We’ve driven to LA and the Irvine spot a few times just to get our Coco Ichibana fix. So we are extremely happy our favorite curry chain from Japan made it to San Diego! Their menu isn’t as extensive as Japan’s, but there’s still quite a selection to pick from. Service is quick. There’s even a button on the table (like in Japan) to call for a waiter if you need something. The food is tasty and both curries have top notch flavor. We usually get a chicken katsu cutlet, on rice, with their standard curry, and a couple sides of the garlic naan. Each of us adds different extra toppings, including: omelette, cheese, sausage, garlic chips, and veggies. Sometimes we order garlic fries or krema cheese fries. Both are delicious. They have a heat scale from mild to 20 if you’re feeling extra spicy, kids meals, ice cream, to go orders, a parking lot right in front, and they get people in and out quickly.

After living in Japan and tasting what curry is like there, there is no true substitute for the real thing, but this comes remarkably close. The flavor profile was on point, the pork cutlet was a bit tough but still delicious, and my husband’s thin sliced beef was equally good. The service was great even though the restaurant was packed. Bring an umbrella if it’s raining because the only place to wait for a table is outside with no awning.

I'm from Hawaii and I always lived goi g to Coco's. I've been away from home for a very long time and always enjoy having food that reminds me it. I live in AZ and when I head that a Coco Ichibanya was gonna open a couple of hours from my house, you bet I made the day trip. My husband and I were so excited. We have been several times since, and the food is always hot and delicious. I often get the fried chicken, and hubby likes the chicken cutlet with cheese added. Service when we go is always top notch. Attentive, quick and friendly. The restaurant itself is kind of small, and at peak meal times the wait can be long, but they do get customers through efficiently. Definitely worth the wait.

This place is the only plac3 I go to to break my diet the best food in san diego I lived in Japan and this chain was a popular curry chain in japan and its so close to the original in my opinion. I had my to go order messed up when I ate in and they put meat in my to go order (I'm vegetarian) I called and asked if I could pick up what I actually ordered today and Leena the manager answered (which is a big feet to answer the call at a place as busy as this) and she automatically just apologized for the mess up no questions asked said she will get the right order ready I got there and went to order a couple dr peppers to go home and she comped them and wouldn't let me pay. The staff here is always so nice despite how busy they always are. Best place in san diego!

It wasn’t busy, and the service was great. The portions are generous, and the food was phenomenal—I especially love that you can choose your spice level. The first time we went, I ordered the triple vegetable dish. The second time, I tried the vegetable omelet, both times at spice level 4. Next time, I’ll probably go with level 3. Everyone was polite and happy to answer all of our questions. If there’s a line when you arrive, you’ll need to scan a QR code to join the waitlist

First time at this place and it was awesome!! The wait staff is really helpful explaining the spices, but I do wish that they approached the table a little more. Definitely need to keep coming back. There's definitely enough of a serving to fill you up or even take some home! Hopefully I can experience the world-famous ones from Japan someday!

In 2000 I lived in Tokyo and worked across from the old Tsukiji fish market. On the days we didn't have sushi we went to a small Curry house, it was up one floor from the street level. It was wonderful. CoCo Ichibanya is as good or better. It takes me back 25 years to some really good times and some really good food. So far the vegetable omelet and the gyosa curries are my favorites. So much better than the curry cubes you can by in the market.

The service is really good, everyone is so nice & the curry hits for anyone who lived in Japan before. I tear up the triple seafood curry every time.

As a former resident of Japan, this curry really hit the spot. I was surprised how crowded it was when we arrived around 6:30 on a Sunday night, but it was worth the wait. Ordered at kiosks and waited for our names to be called. Ordered to-go. It took a really long time for our food to be ready and there were lots of other people waiting outside as well. Lots of toppings and sides to choose from. Spicy really does mean spicy at this place, so choose wisely. So happy to have found a CoCo’s curry in San Diego. So good!

Just the very best, most delicious, ultimately scrumptious curry on the planet! We live over 5 hours away but when we're in San Diego we definitely stop by for curry and a cutlet (my wife likes the vegetables). If you love Japanese curry, come here. If you haven't yet tried really good Japanese curry, come here! Try it normal first, then adjust spice to taste. It's so good. Enjoy!

I'm so pleased. Delicious spicy curry, nicely presented and tastes great. Very neat and tidy dining area and restroom. I liked their Japanese playlist. Well done.

As a long-time fan of Japanese curry, I was thrilled to finally visit a Curry House CoCo Ichibanya – my first time at this particular chain, though I'm no stranger to the style, having frequented a beloved (and now sadly closed) Curry House in Westwood pre-pandemic. I was so happy to find the menus quite similar, with all my old favorites present and accounted for! We started with the Garlic Cheese Naan, which was absolutely delicious fresh and hot, though it did lose a bit of its magic as it cooled – so definitely enjoy it quickly! It was also my boyfriend's very first foray into Japanese curry, and I'm happy to report he absolutely loved it. He opted for the spicy teriyaki fried chicken, while I indulged in my classic chicken cutlet. Both dishes were just as rich and flavorful as I remembered, hitting all the right notes of comforting deliciousness. My only minor disappointment was that they were out of iced coffee, which would have been a perfect complement. Nevertheless, the overall experience was fantastic, and I'm already planning my next visit to have my old favorite, the keema curry! I'll definitely be back when I'm in San Diego.

Been here so many times, and I like coming here. I like the choices of the curry, the mix and match, and the spice level. Decent large size serving for quite the price of the food. Honestly, I think the inside is a little too crowded the way the tables are set up but I don’t mind. I come here for the Japanese curry. Friendly staff and good service. They get super busy at times and line starts forming outside. Parking gets very difficult since it’s also located in a busy commercial area. But will definitely recommend.

Visiting Coco’s always feels like I just teleported back to Japan! The staff is always so friendly and the service is fast! We had the chicken and pork cutlet dishes and a side of French fries. Pro tip, the curry makes the perfect dipping sauce for the fries!

My boyfriend and I, along with our three friends, have been regulars for a while. We used to come in the mornings, but recently switched to dinner after noticing the chicken is often chewier early in the day—our theory is the oil isn’t fully heated right after opening. In the evenings, everything's cooked perfectly, and the vibe is just as inviting. Here’s a quick rundown of our latest dinner picks: * Chicken Curry with Spinach and Mushrooms – 4.8/5
The chicken was mostly tender, though one slice was a bit chewy. The spinach was fresh and flavorful, and the mushrooms were perfectly soft. * Chicken Curry with Vegetable Croquettes (2) – 4/5
Absolute standout! The croquettes were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside—delicious and satisfying. * Garlic Naan – 4/5
We love the flavor, but it arrived a bit too early and got cold before the rest of our food came. If it had been timed better, this easily would’ve been a 5. * Chicken Curry with Thin-Sliced Beef – 4.5/5
Surprisingly juicy! The thin beef slices held their own and added a rich, savory layer to the curry.

A friend recommended this place to me, and I'm so glad they did! I really appreciate the variety on the menu, offering plenty of different options to mix and match. The curry was delicious with the option to customize the spiciness to your taste. The server was attentive, taking note of my special requests and fulfilling them perfectly. I'll definitely be coming back. Parking is ample during off-peak hours but can be challenging during meal times.

Great restaurant branch where the curry tastes almost exactly like the CoCo Ichibanya branch in Yokodika, Japan (read: it's good!) The service is fast and friendly, despite the fact that the place was crowded, even during lunch on a week day. We were in line before it opened, and the place filled up within five minutes of opening. For those unfamiliar with dining at CoCo, you choose the type of curry from the menu, indicate the amount of rice, and choose your spiciness. I would equate a "regular" spice level as similar with a mild/medium salsa. For those who want some kick, I would recommend a 1 or 2 level. I don't remember many people when I was stationed in Japan ordering anything over a level 4 or 5. The levels here go to 20, so I guess if you're adventurous you can try to go for it. Definitely recommend the chicken or pork cutlet curries, the udon, and definitely ordering some naan bread to accompany your curry dish and to get all that curry left on your plate. A bit with the family, and definitely coming back!

This spot offers great value, with most curries priced between $13-18. I went for the build-your-own curry, where you can customize the rice, spice level, and ingredients. My friend chose the pork cutlet vegetable curry, which came with crispy pork, potatoes, and peppers. I didn’t expect much since it’s a chain, but I was pleasantly surprised! The curry was flavorful and the portions were generous—neither of us could finish our rice. My friend, who doesn’t like strong spices, found the flavor just right—not as overpowering as Indian curry. Overall, it's tasty and worth a try, especially for the price!

What can I say about this place? When my cousin recommended it, I was skeptical about the taste since most Japanese cuisine I've tried tends to be on the sweeter side. However, after dining here and trying some of their top menu items, I was blown away by how good everything tasted. This spot also serves some incredible Indian dishes! If you're craving savory food, this is the best place to try. Reservations are recommended because it gets busy quickly.

Chicken Cutlass with Curry at its finest! This place always has consistently good food that warms the soul and puts a smile on your face! Highly recommend to all spicy food lovers, challenge yourself and get a heat level higher than 6!!

Coco Curry House is one of those hit-or-miss spots. Unfortunately, consistency just isn't their strong suit. I always order the same exact dish, yet somehow it tastes different every time sometimes the spice level is spot on, other times it's either barely spicy or way too intense. This would make sense if I was switching up the spice level with each visit, but I'm not, I always order the same. Another issue is the add-ons. I typically ask for cheese, get charged for it, but half the time it's missing from the order entirely. And good luck trying to place a phone order. Even when the place is empty, they won't answer. Today was a perfect example, I called several times, no answer. I show up in person and there's only two couples dining. Definitely not slammed, so I'm not sure if ignoring phone orders is a new policy or just poor service. I really want to love this place because the food can be good... when it's right. But the inconsistency and lack of reliability make it hard to count on.

So my kiddos love this place but again everyone has different likes and dislikes. This was definitely not the place for me or my partner. Food was so so but I’ve had better tasting curry. Japanese style curry is said to be sweeter and not as spicy. This curry can not be described as sweeter or flavorful for that matter. I’ll stick to my Thai curry. Also the teriyaki fried chicken had this weird taste I didn’t care for. It was overpoweringly sweet and nothing else. Not to brag but my teriyaki tastes better and that’s not just me saying so. I’ve made it for snack bar during my kiddos high school years during the band events his school sponsored and for my other kiddos swim meets at Mt. SAC (2 day events- (sold out- over 100 teriyaki chicken bowls during every event).I’ve had people ask if it was store bought, nope I make it myself. My partner and I will definitely not come back, my kiddos will come again but closer to home. As always you’ll need to try it out for yourself. Who knows—- you may love it or say no thank you 🙂‍↔️ We ordered: chicken cutlet with side of dumplings, pork cutlet with dumplings, side of veggies in curry (mostly potatoes), side of cutlet, green salad, and 2 cutlet salads but only one came but charged for both. Drinks: Thai tea which needed some work- not sweet on the bland side. Didn’t take photos of the food. So sorry 😞 Just an FYI: if you have pork allergies- make sure to ask if there is any cross contamination. I had an allergic reaction about 20 minutes after eating my “none” pork meal.

We’ve been loyal Coco Ichibanya customers for a long time and usually dine in about once a week, which is why this is especially disappointing. Recently, we’ve noticed a consistent drop in both quality and portion size when ordering takeout, compared to dining in. This time, the curry portion was noticeably much smaller than what is normally served in-restaurant (photos attached for reference). The meat in my order also tasted overly batter-heavy, undercooked, and stale, which made it really unpleasant to eat. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time we’ve experienced this with takeout. On top of that, the customer service has been frustrating. There is a younger female staff member who is often at the counter, and every time she handles our order, the experience is negative. For example, we once ordered pickup and waited over 30 minutes past the quoted time, and despite clearly seeing us waiting, she never acknowledged us or gave an update. Her attitude has consistently come across as dismissive and rude. We don’t like leaving negative reviews, especially for a place we genuinely enjoy and support regularly. However, it’s upsetting to feel like takeout customers are treated differently — both in food quality and service. We’re hoping management sees this and addresses the inconsistency, because we want to continue supporting this location.
