Cafe Mint (Chela's) is a popular spot known for its fresh, tasty Mexican food and friendly service. The chorizo breakfast burrito, ribeye tacos, and fish tacos are highly praised. Some find it pricey for the portion size, but many enjoy the atmosphere.
Tip: Try the happy hour for deals on fish tacos. Beware the habanero hot sauce if you don't like spicy food.
Fast and friendly service and the food is always great!
Taquitos were so good. I had a rib eye taco and would eat 10 more if could fit them in my belly. I also had a carnitas taco. Super yummmm. They were busy and had great attitudes. I will definitely give them my business again. Please visit this restaurant. Their food is the best.
In town from Arizona, and ordered some burritos. The Grilled Ribeye burrito had very good flavor, as did the MVP burrito. We also ordered a Chile verde burrito wet and it was incredible. Loved the flavor of all the different components to the burrito, AND the salsas were great!
Had Chelas this evening with my boyfriend. I had the beef taquitos, and he had the grilled rib eye burrito...it was soooo good! The staff were so friendly, and the atmosphere was very relaxing. We are from Texas and picked this place and boy are we glad we did.
Rib eye tacos are absolutely amazing!!!! The sauce is a smokey chipotle and it hits all the right taste buds. It's spicy good! The chicken crispy tacos have lots of flavor perfect for the non spicy lovers. Highly recommend.
Great food. Great service. Chill atmosphere. The only thing that can make it better is when they start serving alcohol 🍸 and I was told they will be in the near future. As for the beer lovers, you're in luck 😜
Chela’s is such an amazing spot for authentic Mexican food. They have great deals on Tuesday’s & Thursday’s, and their food is always so fresh and tasty. Jose always offers such great service and we love going there!
I am a huge fan of their chicken tacos. The best taco Tuesday. The cheese and lettuce is so fresh . And now they have two locations.
Wow! The only reason we don't go more often is the lack of Margaritas. That said, the Verde wet burrito is one of the best burritos I've ever had. It's neck and neck with their rib eye burrito. ( the marinade is amazing! ) The chips and green salsa (when fresh) are some of the best in town. My only complaint is they don't have a bag of chips for 2. Spending $4 plus on a bag of chips for 4 is ridiculous. They do have tiny little bags for $1 each that have about 5 chips in them. Not enough for 1 person, let alone 2. This is a real miss on their part as almost EVERY Mexican joint gives chips away as they cost next to nothing. Solution suggestion: 1/2 bag for $2 if you really need to charge patrons buying entrees. The service is great! As are the people there. Super friendly and they take the time to remember you. Chelas is our go-to currently. Wish they had margis.
Highly recommend this spot for some tasty Mexican food with incredibly generous portions! We tried the Chile Verde wet burrito and ribeye burrito. Both gigantic and came with chips and salsa. Can't wait to come back to try more of the menu!
Awesome real good tasting burritos I mean this is the place to go lot of variety. chips are phenomenal
Such a pleasant surprise! Sometimes fast food Mexican is not so Bueno! The chips were light, crisp and so fresh. The guacamole was seasoned to perfection. My husband loved the beans. We came on Taco Tuesday based on someone's recommendation and it totally satisfied!
Love businesses that are loyal to there customers and believe that customers come first! Been visiting this restaurant a few times a month, Went in on a Friday night and they had a DJ music , treats and champagne and beer to celebrate their one year anniversary. The place was very busy, the customer service outstanding, the food hot, fresh, excellent, to top it off place was very clean. Thank you to the owner for valuing us- your customer. It doesn’t go unnoticed, We appreciate it as we spread the word of a great place to eat.
Long over due review but I have loved dining with Chelas since their first location in Laguna Niguel and now get to enjoy dining with Chelas in San Clemente! I order probably at least once a week, I love the food and the habanero sauce is my favorite! All the employees are also so kind and welcoming, they always remember me when I walk in.
Good food, prepared fresh and very friendly service.
I had an hour to kill and it was lunchtime, so I walked around some food places and walked into Chelas to take a look, and one look was all it took! I looked at what people were eating. The tacos definitely looked authentic and the place smelled of deliciousness… so I stayed and enjoyed a plate of chicken taquitos. Nice presentation and they were delicious! (I posted a photo) Service was good too!
Fantastic small family owned Mexican place that has the best burritos we’ve ever had, particularly the Chelas MVP Breakfast Burrito and the Baja steak and shrimp burrito. Great homemade tortilla chips as well! So good. 😊
Went to Chelas on Camino Los Mares in San Clemente. Outstanding food and service. This will be one of my the restaurant I recommend to all my friends.
Food is tasty. Fresh ingredients well prepared. Top with any salsa they are all fantastic a couple are very spicy =) The service is impressive. This is our new go-to for take out/patio Mexican cuisine.
They just moved here from Laguna Niguel apparently and we’re fortunate to have them. We really needed a good Mexican food place here in the east part of San Clemente and Chelas fits that description. We ordered take out the other night and everything was really great. I had steak and carnitas tacos and my wife had grilled and battered fish tacos. They were all very good but I think the carnitas were the best. Very moist and not dried out at all. We also ordered chips with guacamole and salsa and all were very good as well. But for me the stand out was the refried beans. Rarely in my opinion, do Mexican restaurants make really good refried beans, but these were amazing and truly reminded me of the ones that were in a big pot at my grandmas house growing up. All in all a great place and they were super friendly and helpful as well. This place definitely deserves our support so we can keep it thriving here in San Clemente!
UPDATEs : 9/19 ANGEL IS A PHENOMENAL EMPLOYEE !! He is such a great addition to your staff. Keep him!!! We were in on Monday… This past week with a large group and he took such great care of us! It makes our decision to come back and grab food here so much easier knowing that he’s he dishing it up. We love CHELAS!!! We have searched high and low for the last 10 months for the best Mexican food in San Clemente and we’ve had great experiences BUT THIS , BY FAR, is the absolute GREATEST FRESHEST TASTIEST MEXICAN FOOD… hands down!!!! Monday, Wednesday & Fridays 3pm happy hour food… fish tacos are OUTSTANDING! My husband and shared a breakfast burrito… sorry I did because I wanted it all for myself! Five different types of salsa to choose from… Our favorite was the habanero. I highly recommend coming here for not only the food but for customer service as well! How wonderful that they share … yes SHARE the tips with the cooks!!! That’s really taking care of your people!! We can’t wait to come back and enjoy the great taste of your establishment
Amazing food! The employees are very nice and attentive! They have a great drink selection as well. Would definitely recommend coming here for lunch or dinner! I love their flavors everything is always fresh!
We got take out dinner here tonight for the first time. We had the delicious fish tacos and the chicken salad with its yummy lime dressing! Both items were good size and they have good happy hour deals (2 fish tacos for $6). Another customer had a good sized burrito and said it was super tasty! Casual cute place inside a few tables outside. Beer and wine coming in the fall.
Stopped at the restaurant after going to Post Office because I was hungry and they had two crispy tacos, rice and beans and some chips in order to drink and it was all excellent and I sat outdoors because certainly enjoy a good food and a good restaurant.

Hidden gem! Chorizo breakfast burrito was amazing! Very cute atmosphere inside. Customer service was on point as well!
Best Breakfast burritos in the world, better than Felipe’s breakfast burritos.
Chela’s is my go to place for Mexican food. The food is great and the service is even better. Love the crew and the place!!
Very delicious burritos. And I love their fresh made guac. Chips are good too. I like the habanero hot sauce but beware if you don’t like spicy hot sauce The service is very good and their menu has many options. Can’t wait to go back. Plenty of parking around this location and the food was made quickly. We went for breakfast
Absolutely some of the best tacos I've ever had - my opinions have been reinforced by friends. They make a true El Pastor which is so very hard to find with the sweet chucks of pineapple and the pork cooked just right. I may need to go there for lunch now, this review is making me hungry. Try this place - they have multiple locations
The best food!! I got the Wednesday Happy Hour 2 incredibly fresh fish tacos with chips and salsa for 6.00!! My husband got the steak enchiladas which were also great! Excellent tasting food. The chips and salsa are great and they sell bags of the chips there. I like that they play Mexican music instead of radio crap. On tap or bottle beers are 5.00 at Happy hour, which is Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 3 pm to close, but also on Taco Tuesday and Thirsty Thursday. We will definitely be back. I might mention that my husband and I are real food snobs- not that it has to be fancy but that it has to be fresh, clean, and tasty. 😁
Best place for taco Tuesday and any other day of the week. Great food, always clean and friendly service.
Jose was very helpful, our first time, and the food was legit!! Our son turned us on to this place and we will be back often!!!!
Good food, prepared fresh and very friendly service.

First visit, I had the “famous” wet chili verde burrito. The verde sauce was nicely mild and flavorful. The pork chunks were good quality, no fat or chewy pieces. It’s a big burrito, nice sized serving @ $14.75. Staff was OK, store clean enough. I must comment on the pleasant “Mexican music”, seemed to be contemporary, nice to listen to while eating. Recommended.
The vibe is super cute, reminded me of a beach shop in Mexico including Mexican music playing and soccer on the television. Food was a little disappointing, a bit on the bland side and pricey. Portions are very large. They do offer several Mexican beers ( bottles and tap) and sodas. Laura working the counter was awesome, super friendly!
Great tasting food overall. Good portion size for the price. Helpful staff. I’ve had better loaded fries, but the ribeye burrito was excellent. Their habanero salsa was very hot but flavorful
I had lunch at Chelas including their steak burrito and a coke for about $18. Nice decorations, friendly staff, and clean. I thought the prices were really high for what is basically a fast food Mexican restaurant. The burrito was good but relatively small for its $15 price.

Want to write a review on the excellent lunch I had here yesterday. I'd been wanting to try Chelas for a while and finally got a chance when my buddy stopped by and said "let's get some tacos". The place is super clean and the help is very attentive. We both had the 2 taco, rice & bean combos and a couple ice cold draft Modelos; I had the al pastor tacos and he had the fish. Both of us commented on how especially good the rice and beans were . Not just fillers. Sabroso. My al pastor tacos were really good, and my buddy said the same about his fish tacos. Look forward to bringing my wife here soon. 4.5 stars

Went to Chelas on Pico on Sunday March 23rd, placed a carnitas burrito order with the woman behind the counter, I told her I wanted a breakfast burrito with Carnitas eggs, cheese, and cilantro, She was confused as to what to charge me because I had made a custom order. After about five minutes, she figured out the bill., I Explicitly stated no onions, no potatoes no rice and no beans. When I got home and opened up the wrapper, the burrito had eggs, Cheese, beans, but no cheese and very little carnitas. I was very disappointed since I did not get the order that I had placed. I’ve been going to Kayla‘s quite often but now I am somewhat conflicted if I should go back again.
When Chelas is good, it’s GOOD. But they’re so inconsistent. For example, in 3 consecutive breakfast burrito orders, they “forgot” steak, hash browns, and cheese. In that order. Another time, they “forgot” guac and sour cream on a bunch of asada fry orders. They’ll beer batter fish when it’s supposed to be grilled, etc. Wish they’d be more consistent.
I like the chili verde burrito and the la gringa tacos. Price is good for what you get except if you add anything on. I was charged to add sour cream and they literally gave me a teaspoon.
The burrito steak and the nachos have been quite satisfactory. The customer service has been somewhat inconsistent, with no eye contact when interacting with a customer, no smiles when interacting with staff, and no ability to listen to customer requests in a manner that aligns with impatience resulting in food orders being incorrectly processed.

We got the chipotle ribeye tacos, as the menu said that dish was voted number #1 best in OC. We were pretty disappointed. The tacos were drowning in chipotle mayo sauce, which made it difficult to taste the other ingredients in the tacos. The beef was full of gristle bits that we had to spit out pretty frequently. The mild salsa they make in house is very watery. I don’t recommend this place — you’re better off going to Chipotle unfortunately.
Wished I would have taken a photo but didn't normally love this place but now have learned to never order online for later pick up. I feel like the started to prepare my food when I placed the order which would have been fine if I asked for rush order instead of requesting for pick up time about one hour later. The food was cold which was fine for my lettuce and guacamole but not for the rest of the food. Won't order online again
Most disappointing burrito in years. $16 for the ribeye burrito, served with tough and stringy meat. The chipotle barbecue marinade on it is delicious, but they really need to buy better quality meat at that price. The burrito was also built with all the ingredients in separate sections, so you could only get a bite of all guacamole or all cabbage, never a balanced bite. Service and atmosphere were great. Would have loved the place if the food were better. 2/5, wouldn't recommend.

Burrito tastes ok, it has too much rice, too little meat and comparing to other places I’ve been they lost on price and portion. Spending over 16 still hungry afterwards. Restaurant is clean and nice decorated is the only positive. Customer service was good too.
I preordered and paid for food for a work event and the day of the largest event the “kitchen” staff forgot my full order. They didn’t even allowed me to speak to the manager and they have the worst customer service imaginable. Hope the manager or owner can reach out to make this right I am a local company and this is just wrong to do.
If you order a bowl, expect 80% lettuce and little amounts of protein. They have a decent menu but behind false promises of "Mexican" food, it's not.
Terrible. They charge for salsa! I walked in and ordered a burrito. The employee asked what salsa I wanted. I've never eaten at any of their locations before so I asked for a side of each so I can determine which ones I prefer for next time. They only have like 4 different types of salsa so it's not like I was asking for an ocean. The guy said only 2 sides of salsa are included and that more would cost extra. Of the countless Mexican restaurants I've been to here in south county, or anywhere for that matter, NEVER IN MY LIFE did any of them charge for salsa on the side. UNBELIEVABLE for a restaurant to nickle and dime customers like that. Sancho's Tacos for instance has way better burritos and WAY more salsa varieties, and not once did they give me a hard time, let alone charge, for sides of salsa.
Went to the new location. We ordered, TO GO. The food came out on plates. We said My Bad let me Fix this. We waited 20 min to receive our food, waiting was fine, I figured they were re making the order. NOPE!!!!! Pushed in a box and said here you go.....Sorry for the inconvenience. Come to find out i had Iced Toquitos and a Chicken Fajita burito, with no Chicken, I might add.!!!! Lost a customer. And Train your workers better. 14 bucks for cold Toquitos and 15 bucks for a Burrito with little to no Chicken. Extremely Disappointed!!!!!
