OMG!! Amazing. Delicious. Impossible to finish! Taste and flavor are on point. This is our first time here and we enjoyed it very much. Will definitely come back for more. Thank you to the lady who helped us and provided such kind service! 🤤🤗😁👍🏾
Prices went up so it's $13.90 for a carne asada plate with tax. Very tasty and you fast cooking time. Waited less than 5 min at 12:00p on Saturday. Their flour tortilla was fantastic. Ordered the 4 carne asada plate.
California burrito was huge, high quality and delicious. Good quality tortilla. Crispy fries. Generous portions of well seasoned carne asada and fresh guacamole. Fast, friendly service. Fresh, free chips and salsa bar. Reasonable prices. Recommended!

Nice fast food restaurants, good seating and pleasant staff. Food is good fair prices.
Good price, good food, great salsa, friendly staff
The best taco shop around clairmont mesa and trust me really good food
The corn tastes like CORNBREAD 😩🙌🏽🤟🏽. The service was great ✊🏽🙏🏽.
Great Mexican food and fast service. Salsa bar includes three salsas, pico de gallo, limes and much more. The facilities are very clean and the service is very friendly.
The Don Nono burrito with steak is the best! Relaxed atmosphere and great staff. Shopping is only a few steps away too.
If you like a crispy authentic beef taco then this is your new place. Something about the extra cheese you get puts this taco ahead of many Mexican restaurants in San Diego
Love the Don Nono burrito here! Way better carne asada than Vallarta's. If you're in the area, definitely give them a try!
Food is excellent, place is very clean, and the staff is wonderful!
I absolutely love thier breakfast omelet's 😋 I'm hooked 💯
Great food. Fast service. Very kind people. The caldo de res is absolutely authentic.
Great food, good help. We brought home enough for 2 more meals. We will go back.
Food here is consistently good. The staff are friendly. It is our go to Mexican place for lunch in Clairemont.
The service is great ✊🏽 the food is dope especially that CORN it tastes like CORNBREAD 😩🙌🏽🤟🏽.
Very tasty food. Good serve amount of food.
The Carne Asada Plate was delicious and very inexpensive. I'm impressed and will eat here again.
Great food! Customer service is good too! I recommend carne asada plate, burritos.
I really enjoy their shrimp burritos and potato tacos. A bit pricey but what's new lol.
Clean, nice salsa bad, employees helpful and friendly, parking was easy, large menu, enjoyed my burrito
Their fish tacos, carne asada burrito, surf and turf, machaca burrito taste so good and great service.
Best service and clean restaurants... Try the Chorizo Torta great tasting really good flavor.
The Grande breakfast burrito is amazing but make sure you have help to eat it... It truly is grand!
Great! I passed by with my cousins while we were leaving Sea World. There was almost no waiting time.
The food is always fantastic and taste so good. It is a place you must try and it its cheap!
Great Mex Fish Taco, Hugh 2 corn tortillas plus tasty salsa bar. Fast service Plus as many chips on the side as you can eat no charge....
This place is legit. I highly recommend two things. Their incredible salads, and their burritos. I am a San Diego burrito connoisseur and I really do like their carne asada.
My wife and I had the chicken and spinach enchiladas, I included rice and beans with my meal. Food was well prepared and tasted great. The restaurant was clean also
These guys are super cool. It took them longer to put my order together today, so they gave me almost twice as much food. Awesome customer service 😄
One of my favorite Tacos in San Diego. The Carn Asada tacos are fantastic, freshly made to order. (So good) I also really like their salsa bar, you can tell they make it fresh day. Highly recommended by an “amateur” Mexican food eater. :)
Love this restaurant, especially the spinach enchiladas, carna asada California burritos, and the garlic shrimp plate. Veggie grilled burrito is really good, don't forget the nopales (cactus) burrito and ask for the FLAN for dessert... delicious
Our El Portal is at the corner of Mt. Alifan and Genesee. We are especially partial to their California Burritos in beef or chicken. They are the only burrito I know of with French Fries inside. El Portal has another store off of Mission Valley Road. It catches all the lunch crowd because El Portal doesn't know how to make bad food. Everything tastes amazing.
I have two Mexican restaurants closer to my house and I drive out of my way to come to this place. The food here is a lot better quality and the staff are very friendly. My food was ready in minutes and was perfect.
Nice staff members that speak English and Spanish. Great food with just about any selection. I enjoy the Carne asada plate with flour tortillas just about every time I come here. There is a sit down tables and a booth section. Selection of Horchata, and other flavorful drinks from the soda machine.
Great customer service. The red hot sauce is the perfect combination of hot and flavorful. The beans are well seasoned. Definitely worth the drive!
Bacon breakfast burrito is off the charts good. The salsa that have is also super good. And finally, they serve chips with your order. Trifecta good Mexican food experience.
When my husband and I cannot decide a place to go eat then we always settle for El Portal. Food is always good, great customer service, and very fast service. The price is very reasonable as well.
I have been going here for many years and have been never disappointed by a meal there, staff is great and the food is better. I can’t speak highly enough of this place. I recommend it to anyone looking for a great lunch.
Always fresh and delicious. Love their spinach enchiladas and have them often. This is not your typical mushy bean and dry rice Mexican restaurant.
Best black bean and cheese burrito ever with lettuce and pico de gallo!! Always hits
Tasty and large portions. Staff were very nice and helpful with our menu questions. Green sauce was delicious!
1st time eating here. This casual place really hit the spot. Food was delicious, big portions, good prices. Cashier was nice and informative. Food came out quickly, and neither of us could finish our meal. Also plenty of parking, which is always a plus in my book!
I striped the parking lot for this shopping center. Every day I worked there I ate lunch. Sometimes lunch and breakfast it was that good. They have good size portions and fair prices. Their meat is so tender and marinated/cooked to perfection. All meat with zero fat and gristly pieces unlike alot of taco shops. Not only is the meat to die for but they have great breakfast burritos too. Nice, clean, friendly environment and a very curtiouse, polite and welcoming staff. I highly recommend this place and will eat there anytime I'm in the area....
My absolute favorite Mexican restaurant. While I lived in San Diego I went here at least twice a week. The wait was never longer than five minutes and the food was very fresh. The portions were massive. I recommend any of the burritos or an order of carne asada fries. Being able to load up on as much salsa as you'd like at the salsa bar is also handy.
Lived in Clairemont for 2 years and I don’t know why I’ve never been here! Went the other day and it was sooo good! Definitely get the fish burrito next time you go! Much better than the other Mexican food over here, they definitely need a drive through ;)
My first visit. Really impressed with the tasty flavor of authentic Mexican food. This is going to be my favorite place to eat from now on. They are very friendly and the place is very clean. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ordered the two enchiladas combo (one chicken one beef) and a Don Nono both were good. I think I rank the carne asada here better than Cotixan but not as good as Vallarta. I might have been starving but the enchiladas were excellent to me. The beans and rice we the standard Mexican fair and it was good. The Corn cake was interesting and sweet, worth trying. The Horchata was just fine. I think the big benefits to this place over Vallarta is there is a place to sit indoors, plenty of parking, and not a mass of people, making it a good alternative. Someone else was commenting the staff is always mopping the floor and I think that is actually valid, that happened to me too. I would rather they mop after they close (well, unless there is a spill or something).
Went to El Portal for lunch as it was convenient. Menu is large with a number of great sounding offerings. Ordered three tacos, chicken asado, steak asado, and carnitas. All three were great and authentic tasting, aka not tex-mex. Salsa were great tasting and overall portions were on point. Great overall lunch spot with quick service.

Had the fish burrito, little bit pricey but not bad. Good salsa
They definitely need to get into the app. craze. Good food but also need a full menu online.
I ordered a taco dorado and Potatoe Rolled Tacos. I must say they were Delicious specially the TACO DORADO. Very clean and chill place to eat at. Customer service was awesome as well.
Good food and quick service, one of my favorites, prices are typical for the amount of food you receive, Carne asada is always good here. Would recommend
Food was ok! Service was ok! Nothing too spectacular. But I did really like the hot sauces. Great flavor.
Good food I enjoyed it but sometimes it's pretty eh
Nice authentic Mexican establishment food was prepared and presented well, enjoyable experience would stop again.
Seevice is fast the food is very good. The chicken fajitas that I ordered were very generous. One thing that stood out was the bag of "totopos" (torrilla chips) that were included with my order, most places charge you extra for that. I was also surprised that my order came with 4 tortillas everey other spot usually gives 3 tortillas or less per order and I got 4 with my order and that was awesome. The only thing I believe needs to improve is their salsas.
Very bland chorizo burrito. Mainly egg. Burnt egg at that. Had to use salsa for the entire burrito to give it flavor. I would've sent it back but I'm on a crunch for time for my 30min lunch. I usually enjoy their food. Just not this time. Especially for $9.
We were back visiting this being one of our old haunts and frequent stops. We had been gone for 5 years and this still is a very clean and friendly place to eat.
Our family has been eating at this place for more than five years. We like the carnitas burritos, enchiladas and carne asada fries. They are quick on the to go orders.
Free reasons why I've been eating here for the last 8 years: 1). This eaterie consistently has carne asada that is moist, seasoned and not chewey. 2). Grilled chicken enchiladas 3). A side bag of fresh and crisp tortilla chips is served with each order, not just a meal I ate the food too fast to take a picture, :(

The food was good, but the reason for the 3 stars is because the manager and employee where more into their conversation as i walkted out then saying thank you. I say thank you and just ignore me.
Omelette, potatoes and beans are plain if your into that... No flavor. Customer service and facility are great.
Mostly good. My husband liked his con carne burrito, but my shredded beef tasted very salty and I couldn't finish it. Friendly staff. Large portions, and price reasonable.
The staff is friendly, the service is quick, and the restaurant is clean. We had carne asada, chorizo, and menudo. They were all BLAND. Even after I added the fresh cilantro, onion, and oregano the soup was BLAND. This is a nice restaurant but I'm not coming back until they spice up their cooking.
They offer a veggie fajitas plate, but the veggies are cooked on the same grill as the carne and other meats. They have delicious salsas. It is hard to eat as gluten free and vegan, but their choices include black beans and their rice. It is more expensive to order two small sides of rice and beans with corn tortillas than it is for a bean and cheese burrito.
Sweet corn cake is amazing! There was confusion about being charged, and my cheese wasn't melted in my enchiladas but tasty
Carne asada is pre cooked and not fresh. I ordered a California burrito and was super disappointed. If you're a Mexican food connoisseur like me then don't waste your time and money here.
Ordered a carne asada burrito. It cost over $10 and was about six bites. After cutting the burrito in half and seeing what $5 and some change gets you, I wasn’t impressed. The green sauce was tangy and not hot. Red sauce was mild, I usually eat the green sauce but here I used the red. The young man working behind the counter was nice and easy going as we talked tacos.
It seems their food quality had gone down to me. The quesadilla was so greasy and icky. The cashier mopped the floor with acrid solvent while we were eating, instead of waiting. I won't be back.
This place used to be me and my family's go to Mexican restaurant. For whatever reason we haven't been as often in the last several years. I think this was the first time I've been there in about 2. And the food was just okay. Maybe the cooks changed. Maybe the owners changed. But whatever it is, the food isn't quite as good as it used to be. And you can tell because their restaurant was absolutely empty aside from me. There's just so many other good options out there. The service was good though, the person at the counter was nice and the food was served hot and fresh. And I do like the layout of the place. I hope they can figure it out.
This establishment appears to be void of any patrons throughout the day, there’s barely any seating inside, and conditions aren’t the cleanest. A veggie burrito with a small fountain soda to-go runs will cost you $15. Sadly, there are simply too many better shops in the area for anyone to settle for El Portal.
I tried this place for the first time tonight. I got a fish taco and black beans and they were pretty good. The vibe definitely does not match the food though and that’s the only reason I’m only giving this three stars. They need to make it a more lively place by redoing the old looking interior and having some music on. Just make it a more authentic, cultural vibe. And add more tables inside.

Giving two stars only because the lady at the register was very friendly and accommodating. The food however was one star. I ordered the chargrilled fish tacos after I was told they are mahi-mahi. At $6.60 each, I definitely paid a mahi mahi price too. When I got the tacos home however, I could barely taste the fish in the first taco so I decided to take the others apart to see what was actually in it. To my dismay as a self respecting pescatarian, they gave me tilapia. That is straight up food fraud. If you’re out of mahi-mahi just say that you’re out of it. Don’t sub tilapia and charge the premium price while lying to the customer. Won’t be returning.
Rice was super over cooked. Beans did not have a lot of flavor. The guy on the register clearly had no interest of being there.

Ordered menudo...not as good as it used to be. Hardly any hominy...lots of menudo meat.
Fish Taco -The meat was hard like chicharron, I couldn't tear it apart.
I liked their food but just got tired of our orders always being messed up. We’d been going here for a while and it was great, but recently they just can’t get the takeout orders right. They’ve left off sides, made combo orders into regular, or both. We called several times about it but it never fixed anything—I think they got 1 out of the last 7 orders right.
This place used to be very good! I went in there for Machaca and eggs. They used to have a salsa bar with chips that is not working anymore. When I got my order I was disappointed! The rice was undercooked and the machaca with eggs was mostly eggs, o lot of eggs overcooked, hardly any meat!! While I was eating a couple of people that wanted to order walked away because there was no one at the counter for a while. I hope this place goes back to what it used to be! With great attention and a nice standard.
This place used to be the best Mexican in the Clairemont area. The first mistake they made was changing their hot salsa recipe. They had the best tasting hot salsa in San Diego. About 2 years ago they changed it, now it’s just average. The customer service has gone down too. I went there today and had to practically beg for hot sauce, I know I use a lot! Couldn’t figure out the order either, and then were really rude. Really miss what this place was, but I’ll go to their other, place el cotixan, which was my second favorite salsa and now moved to first.
This used to be a good restaurant that we've been patronizing for years. Now the food is so inconsistent that we will not go any longer. Ordering a Machaca burrito will get you either all egg and no meat or mostly meat but not a blend of both or much in the way of cheese, peppers or anything else. Huevos Rancheros is a scant resemblance of what it used to be. The eggs are hard instead of over easy and the smallest eggs you've ever seen. They no longer have a salsa bar even though Covid has been a past memory for quite some time. If you want more than two salsa containers, they begrudgingly provide it making you feel as though you're not entitled. Prices are much higher and I don't mind paying a higher price but the quality needs to be equal to the price. If this restaurant wants to survive the post Covid era they need to get back to the value and service that they once had.
Counter person was less than helpful and slightly on the ride rude side. I won't return. And the enchiladas are no good. Over priced. Rice is poop. Beans too. Sorry. Except I'm the one that just threw my money in the garbage.... along with my lunch.

Staff is very, very nice and accommodating to requests for more salsa. That's all this place has going for it though. The nachos El Portal are a gigantic pile of chips (some tasted like old oil) with a sprinkle of flavorless carne asada. The carne asada was soft, but had no flavor whatsoever. They're covered in about 1 pound of shredded cheese and tasteless sour cream. Tried to fix the meal by adding salsa (green and red) and salt. That was disappointing. The salsas have no flavor either and all they accomplished was making my food look colorful. No, the visual appeal did not make up for the tastelessness of the meal. The potato rolled tacos would have been tasty had they been seasoned and not covered in 5 pounds of shredded cheese and coarsely chopped iceberg lettuce. The tortillas also tasted like they'd been fried in old oil and the amount of potatoes actually in the taco is laughable at best. Their dining area has giant roll up hangar windows which is lovely if you like eating and swatting flies away in-between each bite of the underwhelming food. If you want delicious Mexican food, there are much better options in this are that are only a few minutes down the street.
The burrito tastes like cabbage and tortilla there is no other flavor, terribly disappointed with this place

Unfriendly staff and food not very good. The big bugs in restroom weren't friendly either.
Usually great food come here all the time, got rolled tacos for 7.06 paid with a 20, received 2.94 back and she insisted that I paid with a 10. And was RUDE throughout.
Carne Asada Tostada filling contains less meat filling than a taco. All bread that is hard to chew
Will not be back. Want to charge fees for using credit or debit. Will use restaurants that do not penalize for credit.
They are getting worst and worst every time.i order a very expensive CARNE asada fries that had no Carne (meat) just barely as you can see in the pic. Compared to Lolitas, bronco, cotixan and many others this people from El portal Mexican grill are cheap. My wife asked for an extra dressing for her salad and the lady said NO you have to pay extra even do that the salad was poor too compared than before when they use to be pure quality and you enjoy going to eat there no matter if it was expensive. The ladies there talk to you like they are giving you for free the food and they act like the owners.
Okay so first warning in mexican food restaurants is if you smell nothing when you walk in. I ignored this and got what i deserved. The veggie burrito surprised me with zero flavor except one sour flavor i could not identify. I thought loading it with salsa would help. It did not help. I'm not going to go to far on with this. Just be warned.
I order beef soup to go ($9.95)and I got a big piece of cauliflower, one big potato and two tiny pieces of beef I felt abuse when I got home and noticed. The same with menudo soup they filled my order with grains.few pieces of meet. This is an ABUSE,ROBERY The owner needs to have an open email for this kind of matters By the way this happen at the genesee location , Oct 27 around 4.40 P.M. Thank you for reading
Stay away from this place. Ate half of a carnitas plate and not even 1hr later I’m throwing up. The food itself was bland, basically no flavor or condiments and tasted a bit old. Avoid this place.
Well, the place was freezing! Probably the coldest indoor place I have ever eaten. Absolutely NO heat and in the winter! My “fish” taco had a rubbery piece of fish that was flat, the size of a graham cracker, no kidding! I asked for a side of beans to compensate for the lack of fish in the taco. The employee seemed surprised but complied with my request. I didn’t even finish the taco. Then an employee came out in the dining area to eat on his break and was listening to something on his phone so loudly that we had to ask him to turn it down. I would give an overall ZERO if possible.
I completely understand why this restaurant is empty. THE FOOD SUCKS. The least you can do is check the quality of your proteins. Rancid carne asada? Shrimp that is fishier than the ocean? Save your money and time and find a new spot.
Asked for a classico burrito with light beans and rice and more carne asada if possible. Got a burrito with very little carne asada and lots of rice and beans. I asked if they could redo it as I really didn't want a rice and bean burrito, and I will pay the difference of the carne asada burrito which was like $2 and they said I had to pay $12 more for a brand new burrito and they wouldn't redo my burrito. I've never ever had such poor customer service. Never going back here.
A couple of weeks ago I went in and ordered a works burrito, it was not good at all & I ended up getting sick from it. Yesterday I decided to give it another shot thinking maybe it was something else I had ate. I went in to get a California burrito & all I got really was guacamole & fries with little to no carne asada in it. Something in it wasn't properly cooked or just had old products in it. I got so sick after eating at this place i puke my guts out all night. The establishment it's self is pretty filthy & the employees are pretty rude.
Got carnitas plate and fish taco plate. The fish and meat were old, it seemed reheated or something. We should have walked out when we noticed we were the only ones in there. Will never come here again.
I used to come here a lot, but then my orders kept getting messed up. After a few years. My friend and I in order super nachos, a salad, and a fish burrito. They didn’t give us a chip so we had to ask for them even though they come with the meal, the super nachos that my friend bought were but she ate them anyway. The biggest problem was the fish burrito as it was not only cold, but the fish was dark and old when we called, everyone pretended not to speak English, and then we came in they practically threw the receipt back. My mom said they wouldn’t replace it. They wouldn’t give us the money back and would only thing replace was the fish burrito . They had a massive attitude, a very bad attitude and this is the last time we’re coming. I told him that I was going to give them a bad review.
Walked in on Sunday 08/25/24 the at 7:30pm The cashier told me and my family that we can only order to go and there was only one table out side therefore no where to sit because there were customers there which they said he said the same thing to them. It’s obviously they were more in hurry to close the restaurant than receive business. We felt uncomfortable so we left. The crazy thing is it’s been years since I’ve given this place another try and the one time I do this happens.
