Steak was awesome! I don't usually like getting steak when I eat out at new places because I always feel like if I wanted good steak I can always grill it myself and it would be better... but this was pretty good and I would definitely come back here for it again! The Seafood/Squid ink spaghetti is really good too! It's kind of hard to find in San Diego so make sure to come here and try it! It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for! The appetizers are really good as well!
FOOD & DRINKS I have been here twice on two consecutive days. That should say everything , right? After the first visit I was so eager to try out more. The execution of the food was amazing, well seasoned and not skimping on fresh ingredients. The seafood doria was awesome. The lobster pizza though was a bit of a disappointment. Not that it didn’t taste good, you just either couldn’t taste the lobster because there was so much cheese on it or had a hard time to even find pieces of lobster. I would reimagine this dish to make the lobster shine more! The omelet too could get more of a Japanese treatment and be more silky and smooth. It would still go well with the Italian meat sauce. SERVICE Lovely service. ATMOSPHERE Has a bit of a small European bistro flair tucked between some bigger restaurants. RATING If I want to eat very good Italian food with a touch of Japanese finish, this is the place to come to. Highly recommended!
Absolutely exquisite. Beautiful food, wonderful atmosphere with music, great service. I’m Italian, but also love Japanese food. Match made in Heaven.
I contest that some of the best pasta dishes in San Diego can be found at our small handful of Italian-Japanese restaurants. The "best known" place like this is Shin's in La Jolla, but the best spot to actually dine at is definitely Bistro Kaz on Convoy. My favorite squid ink pastas are unapologetic about the squid ink like Bistro Kaz's. Here, the squid ink is used as more than just food color, and you can taste and enjoy its glorious oceanic brininess. Ample amounts of meaty squid chunks are also included. It's a fairly intense and umami-fied dish, but thankfully some fresh elements on the plate help keep it balanced. While you're at Bistro Kaz, check out their ultra-flavorful consommé, a soup that will leave you scratching your head about how they figured out how to liquefy the best roasted meat dish you've had this month. Also, this is one of the few restaurants in San Diego serving "Omurice," a Japanese fusion food consisting of a fluffy egg omelet filled with rice that has become popular in Japan with late night revelers. At Bistro Kaz, I suggest the variant served with stewed beef hayashi sauce that is named "Omuhayashi."
Quiet and Cozy for a lunch date or small groups. Great menu with options for all.
Great dinner at Bistro Kaz on Convoy Street! Not often do you see Japanese Italian fusion, so we had to give it a try and were not disappointed. We ordered the unagi eel pizza, Japanese pancake with pork and shrimp, sea urchin spread, and chicken doria which were all super yummy and a lot of cheesy goodness. The service was very friendly and accommodating! If you like food that you can’t get anywhere else then you have to come by and try! Recommend!
I brought my Italian mother in law to try this restaurant out. We ordered a small house salad, a cabbage wrapped meatballs, a burger steak and a chicken pizza. All the foods are very tasty, the portion here isn’t that big so these amount of foods are right to us. The service is nice and friendly. And the restaurant feels cozy and quiet. It’s perfect for a date.
small and cozy vibes. have been to this place several times: my top suggestions are the cold cod roe pasta and the bone marrow. however, the curries, pizzas, and appetizers are all must tries.
I didn’t know what to expect when I first heard about this Italian-Japanese fusion restaurant, however, Bistro Kaz did not disappoint! Ambiance/Service: Our party of 4 went at 5:30pm on a Thursday and there was no wait for a table. The inside is pretty small with 2-4 person tables plus 4 bar seats. I saw a party of 6 inside and by looks of the tables, they could probably accommodate a party of up to 8. Outside, there were three 2-person tables. It looked like our server was the only one working the whole floor but still, she was very nice and attentive. The pizza and salmon belly came by quickly but the pastas took maybe 10-15 min longer. Food: -Unagi Eel Pizza ($20): eight square slices— perfect to share! I’d get this again. -Miso Marinated Salmon Belly ($20): served with rice. My husband says he enjoyed this plate and would get this again next time. -Creamy Sea Urchin with Salmon Roe Pasta ($36 for market price): Served with garlic bread. The flavor was very tasty, though I wish it could have been a little bit creamier. There was a decent amount of salmon roe though not too much of the sea urchin. Overall: Very interesting flavor profile but Bistro Kaz delivered. I enjoyed the dishes that our group tried, and would love to come back to try out more!
We've been a couple times before, this was the first with the baby. She loved the uni toast (as did we) and the beef tongue stew. For dessert she preferred the mango mousse cake over the green tea tiramisu one. She also loved the table apparently. My wife and I loved everything, including the butter pasta with two kinds of roe. It was a bit warm inside but not bad. Cozy/cramped depending on your point of view. Never been busy every time we've been so never had issues with seating or waiting. Staff are very friendly. Only one "high" chair that's not super high and doesn't have anything to secure your baby so be mindful if you have a little one who won't sit still (ours lasted just long enough with the help of Ms. Rachel 😅). Also when we first walked in it had a bit of a smell to it (not inherently bad, just noticeable). Didn't take long to not notice that or the heat though, especially once we had that delicious food in our mouths. And the apps came out quickly once ordered! Uni toast is a must if you go (can also bump the squid ink pasta from last time we went as worth trying).
New favorite in all of SD. We got the Uni spread (comes with 4 large pieces of bread), unagi pizza, fries, pumpkin soup, deep fried brie cheese balls. Best menu ever with actual new and innovative dishes and also some old authentic faves that never get old. Everything I got here was delicious and worth it. Going back to try more soon. Our server Meg was excellent and sweet. Kudos to the service and the chef! Also, Google got their times wrong and apparently they can't change it, but they close at 9, not 10.
A pretty good experience. This is an Asian-Italian fusion restaurant. I haven’t eaten other dishes but these dishes are light, creative, delicious. Kinda small proportion even for a small Asian girl like me. So, don’t be too shocked. -Limited seats during Covid -Service is so-so. Have to wait for 20’ to be served. The female waitress is friendly and supportive Will come back for their Black Ink spaghetti
Sooo good! I was shocked about Japanese and Italian, but then again true Italian has a lot of seafood. Japanese really know their sea food and the combination works really well. Seafood Doria was amazing! Very rich and full of crab. I went with the squid ink. Really good, but I wish I hadn’t worn a white t-shirt.

excellent food! The unagi pizza looked & sounded great from all the reviews and this one didn't disappoint. It was super easy to split half a pizza & half a pasta dish (we had the cod roe pasta). I would definitely come back again for squid ink pasta & given soba is generally served cold - I am curious if the roe cold pasta one is inspired by soba. I thought the portions were good for what we got & the quality of the food.

Part of me doesn't want to review this place because it's such a hidden gem and I want it to stay hidden, but it's too nice of a place to not tell everyone! It's my favorite place to get Japanese Italian food. I haven't had a pasta dish that disappointed me, and my brother loves the demi glace Hamburg steak. Everything just tastes so fresh and the staff is always so friendly.

Food was excellent. Service was excellent. My family is picky and they ate the food. Some of the best Japanese and pasta I have had in long time. For a surprise they even have pizza. Best food!!!
Amazing seafood, Also quite a few non-seafood dished that can help if you have mixed group, (chicken dishes are really tasty, even the wings were exceptional) One of the best Paella you can find in SD

We came here for lunch, and interesting pasta menu. The servers were very nice. We had seafood doria and roe cream pasta. I can't say they were our favorite but we would like to come back and other items.
I’m always up for trying something new. When I found this Japanese-Italian restaurant, I had to give it a try. We went during lunch. They have two lunch combo options - one with pasta and one without. You get to choose one main dish and it comes with salad, soup and a drink. I ordered Cod Roe and Salmon Roe with butter soy sauce. The flavor was good and pasta was the right texture. However it was a bit too dry for my taste. I also tried squid ink pasta which was tasty. The chicken doria was creamy and cheesy. After our main meal, we ordered tiramisu, green tea Mont Blanc cake and pistachio ice cream. I think tiramisu needs a bit more espresso. The green tea cake on the bottom was a bit stale but green tea topping was great. Overall, it’s a good place for something different than normal Japanese/Italian Fare. The food came out fairly quick. The service was ok. The space was clean and a decent size. I would come back to try other non-pasta dishes.
I absolutely love Japanese comfort food. And Bistro Kaz does it right. You need to get the corn soup. They make it from scratch. I’m not sure how they do it, but they are able to stuff corn aroma, essence, and punch into it. The cold cod roe angel hair pasta is soothing with a touch of decadence with the roe and ikura. Comfort food is meant to be heavy, but Bistro Kaz is able to thread the needle. You leave with a warm, full belly without feeling like you’ve eaten a ton of bricks.

This is definitely one of the most interesting Japanese Italian fusion restaurants I've seen and been at. It has potential but I feel like it falls short. The cheese plate was incredibly disappointing, I would skip it. The pizza and other food was good. The lack of effort on the cheese plate really brought down the overall experience.
