really care to much for that type of coleslaw though never have been a fan of oil and vinegar coleslaw and I wasn’t really feeling the potatoes but I ate a fair share of them… then I had to order a slice of pecan pie!!! And omg!!! Dude was that stuff sooooooo good it was super warm paired with vanilla ice cream on top!!! The pecan pie honestly stole the show!!! Keep it up I shake return and If anyone in the Austin Texas area stop in and get a plate!!!
Solid replica to the original Salt Lick about 45/55 minutes away. This certainly located version had a little pipe burst issue on the day of our visit and was take out only. The brisket was wonderful had a good Texas bark, the sausage was delicious (not spicy), and the ribs had a great sweet bbq bite to them. The salt lick sauce is the special ingredient here. Two versions. Regular (which is normally a sweet taste) and Spicy.
Super fun place to go with the family. We were visiting the Kalahari and decided to go off the resort. We were all stuffed and had a great time. This place is very gluten-free and dairy free friendly. I did not feel sick after eating here. I love the brisket the grandmas didn’t want to get all you can eat so they got a senior plate. This is a great place to go to to get some Texas barbecue.
I reserved the private room for a dinner for 30 clients that were attending a conference at the Kalahari Resort across the street, and the events staff was amazing to work with (the private room holds about 45 people)! I got there super-early, just to make sure everything was set up correctly and to get my computer connected to the monitor. Everything was already put together, including the beers on ice and the wine already uncorked. Everyone felt very special, and the food was superb!… But as good as the food was, the service was even better. Jesse the server was amazing to work with: super-helpful, efficient, and he anticipated things very well. He was also easy to find when we needed something. Clive the bartender was also great helping 8 to 10 of our guests with drinks from the bar. I don't know when there will be another event like this in Round Rock that I get to host, but if it does happen in the future, I will reserve this place in a heartbeat. *There was plenty of wine left over, so I brought it home. I purchased two bottles each of the Salt Lake Cellars BBQ White & Red. My wife (the household wine connoisseur) says that they are both excellent.
We’ve loved the Salt Lick’s original location in Driftwood for years. This was our first time at the round rock location, and we were very impressed by both the food and staff. Our server, Jacob, noticed that we were staying in a nearby hotel (by our wristbands) and helped us refine our order so we wouldn’t have a ton of leftovers at the end of the meal. Everything he recommended was excellent! We loved the brisket, pork ribs, turkey (so juicy), sausage, baked beans and Mac and cheese! Our young son was following his older brother out to the playground outside but somehow chose the emergency exit door, which led him away from the restaurant toward the highway. When we went to check on him a minute later, we realized his mistake and were so relieved that Jaycie, another server, and Jesse, the manager, had intercepted him and kept him from harm. They were incredibly kind and we are so thankful for their awareness and quick thinking. We will continue to be customers for life after this great experience. Highly recommended!!!
We had the most delicious BBQ, but what was EVEN more amazing was the incredible friendly and fast service from iyanu!!! Give this man a raise and some praise! Thank you Iyanu for taking such great care of us and bringing the PICKLES!! It was a great first experience at The Salt Lick!
Absolutel must visit everytime I come to Austin and should be the same for others too because once you try this place they'll have you coming here as often as you can. This place has been my absolute favorite place to go to for briskets and ribs for over 6 years now. The service is great here too and the place is nice and kid friendly and has a small playground near the outside seating of the restaurant. This restaurants food is the best and it never disappoints, every time I come here I always already cant wait to come and visit again. I absolutely recommend this place to everyone. Ive recommended this place to so many people and brought so many of my friends and people that I know here and I told them how amazing this place is. I really hope they open many more locations and get more recognized because this restaurant is absolutely incredible.
Amazing BBQ!!! I've been waiting so long to come here & it didn't disappoint. The ribs were my favorite. I bought their special honey pecan bbq sauce & garlic rub to take home. The bartender made this delicious margarita. Do yourself a favor & stop by when you are in town. The staff was so nice & accommodating. They were busy but efficient. The food was hot, juicy & tasty. I had my leftovers for breakfast & everything was still good!
There’s no sign facing the road, we only knew it would be good cause we could smell it when we were stopped at the light. So far the best bbq I’ve had in the area, the Mac and cheese was good too. I usually don’t go crazy for sausage but this one was excellent, the brisket had a great bark that was perfectly salted I almost didn’t wanna add sauce. Worth $22 for the combo plate, big time!
This is the best place to get brisket BBQ. The smoky flavor is just perfect and not too too salty. The brisket is so tender and not dry. Adding onions and pickles really bring out its taste. In order not to wait in a long line, I pre-ordered my food in advance. preordered. I use the outside picnic table and enjoy the brisket. I highly recommend anyone to try at least one time if you travel to Austin area.
The bison ribs were fantastic, cooked to perfection. The beef ribs were excellent as well, but i prefer the bison. So so good. Everything thing else... sausage, brisket and sides...all delicious and excellent service too. Thanks again Salt Lick!
Great local place to get a nice barbecue before I flew out of town. This is got a lot of seating and if they're really busy eat at the bar the guy with the British accent who's the bartenders super cool who get you served and let you try all kinds of fun things. This is a great place if you're close to Round Rock and you need some great barbecue
We had not been to a Salt Lick in over 3 years since we moved to Georgia. We returned to Texas for our son's wedding, and found the Round Rock restaurant. As we remembered, the food, the people, and the atmosphere was amazing. The staff were even extremely kind to my husband's service dog, providing water for her. We will return again on our next visit.
Meat was awesome! Dint like the BBQ sauce much as it had more of mustard taste. I’m a fan of sweet BBQ sauces. Had a chance to taste brisket, Pork ribs & sausage and my favorite was beef brisket. So juicy and tender. There was live music and the patio seating was good. Definitely would visit again.
I've been to this location at least a dozen or more times, but never have i ever had the great experience i had over the weekend. The food at Salt Lick is delicious and worth it value in my opinion but our server JAXSON was the true star of my family's experience. He was very attentive but not overbearing, our drinks stayed full and he always kept a smile and made sure our order was perfect. My mother-inlaw came to visit from Pennsylvania and she was impressed with JAXSONS( we all know how hard mother-inlaws can be to impress lol). Not that I ever considered not coming back to eat here, but with prices of eating out becoming more expensive, its a added value to any experience when there's a JAXSON in building to welcome you in. Hopefully he sees this and is inspired to keep up his hard work. Great service+ great character+Salt Lick bbq = lasting relationships for all. Thanks and God bless....also those Burnt ends!!!!!🤤
How is this place not higher in the reviews!!! Get the all you can eat and feel like a king! I had to eat in a hurry but Olivia was amazing! She was like a friend walking my through what was best, friendly, and patient. I even ate alone and because of the weather change left accidentally my wallet in my range. She let me pay with my cc wallet and still treated me with so much respect. I can’t say enough good about her or the food!!!! Again if you come here I strongly suggest the all you can eat and if she is working Olivia will make you feel at home!
Salt Lick is one of my favorite BBQ restaurants in the Austin area. I love their fatty, moist, sliced brisket. I love their sweet potato fries. I love their bread. The restaurant is always busy on the weekends for lunch. The servers are always friendly. Some of the bartenders are great. The only issue I have with Salt Lick is they run out of moist brisket fast. I wish they would get rid of waffle fries and switch to regular fries.
After not eating here for a few years and having read several negative comments, my husband and I initially hesitated to visit for our anniversary lunch. However, we are so glad we decided to stop by! The food was fantastic! The brisket was tender and not dry, and my husband loved his ribs and the BBQ sauce. All the side dishes were fresh and delicious and surely not flavorless, as I had seen in some reviews. Our waitress, Sarah, was an absolute sweetheart! She was incredibly attentive and took good care of us and our allergies. She described the ingredients in detail, and we can't thank her enough, especially since my husband cannot eat sesame seeds. Who would have known that one can find it in the potato salad? Sarah, you are one in a million! We will most definitely be back! I failed to take a picture of my plate as I was talking too much and enjoying myself!
I’ve been trying to find GREAT BBQ places in TX and one of my friends recommended The Salt Lick at Round Rock! When I arrived, this atmosphere is amazing with GREAT staff, AMAZING food and sweet tea! I ordered the Thurman’s Choice which has ribs, sausage and brisket with three sides. The food actually has great flavor and portion for one person. I would 10/10 RECOMMEND trying this place out when looking for BBQ spots in Austin! 🤩 Also, Elicia is one of the best staff! She will make sure everything is done right!
This was our first time at Salt Lick, and it was amazing! We tried the all-you-can-eat Brisket, Sausage, Pork Ribs, Coleslaw, Beans, and Potato Salad, plus added Mac and Cheese (heavenly) and ½ lb of Turkey—everything was delicious! Huge shoutout to Melissa, our waitress on 10/5/25 around 6–7 PM. She was incredible—kept our plates and drinks full, made us laugh, and gave some of the best service we’ve had in a long time. She even brought extra sides for our leftovers so they’d taste just as good later. That kind of care really stood out and made the whole experience unforgettable. We’ll definitely be back!
My son requested Salt Lick for his 9th bday celebration with friends. I reserved a table for 20, they were able to let me set up a little bit early with a few decorations. Hostess and waitress were great with everything. We were even in the way a bit for pictures but all the staff was incredibly patient. Everyone had a blast and food was delicious.
This place is a must if you’re in the area! I’ve heard the rumors that Texas is the BBQ headquarters of the world and Salt Lick confirmed it’s factual! The food was astounding, the layout is open and inviting, wait time for food is non existent. But what made our experience top fricken tier was our server Jacob!!! This guy knows how to make it a three star michelin restaurant experience when it comes to service. He’s kind, engaging, and can tackle any question about the menu. He made it a special experience being my 1st time at Salt Lick and in TEXAS!!! Please give yourself the pleasure of being treated like royalty with Jacob!
I hosted a 50th Birthday party in Salt Lick Round Rock’s private room this weekend. The party for almost 50 people was an amazing success. Shane helped me months in advance getting everything set up for the private event. The day of the event Salt Lick was ready for us upon my arrival. The room looked great. Sarah single handedly took care of our entire group. The BBQ was the best, as I always think it is. Hardly any of my guests had ever dinned at the Salt Lick before and they throughly enjoyed the meal. Thank you Salt Lick Round Rock for making this private event so easy…especially since we were all from out of town.
I have been multiple times now. It’s an excellent experience. Texas barbecue is really one of the wonders of the world. I was a little surprised at how dry the brisket was but everything together was so satisfying. I literally almost ate myself sick. The sauce is a staple and a highlight. The spicy sauce was not spicy to me but it was delicious all the same.
Salt Lick has been our go-to spot for BBQ for over a year, and it never disappoints. The flavor, quality, and service have remained top-notch every single visit. A special shout-out to Jacob, who went above and beyond during our recent meal. He was kind, courteous, and thoughtful—suggesting mac and cheese as a side for our toddler, which turned out to be a hit. The portions are generous to say the least. With four of us sharing, we still had to work hard to finish the three meals we ordered. It’s the kind of hearty BBQ that leaves you satisfied and smiling. If you’re looking for the best BBQ with consistently great service, Salt Lick is the place. Highly recommended for families and groups alike!
Amazing BBQ place. We celebrated a birthday party here. The staff was accommodating and attentive to our party. Tye brisket was moist and we loved the homemade spicy bbq sauces. It’s a great place to dine with your family. Plenty of parking. Conveniently located near the Kalahari resort.
Excellent Food, but the best was our server MELISSA who was very friendly & one of the best we have ever had!\nKeep her!!!

Fun place for BBQ they got a little play ground for little kids to play in. If want to eat outside you have to get the food to go, there is no service on the outdoor patio. I love the sausage here, the brisket and everything was just ok. The side weren’t the greatest, wish they had more options for wide, not a fan of their potato salad. Drinks were really good there, easily got tipsy haha. But hands down the desert was delicious, the pie with the ice cream omg it is to die for.
I heard so many rave reviews about this place so since we were across the street we decided to check it out. We ordered family style which came with brisket, sausage, ribs, coleslaw, beans, potato salad. The meat was delicious, however the potato salad was disappointing and the beans weren’t anything special. I can’t comment on the coleslaw since I didn’t personally try it.
Trying out The Salt Lick when visiting Austin is a MUST. The original location in Driftwood is pretty remote and far away from the rest of Austin, whereas this location in Round Rock is much more accessible. It's not quite as big as the original location, but they serve all the same food. Normally when I go, we get the all-you-can-eat family style meal which costs $32.95/adult. It includes brisket, sausage, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and beans. Of these items, our faves are the sausage and the pork ribs. You have to use their SPICY bbq sauce when you eat the meats. It's one of my favorite bbq sauces of all time. It's a nice blend of tangy, sweet, and hot, and pairs well with ALL of their meats. As for the brisket, it's not my personal favorite as there is so much competition in the brisket space there in Austin. But definitely go for the sausage and pork ribs, and be sure to leave space for some pecan pie with vanilla ice cream on top for dessert. Absolutely delicious! Lots of parking at this location in Round Rock too. Be sure to take a bottle of their spicy bbq sauce home with you. I always take it back to California with me.
We went here to meet friends. On Google it lists this BBQ as $$ - $$$ and I would agree this is on the higher end. I ordered the Brisket and Bisen Ribs. Now I'm sure it said Brisket and Ribs but I received 3 strips of brisket and 1 rib. YEP one rib, so I'm not even sure what Bisen ribs taste like as it was not the fastest rib and at $29.95 a little pricey. Plate looks full with potatoe and coleslaw. Added a nice Korean larger though and some sweet potatoes fries. But taking all meals into consideration Food 3 Atmosphere 4 Price 3. More reviews on social media #realtysharpe
Im in Tx visiting family & this was my first stop! Ate here a few years ago, and I was craving BBQ. This pit stop was on way home from Austin airport. Love the simplicity and no fuss family style atmosphere. Lots of families & groups having late lunch. We ordered a few delicious items pictured below. Doused everything in homemade bbq sauces. Im used too sweeter beans & coleslaw.. Kinda wished I ordered cobbler to take back.
Update I visited this place again for dinner this time round. Ordered the pulled pork, pork ribs and the half chicken. While the food did arrive cold, the supervisor was happy to replace it immediately. The pork ribs were chewy, don’t think they are supposed to be chewy. The pulled pork and the chicken were nice. Insane barbecue! Everything was so good!! I particularly enjoyed the pork ribs and the barbecue chicken! Heaven!
A nice rustic atmosphere with good food. The service is good. This is more of a sit-down experience. I’m more accustomed to going to the pit or line and choosing. The servers are helpful in explaining the menu but it does make it difficult not knowing what you’re getting. Most Texas BBQ joints it’s more of an involved process picking what you want but here you’re picking plates and names. Just seeing the famous round pits is a treat. The food is good. The fusion created by the family history of the Salt Lick is represented in their flavors. Making them stand out and an experience all their own.
Ordered Thurman’s Choice (brisket, sausage, pork ribs) and the Pulled Pork Combo (pulled pork & turkey), which came with bread, coleslaw, potato salad, and baked beans. The brisket was perfectly cooked- tender, and flavorful. The sausage was a standout too, I highly recommended it. The ribs were fall off the bone tender! Pulled pork was solid and satisfying. The turkey, however, was a bit on the dry side. Sides were classic and complemented the meat well. Service was a bit off, staff kept approaching us mid-meal, which was a bit disruptive, but once we paid, they were nowhere to be found. Overall, great barbecue with a few service quirks. I would come back for the brisket and sausage alone.
This was our first time here and it didn’t disappoint at all. Our waiter Colton was amazing and friendly. Also the food was amazing and it came quickly. The only down fall was the sidewalk and the entrance to the restaurant is not wheelchair friendly. If yall couldn’t make less bumpy and smooth it out that would be great!
I like my brisket on the slightly moist and have a little fat on it for flavor and I asked for it. What I got was good but very lean and on the dry side, little disappointed. The beef ribs was much more moist and have some fat around the ends to give it flavor, it was very tasty. Don’t forget to order the Mac and cheese!! The restaurant was very festive and lively, fun for our families gathering.
4.1 Stars, First time here, good tasting BBQ, had the beef and bison ribs, they were very tasty. I liked the bison better, had a different taste that was pleasant. Sides were good also, the slaw was slightly different taste that was tasty, potato salad was also good and had a different flavor to it. Pecan pie was different also, they told me they use butter scotch as a base in the pie which gave it a different less sweet flavor that was addictive. Presentation of food was nothing like what they post on media. Instagram @foodieadventuresusa
We had a great time! The meat was delicious! The best turkey I have ever had. What be really made our whole night amazing was our waitress Melissa. She went above and beyond and made our first time at the Salt Lick a great one. I took off one star for the sides and cobbler. The sides were a little bland and nothing special. And the cobbler was mushy and gross. We will definitely be back for the meat and service!
Today was our first visit to the Round Rock location, and we enjoyed the meal there. We ordered beef ribs, pork ribs, sausages, coleslaw, and sweet potato fries. The beef ribs were coated in BBQ sauce, which was a bit unexpected and somewhat disappointing. I had expected the ribs to be simply smoked. The flavor was acceptable but not outstanding. The pork ribs were decent, with a pleasant smoky scent and just the right seasoning. The sweet potato fries were a delightful surprise, tasting great and served in a large portion. Our server was very attentive and friendly throughout our visit.

I was very disappointed with this location. I was excited to see that this location was close to my hotel. I even took a coworker because the Driftwood location was delicious. The meat selections we ordered were delicious, but the meat temperature was tepid at best. The sides aren't the best either. The beans were ok, but their potatoe salad was not good, very mustard heavy. The only hot thing was the waffle fries. Unfortunately, the pecan pie and peach cobbler were disappointing. Best thing of the meal was their seasonal beer. Probably won't be back to this location.
Upon entering the aroma is heavenly! Clean on the inside and outside. The service is good, a feeling of southern hospitality. The portion sizes of food will fill you up. However, the food has an acquired taste. I had a certain taste in mind when I comes to brisket and sausage.
Customer service from the gentleman at to go counter was amazing. I spent 100 bucks on 2 beef ribs, 1/2 chicken and 1/2 lb of ribs. It was extremely over sauced - dry and chewy at the same time. I expected more. The sides were good. Mac and cheese and fries- the Cole slaw is a no. I only gave the 3 stars because of the customer service. If the customer service matched the food I’d give 1 Star.
I've been hearing about Salt Lick BBQ since I moved to Texas 3 years ago. My 1st attempt failed (lack of planning on my part). This time I at least got in the door (@ the Round Rock location). Well, I was underwhelmed; nothing bad, but hype was so big about Salt Lick that I was expecting greatness. What I got was just plain ole GOOD BBQ. Nothing wrong with good food, but we drove from about 2 hours away for good. We have good in SA. The customer service is some of the best. I noticed the Manager serving food to customers and picking up finished plates as well. He came by our table and chatted with us twice. Food is served extremely promptly. The wait time for our food was 5 minutes at the most. We had the Chicken, Ribs, Pulled Pork, and Brisket Nachos. Nothing stands out as great or bad...just good. I would go back, but only when I am in the area again.
A nice friendly place to eat or hang out. We are from out of town and we were looking for some earth shattering bbq. This was not it. This bbq was average at best. Extremely overpriced for what you get. To pay $34 for 1 lb of brisket at a good place is normal, but to have that lb of brisket come out covered in sauce....wow I was not expecting that. If youre selling meat for $35/lb it should not need sauce. And if you have big bottles of sauce sitting on each table, why would you cover everything in the sauce?... Texas brisket is salt and pepper only. The pork ribs were good but at $8 per rib theres no way its worth it. I was looking forward to a 123 plate rib like ive had at other fine bbq spots, these beef ribs i got were covered in sauce and were tough...$150 for 3 adults and 3 little kids for lunch. We were told after that the original location at driftwood was better and it may be, but next time im in town ill just try another one of the 100 bbq joints around Austin. I will say this, the 2 bar areas were very nice and they did have a very impressive selection of bourbon. For a hangout it looks like a great spot and with the outdoor seating and playground it was very accomodating with kids.
The first Salt Lick I visited was the Driftwood location many, many years ago. This one was nothing like it. I got the combo plate with brisket and pork rib. The potato salad seemed more like hash browns. Barely tasted any seasoning and lots of fat on the brisket. I think I'll stick with Stiles in Cedar Park. The wait staff were exceptional.
We went today, 2-25-26, at about 1pm the place was empty, which is not a good sign. The meat was ok, a little salty for me. The cole slaw was tasteless, the beans were not very good, the bread was actually a roll instead of slices of bread, which was not a big deal just different. The bbq sauce was very strange, it didn't taste like bbq sauce so we didn't even use it. All in all we will not be going back.
The food was okay. We got there closer to closing time, but there were still a ton of people in there. I've been wanting to go to Salt Lick for years, but it just didn't quite live up to the hype. Food was just warm. Beans were alright. The sausage was the best part to me, honestly, and the BBQ sauce. I'll try it again one day during more normal hours.
Great service good atmosphere ok oak pit bbq. If your a tourist and wanting to feel TX BBQ, this place n terry blacks is good for you. If your lookin for great bbq its not. Food mass produced and served it to me luke warm, ugh. Waiter did replace my beef ribs and cold beans though! Couldn’t taste the oak smoke flavor , which is thee Best thing about oak pit bbq, fun spot but dry meat lacking my hometown flavor of Santa Maria. I grew up in oak pit restaurants, this wouldn’t make the list in central cal- but fun place to hit up with family n friends, id personally make the drive to county line for that though
I would not recommend the beef ribs whatsoever to anyone. They are way overcooked way over salted high price and you can barely eat them because it’s like eating a brick of salt Literally really disappointed I would only recommend the brisket and the pork ribs. Beef ribs are a complete waste of $30.
First time visiting this location. I ordered the brisket and turkey plate with beans, potato salad, and mac & cheese. Unfortunately, both the brisket and turkey were dry — I had to use plenty of sauce, which I normally don’t do when the BBQ is juicy and flavorful. The potato salad was bland and lacked flavor, and the beans were just okay. The mac & cheese was decent, but overall, the meal was disappointing. I was really expecting great BBQ. Maybe we just came on an off day, but based on this visit, it didn’t meet expectations.
We visited Salt Lick based on its reputation and our desire to support local businesses. The service was prompt, and the food was tasty, but it was barely warm. We arrived about 5:00, well before…

Good meats with rich smokey flavor. We had brisket, ribs, and sausage. Sudes (beans, coleslaw, and Getman potato salad) were not well seasoned and not very tasty.
The food was pretty good, especially the ribs and brisket, and we didn't have to wait long. The sides are okay (I liked their coleslaw bc it wasn't too sweet or wet). And the ambiance is nice. B…
We had a family dinner at The Salt Lick in Round Rock on Saturday evening, around 6:30 pm. The parking lot as you pull in from the street was crowded and it took us a few minutes to find a spot. After we parked and went inside, we realized that there’s also parking on the far side of the building that was mostly empty. Definitely go around to the far side parking lot! There was a waiting list, and we were offered a table outside on the patio with no waiting, but we elected to wait for a table inside. We waited about 15 minutes. The inside is a large open room with a variety of large and small picnic style tables. Our server, Emma, was awesome. Very friendly and attentive throughout our meal. Three of us ordered the Family Style meal ($32.95 per person) which includes all you can eat of brisket, sausage, pork ribs, potato salad, cole slaw, and beans. My wife got the brisket and pork rib plate, and our adult daughter got the salad with brisket. Our grandkids are both under 3, so they were able to eat for free with the Family Style meal. I had high hopes based on some of the 5-star reviews, but, sadly, we were disappointed. Starting with the meats; the moist brisket was very good. Tender and flavorful with a nice smoke ring, everyone liked the moist brisket. The lean brisket was dry, and we only got moist brisket after the first family style plate. The pork ribs were okay. They had good flavor, but they were just not very meaty. Maybe it was just the batch that we were served, but we got several rounds of ribs with our family style meals, and they were all about the same. The sausage was unremarkable and disappointing. We weren’t given an option and didn’t specifically ask, but if they have jalapeno sausage, I suggest giving that a try if you really want sausage. The moist brisket was the winner for everyone at the table. The sides fell flat with everyone at the table. I’m not sure what kind of potato salad it was, maybe some type of German potato salad, but nobody liked it. Maybe if it was served warm, it might be better but served cold it tasted like leftover potato salad that you got out of a refrigerator because nobody ate it the day before! And the cole slaw? Maybe an Asian twist on cole slaw, I’m not sure. Definitely not traditional cole slaw. Nobody at the table liked the cole slaw or the beans either. It’s crazy because there are great reviews out there, so maybe it is just my family, but we didn’t ask for seconds on any of the sides for our family style meal. I saw some folks get macaroni and cheese, which looked good, but we didn’t try it. There were also some awesome looking desserts, but again, based on our food, we elected to skip dessert. Bottom line, in my book The Salt Lick is not worth all the hype. But, hey, this is just my opinion based on one family meal that we had there. Unfortunately, there are so many other options for great BBQ out there, that we will not be going back. Please give it a try for yourself if you are up for it, but I can’t recommend it. Sorry.
I was quite looking forward to eating here, as I've been to a different location once and recall it being very good. But the initial wait, extra wait, and more wait for food was long and the food underwhelming. When we arrived, it wasn't super busy but we did get an estimated wait time of 10-15min, which ended up being more like 20-25. Saw a group that arrived after us seated before us too. Then after being seated, we waited another 10-15min before being greeted by our waitress. During this time, I saw 2 other tables seated after us get waited on and food orders in. After putting in our order, I stopped timing, but we waited what felt like another long while before getting our food. During this time, I saw the other 2 tables receive their food, and joked that they'd be done eating before we got our dinner. Our food finally came, and despite the fact that by then, we were starving, it was underwhelming. It wasn't bad, but I've had better BBQ in north Texas. The wet brisket wasn't as soft and tender as it should've been. The pork ribs were good. The sides were mediocre. And the $4 upcharge for mac and cheese wasn't worth it. I wouldn't recommend TSL based off of my experience. But if you do go, hopefully you have a better experience! The 2 star vs 1 star is cause the pork ribs and the mac and cheese (but not worth the upcharge) were good.
Last weekend, my family and our soccer club dined at Salt Lick. When another family and I arrived, our youngest sons were already seated in the back room with their teammates and families. I informed one of the male managers at the host stand that we were part of the soccer team already dining. He told us that because there were only an additional 10 of us that needed to seated that we could not be seated at one of the large tables next to the team since it seats 12 people. I explained that additional members of our group were on their way, as our other son’s team would also be joining us. He responded that they do not seat incomplete parties and suggested we order to-go and eat outside. We decided to walk to the back room to let our sons know we had arrived but were unable to be seated. While doing so, we noticed that nearly half the restaurant was empty, including two large tables and a smaller table open in the back room. There was clearly enough space for us and the rest of our older son’s team to join so we seat down at the small table. Shortly after, another manager, Lisa, entered the back room to seat a family not part of our group. She told us we could not sit at the open table and asked us to leave. I explained the situation and assured her that we did not want to overwhelm the server and were more than willing to be patient with food and drinks. Despite this, she refused and repeatedly stated that “this is not how the restaurant is run,” explaining that seating was based strictly on server rotation. Thankfully, the server who was already taking care of our group witnessed the situation and kindly offered to seat us at the large table next to our team. She assured us she would be happy to take care of us. Emma was absolutely wonderful—attentive, friendly, and professional. She apologized for the situation and provided excellent service throughout the meal. Emma also informed two male managers of what had occurred, and they later came over to apologize. Unfortunately, our older son’s team was never allowed to sit in the back room with the rest of the club, even though the restaurant remained only about half full. They ended up ordering to-go and eating outside. Thankfully it was a beautiful day to sit outside. While the food was great, the management experience was extremely disappointing. Our group spent thousands of dollars, yet we seriously considered leaving and going elsewhere due to how poorly the situation was handled. Salt Lick would benefit greatly from more flexible and family-friendly group accommodations. Lisa’s behavior was rude and arrogant, and it significantly impacted our experience. Great food, but very poor management.
I cannot understand how people are giving this food anything above 2 stars. I gave two stars for the service, the food is a one star. No flavor, and bland. The brisket is almost dry, can be swung back and forth without breaking, and no flavor. The beans tasted like a scented candle. No, really, not being funny. Potato salad, well, not sure. The ones who like this BBQ probably argue about fast food burgers.
We've eaten at Salt Lick in the past and it's been okay; we decided to order to-go and spent a large amount of money on our order, to only throw most of it away. The food was tasteless, the brisket…

I had brisket and ribs - was looking forward to a wonderful lunch, on the way from Houston to Round Rock, and thought "Salt Lick," as we dined at the original a few times, and it was a "wow," there…
CHECK YOUR TO-GO ORDER BEFORE LEAVING Ordered 0.5lb of pork ribs, 0.5lb sausage, and 1lb of brisket at the restaurant. Got home, opened the box, and immediately noticed the brisket was nowhere close to 1lb. I weighed it to be sure, confirmed it was short and only 7.9oz(0.49lb). Called the restaurant right away, was put on hold, then told the manager was "busy" and nothing could be done because I had already taken the food. Their stance: it's your responsibility to inspect every item before leaving. It's not about the money - it's the attitude. Zero accountability, no apology, no resolution. Poor customer service and even worse follow through. Won't be back and will dispute this part of charge.
Food was not worth it at all! Brisket was thick and very fatty. Beans tasted like the came out of a can and coleslaw was bitter. Mac n cheese was okay. Would definitely not come back. Not sure what the hype is. Customer service was good and that’s all.
I was very excited to try this place because I saw a lot of good videos. Unfortunately my experience was disappointing. We ordered bison ribs, pork ribs, brisket and sausage. After few minutes I started my food, I found a long hair in my bison ribs. The brisket wasn’t too bad, sausage was average but the bison ribs was so chewy. Finally worst of all was the desert. We asked for half tray of cobbler but it was terrible. I’m attaching the picture we only ate couple spoons and left the rest.
I ordered from Saltlicks Roundrock for the first time in January. I ordered the Rib Plate that had 1 Beef Rib and 1 Bison Rib with baked beans potatoes salad and cold slaw for $32.47 for takeout. My hotel room was just about 10 minutes away from the Saltlicks. When I got to my room and started to eat this is what I encountered: both of the ribs were Cold, Overcooked, and Tuff. It was a 3 compartment food tray. They put the ribs in the front of the tray, they put the baked beans on a cup with a top on it on the back right side compartment and they mixed the Potatoe Salad and Coldslaw together in the back left compartment. It was like slop!!! I wish I could post a Pic of the Plate. I went to bed hungry and Very Disappointed. I will never dine here again!!!
Food cold. Manager tried to make up with warm it. Not interested in that. All class restraints I’ve been to in my 40 years of fine dining don’t serve it unless its temperature is well heated. I’m not going back. So many better restaurants are available. I don’t recommend this one to anyone that wants to pay a lot for something is cold.
The Salt Lick BBQ – Amazing Staff, Disappointing Food I want to start by saying the staff at The Salt Lick BBQ were absolutely incredible! Our waitress was wonderful, and the overall atmosphere was fun and welcoming. The kindness of the people there truly stood out and made the experience enjoyable—at least in that regard. Unfortunately, the food itself was a huge letdown. We were expecting bold, flavorful barbecue, especially in a place known for its Austin BBQ reputation, but it just didn’t deliver. There was little to no seasoning, and the flavors were underwhelming. We didn’t want to make a fuss, so we quietly left and ended up throwing our food out as soon as we walked out the door. If you’re looking for exceptional service and a great atmosphere, this place has it. But if you’re after truly flavorful, well-seasoned barbecue, I’d recommend looking elsewhere.
Not impressed. Tough chewy beef ribs, decent mac n cheese, and baked beans that taste nasty when it first touches your pallete; but then leaves an equally awful metallic aftertaste. The quality on the ribs was not consistent. You'll have 1 part that's juicy, another that's dry and tough, and then 1 part that's a mix of both somehow. Didn't finish it; threw the rest in the trash. The employees were very nice but I'm going back to Slab's BBQ for now.
