Cute little old school breakfast spot. The Ham and eggs plate with side of pancakes was good. The slice of ham was thick and perfectly cooked.
I was finally able to try this place for the first time this morning after several months of knowing of it's existence. I love local diner spots and try to find one wherever I go someplace new. My thoughts of this place were all incredible. Nice location, local area, old school look, and last but not least, incredible food. The menu is small, but has anything a home style classic diner has to offer. The servers were attentive, generous, and kind. The inside dining area is also small in space, but I loved it because it added to that local and loved diner feel. When the food came around, a classic plate of Pancakes, eggs, bacon and hash brown has had to have been one of the best I have ever had. Generous portion size, incredibly well prepared, and enough to have left me feel like I was filled for hours. This diner is well worth the visit if you want a classic breakfast. I will be returning soon!
Went there with my mom she said it's been there since the 80s bomb bomb food 🤤
its been 25 years since I was there. the pictures look like nothing has changed. can't wait for the next opportunity to visit the city. i will make sure I get by. after the awesome breakfast, a short walk down to the park for a short walk around the circle to settle that fine meal.
Awesome little spot! It's a smaller diner, so seating can be limited. Service was excellent, and the pricing was relatively cheap compared to other spots in San Diego. The food was bomb. I had a ham and cheese omelet with pancakes. The omelet tasted fresh while the pancakes definitely had some love added. The experience felt like breakfast and hugs, just the way grandma used to... minus the hugs of course. Overall, i'd vote for Golden Hill Cafe in 2024.
Was going for years until I moved away from Cali. Went back for a visit and had to eat here. Great food, service
Always delicious food. Quick and attentive service.
We are from out of town and happened to walk by on our way to Panchita's bakery. We decided to stop in for a late breakfast and this place did not disappoint. We love Hispanic food and where we are from it is hard to find a good Hispanic breakfast. The food is not overly complicated. Simple and delicious. We plan on stopping in again before we leave. Good food. Good service. Family owned. Good prices.
Cozy atmosphere and fantastic breakfast! The staff was friendly and attentive and the ham & cheese omelette with hash browns was cooked to perfection; fluffy eggs, tasty ham chunks and slightly crunchy potatoes. Looking forward to my next visit to SD so I can visit here again.
Golden Hill Cafe did not skip a beat. They are fully open and food is just as good. I noticed they change their coffee cups. They are bigger!! And I didnt need a refill, just the perfect amount to finish your food. Prices did go up a bit, as expected, but its within reason. Outside dinning tables are bigger and more of them. Parking is still bad, not many spots, it took me about 2 turns around the block to find parking.
We love this cute breakfast cafe. Usually we order eggs, pancakes or French toast and hash browns. The waitresses are so sweet and attentive. Also the price is perfect, about $7 for breakfast and coffee not including tip. Tip these ladies & men generously
Small, cozy, greasy spoon atmosphere. This place is a legend in golden hill for soaking up a lot of the damage that the turf club did the evening before. Really basic but delicious food. Love the nostalgia that's invoked.
I love this place. All breakfast arr so good, the service always is incredible. I love the retro vibes of this restaurant.
Always busy here love the place they know me pretty well here definatly worth the wait which is ne er that long you become friends with the staff here
Cute and cozy diner to bring a book and eat breakfast at. Staff are friendly and food tastes good. I got the farmers mix, biscuits and gravy were so comforting.
A small cafe serving delicious American and Mexican breakfast at very reasonable prices. The place has been around for years, but is kept up well. You can tell from the clean and free-flowing salt and pepper shakers and the sugar dispensers. The pancakes and French toast portions are generous. They are very good, fluffy and with lots of egg batter. The hash browns look the same as those from anywhere else, but the brown portions are very, very crispy while the white parts are fresh. They are the best I’ve tasted for a long time. Yum!
Great spot for Mexican breakfast! The service is so incredibly fast and we didn’t have to wait for a seat in the morning. The prices are reasonable and the food is authentic. It’s not a fancy place but perfect for a quick bite to eat. I really enjoyed the hash browns.
Went here 5 days in a row! Pancakes, French toast, California turkey melt - everything has been great! Update - been here almost everyday we've been in San Diego! Super fresh, great staff, cool little cafe!
We were leaving San Diego and wanted to get some breakfast before we left. And so we decided on Golden Hill Cafe. This Cafe is very small with a kitchen, a small counter, and some booths and that's it. But what they lack in size they make up for with their hospitality. We were welcomed in and seated promptly. We ordered coffee which was perfectly brewed. We decided to share the Chorizo plate which was very delicious. I loved the refried beans. They were freshly made and reminded me of my Nana and how she made her beans. We made a great decision eating here and look forward to our next SD visit. We will definitely return to Golden Hill Cafe.
Classic diner located in Golden Hill. Had my favorite breakfast Eggs Benedict.. it was well done. Plenty of sauce, eggs were poached just right and the hashbrowns were crispy. Ate outside and had good service. Prices were very affordable. I'll be back for another round!
Nestled in old Golden Hill, this little gem is more of a locals breakfast spot. Sundays are very busy and you can expect a wait of about 10 or so minutes. Prices are good. Food quality is good (I’ve seen them bringing in fresh food daily) and the views from the tall glass windows is excellent. The Chilaquiles are what most people come for here, I highly recommend it. Fun fact: this diner was also in a movie called K9. Over all a great place to bring a family after church or an outing. Pictured here is what I ordered and I typically take half home - a bacon omelette, hash browns and toast, ordered with a bottomless coffee - 20.36. A very good deal in San Diego.
Quick to be seated, order, and get food. Staff was friendly, area was clean, omelet was delicious, covered in melted cheese, with soft chilies and mushrooms, complimented by crispy hashbrowns.
I always come here when im craving a good breakfast and some good chilaquiles!!!! The customer service is awesome, they are always taking care of you, and their super nice. I have been coming to this place since I can remeber, its a family run buisness which makes it even better.

Great breakfast spot. Especially if you run into local OF star jolene brody/lauren driskell. You cant miss her. Long red hair, tattoos, etc. If she's here, she's usually interviewing guys to work with.
Best French toast I ever had very pricey for one plate one drink it’s about $25 dollars not including the tip

Simple, good food in a retro style setting. It was definitely good, not expensive & the service from all the staff was friendly & fast! Made you feel right at home. Go here & support this business!
Golden Hill Cafe is a nice, small diner. Seating is limited and the space is quite small. It is very much home style from the size, decor, and even staffing. The food is good and the prices are okay. The food is inline with current prices. $4.50 for drip coffee for perspective. You are getting enough food to get yourself to full without having to worry about overindulging. Overall I liked Golden Hill Cafe but didn't think it was anything amazing. I would probably come again but that's because it is within such close proximity to me.
This is a simple, down-to-earth, no frills diner. Their menu is short and sweet. The staff is friendly and attentive. It's a bit small, but that adds to its homely charm. Prices are fair. Pictures is the tuna melt, hotcakes platter, and chilaquiles.

My family and I (3 people or rarely 4) come to have breakfast here weekly. We get seated immediately, the staff are very friendly, they’re quick when it’s not as crowded. The silverware, I noticed that they weren’t being washed properly. For example, in between the forks, I noticed there was dry food stuck. Also, the cups were stained of coffee or other dry foods. Including, I ordered an orange juice once & the orange juice had no flavor, just pure water as well as once when I ordered a hot coffee, to me, it tasted like tea. I thought I was losing my mind but I insisted my sister to try it & she said it did taste like tea inside of coffee. The pancakes have a lot of butter but they’re very delicious and fluffy (order them without butter) there’s a lot of foods that they serve that have lots of butter.
Great corner Cafe to grab breakfast. Friendly, attentive wait staff, with good food. The diner style seats add to the charm. If you are looking to support local business's stop in, you won't be disappointed

Menu was pretty simple greasy spoon. I like that they are staying true to their style but a few things that really didn't help: - No changes to the menu items - Staff didn't speak much English and just ignored questions when they didn't understand. - The pancakes were chewy and had no flavor, even our 2yr wouldn't eat them. - they have nothing fresh on the menu...fruit for example. - coffee was basically just water and milk was sitting out long before we got there.
The service was really good and quick but the food was not the best. The chilaquiles salsa was that tomato pre-made salsa and not authentic. The french toast was too eggy.
I had the privilege of "eating" the Mexican omelette and the French toast as a little side dish. The omelette came out to be just scrambled eggs and the most redeeming quality would probably be the beans and the flour tortillas. The French toast made up for the scrambled eggs though. Butter and syrup made up for the French toast was quite scrumptious. Service was okay. We sat outside so no complaints and the wait was only about 10 minutes on a 11am Sunday. Unfortunately, after our table was set up and we sat down, we had to get our own menus to start our order. We had a large group (6), but the food took about 30 minutes to come out. Atmosphere was nice though. Personally I'd rename it from Golden Hill to Silver Hill because Big Kitchen will still be number 1 for a better breakfast.
So this place has been around for a while and I love how old it is the food really isn't worth the price. Sadly it's just below mediocre. The breakfast is decent but today I ordered a BLT and they gave me what looked like 2 and half strips of bacon. They didn't seem to even put an effort into the sandwich itself.... it was just bland and sloppy. Those place has such good potential to be a really good diner/cafe but I have seriously been to way better ones than this. The owners might want to rethink the quality of food here and maybe spruce up the place a bit more.... an upgrade on this place would do it some good. A place like this shouldn't go to waste. As a the service, the first time we went here [and forgive me for how I'm about to describe her] we had the older white lady with the blondish hair was great and attentive. Other servers were ok. Don't take this completely negative after all this is just my opinion.
Usually the service is good, but today it was awful. We arrived after a big family, and after us more people came in. We placed our order only to be forgotten about. Everyone else was served first but us, even asking us what we had ordered again. If they can’t handle big crowds, then I’ll just go to the NATIONAL CITY Aunt Emma’s. Great food there and service is fast regardless Of big crowds
I was surprised by how bad was the customer service. The staff does not practice making sure their customer is happy and satisfied, i felt like i had to apologize for being there as that gave them more work to do. The happiness and family feel i was expected to find there, did not exist when I visited. Also kind of pricey for what it is too. Will not return.
Golden Hill Cafe had 4.4 stars on Google so I had some higher expectations before dining here for brunch on a Sunday. There was a typical Sunday brunch crowd, but they were able to seat my group of 6 quickly. They have the great option of outdoor seating, but one potential downside is you’ll be seated at plastic foldable tables. I felt like they could use some nice plastic table cloths for a better/neater/cleaner dining experience. After being seated, we had to grab menus ourselves after waiting awhile as our server had forgotten. After getting our waters, I noticed their cups looked incredibly old and foggy. I wasn’t 100% certain they were clean. I got a Farmers Mix (mixed veggy omelette + biscuits & gravy) for $17. While the dish itself was good, I was expecting a much larger serving size for the price. Presentation of the food could definitely be improved. Someone at my table ordered a California Melt and it came with a side of “veggies” which was one (1) small leaf of lettuce with 5 julienned carrot slices. It just looked… sad and measly :( All in all, maybe I’d come back when they aren’t very busy but it would take some real convincing, especially with other good breakfast options in the area.
Nice people. Cool spot. But I was disappointed. No bathroom. Needs some cleaning. Food rather basic.
This place used to be beautiful to come and eat but very sad that this place is not taken care of . The place is very dirty, everything looks dirty. Even when they bring ice they use their hands to stuff the ice down. I had beautiful memories of coming here and its sad it is so neglected. Not only dirty and not taken care of but the building inside needs attention. I hope the owner can help give care to this place , fix the parts that are falling apart, chipping of the paint etc. This is the last time I come here under these conditions.
Stopped in to the Golden Hill Cafe for breakfast, but immediately regretted it. The place smelled strongly of urine. We asked for a high chair, but every single one was covered in sticky syrup. When we mentioned it, the staff member shrugged it off and used a filthy black rag to “clean” it. At that point, we decided to leave without ordering.
The need to invest in new plates and cups. The cups are very foggy from how old they are. The coffee cups are all very different. The food is mediocre, not a lot of flavor. I tried rhis place since it was local and it seemed busy. I wouldn't go again....
This has to be the worst service ever. I arrived at the restaurant. I waited 20 minutes to be asked if I wanted to order? Then three other people arrived and they took their order before mine and they got their order before me which made me upset I was sitting there 40 mins and I was so upset so I got up and walked away. I called and then the “manager” said oh you’re the person who didn’t pay for the drinks? I replied yes and the place wasn’t busy. She started making excuses why the people got their orders before us. I will never come here again this place was the worst service ever.
Unfortunately one of the worst breakfast I have had, cold stale bacon, and hair in food
Came here 3/23 . Patricia.... A name you can't forget. Gave a terrible service. I'm not sure if she's related to the owners or knows them personally. Maybe she's a manager. Whatever the case is, she has zero customer service and satisfaction. We arrived at 12:05 and placed our order five minutes after. Well after a bunch of people came and received their food first. We started to doubt our order was even being prepared. At 12:35 I walked inside and asked, and to my surprise. Patricia never put our order in. At 12:45 we barely get our food. Keep in mind we're only 3 people. And best part .. the order was wrong. All the way till 1pm we get the check.... And Patricia slaps us in the face with a 15% off. Even the other ladies working there were trying to push for a bigger discount. One of them even said. "I wouldn't even charge them" and Patricia said... Okay give them another 5%. I gave cash Tip to the other lady. She deserved it more than Patricia. So if anyone comes to eat here. Just avoid Patricia. She screwed every table she had. Ours was just unfortunately the worst case.
Got the machaca plate and the breakfast egg, sausage, and pancakes, orange juice, coffee, and Pepsi. Total was $47. The bad: tomatoes in the machaca tasted like they were turning bad, the coffee tasted like rag water. The good: pancakes are good. Service is average. Had to repeat myself several times as the waiter doesn't write anything down. When I paid they didn't bring me my change, I literally had to ask for my change. They assumed the rest was a tip. Strange assumption. Overall below average experience.
Don’t know about all those 5 stars. People must have never eaten decent food before. From my experience few days ago, chef is lazy and all food is microwaved and canned. Chef or owner should be embarrassed serving this kind of food. Ps, there was a few of us, not just mine plate was atrocious.

We didn’t even sit down. The booth seats were dirty. Food embedded in the crevices. We asked for a high chair. It wasn’t just sticky, but there was visible dried food on it. The 2nd high chair she brought was no better. We quietly left. As we were walking out there was a waitress wiping down the high chairs with a dirty rag. I can’t comment on the food because we didn’t stay.
