Owner is a very friendly and kind man. Pho was delicious, and they catered well to my vegetarian friends needs. I would love to go back and try some more of the bakery items.
Just a glorious, delicious place. Went in on a whim after a breakfast place down the street was too busy. What a fine! Kind and charming are the best words to describe it. Very delicious food and very quick, extremely charming staff. Will visit again!
Yummy Bahn mi sandwich. Was ready quick and was able to get on with my day after this great snack. The Ramen bowls looked great as well. This spot has been a Castro mainstay for years and I just went for the first time. Very happy I finally did!
I love this place so much!!! The couple that run it are so lovely, nice and thoughtful. The food is always fresh and I love taking my daughter here. Often times I get the pho for breakfast - it's great. One of my favourite places in the city. It's also a really well priced place to get some solid food.
This place has an exceptional bahn mi sandwich. I stumbled upon it by happenstance, and was blown away by the quality of the food at a very reasonable price. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the space is simple, but clean and homey. Highly recommend getting a bahn mi here.
A great version of what it is, which is a no frills, order at the counter coffee shop...with a twist. They have decent and well priced American breakfasts and pastries plus a full menu of Vietnamese food for lunch. If you want no frills, chill, and affordable, this is a great option on Castro. Best part is the owner is super kind so it's a pleasure to support this local business.
This is one of those spots that make a neighborhood feel like home. Friendly service, delicious sandwiches (croissants for breakfast and banh mi for lunch), and the best fresh-squeezed orange juice — Castro Tarts is a real gem on Castro Street. Can’t recommend enough for locals and visitors alike ❤️
This is the kind of local neighborhood place where they remember your name and your favorite order and greet you with kindness as you enter. The Banh Mi sandwiches are excellent (I love the rosemary chicken) with amazing bread. They also have breakfast which is affordable and fast.
Service with a smile and food is always great. While most people may come here for their great pastries and coffee, they also have an amazing breakfast and lunch menu. Their pho is the best I've had anywhere and so many varieties. Also a great choice of sandwiches.
One of the most-loved little gems in Castro 🌈❤️🤩 It serves all-day American breakfast, as well as Vietnamese soup, noodle, rice dishes. As of July 2020, there are outdoor sitting area for outdoor dining and takeout services. On top of that, the friendliest owners you'll ever meet! One of locals favorites. Give it a try yourself if you are in town 🍚🍳🥓
Diverse menu. Yummy banmi sandwiches and fresh spring rolls. Sadly, no pastries right now - usually really good croissants. I've never tried the pho, but I'm told it's good. Reasonable prices. I'm so glad Castro Tarts reopened after their remodel, even though it's in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Order ahead by phone or give your order and pay at at the door. A couple of tables and chairs outside as usual. Family owned and run. Nice people!
This place is the BOMB!!! Best espresso in the neighborhood, if you ask me, AND the best pastries. They bake their pastries a LITTLE bit longer, to give them a delicious crispiness, they're just the best. The people who own and run the cafe are SO nice and friendly and professional, I adore them. The cafe is always clean, and there are two tables out on the sidewalk as well as plenty of tables indoors. It's a great place to park and read a good book with coffee & pastry or breakfast croissant, or to people watch. I don't go anywhere else anymore!
Great banh mi at a really reasonable price, the pork was especially solid, and the person who took care of us was so sweet and thoughtful. Super fast service too
My boyfriend and I came in today, visiting from Darwin, Australia (the top tip) being a gateway to south east Asia. Being blessed with a wide range of authentic and true Vietnamese flavours, I was very excited the moment I saw the place appeared to be run by local Vietnamese woman, I knew I'd be in for a good meal. 100% would recommend this cafe for great food and a great vibe. Hope to make it back before I leave tomorrow!
This place is consistently good and the owners are super friendly/nice. We used to pass by thinking it was just a Vietnamese sandwich shop (my fiance doesn't like sandwiches for some unbeknownst reason). After we realized that there were other foods, we started coming in often during the weekends for brunch (french toast, omelette with avocado and cheddar) which are amazing deals and always delicious. The omelette comes as a set with a pastry (croissant), coffee, and hash browns. Both the french toast + omelette brunch sets will run you below $20. It's probably the most affordable breakfast place in the Castro, while simultaneously being one of the higher quality places. As for the non-breakfast items, I can't review the sandwiches but we have also tried their potstickers, which come as a giant serving and are delicious.
Cozy venue where you can get delicious coffee, vietnamese specialities and daily freshly baked pastries. The staff is very and friendly and Castro Tarts seems to be a to-go place for locals. They have the perfect ingredients neeeded to make this place so charming : love and family.
The food at Castro Tarts is tasty, and the cost is below average. On top of that, everyone works here is very friendly, I've never had any bad experience. I strongly recommend this place if you are looking for some good eats in the Castro.
Great hot chocolate! Staff was super nice, and there were good seating options
They’re wonderful, friendly and quick! Fresh ingredients and casual atmosphere. Great local spot.
Amazing Bahn Mi. I loved this place so much. I have a soft spot for family run and hardworking restaurants. This is just that. They really care and you can tell. The food is amazing. The bread was so good in my bahn mi. And the meat and the proportions was *chefs kiss*. This definitely feels like a community spot and it had a homey feel. Definitely coming back!
The time I went there wasn’t that many people. Also I was impressed hot it taste and the portions of the food for the price is not too bad, the sever I talk to name Judy was very nice and polite great customer service so recommended they got bakery such as croissant, muffin and others and Vietnamese sandwich and drink like smoothie and Vietnamese coffee it was so good I was amazed for sure will go back next week or whenever I’m in that area
Such a great local spot! The owners and staff are super friendly, and there’s plenty of seating both inside and outside. They have a wide variety of food options, from classic American breakfast and fresh pastries to banh mi, gluten-free pho noodles, and amazing Vietnamese coffee to start your day. Perfect cafe to meet with friends because there’s something for everyone!
Extremely friendly owners. Great Vietnamese coffee-- both hot and iced. The bread was even more delicious than I imagined. We had sweet bbq por buns and a raisin pinwheel. Both toasted to perfection. I would come back and try other menu items, bc they will definitely be good. High quality place. Loved the art on the walls.
I was hungry and didn't have time to wait and this was a perfect place to go if u in the Castro. Ordered Ham and Egg Bagel, Earl Grey Tea, 5 Potstickers and a Lemongrass Chicken Sandwich.... WOW I guess I need to expand my choices when in the Castro on where to eat. I am glad I came across this place and I am not gonna lie, food was out within 10min, but also, I went in on a Wed at 11.30am. Lunch rush picked up while I was here, but it will be interesting to see how busy they become on weekends. I am giving them a 5star on the first visit which is usually not me, but I will definitely check them out again soon.
Wonderful and Cozy Nook Neighborhood Cafe with some of the best Home Style Fried Rice, Viet-French Toast & The Best Almonds Cookies in all of SF!!
I’ve been coming here for years and always look forward to their delicious Banh Mi sandwiches. The French bread is the perfect texture and the fillings are always yummy. Super friendly service too. I always feel welcomed here.
1. Everyone who works here is so welcoming and friendly. When I asked about Vietnamese coffee and food, she explained very well. 2. Food and coffee is amazing. Vietnamese coffee and rice and pork dish was so tasty. Also they the fish sauce is home made. When she serve the food, she was thoughtful to advice me to try fish sauce a little to see if I like it. I guarantee you’ll have an Amazing experience. :):)
This place is the best. The friendliest people work here and the BBQ pork banh mi has me coming back again and again
10/10 spot. Very accommodating staff. A local hub with a great community atmosphere. Also the best prices for a filling meal in Castro. Tons of vegetarian options. So fabulous!
This place has my favorite Vietnamese food in the city, and the service is amazing. It is such a gem! The outdoor seating is super nice too. I love the pork banh mi and the chicken bún, as well as the pho and the spring rolls.
I tried the ginger chicken noodle pho soup and also a chicken ban mi . Absolutely no regrets. My tongue is still a little burn as I couldn't wait for the soup to get colder but if I was living in SF, I would definitely go there once every week or 2 weeks. Staff is nice and fast.
More than just a coffee and pastry. They serve variety of breakfast including some Asian breakfast dishes. 😋 really enjoyed the food and ambiance
I LOVE this place. The people who work here are so funny and so nice and so fast. And again SOOOOO nice. Tofu bahn mi is great too, get with no mayo if you want vegan!

Very friendly and hardworking people making tasty food and drinks. Great customer service! They really care that you enjoy your time here.
The people that run this restaurant are so kind and friendly. I had the tofu banh mi that came out piping hot, the bread was extremely fresh, and flavors all worked very well together. Love this place!
Get a banh mi with pate. The bread is SOOOO soft and it bites off cleanly. The filling of pate was very thick and very tasty. The only critique I have is they don't load up the banh MI with spicy stuff. I'm used to jalapenos and red eye chili, so that might be my preference.
This place is so sweet! The folks that work here seem like they must be a family and they put so much heart and care into their beverages. We ordered a hot chocolate for my son but asked that it be warm, not hot. They made sure it was the perfect temperature and he declared it, “amazing”.

Great breakfast menu with fast and friendly service. The pancake combo shown in the picture comes with orange juice and coffee, which I ordered. The owners were so friendly and nice. Husband ordered an omelette with bacon, mushrooms and hot peppers which was delicious. Came with a hash brown and toast which was plenty of food. Would come back again.
Nice low key little café with lots of outdoor seating. Good place for a quick bite or to sit and people watch on vibrant Castro street. Tons of menu items, including baked goods, sandwiches, drinks, and more. Great service, good prices.

Great place for quick breakfast bite. Their fresh and yummy croissants with egg and cheese is great. They have outdoor seatings too so you can soak up in sun while having delicious breakfast
Pork chop rice is mediocre at best. I didn't try the pastries but maybe they are more specialized on baked goods rather than Viet food
Friendly service, but mediocre noodle soup. Near flavorless broth. Stick to the cafe/bakery classics.

I recently tried this place, and unfortunately, it didn’t meet my expectations. • Beef Pho: The broth was bland and lacked depth, making the dish almost flavorless. • Bhani: It was just okay—not something I’d order again. • Strawberry Smoothie: Disappointing. It tasted like milk and ice blended together, with no hint of real strawberries. • Veggie Egg Rolls: Seemed like frozen Costco ones, with no seasoning or flavor. Overall, it felt like the dishes lacked attention to quality and authenticity. Not worth the visit.
I was charged a 5 dollar credit card fee. In the beginning I didn't notice since u just tap and pay. When I ran my order back it didn't make sense. I kindly ask one of the lady's if the price of the display board was correct and they told me it was. When I ask her what the extra charge was for she gave me the excuse that it was a credit card fee. Maybe I missed it but I never saw a note or a display mentioned that their was a fee. I understand each business is different but it usually 1 or 2 dollars when you buy below. My total was over 20 so I don't understand why they would have a fee. I did get cash back and I appreciate it but the fact that I had to explain it back to them to understand was ridiculous. My first and last time here.

Really liked this place until I went in to pickup and got completely overcharged, even with the prices listed above my head. The iced coffees are not only mostly ice but also not a full cup at all. Incredibly disappointing and something that’ll make me not go back.
