Van's is a long-standing Asian restaurant loved for its fresh food, extensive wine selection, and friendly service, especially from Hien and Miss Angie. Some find the building run-down and note price increases, but many praise the quality and unique dishes like the Pho.

Huge selection of the very best wines of Texas and the world. The carb meal that we had was also excellent. If you love wine this place will not disappoint.

Try the Iced Herbal Tea. (no refills, it's THAT good). ALL the soups were delicious. The lemon chicken was one big sliced chicken beast (not little chunks) , Big healthy pieces of tofu and flavorful garlic sauce.

Pleasantly surprised! I had their Pho and found that it was unlike any other in the city. The use of basil and something about the bone in recipie was different in a really great way. Try it out, you will be happy you did!

Every time we go, the food is on point and the service is exceptional. It is a family run business with everything made in house, none of the prepackaged sauces, etc. Specials are always incredible and he always has something new to try. The wine. When you walk in, look around the second room. Walls and walls of wine to choose from. Will never stop going to Van's, they have become like family over the years.

First place, everyday hours are 11:00am to 9:00pm. That was asked of me by the staff. Okay now for the review. Just amazing. My dad and I were just wondering around the area and happened to find this place because it was still open. We approached the counter and asked a waiter to be seated, and he said that we could sit anywhere, which is actually a luxury for me since I've never been to a restaurant that has given us a choice. Next, he gave us our menus, and after we asked about the dinner option, he showed us that he was very knowledgeable about it. He offered suggestions based on our preferences that we could not be happier with. Oh, also, a side note: some of their foods have not been selling so well, so they were removed from the menu, though they have yet to update it. Just so everyone knows. And by the way, my waiter's name is Tommy. He is very patient, calm, and displayed a very professional attitude toward us. If you happen to have him serve you during your visit there, then everything will go smoothly from the moment you greet him to the moment you walk out.

Great food, great service, and great company. Mongolian beef was awesome! Chicken lomein couldn't be beat, and the fried dumplings were phenomenal! Not only that, but the owner/waitress has a great sense of humor as well as wisdom regarding menu choices! Wish it weren't 300 miles, I want more!

Been coming here since before they moved to this location almost 28 years ago. Haven't looked at a menu in almost all those years. Hien can cook anything you want and he will if if he has it, all you have to do is ask. Wine variety and prices combined make it the most affordable and best selection in the city. They were closed for much of the pandemic except for reservations for dinner in the last several months. He is talking about opening for lunch again sometime soon, provided he can find some help in the kitchen that is dependable. Currently he does all the cooking himself.

This place is awesome, service is fast and food is delicious! Owner is awesome and funny.. Miss Angie is very nice and helpful! They have great wine and spring rolls are the best! I can honestly say I have tried almost everything on there menu! The sushi is great my personal favorite is the Dragon Roll! definitely recommend to have dinner or lunch here.

One of our favorite places to dine. They have the best wine inventory in San Antonio, with many aged wines that are not available at other restaurants. We were able to tour the kitchen, there are tanks everywhere, can’t get seafood any fresher than that. Our favorite item on the menu is the Popcorn Shrimp. A seemingly simple dish of fried shrimp and broccoli, it is full of flavor!

I love this place! I’ve eaten here since the late 80s. It’s sad to see them struggle after Covid, but they’re hanging on. Please eat here! Support local! The food is amazing in spite of the building being run down. Their wine selection Bo’s INSANE!

So I'm in from out of town and was looking for new places to eat. This place had really good reviews and I have to say I'm very happy I chose this restaurant. Very good food, great service. The guy literally took 15min and went through every item on the menu with me until I decided. Definitely worth my money and one my eating nights while in San Antonio.

Spent the evening at a private holiday party surrounded by great people, memorable food, and exceptional wine. Somehow no photos—just good conversation and full plates. Access to this venue is worth seeking out.

Great quick and pleasant service. Of the 3 dishes we ordered 2 were fantastic, the shrimp fried rice and pepper steak lunch portion. I decided to try the wonton noodle soup, and I will not recommend this as the meat treated somewhat like meat gone bad. Owyhee everything was awesome

Great food. We were pleasantly surprised by how good the food tasted. We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and the sweet and sour chicken. The chicken was great in both meals. The portion sizes were large enough for two people per meal.

I've driven by it for years without trying it. Very good & slightly spicy hot & sour soup. Great garlic sauce on the Broccoli Garlic Sauce, which was really a good mix of vegetables. Good portions. Brought me fried rice instead of the requested steamed. Good though. Waiter had trouble taking the order the first time. Wine selection. A bit pricey at $9 for a vegetarian plate lunch. I'll go back.

My First Visit to Vans and I have to say I was quite impressed with the Food. I asked suggestions from my waiter and He told me hands down the best seller on the menu was the Firecracker Shrimp. It was pricy in my opinion but I decided on it anyway and Wow. It was wonderful. I left with enough for lunch tomorrow no doubt. Nice quiet place and knowledgeable staff. I will return..

Husband and I had lunch here today. Some great things, and a few areas for improvement. We came in to a pleasant space with several 4-tops. The granite tops on the tables are nice, but our table had some sticky spots. More attention to cleaning would be good. Iced tea was good. My egg drop soup was GREAT with lots of chicken, corn kernels and eggy flavor. Husband's pho (rice noodle soup) had a deeply flavored broth, and it was loaded with sliced beef. He was also served bean sprouts and fresh cilantro to go with. No fresh basil or lime. He really liked that soup!! My sesame chicken was very flavorful, but the meat was a bit stringy and over cooked. The egg rollers good, and the fried rice was WONDERFUL! Lots of ginger and garlic in it, which was unexpected, but delicious. Good service, nice folks. All in all, a good experience.

Their Vietnamese noodle soup is not listed as Pho since it doesn't fit the traditional flavor profile, but I thought it was really good. They no longer serve sushi, which is such a bummer. All in all a pretty decent place.

Food was Good, wait staff was gloomy and they haven't updated their menu, they were out of many items we asked for. Vans needs a facelift or new energy flowing to revamp their business. Best to Van!

The food was really delicious, the waiter was friendly, but the building itself needs some work. It's def outdated and gives the restuarant a bit of a dirty feel to it.

I've always heard good things about this place but I was disappointed. Service was good but the food wasnt too great. My husband talked it up while we waited and I was starving! Unfortunately I left hungry. I had a few bites and let my husband finish it off. The flavors were just off.

K
Krista

Our waitress was slow and seemed like she really didn't want to be there. We were the only patrons in the place, so the slow service was something of a mystery. The food (when we finally got it) was not bad, but nothing special. I had the pad-thai, and asked for extra lime, which they apparently didnt have, so lemon was substituted. At these prices, you'd think they could afford lime! It really changed the flavor of the pad-thai, so it was disappointing. My friend had the sweet and sour chicken, which was served with the sauce on the side. He said it was soggy, tough, and undercooked. I then made the ultimate mistake and asked for a pot of hot water, a teacup and a spoon-basically everything needed for tea, except for the teabag (I have my own). I don't do this to get out of paying for hot tea, I simply have my own preference. I tip very well, keeping that in mind. She brought the metal pot to me full of jasmine tea, which I didn't want. She swore there was no tea in the pot, until I showed her the yellowish water. She took the pot and disappeared for so long I almost left. She came back with a tall glass of hot water. I told her that I couldn't drink tea like that, said "nevermind" and she then came back with a smaller, clean pot of hot water that was perfect saying she was gone for so long because she couldn't get the other pot cleaned out enough, no matter how many times she cleaned it. Apparently the teapots never get cleaned??!! I'd hope the health inspectors would look at things like this!! How hard is it to clean a metal pot? We sat in the front room, and not the main restaurant, which I can only hope is better maintained. There were cases of wine all over the room, an empty wine dispenser thing and an empty some other type of equipment, so we felt like we were sitting in a half-finished room that was a catch-all for unused equipment and storage room for cases of wine. Apparently, this restaurant sells more wine than food, because that looked to be the main focus, at least in the room I was in. Strangely, though, the racks behind the counter were only partially full of dusty bottles, so I can only conclude they are stocking up the wine cases for the zombie apocolypse (or to give little critters a place to sleep). I was not in the least bit favorably impressed, and I certainly will never be back.

The food was great and we were served big portions, (although it resembled Americanized Chinese food more than Vietnamese) but the service was awful. The server seemed annoyed with us from the start, didn't introduce himself or anything, just asked what we wanted. I mispronounced something and he grimaced, acting like he didn't know what I was asking for, even though I was pointing to it (!!). Then he disappeared and we didn't see him again the rest of the time we were there.

Z
ZADKIEL242

The service was quick and friendly. The food was OK. The Vietnamese dishes were somewhat limited. This place can't decide if it wants to be a Vietnamese, Chinese, or Japanese restaurant. Variety is good but this place just misses the mark.

Pho didnt have very many noodles and the spring rolls seemed like they were just ground beef in a wonton wrapper. Seemed a bit overpriced for the amount of food as well.

Man we had very high hopes for our first time here. Service was good but food was not. We first try to order sushi to start they said they didn’t have any even though it was on the menu. Then we ordered 2 apps(Rangoon, egg drop soup) to start with and they were ok. We followed that up with there combo fried rice and sesame chicken. Both were really bad and lacked any flavor. The sesame sauce was not a typical sauce it tasted more like a spice bbq sauce.

So sad that this place would mess with sharks. I remember going here once the food was disgusting. Plus they had a petty parking war with the restaurant next door. 😒

M
Mary Alvarado

The first time we went they ran out of rice (??!!!?) And my orange chicken was hard as a rock, very obviously something that had been cooked long before and reheated throughout the day. Last night my partner wanted curry and we were in the area so we decided to give it another try. WORST, pricey decision ever. His curry was dry, ridiculously spicy, and had nearly no flavor. My small bok choy had a mound of minced garlic on the top that permeated the veggies, it was overpowering and unpleasant. We also ordered beef with shitake mushrooms. The mushrooms were hit and miss, well done and then very gross and dirty tasting, almost as if they weren't washed. The kicker was the meat. It was DISGUSTING, it tasked rotten and old. I nearly vomited tasting it. If we didn't live so far I would have gone back and forced them to eat it to tell me it wasn't rotten. I am so disgusted with the food from this place and to add salt to the wound it's ridiculously overpriced for the crap you get. Save yourself the time and money, this place is awful.

J
JTheBarberette

If I could give zero stars I would. Tried several things on the menu and everything was disappointing. Combo pad Thai had bad shrimp, spring rolls tasted off, rangoons were oily with hardly any filling. Chicken lo mein was barely seasoned and had huge chunks of half cooked vegetables. Also, they added a pre-tip amount on my card! Will never return

t
todd bales

Eat here at your own risk. The place is filthy. I was sick for 2 days after a horrible meal. The health department should shut this place down. If ZERO stars were an option, that's what would have given.

D
Denyse Pettersson

CLOSED—looks like permanently. They can’t be courteous enough to update this on the Google search. It has the prior opening times. On top of that, they have a bright neon sign that says open. How ridiculous is that. I don’t understand what their problem is. They obviously don’t care about any customers.

This place was just on the news for trading shark fins, which is illegal in TX. If you eat here, you give support to the shark finning practice perpetrated primarily by the Chinese who have been depleting the entire world's fish stock. I hope the authority fines them out of business.

S
San Antonio Chick

“When they cut off the fins, the shark is still alive, and then only 1 to 5 percent of the shark even gets used,” Vice President for U.S. Oceans at Oceana Jacqueline Savitz said after Abbott signed the bill. “The bodies of the shark are then thrown back into the ocean, only to drown, starve or die a slow death.” NEVER give money to this place.

I've had better pho elsewhere for less. Very little flavor to the soup. My first time. I went for a clay pot, but wasn't on menu.

a

Went here to try this spot, saw they had "SHARK FIN SOUP" on their menu when asked about it to see how fresh these "shark fins" were and they started to get angry with me for asking about THEIR soup....well anyways got asked to leave since I mentioned that shark fins are illegal in Texas and it's illegal to make shark fin soup since "finning" has massively reduced the shark population anyways hopefully texas game wardens look into this place....although quite the experience hahahaha 😆 😂

The place was empty, and the lady stated that I needed to have reservations at least 24 hours in advance in order for me to have the privilege to eat in. So, I asked for carryout and was told that they don't do carryout because the food will be too expensive for me to pay for. Thats when I realized that I was not welcome in their establishment. The only thing I can assume was that they only serve certain folks in there, and I don't fit their profile. Their bad, and from other comments I read, I am glad that I did not eat their food.

35 minutes for one Pad Thai order to go. Entrees went up to almost $20 a plate. Chicken was old and dry. Absolutely gross. Will never go back.

You walk in and given a menu. The waitress tells you there is a $5.00 price increase on all the food. The portions are not worth a $5.00 price increase. The springs rolls are not as good as advertised. For good spring rolls, Taste of Asia or Kim Pho Long. The prices are way better than this place and better food. Or just go to an Asian Market by some frozen and fry them yourself

This place is still open... it should be shut down though. Went in today with my husband and I regret it terribly. We got food poisoning. I ordered the Mongolian beef lunch special and my husband had the curry chicken. The beef was so old it had a weird smell to it, the taste was far worse, and it was super gummy. The curry chicken looked like throw up and tasted just as bad as it looked. The rice was soggy and seemed to have 0 seasoning. The waitress was adamant we order something else, we didn't feel comfortable trying anything else as she told us everything was just as fresh as what we ordered. The food tasted at least a week or two old. We paid and left quickly. We got very sick and will never come back. Do your stomach a favor and go to the Vietnam restaurant next door
