I grew up in San Francisco and live in NYC. I wanted to show my wife some California cuisine while we were in town and I came across Octavia. We did the tasting menu and it was marvelous. Fresh, local ingredients with stunning flavor combinations. We enjoyed every dish thoroughly
This is my favorite restaurant in SF. The dishes are unique, interesting, and full of flavor. And the experienced staff elevate your time here. They're always amazing at curating the right wine to go with your meal and describing the different flavor profiles of each dish. The desserts are also so creative and are my favorite part!
bsolutely fantastic place! Every single dish we tried was exceptional and full of flavor. Chris was incredible — a true professional, incredibly warm and sweet, and he made us feel instantly increadible We loved the amazing pasta course, and the crunchy black cod, — everything was simply delicious! The wine list is outstanding as well. We can’t wait to come back!
I visited on New Year’s Eve and they were running a set menu with plenty of courses! Delicious food and great service. Although it was a rainy night, we sat outdoors in the covered area and it was still perfect. Very warm with overhead heaters, completely sheltered, and the candles made everything cosier. No wind or breeze as it’s fully sealed + curtains by the entrance. Thank you, Octavia! Happy New Year!
Was looking for a special tasting menu experience that wasn't too fish forward or avante gard - just good food - and we got it. The risotto and desserts were highlights. Definitely a treat if you do the full tasting and wine pairing, but worth it.
We went for dinner to celebrate our anniversary and had an amazing time! We started with a fresh salad, followed by a delicious pasta with pork and a perfectly cooked fish as our main courses. What really stood out to us was the sourdough bread super elastic, warm, and with that perfect tangy flavor, absolutely incredible. To make the night even more special, they surprised us with a dessert on the house for our anniversary. The service was excellent from start to finish. We’ll definitely be coming back!
I never write reviews, but I had to come back for to say this. Best meal I’ve had in a LONG time. 10/10. Everything was amazing. The service, the wine. We had two appetizers, each a glass, each a main and shared a dessert. About $130 a person. Shocked how how well the cost was with that. I got my meal to go and it still tasted just bad good the next day. We got the bread with the butter, the blue cheese salad, I got the wagyu and him the cod, chardonnay wine, and the galette to share.
Amazing! We had an absolutely wonderful time here last night! We had the chefs table out back and I can’t complain about a single thing! We have paid more in San Fran for believe average food and this place hit the mark every time! The service was great, the food was amazing and we had such a wonderful time! I would definitely come back here and would happily pay more!
Octavia in San Francisco is a resounding 5-star dining destination that embodies culinary excellence in every aspect. The moment you step inside, the inviting ambiance and charming decor create an atmosphere that promises an unforgettable experience. The attention to detail in the design and layout contributes to the overall warmth of the setting. The food at Octavia is an absolute triumph, reflecting a fusion of creativity and precision. The menu showcases a range of dishes that highlight seasonal ingredients, resulting in plates that burst with flavors and textures. Each dish is thoughtfully composed and expertly executed, leaving a lasting impression on the palate. The service staff is exceptional, delivering attentive and knowledgeable hospitality that enhances the overall dining journey. Their passion for the menu and willingness to cater to individual preferences add to the overall positive experience. Octavia's wine and beverage selection complements the menu impeccably, offering a variety of options to enhance the flavors of each dish. In summary, Octavia is a culinary gem that shines on all fronts. The ambiance, exceptional cuisine, attentive service, and carefully curated beverages make it a must-visit for anyone seeking a memorable dining adventure in San Francisco.
Exquisite cuisine served with passionate and capable staff. The menu feels like it is customised daily (I forgot to ask) and the waiters were able to elaborate and articulate the flavours. Flavours were delicate and could tease the taste buds to make you go “ah”. I’ll definitely be back if I’m ever in SF again.
New menu printed daily. This place might be easily missed as it locates in a quite neighborhood. But everything was exceptional! A great location for date night in downtown San Francisco. Great wine pairing with entrees. We started out with the house made sourdough, then the tagliatelle, and cannelloni. And also shared the lamb. All were exceptional! Definitely would come back.
We ordered the prefix menu $98 The server forgot our bread :( We were seated outdoor so feel like the server forgot our bread because of that. We would consider order the a la carte menu next time. The tasting menu is very creative but the service is not as good as what we’re expecting. Maybe because we were seated at the patio, the servers forgot our bread. The appetizers overall are tasty and fresh. We like the mushroom pasta. The fish and duck are also really nice. Desserts are good with high quality. The interior of the restaurant looks great but they only have a restroom so there’s always a line.
Overall, we enjoyed our visit to Octavia, but with a few important caveats. The service was excellent, and the food was generally very good. We ordered the pork and cod entrées; both were tasty, although the pork and the persimmon salad were noticeably oversalted. Additionally, the persimmon salad surprisingly had very few persimmons. Our biggest gripe was with the small plates. At $18 each for a tiny and rather mediocre apple-potato salad and a simple hummus flatbread, it felt like the restaurant was padding its profit margins a bit excessively. Another concern is the 7% service fee that contributes to employee healthcare. I'm completely supportive of restaurants providing healthcare benefits, but the way it’s currently structured is unclear and confusing. Because it's automatically included in the total bill (rather than itemized separately as a healthcare surcharge), tipping 20% on top of that effectively means you’re tipping on the service fee too, bringing your total tip and fee closer to nearly 30%. To avoid double-tipping, we ended up subtracting this 7% from our tip amount. In total, our bill came to just over $300 for two people (2 mains, 3 small plates, 1 dessert, 4 drinks). While the meal was enjoyable overall, these details slightly diminished the value of the experience.
Staff and ambiance is fine. The food is mid at best. Wife ordered the black cod with crispy rice- a Vietnamese dish. It was fish with a sprinkle of crispy rice kernels. Not worth the price. I had the agnolotti. It was fine, and you only get that. Nothing with it. Oysters are priced individual. $6 for one oyster with a house made hot sauce. Save your money and go to Hog Island. Sourdough bread: $9 for 4 slices and butter. Food wasn’t bad- but it was absolutely not worth the price. Do not recommend. Make your sourdough at home. Again, no problems with staff or ambiance- they were great. But for $200 you can do SO much better.
Read the reviews and had pretty high expectations that unfortunately did not live up to the hype. There were three of us and we had the tasting menu with two wine pairings. The bill was 500+ tip. Given that the food was average at best I was extremely disappointed. Nothing stood out except for the deep fried asparagus as a starter. Everything else except for the desserts was mediocre at best. The wines, however were exceptional. What really stood out was how they just brought plates and left them in the middle of the table without side plates. The fact that they couldn’t be bothered to make small plates for each person and bring them separately blew my mind. A couple of the courses were rushed and for dessert they even forgot the wines for the pairing. Looking at the pics now I’m wondering how the food could be so average when it looks so good in the photos. This of course excludes the asparagus, the wines and the desert which was five star.
Mediocre experience overall. Portions were tiny. The cod came with some greens—kale, I think—which absolutely didn’t go with the dish and made it feel uninspiring. The dessert was just a small sponge cake with a scoop of ice cream on top, nothing special and very underwhelming. The grilled calamari was disappointing as well. I expected a hot dish, but it came out cold, chopped into tiny pieces and mixed with cucumbers—not at all what I thought I was ordering. Service wasn’t great either. The server didn’t offer any recommendations, and they brought the check without asking, even before we finished our dessert. Very rude.
Disappointed by the mediocre food and condescending attitude of the serving staff. The food was presented very well but was hit or miss, the fried string beans were VERY fibrous and the fish was not fresh enough but thankfully it’s fully cooked. Cocktails were also weird. Service staff wasn’t friendly at all and acted like he’s hurried to get his job done and couldn’t care less. Not really a place you’d want to come back or even give a try.
